SUNVILLA SAMACHAR The French Film Director Was An Icon For Film Lovers In Bengal And Kerala “There is no God in cinema, Godard is God”- that was how a young member of our SouthCalcutta Film Club quipped as we were discussing the French films in 1965 after a screeningof some films in the French consulate including afilm of one of the founders of French NewWave Jean-Luc Godard. Godard passed away on September 13 in his home in Switzerlandat the age of 91 leaving behind a legacy of large number of films beginning with pathbreaking Breathless in 1960 and ending with The Image To Look in 2018..He was adisruptor in the conventional cinema world of 1960. He invented new idiom of film makingand inspired a new generation of thinking film makers in the 1960s and 1970s andlater also.As Amartya Bhattacharya, the young Kolkata based film maker who recently released hisfilm ’Adieu Godard” without knowing that the maverick would die so soon, wrote in his blog“Jean-Luc Godard can’t be expressed in text, nor in any discrete form. He is the onlydefinition of himself. Anyone exposed to his films will know what I mean. He destroyed, hecreated, he triumphed. And he did so in a way that he became an institution and, at thesame time, the face opposing all institutions.”According to Amartya, Godard is not one of those filmmakers who are overobligated to thetraditional. He dared to question and take the status quo head on. He is not just a filmmakerbut a revolutionary. He has shown the world that any power or hegemony can bechallenged, even Hollywood. Through his films and words, he was, is and will remain anepitome of courage, boldness, art and intellectual fire.The young 35 year old film maker wrote “His cinema could rise way above the content, somuch so that many would look at Godard more as a form of cinema than the content hecreated. His cinema is a testimony to a harmonious marriage between form and content,aesthetics and power, objectivity and subjectivity, thesis and antithesis, sensitivity andintellect. He was political, yet not a propagandist. His omnipresence in his films and sheerindulgence took several critics by surprise, but he, being Godard, took cinema to a heightwhere his critics would only make a mere mockery of themselves.”Godard was a craze in Calcutta in 1960s. After 1964, many new film societies were foundedin Calcutta and the districts of Bengal led by the young activists who were interested in bothgood cinema and left politics. Same was the situation in Kerala. We got reports that youngfilm lovers in Kerala were closely monitoring the French cinema and Godard had emergedas the icon to the aspiring film makers who were making efforts to do new type of films. InCalcutta, that was a period of big turmoilfor the politically inclined youths. The economy wassinking after the 1962border war with China. The Communist Party got split. The French embassy officials who attended, were pleasantly surprised at themassive response of the Calcutta audience to the French films of 1960s.In fact, most of the leading film directors of Bengal of that time minutely saw the films andscrutinized both form and content for taking lessons. The opinion varied but there wasgeneral agreement that the new wave film making technique had opened up ways formaking films with less costs and cost effective technology. Satyajit Ray was the mostmeticulous among the film directors who scanned the new wave directors including Godardin all their entirety. Ray was an ardent admirer of Vittirio De Sica and his films. During hisstay in London in 1950, he liked the Italian neorealistfilms most and had dislike for some ofthe French avant guard films of that time. No KYC was followed and there was no CCTV camera installed at the premise and there was no in and out register,” it said. The premise had 761 lockers of which three belonged.

OneScore, India’s leading techbased credit score monitoring platform, which enables one to keep a regular check on their credit health, today said that millennials and Gen Z consumers are now becoming increasingly conscious of their credit and money management habits. The report, christened the “Credit Literacy Index’, showcases the results of a study conducted among more than 9 million users on OneScore’s platform across the country. According to this report, more than 46% of millennial and Gen Z users reported an improved credit score in FY22The report highlighted that consumers are becoming more credit-conscious and taking an active role in managing their credit health. Millennial and Gen Z cohorts especially are actively undertaking self-monitoring of
their credit score. The platform witnessed that over 56.8% of millennials actively monitored their credit score in FY21 vis-àvis 48% in FY21. Whereas, in the case of Gen Z consumers actively monitoring their credit score, the platform witnessed a growth of over 2.5 times, from 7.1% in FY21 to 19.1% in FY22. The platform also stated that it witnessed a 16% jump in the average number of times millennials monitored their credit score annually. Additionally, there was a massive jump of 163% in overall new consumers actively checking their scores in FY22 vis-à-vis the same period last year. The study observed that owing to the rising credit consciousness and regular monitoring of credit scores, the platform witnessed a 26% fall in late/deferred payments among the millennial and Gen Z audiences.
