You covet other's land, use terror as state policy: India snubs Pak at UN H.S. Agency| United Nations Strongly hitting back at Pakistan for raising in the UN the issue of the killing of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani, India has said Pakistan "extols" the "virtues" of terrorists and uses terrorism as a state policy towards the "misguided end" of coveting the territory of others.India's ambassador to the UN Syed Akbaruddin responded strongly to the remarks made by Pakistan's envoy Maleeha Lodhi on Kashmir and Wani's killing during a debate on human rights in the 193-member UN General Assembly here on Wednesday. In her statement, Lodhi, apart from raising the Kashmir issue,

also mentioned the "extrajudicial" killing of Wani, whom she described as a "Kashmiri leader", by Indian forces. In his statement, which sources here termed as perhaps the hardesthitting against Pakistan in recent times, Akbaruddin said Pakistan "extols" the virtues of terrorists and could not gain membership of the UN's human rights body because of its "track record". Lashing out at Lodhi's raising of the Kashmir issue at the multi-lateral world body, Akbaruddin said it is regrettable that Pakistan attempted to "misuse" the UN platform."Regrettably, earlier today we have seen an attempt at misuse of this

UN platform. The attempt came from Pakistan; a country that covets the territory of others; a country that uses terrorism as state policy towards that misguided end; a country that extols the virtues of terrorists and that provides sanctuary to UN-designated terrorists; and a country that masquerades its efforts as support for human rights and self determination," he said.Akbaruddin asserted that Pakistan's "track record" failed to convince the international community that it should gain membership of the Human Rights Council in this very session of the UNGA.

‘Left with no choice,’ Zakir Naik cancels interaction with media again H.S. Agency| Mumbai Controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, facing heat over allegation of inspiring some of the Dhaka attackers through his speeches, has cancelled his press briefing again, citing pressure from authorities of the venue where he was slated to interact with the media via Skype. He was slated to interact with media via Skype on Thursday, for which arrangements had been made at a small hall in South Mumbai.”The management of the Mehfil hall in Agripada, around 11 PM last night, told our team present at the venue that they cannot allow the press conference to take place and that we should dismantle and pack up all the venue arrangements we had made. Given no choice,

our teams dismantled everything and left by around midnight,” an aide of Naik said in a statement. Naik’s media interaction was first scheduled earlier this week at Trident Hotel in South Mumbai, but the venue was subsequently changed to World Trade Centre. Later, the venue was again changed and a hall in the congested Agripada area of South Mumbai was chosen for the press briefing, which has also been cancelled now. The organisers of Naik’s press briefing had on Wednesday claimed that Mumbai Police has instructed top hotels in the city to refrain from providing space to hold a conference, a charge which they later retracted. Facing heat over allegation of inspiring some of the Dhaka

attackers through his speeches and under scanner of the state and the central agencies, Naik was expected to clarify his position during the media interaction. There were media reports that “provocative” speeches had inspired some of the terrorists who carried out Bangladesh’s worst terror attack at a cafe in Dhaka that left 22 dead.A top Home department official in Maharashtra had earlier said that a report on Naik would be submitted to the state government, before the commencement of Monsoon session of the state Legislature, which starts on July 18.”Contrary to media reports, Zakir Naik has not been given any clean chit by the Mumbai Police.

Congress likely to name Sheila Dikshit as its CM candidate for UP today

help Congress regain support of the electorally sizeable community. An announcement naming 78-year-old Dikshit as Congress' chief ministerial face is likely to be made soon, party sources said.Dikshit is the daughterin-law of prominent Congress leader from UP Uma Shankar Dikshit, who was a Brahmin face and had served as a Union minister and governor for a long time.Earlier this month, Dikshit, a three-time Delhi Chief Minister, had said as UP's "daughter-in-law" she was ready to play any role in the state. Dikshit had met party President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi last month during which she was said to have been sounded by them for a leading role in UP.The Brahmin community, a traditional vote bank of Congress, had shifted allegiance to BJP in the aftermath of the Mandir-Mandal politics and a section in Congress feels it should make efforts to win back the support of the community.

No demotion for Smriti Irani The unholy hammering of Smriti Irani from the moment she was assigned the ministry of human resource development in 2014, and her shift to the ministry of textiles in 2016 has created a very ugly mix of misogynist nuances, tones of elitist intellectual superiority and antagonism towards anything that moves away from the clutch of Left circles.Even if there may be fears about unscientific theories being propagated or texts being changed, it is difficult for the Left and Congress elements in society to fully accept that they have been democratically displaced, and the new regime has a full mandate to present new ideas, people and policies. Apart from other things, Smriti Irani also suffered for her perceived closeness to the prime minister. Not only has the PM proved that no one can claim that, but has also shown he is capable of assessing performance and doing the needful. However, media ugliness showed up beyond the bounds of reason when the ministry of textiles was highlighted as a “demotion” in the latest ministerial reshuffle. The media painted textiles as the boondocks of political opportunity, a punishment for an errant minister. Santosh Gangwar, who was minister of state for petroleum and chemicals, science and technology, and parliamentary affairs — all fairly “meaty” assignments — in the earlier NDA government was never shown as having being “downsized” when he was appointed the textiles minister by Narendra Modi. The ministry of textiles was, unfortunately, demoted by her attackers to undermine Irani. Apart from the unwarranted virulence towards any woman in public life who is not morally or financially corrupt, it was downright unfair to undermine the immense scope for good work that lies before her on the textiles landscape. It should be a very creative challenge for a woman who has displayed dynamism and pro-activeness, not always to people’s liking.Skill India, Make in India, Start-up, Stand-up India, Mudra loans and many other job creation programmes point to the massive need for providing employment opportunities for skilled and semi-skilled workers. These have to spread across many professions and disciplines. The ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship is focusing mainly on skills that are required in major industrial and infrastructure projects. This ministry has also identified gaps in skill areas that need to be filled across many sectors, including handicrafts, handlooms and the textile industry in general. If the silo system is broken down completely the domain knowledge of ministries can be shared seamlessly and training programmes can match skill needs. This does not happen easily because ministries work at their own pace. From the beginning, the ministry handling textiles recognised the primary need for “employment” as the very foundation of its policies. It was suddenly changed in 1985, during Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure as the PM, when polyester became the new buzz word and corporate pressure ensured that the “production of cheaper cloth for the masses” became the priority, with “employment” taking second place in the textiles policy.

My character over controlling in ‘Great Grand Masti’: Urvashi

H.S. Agency| New Delhi Actress Urvashi Rautela says her character in her upcoming adult comedy “Great Grand Masti” is overcontrolling and overpowering.Urvashi, who plays the role of a ghost in the film, said her character has an essence of beauty and innocence.“My character in the film is overcontrolling and dominating. It was a difficult role to play as I was working with a group of talented actors and they are just amazing.“When it comes to acting and characterisation I wanted to look equally good on the screen like my co-stars Ritesh (Deshmukh), Vivek (Oberoi) and Aftab (Shivdasani),” the 22-year-old actress said.Urvashi said the movie is funnier and better than the past films in the franchise.“I did romance, action and comedy altogether in this film so i had a great fun while shooting it.

Sultan’s journey is similar to Salman Khan’s real life, says director Ali Abbas Zafar

H.S. Agency| New Delhi When the story of this year’s box office behemoth, Sultan, was still a 10-page draft, the film’s producer Aditya Chopra asked its writer-director Ali Abbas Zafar for the name he intended to cast in the eponymous role. Zafar’s answer was: Salman Khan. That’s because the journey of Sultan, as visualised by the director, was akin to that of Khan’s in real life.“Salman’s professional and personal lives have been dotted with many ups and downs,” says Zafar. Post the actor’s nod, he went about creating the character that he felt “should be equal to

Khan’s star power or larger than that” so that even after watching the movie the character lingers in the mind of the audience. With Sultan, creating a record with its opening weekend earning of Rs 345 crore (including the overseas market), the character of this flawed wrestling champion seems to have found a wide acceptance. For Zafar, Sultan is not all about wrestling but an exploration of what lies within. “Whether you are in a wrestling ring or that of life, you are bound to falter sometimes because of the circumstances. Yet, you have to get up and move forward.

French President Francois Hollande’s haircut costs 10 thousand euros H.S. Agency| Paris Short on the sides and thinning on top, French President Francois Hollande’s hair is kept perfectly groomed at a cost of almost 10,000 euros a month, the Canard Enchaine weekly reported on Wednesday. The unpopular leader’s hair has never been the topic of scrutiny, unlike other highprofile male politicians such as US presidential candidate Donald Trump or former London mayor Boris Johnson. However the publication of the contract of his hairdresser, identified only as Olivier B., by the investigative

newspaper had the French bristling over such extravagant spending by a Socialist president.A lawmaker with the farright National Front (FN) referred to Hollande as “his majesty” on Twitter, while other users superimposed afros, mullets and other hairstyles on pictures of the president, to “help his hairdresser earn his salary”. The hashtag #Coiffeurgate was trending on Twitter in France. An image of Hollande with a beanie photoshopped onto his head was captioned “budget cuts”. Beijing threatens to turn South China Sea into ‘cradle of war’ H.S. Agency| Beijing China warned rivals on Wednesday against turning the South China Sea into a “cradle of war” and threatened an air defence zone there, after its claims to the strategically vital waters were declared invalid. China reacted furiously to Tuesday’s decision, insisting it had historical rights over the sea while launching a volley of thinly veiled warnings at the United States and other critical nations. “Do not turn the South China Sea into a cradle of war,” vice foreign minister Liu Zhenmin told reporters in Beijing, as he described the ruling as waste paper. Liu also said China had “the right” to establish an air defence identification zone over the sea, which would give the Chinese military authority over foreign aircraft. Meanwhile, top American lawmakers have said the US must ensure that the international tribunal ruling against China’s claims to rights in the South China Sea is implemented and if needed reinforce its military assets to maintain the “status quo” in the strategic region.

Earlier, controversial film ‘Udta Punjab’ also leaked online, which was produced by the same banner, Balaji Motion Pictures. Is it a conspiracy against the production house?“The makers will be the right people to answer that. We artists come in only during the shooting, but then release, strategizing, publicity, depends on the makers.

Anirban Lahiri hopes for a good run H.S. Agency| New Delhi

Star golfer Anirban Lahiri is hoping his love for links golf will lead to a strong showing at the Open that begins at Royal Troon in Scotland on Thursday. The reigning Asian Tour number one, making his fourth appearance in the world’s oldest championship, is eager to improve on a career best tied fifth outing in a major tournament achieved at the PGA Championship last season.“The Open has always been good to me, so I’m hoping for a good run,” said Lahiri, who made a holein-one in his debut at Royal Lytham in 2012 and was tied 30th at St Andrews last year. After a spectacular 2015 season where he won twice in Asia, made his Presidents Cup debut, earned his PGA Tour card and broke into the

world’s top-50, Lahiri’s 2016 campaign has been rather muted with only two top-10s thus far, one in Asia and the other in the United States. He conceded that competing in his rookie PGA Tour season has been challenging as he faces a new golf course almost every week. Hence, a return to a links setup in Scotland has provided him with a fresh confidence booster.“I prefer playing links courses to parkland courses probably because we don’t play enough of it and also because you have to be more creative as it’s less sterile. You have to control your ball flight, up and down and sideways and you have to have a lot more feel,” said Lahiri.“The best thing about links golf is that it’s not about the power game. It’s strategy and precision. Even my best finish in America this year at the Colonial

Bengaluru Bulls go down to Jaipur Pink Panthers

H.S. Agency| Bengaluru In a see-saw contest the Bengaluru Bulls fell to a yet another defeat in a 22-24 loss to the Jaipur Pink Panthers in their Pro Kabaddi League match at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Wednesday.Conceding their fourth straight loss and the second one at home, the Bulls put up a fight as they held on till the end before Panthers walked away with the spoils. Skipper Jasvir Singh topscored for the Panthers along with Rajesh Narwal with the duo garnering five points each.

A super tackle by Amit Hooda in the first half and a joint team effort saw the Panthers romp to six-point lead over the Bulls as the visitors took a 15-9 first half lead after the Bulls had raced to a 5-2 lead to the delight of the crowd. The Panthers moved at 10-8 before jumping to 13-8 as they took out all the hosts players. But this did not kill the spirit of the home team who started the second half on a positive note. They could not push the batsmen to play their deliveries and bowled too wide outside the off stump, something which the pacers will have to sort out in the three-day warm-up game at Warner Park.Ishant Sharma, who also has had a long layoff, and Umesh Yadav will also look to grind it out as the duo is expected to be key

members of Kohli's game plans. It will be interesting to see if Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur gets a chance to roll his arms over in this game. While the seamers were inconsistent, leg-spinner Amit Mishra was impressive and made life difficult for the West Indies Presidents' XI batsmen and was on a hattrick after he dismissed Rajendra Chandrika and Jermaine Blackwood in successive balls.Mishra ended with a four-wicket haul and will look to continue his good run. Spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja will also like to test their skills in the warm-up game, specially since the pitches in the West Indies also assist slow bowlers.

Why isn’t football No 1 at Games? H.S. Agency| Chennai Football is unquestionably the most popular sport in the world. By extension it should be the no. 1 at the Olympics, too. But it isn’t. Why? Football at the Games is primarily a U-23 affair, although each team can have three over-aged players.Fifa doesn’t want a brand to rival its cash cow — the World Cup. The world governing body of the game knows well that Olympic football will upstage the Fifa World Cup in all aspects if it is made an open tournament. That’s why Fifa has zealously been guarding its right to decide who can play at the Olympics. The Olympics’ magnetism is well established. Fifa, which gets most of its revenue from the quadrennial World Cup, cannot afford to create a monster that will come back to haunt it one day. The World Cup is nowhere as prestigious as the Olympics in other team games. The amateur ethos of the Games created a lot of friction between the International Olympic Committee and Fifa throughout the 20th century. With professional leagues well entrenched in many countries, football at the Olympics struggled to stay relevant. The Fifa World Cup, set up in 1930, heightened the tension between the IOC and Fifa. Football, which made its debut

in 1900, was excluded from the 1932 Games at Los Angeles but it has become a constant on the Olympic programme after making a swift comeback in the next edition. From 1952 to 1980, the gold medal at the Olympics became the preserve of Communist countries because the likes of Easter Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and the USSR didn’t allow their best players to join professional leagues outside. In 1984, the IOC opened the gate for professionals with a condition that players from Europe and South America were not eligible if they had played at the World Cup. Fifa mandated that only professionals under the age of 23 could take part at the 1992 Olympics. Four years later, it allowed three over-aged players in each team in a bid to lure prominent players to the Olympic arena.Football at the Olympics hasn’t been shorn of star power. Romario, Careca and Claudio Taffarel were all part of the Brazilian team that finished second in 1988. Lionel Messi’s only gold medal in international football came from the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Neymar was a losing finalist four years later. At Rio, football is sure to be a hit as hosts Brazil have included Neymar in their squad to win the elusive gold.
