Opposition parties are maintaining a cautious silence on the question of legalisation of same-sex marriage, with the matter before the Supreme Court. The apex court on Monday referred the issue to a five-judge Constitutional Bench, after the Centre opposed same-sex marriage and urged it to leave the decision to Parliament.

Barring individual voices, leaders in most parties, speaking off the record, said they would rather the Supreme Court set the ball rolling by pronouncing its verdict either in favour or against same-sex marriage, like it had done in the case of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. With the government dragging its feet, the Supreme Court had in 2018 scrapped the Section

Jharkhand Govt Sets Up Inquiry Commission to Probe Allegations Against Former Principal Secy to CM

Former Jharkhand

Sikhs are victims of India, and anybody who dissents from this conclusion is a traitor to a higher cause. This is the manifesto of the separatist shicer Amritpal Singh boiled down to its essence. Singh, much like his model Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, is a barely literate dropout. The admixture of Sikh supremacy and victimhood he purveys is ornamented with phrases usurped from other personalities and causes. He speaks of self-determination, portrays Sikhs as slaves of the Hindus, and demands proof from Muslims of their fidelity to Punjab. Our tribune of the plebs is embarrassed by his own curriculum vitae—he worked as a driver in Dubai—so a fictitious backstory has been hastily contrived to portray him as a selfless sant who sacrificed a big business career in the United Arab Emirates to lead the oppressed Sikhs of Punjab to the ethnoreligious land of the pure. Most Sikhs are appalled by him. But he expands his constituency by inciting feelings of inferiority and then assuaging them with assurances of inherent Sikh superiority. His coreligionists are not descended from Punjab’s Hindu peasantry — they are a distinct and superior race, ennobled by their faith, and can only preserve their eminence by erecting walls around themselves to keep out non-Sikh contaminants.Asked if he recognises the Indian Constitution, Singh retorts by asking if the Constitution recognises him. Contrary to Singh’s claim, Article 25 of the Constitution does not subsume Sikhism into Hinduism — it, in fact, recognises Sikhism as a distinct religion while preserving the State’s authority to effect laws facilitating the provision of social welfare by keeping liturgical institutions open to people of all backgrounds and classes. Far from stamping on the Sikh faith, it makes special allowances for the expression of Sikhism: Not only does it treat the dagger as an article of their faith – it even subordinates the expectation of safety of non-Sikhs to Sikhs’ right to carry the kirpan into secular spaces.

Director Ashima Chibber recently said the presence of single parents, working mothers and children on the sets of Rani Mukherji-starrer

Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway, which celebrates the mother-child bond, made the shoot a special experience. “There have been pregnant women, working mothers and single parents among the crew members. It felt like there was a lot of mother energy on the sets. It definitely is not an easy task to accommodate so many mothers along with their children. The production team should take all the credit for taking such a challenging task and see through it to the end,” she explained.

Since both Ashima and Rani are mothers, their children were present on the sets as well because

of long shoot hours. Based on true events, Rani Mukerji-starrer Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway chronicles the life of a mother who fights against all odds to win back the custody of her children in a faraway land. The movie, which marks Rani’s return to the big screen after more than a year, also features Anirban Bhattacharya in a key role.Produced by Zee Studios and Emmay Entertainment, Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway is slated to arrive in theatres on March 17.Rani was last seen alongside Saif Ali Khan in Bunty Aur Babli 2, which failed to draw audiences to theatres. US regulators closed New Yorkbased Signature Bank on Sunday, making it the third-largest failure in US banking history. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) has formed a bridge bank to handle the accounts of Signature Bank customers. To some extent, Signature is a victim of the panic around Silicon Valley Bank, which regulators seized on March 10. Its closing underscores the challenges that face small and midsize banks, which often focus on niche lines of business and have a narrower base of customers than Goliaths such as JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America. That leaves them especially vulnerable to old-fashioned bank runs. The US Treasury Department and other bank authorities declared

in a joint statement that “no losses will be borne by the taxpayer” and that all of the depositors of Signature Bank and Silicon Valley Bank will get full compensation.

Signature Bank started operations back in 2001 and grew to become one of the few banks to hold funds from cryptocurrency investors and startups. After the Silicon Valley Bank shut down, Signature Bank’s business customers started enquiring if their deposits were safe as they had more than $250,000 in their accounts while the FDIC only assures funds up to $250,000.

Yami Gautam: ‘I’ve tried to do

very different roles to prove my versatility as an actor’

After A Thursday, Yami Gautam is picking up kudos for playing a fearless and sensitive crime reporter in Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury’s film Lost, streaming on ZEE5. Yami chatted with us about her favourite scenes from Lost, bonding with Pankaj Kapur and her upcoming Netflix release Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga. All the scenes with my character Vidhi and Nanu (Pankaj Kapur) are close to my heart. If I have to pick one, it will be the first scene in the film where the two of them are sitting at the dining table. They are having an intense conversation, which changes to a light one very organically. Vidhi talks about how the news story has become very important to her. They eventually start talking about the lost boy and Vidhi tells him Ishaan and Ankita’s love story. The entire credit for this scene goes to Pankajji and Tonyda (Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury). My next favourite scene is where Vidhi and her boyfriend Neel (Neil Bhoopalam) are having a conversation at the latter’s house. Neel asks her why this news story is such a big deal for her. I think this scene has the crux of the story. This is something that the audience would ask – ‘What’s the big deal? It is not a murder mystery. It is very simple.’ Neel is reflecting the audience somewhere. That is when Vidhi says, ‘Ishaan is a human being. Don’t try and add an angle to it. The way Ishaan went missing is wrong.’ This scene is very crucial in the film. The scene between Nanu (Pankaj Kapur) and Varman (Rahul Khanna) is my favourite. In this scene, Nanu visits Varman for the first and only time. Nanu says, ‘I’m not here to order you, I’m here to warn you. You stay away from my granddaughter because if you cause her any harm, mere hatho ka swad to tum jante ho.’ I think the intensity with which Pankajji has performed the scene without raising his voice and just using his whole body language is amazing. That is the mark of a true actor. That is why he’s a legend. When I watched that scene, I felt that you don’t need power and strength to prove that you’re strong. Whatever is in your mind, it will come to your eyes and body language automatically.
