Jaffna spreading message of peace to world: Modi Narendra Modi seeks equitable development, respect for all citizens in Sri Lanka Agency : Jaffna Making a historic visit to a region once ravaged by strife, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called for equitable development and respect for all citizens in Sri Lanka, seen as an oblique reference to Tamils who had suffered during the war between the LTTE and forces. Winding up his public engagements on his two-day trip to the island with a hugelysymbolic visit to Tamildominated Jaffna, the first by an Indian Prime Minister, he said he was glad that it "is one to wipe tears from the eyes of those who

a unified Sri Lanka. He had also urged the Sri Lankan government to ensure early and full implementation of the 13th Amendment relating to devolution of powers to Tamils and to go beyond that in finding a political solution. Laying the foundation today for a Cultural Centre being built here by India, Modi said, "Sri Lanka should also suffered". The Prime Minister, who is also the second international leader to visit the region after Premier David Cameron in 2013, handed over 27,000 new homes to Tamils who became homeless during the civil war. The houses were

built with Indian assistance as part of India's efforts to help in the reconciliation process. Modi's visit came a day after he had met President Maithripala Sirisena in Colombo and favoured a life of equality, justice, peace and dignity in

Rahul 'snooping' row: Congress alleges political espionage, Delhi Police say it was a routine job Agency : New Delhi As Congress leaders on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Centre alleging that the Delhi Police's "unwarranted" inquiries about party vice-president Rahul Gandhi amounted to "political espionage", the Capital's police chief said there was "no malafide intent". The party demanded a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Rajnath Singh on why a team from the Delhi Police visited the Congress party office to seek details of Gandhi's physical appearance. Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi told reporters that an assistant sub-inspector of the Delhi

Police, identified by him as Shamsher Singh, was "found snooping" and making "unnecessary and weird" inquiries. Singhvi added the policeman had inquired about the colour of Rahul's hairs, eyes, age, height, the shoes he uses and his father's name and the places he visits. The policeman was stopped and accosted by the staff of Special Protection Group, who guard Rahul, at the residence of the Congress vice-president, Singhvi said. Singhvi slammed the government saying it is a case of "political espionage and snooping" on rivals. "We condemn the government and deprecate this kind of conduct," said Singhvi. In a veiled reference to the

snooping of a young woman in Gujarat during Modi's tenure as the chief minister, Singhvi, without naming Modi, said "espionage and surveillance" of political rivals may be a "Gujarat model, not India's model". "The track record shows this kind of espionage was perfected in Gujarat for political opponents," he said. Senior Congress leader PC Chacko too termed it as a "breach of privacy and highly unacceptable."

progress. Unity, peace and amity are essential ingredients for equitable development where there is respect for all citizens." Northern Province chief minister and Tamil leader CV Wigneswaran, who was present at the event, made a strong pitch for replacing the 13th Amendment with a more dynamic system of

devolution of powers. "13th amendment (to Sri Lankan Constitution) cannot be a final solution," he said, noting that Modi himself is a proponent of devolution of powers and cooperative federalism. Earlier, Modi flagged off a train service in the north-western town of Talaimannar -- the closest point to India -- restored after

decades of civil war, completing the reconstruction of the entire Northern Province Railway Line. At Ilavalai in Jaffna, where India is assisting in a housing project, Modi participated in a housewarming ceremony and lent a helping hand in the traditional milk boiling before a family moved into a new home.

Arvind Kejriwal's Ailments 'Classic Case' of Faulty Lifestyle, Says Doctor Agency : BENGALURU Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's ailments are a "classic case" of faulty and stressful lifestyle but he has been "detoxified" to a large extent now, a senior doctor said saturday. "On first day of his medical check-up we observed that this time along with his uncontrolled sugar, he has brought a nagging chronic cough too, which was rather alarming," said Babina Nandakumar, Chief Medical Officer at Jindal Nature Cure Institute on city outskirts, where Mr Kejriwal

is admitted. She said while traditional naturopathic treatments comprising hydrotherapy, massages, packs and mud therapy have been initiated with great effect in combination with yoga and diet therapy, "We had to address his chronic cough rather differently." "Our observation has found it to be a classic case of faulty and stressful lifestyle that included high consumption of aerated drinks, irregular eating habits, high level of pollution leading to the accumulation of toxins in his

body, which required immediate attention, by a competent naturopathy regimen," she said in a statement. Giving the details of treatment, Ms Nandakumar said, "A whole

lot of detoxifying treatments were introduced from naturopathy, yoga therapy, diet and their immediate effects were clearly evident. He will be discharged on March 16.

World Cup 2015: You don't learn a lot out of easy wins, says MS Dhoni Agency : AUCKLAND India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was happy that his team was stretched by Zimbabwe in its last group league encounter of the ICC World Cup 2015, saying the side "wouldn't have got anything" out of easy victories. The defending champions rode on Suresh Raina's rollicking century and an equally unbeaten 85 by Dhoni to overcome Zimbabwe by six wickets and maintain their clean slate going into the quarterfinals of the ongoing mega event on Saturday. Chasing 288, India were at one stage struggling at 92 for four, before the Dhoni-Raina duo held centre-stage. "I think it couldn't have been better in the sense if you're playing the last game of your -- of the league stage, and if you get an easy win, you don't get a lot out of that game. What was good was the spinners were put under pressure, and also we lost quick wickets initially, and that actually put our middle and lower middle-order under pressure, so we

gained a lot out of it," Dhoni said at the post-match media conference. Raina's century laid the foundation and Dhoni lauded the lefthander for his stupendous effort. "Winning, of course, was very important, but the knock by Raina was very crucial coming at No 5. More often than not, you don't get an opportunity. You get in to bat maybe after the 38th or 39th over if your top order is batting well and you have to slog it out, so you play the big shot and get out by not scoring

too many runs. "At the end of the day, when you get into the knockout stages you want to have runs under your belt. It doesn't really matter how many but once

you get going, it just gives you that good feeling, which I feel is important in the knockout stages." The India skipper called it a good game.

The Aam Aadmi Party’s troubles are organizational and not ideological Barely a month after its stunning victory in the Delhi assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is experiencing a crisis. The rift among its top leaders and their bickering is now on public display. There are no ideological issues at stake; the fight is plainly for the control of the party. Two leaders, Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan, were removed from the party’s political affairs committee (PAC) recently. Before their removal and after it, the personal battles between the top leadership— Arvind Kejriwal and his supporters on one side, and Yadav, Bhushan and their supporters on the other side— have been waged publicly through tweets, blogs, selective leaks of letters and documents. On Wednesday, Yadav and Bhushan released a letter raising various issues, ranging from autonomy of decision-making in state units and seeking support of the Congress to form a government in Delhi and most importantly to the danger of a single leader calling the shots in the party. These twists and turns are not unusual. Globally, political parties that seek to radically change social and political conditions often find themselves in the kind of situation being seen in AAP. The experience of the Syrian Ba’ath Party in the 1960s, the Khalq and Parcham factions of the Afghan communist party and closer home, the splits in the Congress in 1907 and 1969 are examples. What is being seen in AAP is, however, different in an important respect. AAP’s fundamental problem, which observers have alluded to since its creation, is its inability to move from a traditional movement to a formal political party. What a group of close-knit activists do while pursuing a narrow goal is very different from what a more encompassing party that caters to the interests of a wider group of constituents has to do. As long as leaders of AAP were chasing a limited goal, for example the Lokpal law, they could work well. But once AAP turned into a full-fledged political outfit, it needed to put in place impersonal rules and organizational methods. The latter are essential in any large organization, be it a company or a political party. From this perspective, AAP’s trouble is not ideological but organizational. What Yadav and Bhushan have alluded to in their letter points to the absence of this development in AAP. The core of the party is still a close group associated with its convenor and his band of trusted followers. This may work well in a civil society agitation but it cannot be the model for a democratic political party. There are, of course, political parties that are led by a single leader or a singly family—most regional parties fit in that mould—but then they don’t have the ambitions that AAP has. Any new party undergoes these organizational teething troubles. There are, however, other aspects in which AAP is catching up with regular political outfits. The allegations that it tried to encourage a group of Congress legislators to back it by forming a breakaway group is a setback to its claims of ideological purity. One leader of the party described it as realignment and not encouragement of defection. This is disingenuous. Most parties do that and without any qualms.

SPORTS ROUNDUP ICC WORLD CUP-2015

India makes a perfect 'six' with Dhoni's six Agency : Hamilton Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton claimed a recordbreaking pole position for the Formula One seasonopening race at the Australia Grand Prix with a dominant performance in Saturday's qualifying. Mercedes' performance underscored the significant edge the team retains heading into the new season after an all-conquering 2014. Hamilton's time was

1.4 seconds faster than third-place Felipe Massa of Williams — a giant margin in F1 terms. "It doesn't feel like it's been a long time since the last race," said Hamilton, who became the first driver to win four poles in Australia. "Today we found a good balance. I am massively grateful for all the hard work that has gone in." Rosberg said he was not too concerned by the wide margin he finished behind his teammate and chief championship rival. "Lewis was in impressive form today, did an awesome job and nailed it every time," he said.

Agency : New Delhi Facebook is buying TheFind, a search engine for Web shopping, as the world's largest social network seeks to make more money from people shopping online. The website's features will eventually be integrated into Facebook's advertising service, a person with knowledge of the matter said. TheFind's technology will help make Facebook's ads more oriented around

reached in 99 deliveries. It was his eighth ODI century and highest by any Zimbabwean and also the first against India in this edition of the mega event. He got a standing ovation from the Indian supporters as the likes of Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan congratulated the 29-year-old, who is migrating permanently to England after this match due to financial constraints. This was also one of the matches

where Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin (1/75 in 10 overs) and Ravindra Jadeja (0/71 in 10 overs) bore the brunt of the mayhem created by Taylor. The pace trio held their own once again, as young Mohit Sharma (3/48 in 10 overs), Mohammed Shami (3/48 in 9 overs) and Umesh Yadav (3/43 in 9.5 overs) did well as the final five wickets went for 47 runs after Zimbabwe were 241 for five at one stage.

Kevin Pietersen may skip IPL; aims to push for England recall Agency : London Former England star Kevin Pietersen could push his bid for an international recall by missing the Indian Premier League in favour of playing English county cricket. The 34-year-old, who won 104 test and 136 one-day caps, has not played international cricket for 14 months after being sacked following England's 5-0 Ashes whitewash in Australia in 2014. Though Pietersen has signed for IPL side

Hyderabad, but incoming England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chairman Colin Graves suggested this month that he could be 'recalled to the England set-up' if he 'scores a lot of runs' for a county. England's dismal showing at the World Cup, where they were knocked out in the group stage, with two wins from six games, has led to calls for Pietersen's return. Pietersen does not have long to make his mind up, as the IPL starts on April

8, with the County Championships subsequently getting underway on April 12. "That's what I'm looking at," Pietersen told Fox Sports Australia when asked if he would play county cricket.

World Cup 2015: West Indies to face UAE in a must-win game in Napier

Facebook acquires TheFind, said to ramp up product advertising products, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the information isn't public. While Facebook has sought to find ways to profit from people finding things to buy as they browse their social networks, it hasn't always succeeded. For example, the company discontinued a service that sent birthday gifts. Now, Facebook is focusing its efforts on ecommerce-related ads and putting direct links to products that are later purchased.

Agency : Auckland Indian captain M.S. Dhoni finished the match in grand style with a big six and along with Raina (110 not out), made a perfect six wins for the team against Zimbabwe in a Pool B encounter in Auckland on Saturday. Dhoni and Raina came together when India were in a precarious situation 92 for 4. Dhoni was unbeaten on 85. Kohli and Rahane chipped in with 38 and 19 respectively. Brendan Taylor played the innings of his life in his final ODI for Zimbabwe as his 138 helped the team manage 287 all out in 48.5 overs against defending champions India in the final pool B league encounter of the cricket World Cup, in Auckland on Saturday. The total was highest by any country against India in the current edition surpassing Ireland's 259 in the previous game. Taking the Indian bowlers by the sword after being put into bat, Taylor smashed the white ball around the small Eden Park ground, cracking 15 boundaries and five sixes in his 110-ball stay. Having scored his first 50 off 64 deliveries, Taylor scored his next 88 runs in only 46 balls as the three-figure mark was

Agency : Hobart The rain gave Australia's fans some nervous moments. A washout would mean they would be bumped down from second to third in the group. However, the rain relented just in time and Australia coasted to a seven-wicket victory over Scotland in the 40th match of the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup in Hobart on Saturday. Chasing 130, Michael Clarke went out to open the innings in order to get some time out in the

middle ahead of the quarterfinals. His opening partner, Aaron Finch, survived a chance on 1 when Preston Mommsen spilled a catch at second slip off Rob Taylor. Finch went after Iain Wardlaw by smashing him for two fours and a six in the third over but in the pursuit of quick runs, he mistimed the lofted drive to cover on 20 and Freddie Coleman dived forward to take a good catch. Following Finch's dismissal, Clarke went after Wardlaw by

hitting him for a four and a six. Shane Watson (24) joined him and he also took the attack to the Scotland bowlers before a rush of blood resulted in his dismissal. He looked to lapsweep a full and slow ball from Josh Davey but he ended up getting a top edge that nestled in Matthew Cross' gloves. Clarke (47) followed soon when he pulled Wardlaw to deep square leg where Michael Leask took a good, diving catch close to the boundary.

Agency : Napier It's math camp. On Sunday (March 15), the final day of the 2015 World Cup group stages, different permutations and combinations will come into play to decide which two of West Indies, Pakistan and Ireland progress to the knockouts. In the middle of it all are United Arab Emirates, with no hope of progressing, but hopes high of having a decisive say in the way things pan out when they take on West Indies at McLean Park in Napier. For Pakistan and Ireland, the equation is simple: the

winners qualify. For West Indies, it's a tad trickier. With four points from five games, they are two points behind both Pakistan and Ireland, and have an inferior net run-rate to Pakistan. The least they need is a win over UAE. But if their win against UAE isn't by a big enough margin, and if Ireland beat Pakistan in the day's second match, Pakistan could go

through. To keep their side of the bargain, West Indies are expected to unleash Chris Gayle's fury on UAE despite the big Jamaican, reportedly, not being fully fit. UAE have so far conceded totals in excess of 300 to Pakistan and South Africa, the likes of Ahmed Shehzad and AB de Villiers doing the damage on those occasions.

As per an estimate Umarsar mine has 28 mt lignite and 22 mt is suitable to be achieved through mining. 3 mt stock will not be mined due to lack of forest department permission on Guneri side. Thus net achievable stock will be 19 million. 35 transporters are registered so far for transportation job. Truck transport is third major option of employment in Kutch after agriculture and animal husbandry. In recent years, due to closure of Panandhro mine (aimed at keeping reserved stock of minerals) transport industry of Kutch had suffered major

setback. Transporters hope, Umarsar mine will work as replacement of Panandhro. Speaking at the opening function, all political leaders in one voice asked transporters to stay away from overloading of trucks because it causes damage to roads. The government has assigned mining job to private firm BGR Mining and Infra Private Limited for five years. In first five years, the company will excavate over burden soil worth 65 mt. Umarsar mine’s life is 22 years. It is 2186.76 ha in size. Public hearing for environment clearance was held for this project on 13 March 2009. Later various environment related clearances were pending, and therefore mining was delayed.

In such a scenario, knowing the cyber security is as important as implementing it. This was the central theme of the first day of 'Inconcyse International Conference on Cyber Security' hosted by Gujarat Forensic Sciences University (GFSU) in Gandhinagar on Friday. Cyber security experts talked about issues such as third party vulnerabilities, impact of

cyber threats on telecommunication, banking, transport and defence sectors and good global practices. In his keynote address, Howard Schmidt, former cyber security adviser to US presidents George W Bush and Barack Obama, stressed upon the requirement for collaboration of government and private sector and raising the cadre of security experts for Gen Next cyber crimes. Later in discussion with other experts, Schmidt said that it is not important where the

software is made as long as we know how it is made while answering the apprehensions about sourcing various components of software from various countries that make the programme vulnerable. The participants said that today right from universities to hospitals and power grids to military intelligence work on mega information networks and safety of cyberspace is connected closely with the nation's economic and social growth.

Shift Jaitapur nuclear project to Gujarat, says Uddhav Agency : Mumbai Reiterating his opposition to the proposed Jaitapur nuclear power project, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray today said Gujarat Chief Minister Anandi Patel should take away the project to her state as she had invited industries from Maharashtra. “The Gujarat Chief Minister has in the past invited industrialists to shift base to her state. Now she should take away the Jaitapur nuclear project too. The

electricity generated from the project will be transmitted to the central grid, from where different states will buy that electricity. Maharashtra, too, will have to buy it. Why should Maharashtra be put into 100 per cent danger for a few percentage increase of electricity?” Thackeray told reporters here. He also said that if the Mumbai MetroIII project harms the Marathi-speaking people in any way, it will be “uprooted and thrown away.”

Rajya Sabha MP elected from Gujarat and senior Congress leader, Ahmed Patel today in a letter to Gujarat Chief Minister urged the state government to give relief to potato farmers in Gujarat. “I have learnt that potato farmers in parts of Gujarat are facing acute losses due to inadequate storage facilities, which has been further aggravated due to the unseasonal rainfall. Potato prices in Deesa are down by 60% compared to last year. And due to the surplus harvest, I fear that prices will plunge way below cultivation price,” Ahmed Patel said in his letter. Ahmed Patel stressed on need of sufficient storage facility to store

Former IPS officer Rahul Sharma, whose application for early retirement was approved by the Gujarat government last month, is now planning to join the Bar. On Saturday, Sharma will apply for enrollment in the Bar Council of Gujarat (BCG) for practicing law as an advocate. Sources close to Sharma said that after June 2015, the former IPS officer may also work as a lawyer with a city-based NGO. "Sharma did his LLB from Gujarat University while he was still in the IPS. As a police officer, he had always fought for the downtrodden and the marginalized sections of society. He will be able to continue his fight for justice in working with the NGO," said the source. Sharma, a 1992-batch IPS officer, had written a letter to the state home department in November 2014 seeking early retirement from government service. In February 2015, the state government approved his application for premature retirement and, on 28 February 2015, Sharma retired from government service. Earlier, while posted as Bhavnagar SP during the

communal riots of 2002, Sharma had saved from a riotous mob about 400 children living in a madrassa. Following this, he was transferred to Ahmedabad city police control room. "It was while he was posted in the police control room that he was asked to assist the city crime branch in its investigation of the massacres that had taken place in the city. While

agriculture produce when prices are down. He said, “Sensing oversupply, the storage owners have already raised rent by 25 paise/kg. With no storage space, mounds of potatoes can be seen rotting in open fields. In 2011 thousands of kilos of potatoes were dumped on the streets due to poor storage facilities. A majority of the storage facilities in the state are single commodity storages; hence in the long run the government could reconsider its policies and encourage greater investment in multi-purpose storages with state of the art technology.” Ahmed Patel further said that the unseasonal rains early this month have only added to farmers’ woes.

The girl had lodged the complaint in Madhya Pradesh which was later transferred to Ahmedabad.

Female painter sees violence against women through Draupadi's eyes Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

What could have been the mental state of Draupadi when she was reduced to the status of an object lost by her husband and disrobed in public? As every woman can still identify with her conflicts and sufferings, a city-based painter has revisited Mahabharata to capture Draupadi's tragic fate, underlying how mankind is doomed for humiliating a woman. The exhibition by Ruby Jagrut at Amdavad ni Gufa resonates the hushed-deep voices, the inherent strength, the subtle hues and characteristic virtues of some of the most prominent female characters of Mahabharata such as

Ganga, Amba, Kunti, Gandhari, Hidimba, Draupadi, Madhavi, Savitri, Uttara and Shakuntala. Jagrut is one of the rare contemporary artists globally to employ the ancient technique of natural dyes as a medium that is on the verge of extinction. Jagrut says, "With so much violence happening against women, women around the country need to see the power that comes with being a woman. I wanted to highlight Mahabharata and Draupadi's humiliation as warning, one that empowers women and frightens men." " For me these female characters became my 'muses', each

presiding over a different strength, a different virtue, and each represented by their intrinsic strength of personality, their dilemmas and their choices. I have tried my best to depict a specific moment of the character's life in a way that the nuances of her persona can be viewed clearly. The paintings also endeavour to translate aesthetic meanings so as to mirror my interpretation as an artist and unveil the vitality of the art and theme to the viewer," says Jagrut. All the paintings showcased at the exhibition express the unappreciated virtues of some women characters of the epic Mahabharata.
