CRPF jawan assault video: J&K police arrests five persons “We strongly condemn this act. We have initiated investigation into this matter and as far as I know few people have already been arrested,” Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh said Agency | New Delhi

The Jammu & Kashmir Police on Friday arrested five persons in connection with heckling of CRPF personnel on polling day in Budgam on April 9, video of which has gone viral inviting sharp reactions from various quarters. After receiving a complaint from the CRPF, five persons were arrested, and a hunt was on for others seen in the video shot in Budgam district, police said. Jammu and Kashmir Police chief S P Vaid lauded the restraint shown by the CRPF jawans and said, “Any armed force in the world would have retaliated with force. We have registered an FIR in police station Chadoora against the ruffians who heckled the CRPF personnel. They will be dealt with as per law,” Vaid said. The DGP said an FIR has also been lodged after a video surfaced in which an

ue property purchase and 6,600 cases of outward remittances shall be subjected to detailed investigations (under Operation Clean Money II). “All the cases where no response is received shall also be subjected to detailed enquiries,” the CBDT said. The CBDT added in the statement, that the ‘Operation Clean Money’ is being conducted by the tax department through use of advanced data analytics allowing “optimisation of government resources and causing minimum inconvenience to the taxpayers”. It also said the impact of the decision is already visible as the government has seen an increase of 21.7 per cent in the returns of income received in Financial Year 2016-17. Besides, sixteen per cent growth in gross collection was seen, the highest in the last five years.

ITBP personnel was seen shooting right in the head of a stone-pelting protester outside a polling station in same area. “A case has been registered in connection with that incident also. It is a matter of investigation and action will be taken against whoever is found guilty,” the DGP added. In the video, Kashmiri youths are seen abusing, heckling and assaulting CRPF jawans while they were returning carrying EVM machines after their elections duty. The jawans, however, were seen using immense restraint even when they were attacked by the angry mob. “We strongly condemn this act. We have initiated investigation into this matter and as far as I know few people have already been arrested,” Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh said. The latest development came after the CRPF registered a FIR against the culprits. The CRPF had earlier said the video was authentic and the incident happened in Kralpora area in the Chadoora assembly segment in central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

“All those involved in the act will be punished. An FIR has been lodged and some youths have been arrested,” Singh had said on Wednesday. He also lauded the army and other security forces for maintaining discipline desite being atatcked by the mob. “The jawan had gun in his hands and he could have done anything when he was being insulted. But he kept calm and maintained high discipline,” the Deputy CM said. “It is a condemnable act. The state government

will take stern action and all such elements will be punished,” he said. Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Mehbooba Mufti today said the “failure” of the previous Omar Abdullah government to deal with the issue of stone-pelting had led to the unrest last year and the situation in the Valley at present. Her remarks came as a response to National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah, who had yesterday said the Mufti government was “financing stone-pelting”. “There was no measures taken with regard to the youths, who took to the streets to hurl stones (in 2010). What steps were taken at that time to check stone-pelting? No treatment was done. It is because of the failure to take steps to treat the ailment. It churned lava (in youths), which exploded suddenly last year and till now, we have not been able to stop this,” Mehbooba said.

2 Garlands For Amit Shah In Odisha Make BJP Intent Clear: Let’s Win This Agency | Bhubaneswar

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi lands in Bhubaneswar tomorrow, his drive to the venue of his party’s meeting will be a grand, public affair. The BJP is reluctant to describe the event as a roadshow, but confirms that the PM will move in an open-top SUV, greeting workers and supporters who will line the streets. A similar welcome was given to BJP chief Amit Shah, who arrived today in the Odisha capital for the two-day session of the BJP’s national executive, which consists of about 350 people and decides strategy for the year, including for state elections. The location has been carefully chosen to send a series of political messages. The BJP has never governed Odisha, except in alliance when Navin Patnaik of the Biju Janata Dal, who is serving his fourth consecutive term as Chief Minister. He ended the partnership in 2009. Movie stars are role models, they should not be promoting fairness creams Young people deserve positive role models, yet too many modern-day celebrities offer bad examples. In the wake of BJP leader Tarun Vijay’s comments about dark-skinned people in southern India and the assertion that Indians are not racist , cross-over actor Abhay Deol has taken on Bollywood stars who endorse fairness creams to bolster their brand earnings. Those who endorse these brands include some of the biggest stars on the Hindi movie marquee such as Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif, Shahid Kapoor and John Abraham. Millions of fans look up to stars such as Khan, who’ve stayed on top of their game for decades as role models. His career trajectory from being the perpetual outsider to the Badshah of Bollywood is seen as a success story. Khan has a sizeable following in the Indian diaspora. Given this, it would be appropriate for him to turn down assignments that convey the wrong message, that whitening one’s skin is something to be sought after. If he had not agreed to endorse fairness creams, Khan may have had to forgo a sizeable amount of money, but he would have earned the respect of millions of admirers. He would have also joined the select club of younger, conscientious actors such as Kangana Ranaut, Ranbir Kapoor, Randeep Hooda and Swara Bhaskar who’ve reportedly turned down offers to endorse fairness creams. Then there are actors like Nandita Das who champion campaigns against discrimination on the basis of colour. Das wrote on her blog: “I am shocked to see the rise in the number of dark actresses looking paler and paler with every film and magazines, hoardings, films and advertisements showing only fair women.” Bollywood stars have a disproportionate influence on the young in India. Many aspire to emulate their success stories and blindly follow their actions. So, to suggest that fair skin is somehow more desirable is to the detriment of those who are dark and encouragement to them to change their skin tone by using the product peddled by the star. Our obsession with fairness can no longer be blamed on a colonial hangover. We are inherently racist and we should accept this if we have to change. From students from Africa to south Indians, many Indians are positively insulting and unaccepting. In the past we have seen even politicians encouraging discrimination based on colour as was the case with the Ugandan students in Delhi who were targeted by a former AAP minister. Our matrimonial advertisements are a giveaway. From fair to wheatish, a dark skinned partner is never sought. The parents of dark children are objects of pity as this is seen as a negative in the marriage market. Our bias is not skin-deep, it goes far beyond that. Our stars should be changing mindsets, instead many of them are reinforcing them. For as long as there have been humans on this Earth there have been the people who we look up to as our heroes and celebrities.

favour for an award: Akshay Kumar

Earlier this week, reports made the rounds that the highly anticipated Tamil remake of Vikas Bahl-directed Queen, starring Tamannaah Bhatia, has been shelved. While promoting Baahubali 2, Tamannaah had said that the remake of the Kangana Ranaut starrer has been shelved, much to the surprise of the film’s producer Thiagarajan who feels otherwise. She went on to add that the project has been dropped indefinitely and she decided to move on to her other commitments. When learnt about Tamannaah’s statement, the shocked producer shed some light on the reports. Although he confirmed that Tamannaah is no longer part of the film, the plan to remake the film has not been dropped. “We had originally approached her but we felt her remuneration was very high. We even discussed with her father and since she was not ready to negotiate, we decided to move on. The project has not been dropped. We are currently on the lookout for a suitable replacement who can do justice to the film in four southern languages,” Thiagarajan said. Meanwhile, it is also believed that the makers are on the lookout for a new director. Actress-filmmaker Revathy was originally supposed to helm the remake while Suhasini Mani Ratnam was supposed to pen the dialogues.

Agency | Mumbai Ever since Akshay Kumar won the prestigious Best Actor National Award for his role in and as ‘Rustom’, people have been whispering how the superstar lobbied his good friend Priyadarshan, who headed the jury this year, into giving him the award. Akshay, however, vehemently denied these accusations. While talking about his National Award win with a popular tabloid, the actor clarified, “I have completed 25 years in the film industry and I’ve never called in a favour to bag a movie or an award. As for Priyadarshan favoring me, I think he has answered that question in your newspaper. Priyadarshan, in an interview with the same tabloid, had said, “Akshay Kumar deserved the award and we gave it to him. There were a total of 38 jury members with me on this. I consider it the blessings of my parents and the good wishes of my family. Mrs. Funnybones (wife Twinkle Khanna) who always teased me on not getting any awards is happy and my happiness lies in making her happy,” he was quoted as saying. Karisma Kapoor’s ex-husband Sanjay Kapur is now married to Priya Sachdev Agency | New Delhi Away from the limelight and paparazzi’s attention, actor Karisma Kapoor’s former husband, businessman Sanjay Kapur, tied the knot with his longtime partner, model Priya Sachdev. The wedding, which was an intimate affair, reportedly took place in Delhi on Thursday. Though there are not many details about the wedding, a picture of the newly-married couple has made its way online, thanks to Priya’s sister Charu. She shared the photo on her Instagram page. It shows Sanjay and Priya posing with with her parents. While Sanjay is wearing a white kurta pyjama, the new bride is seen in an orange salwar kameez, looking stunning. The couple will apparently throw a reception party

in New York, where they first met. They dated for five years before solemnising their relationship. All these years when Sanjay’s ugly divorce with Karisma was going through, he and Priya were spotted making appearances together at many public events. It is Sanjay’s third marriage, while Priya’s second. Sanjay married Karisma in 2003, and their divorce came through last year. They have two kids – Samiera and Kiaan. Before Karisma, Sanjay was

married to designer Nandita Mahtani for two years before they parted ways in 2003. Priya, on the other hand, is the former wife of Indo-American hotelier Vikram Chatwal. They have a daughter, Safira. As for Karisma, she has also reportedly found love in Mumbai-based businessman Sandeep Toshniwal. His presence at Karisma’s father Randhir’s 70th birthday bash seemingly confirmed that the two were in a steady relationship.

Agency | New Delhi Sonakshi Sinha starrer Noor is all set to be released on April 21. The second trailer of this Sunhil Sippy movie is a shade more darker than the first one. We saw Noor aka Sonakshi turn from what she considered a boring, anti social journalist who was stuck reporting news that didn’t matter to a party girl, to a social butterfly who flirted openly. During this transition, she changes from a journalist running behind the story of her life to someone selfish – at least as far as we could tell from the trailer. Now, the second trailer tells us a tad bit more. It tells us about Noor’s courage in pursuing the story, it shows us her annoyance with ‘fluff’ pieces which is more than just that and it sets the tone of something much darker at force. All of this after she received a verbal shot from her boss. That’s why it starts with the book turned film’s popular line ‘Mumbai (Karachi), You are killing me.’ The question of how the city has changed from what it was to what it is today, the way Noor draws comparisons between herself and the city that she is living in is expected to be the turning point in the film. The trailer is the frustration that Noor feels because of not finding work ‘worthy’ enough to report on, and the frustration of not finding sources with enough guts to go on record. The trailer has less fun quotient – friend Kanan Gill.

Specialty chemicals company LANXESS continues to target growth. During the next three years, its business unit Advanced Industrial Intermediates will be investing some EUR 100 million in expanding production facilities for chemical intermediates. Around EUR 40 million each will be invested in the Leverkusen and Krefeld-Uerdingen sites in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The rest will be used to expand the facilities in Brunsbüttel (federal state of Schleswig-Holstein), and Antwerp (Belgium). The expansion project is scheduled for completion by 2020. “Organic growth is a key success factor as new LANXESS heads forward. www.sunvillasamachar.com IPL 2017: Conditions were in favour of pacers, says Umesh Yadav after KKR’s win over KXIP

Umesh Yadav, playing his first game in Indian Premier League 10, picked up 4 wickets against Kings XI Punjab Agency | New Delhi

After thrashing Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in their first home game of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bowler Umesh Yadav credited the wicket at Eden Gardens. He also thanked India’s current batting coach, Sanjay Bangar, for advising him to control his run up in order to bowl in controlled lines. After a long home season for the national side, Umesh missed the first two games for KKR but turned up the heat in his first appearance in IPL 10. Finishing with figures of 4-0-33-4, he spearheaded the attack to lead his side to an 8-wicket win. KKR are the table toppers, after the victory over KXIP, and Glenn Maxwell’s

side have slipped to the third spot in the points table. On the track offered at Eden Gardens, Umesh stated, “The wicket is helping the fast bowlers. The conditions were also in favour of the pacers. We don’t get such wickets in Test cricket, but I am very happy with the turf here. Not everywhere we can get such wickets in India, depending on the soil in different regions.

They have tried to make a lively pitch which offers good balance between bat and ball so that the match turns out to be nice.” KKR opened the innings with Sunil Narine taking guard along side Gautam Gambhir. This move surprised one and all, but later paid rich dividends as the West Indian scored a quickfire 37. Talking on Narine’s promotion in the batting order, Umesh told, “I don’t know much about it since I don’t sit down with captain and coach. But with the way Chris Lynn was batting, we needed someone to carry the momentum from him and Narine did just that. He has opened the batting in Pakistan’s T20 league (Pakistan Super League), and hence the management went with him.”

After Real Madrid defeat, frustrated Bayern Munich to discuss size, quality of squad Agency | Munich

German football champions Bayern Munich face a serious discussion about the quality of their squad after their 1-2 defeat against Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday. In the clash with the reigning champions, it was obvious that Bayern could not afford to replace key players like Robert Lewandowski who was sidelined with a shoulder injury. And the failure to have strengthened the squad could now turn out to be a mistake as Bayern may well be eliminated after the second leg in the Spanish capital, said. A few weeks ago, Lewandowski praised the German side for not adding more top quality play-

ers. The Pole assumed that 18 to 19 players would be ideal as they all were close being included in the starting eleven and would not have to fear being left out. Last summer and in the winter break, Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti expressed satisfaction with the size of the squad and decided together with club leaders Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeness to rely on the current squad. But against Real`s world class side, Lewandowski`s re-

placement Thomas Mueller was unable to match the Pole`s performances. Mueller was ineffective despite the team using its usual 4-2-3-1 system. He was unable to keep the ball long enough for his teammates to move forward. Disappointment could not be greater as the wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben were below their best and substitutes Douglas Costa and Kingsley Coman are still a long way off becoming top class.

SPORTS ROUNDUP Delhi to host India’s FIFA U-17 World Cup matches: Reports FIFA will announce the match schedule on July 7 in Mumbai Agency | New Delhi

In a major change in the U-17 FIFA World Cup scheduling, India’s matches in the tournament will be played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi instead of the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has changed the schedule but FIFA and the local organising committee are yet to be informed, says a report in The Tribune. “Initially, we had decided to play the matches at the D Y Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai but later changed our plan as the sports ministry too favoured Delhi as the

venue,” stated the AIFF general secretary Kushal Das, to The Telegraph. FIFA will announce the match schedule on July 7 in Mumbai. According to the schedule, India’s league matches are to be played on October 6, 9 and 12 in Navi Mumbai. The only Group A match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will take place on October 12. But, after the changes in schedule, Delhi will now host the Group A matches while Navi Mumbai will be allotted the Group B fixtures. There were reports earlier that the capital is

likely to miss out on the opportunity of hosting the marquee matches of the prestigious FIFA Under-17 World Cup later this year following the football federation’s concerns over the “extremely high” pollution levels in the city after Diwali. With the tournament scheduled to be held from October 6-28, the all-important knock-out games will be held after Diwali, which falls on October 19 this year. So these matches are expected to be held at the other five venues — Navi Mumbai, Margao, Kochi, Guwahati and Kolkata.

IPL 2017: Ravindra Jadeja gives Gujarat Lions Chlorine gas leak in Gujarat village; 19 hospitalised of officials from the commuch-needed boost with return ahead of RPS clash Correspondent | Vadodara pany which supplies gas Correspondent | Rajkot

Struggling Gujarat Lions is set to receive a much-needed boost with the imminent return of ace all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja during their clash against Rising Pune Supergiant in the Indian Premier League on Friday. Gujarat Lions, who finished an impressive third in their maiden IPL appearance last year, did not have the best of starts in the ongoing edition of the tournament. The Suresh Raina-led side suffered consecutive defeats against twotime champions Kolkata Knight Riders and title holder Sunrisers Hyderabad in their opening two matches. And come on Friday, Gujarat Lions would be desperate to turn their fortunes around in front of home fans at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot. Gujarat Lions got a much-needed boost in the form of Jadeja, who is likely to play his first IPL match. Jadeja missed Gujarat Lions first two games after he was ad-

vised rest for two weeks by the BCCI medical team soon after the India’s four-match Test series against Australia. Jadeja has had a terrific home season with both ball and bat for India and his return will definitely boost Gujarat Lions’ morale. Another key member, West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, who is recovering from injury, however, is doubtful even though he took part in the team’s practice session yesterday. Gujarat Lions’ strong point is the team’s batting department. With the likes of Brendon McCullum, Aaron Finch, Jason Roy, Raina and Dinesh Karthik up its rank, Gujarat Lions heavily depends on its batting

unit. But the likes of McCullum and Finch have failed to live upto their reputations so far, garnering just 40 and 18 runs respectively in the first two games. Opener Jason Roy started the innings well on both occasion against KKR and SRH but failed to convert the good starts into big knocks. Only skipper Raina, who struck unbeaten 68 against KKR at home and Karthik (47,30) have shouldered the responsibility in the middle-order. West Indian Dwayne Smith can be destructive with the bat on his day. But Gujarat Lions main problem lies in its bowling unit which lacks teeth and experience. In the first two games, Gujarat Lions

Daman Youth Action Force (DYAF) vice president Uday Patel said that they have also planned a rally against the suggestion. He expressed his displeasure over the arrest of the group’s chief, Umesh Patel, for his refusal to call off the bandh. “Now the issue is of whether to take

out rally though we are firm on the bandh. We will discuss with other members of our NGO before a decision. Our NGO works for the social issues, faced by youths in Daman and we are not associated with any political party,” said Uday Patel. Umesh Patel has been sent in judicial custody until April 17. bowlers have managed to picked up only one wicket with veteran Praveen Kumar scalping the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan. Dhawal Kulkarni, who was Lions most successful bowler last year, Praveen, Basil Thampi, leg-spinner Tejas Baroka and left arm chinaman Shivil Kaushik all looked ordinary in the first two games. And Jadeja and experienced Munaf Patel’s inclusion in the playing eleven will definitely add strength to Gujarat Lions bowling attack.

Since The Indian Express first reported the issue in December last year, there has been a bitter exchange of letters between the VCs of AAU, Kamdhenu University and Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, copied to two ministers and the principal secretary of agriculture department.
