Vintage MS Dhoni rescues with unbeaten 92, takes India to 247/9

India beat South Africa by 22 runs India beat South Africa by 22 runs in the second ODI in Indore on Wednesday, level series 1-1 Agency | Indore MS Dhoni delivered a timely reminder of his worth as an ODI batsman and Axar Patel led the way for a fresh bowling line-up as India managed to overcome a jittery batting effort by shutting out South Africa to level the series at 1-1 in Indore. With their best bowler in R Ashwin injured and Stuart Binny and Amit Mishra dropped, India opted to bring in Axar, Harbhajan

Singh and Mohit Sharma for the second ODI and each played a role in stifling the South Africans after Dhoni’s unbeaten 92 from 86 balls had set up their 247/9 from the depths of 104/5. Axar had the biggest impact, prizing out three huge wickets to finish with 3/39, his best figures in ODIs. With a 22-run win, India have maintained their 100% record at the Holkar Stadium in their fourth trip. In Ashwin’s ab-

sence, getting optimum out of the spinners was always going to be critical. Axar and Harbhajan delivered early blows to lift India’s mood. A wild dash at Axar did for Hashim Amla (17) while Quinton de Kock (34) danced down to Harbhajan and found long-off. With these blows, South Africa slipped to 52/2. Suddenly, with the ball gripping and turning and two close catchers in for two new batsmen,

Violence in Punjab town after ‘desecration’ of holy book, 15 injured Agency | Faridkot

Members of several Sikh groups protesting against the alleged desecration of their holy book, Guru Granth Sahib, clashed with police in Faridkot district of Punjab on Wednesday, leaving at least 15 people injured. 12 cops, including Bathinda inspector general of police Jitendra Jain, were among those injured. Police used batons and water cannons and fired in the air to disperse members of the Sikh groups who gathered in Kotkapura of Faridkot district early on Wednesday to protest the act of sacrilege in Bargari village. Several policemen

were among the injured. The clash erupted in the main square of Kotkapura when police tried to arrest the leaders of the protestors. The protestors also tried to block highways leading to Moga and Bathinda towns.he situation in Faridkot district is tense but under control, officials said. A strong

police contingent has been deployed in the area to maintain law and order. Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and his deputy Sukhbir Singh Badal appealed to the people to maintain calm. The chief minister said those found guilty would not be spared. Kotkapura has been tense since more

than 100 pages of the Guru Granth Sahib were found scattered in a street leading to a gurdwara in Bargari on Monday. The pages were allegedly torn from a ‘bir’ or copy of the Guru Granth Sahib that was stolen from Burj Jawahar Singh Wala village, located 5 km from Bargari, in June.

the match was buzzing. Harbhajan flighted it, Axar varied his pace excellently while landing the ball in teasing areas. JP Duminy and Faf du Plessis pushed the ball around, sometimes excellently, sometimes fortuitously. The pair defied India for almost 15 overs, adding 82 in the process, until Duminy, on 36, missed a sweep at Axar whose nagging lines produced the fatal shot. An opening had been created. Twelve deliveries later, du Plessis (51) made room to drive at a flighted delivery from Axar and picked out an alert Kohli at catching cover. Enter David Miller, struggling for form, who nibbled at his first delivery faced and was well

taken by a diving Dhoni. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s strike left South Africa at 142/5. The big wicket of AB de Villiers came soon enough, after the South African captain gave a glimpse of his threat with four and six off Bhuvneshwar, when a full blooded slap was intercepted at extra cover by Kohli. Such reflex work in the field was a highlight of India’s fielding, as further embellished by another Kohli beauty to get Dale Steyn first ball of the 37th over bowled by Mohit. This left South Africa to get 62 runs in 13.5 overs with three wickets remaining, but it proved too much. India’s bowlers mounted the pressure and, with some help from Vineet

Kulkarni who incorrectly ruled Farhaan Behardien caught down the leg side off Harbhajan, the chase petered out. Bhuvneshwar snuffed out two wickets in the 43rd over to end with 3/41. As good as that effort in the field was, India’s victory was not possible without Dhoni’s innings earlier in the day. Winning the toss on another good batting surface was a good opportunity for India to push for their first win in four matches against South Africa, but a slew of rash dismissals to pace and spin left the skipper with plenty to do. He delivered, adding 143 to the total while batting with the bowlers after India lost half their side in 24 overs.

what is the principal agenda driving the Bihar election? All eyes are on Bihar. The reform agenda of the Narendra Modi government will depend on the outcome of this closely fought election. Since the success of the JP movement in the 1970s, the political and electoral complexion of Bihar has had national resonance. It is likely that the Bihar poll outcome will have a domino effect in the Hindi heartland, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, where elections are scheduled in 2017. So, what is the principal agenda driving the Bihar election? Some maintain that the political formation led by Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad is raking up caste in the name of Mandal part two. A couple of months earlier, this formation, they say, vitiated the provincial political discourse by insisting that the Union government reveal caste-wise details of the socio-economic census. Prime Minister Modi maintains that Mandal represented the collapse of the state and the lawlessness resulting in “jungle raj”. He argues that Mandal 2 will entail “rojana jungle raj ka darr”. This implies that the development agenda will be replaced by caste-centric lawlessness if the RJD-JD(U)-Congress combine wins. What is unsaid is that Mandal in Bihar was co-scripted by Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar, the poster boys of the Mandal Commission and development respectively. When Nitish crafted the “coalition of extremes” with the BJP for the 2005 assembly election and persisted with it in 2010, it was described as a pro-development platform. The coalition was fractured when Nitish broke with the BJP. Later, when Nitish wanted to build a “coalition of the poor and marginalised”, it was referred to as a configuration of chosen castes. With Lalu as a significant part of the coalition, the maha gathbandhan is seen as an “out-and-out caste coalition”. Since the 2014 general election, the BJP has been active in co-opting different marginal and subaltern castes in UP and Bihar. After Kalyan Singh, a powerful backward caste leader, was marginalised in UP, the BJP declined to the fourth position in the state’s electoral map. That led to the BJP crafting its political strategy of co-opting the backward castes in the Hindi heartland, executed with precision by BJP chief Amit Shah. A historical figure like Mauryan emperor Ashok was identified as hailing from the Kushwaha caste. The BJP government issued a stamp on him and his caste antecedents were highlighted at functions in Patna. Yet, the BJP is absolved of caste-centric mobilisation.

After missing a chance to address a rally in Bihar due to an “overwhelming turnout” because of which his chopper couldn’t land, actor Ajay Devgn feels the organisers were not prepared for such a large meeting and urged better arrangements in future. Ajay, who was supposed to address a meeting in Bihar sharif on support of BJP candidate Sunil Kumar earlier this week, just waved at the crowd from his helicopter which was reportedly not allowed to land on security grounds. “Didn’t expect such an overwhelming turnout at Bihar rallies yesterday (October 13), my request to administration for better arrangements next time,” Ajay tweeted on Wednesday. In fact, things went out of hand when Ajay’s admirers resorted to violence and started hurling chairs and

gest terrorist attacks on American soil since 9/11, has been warmly welcomed in most reviews and also by some of the 33-year-old actress’ colleagues from Bollywood as well as Bollywood. In its review of the first episode of Quantico, the New York Times review said: “The strongest human asset in Quantico is (Priyanka) Chopra, a Bollywood superstar and former Miss World who is

immediately charismatic and commanding amid the otherwise generic ensemble. If there’s a problem with her casting, it’s that she may come across as too seasoned and assured to be persuasive as a shaky, neophyte recruit.” The show also stars Jake McLaughlin, Aunjanue Ellis, Yasmine Al Masri, Johanna Braddy, Tate Ellington, Graham Rogers, Anabelle Acosta and Josh Hopkins in pivotal roles.

Agency | Mumbai Superstar Salman Khan is reuniting with director Sooraj Barjatya after almost 16 years. Their last movie together was ‘Hum Saath Saath hain’ in the year 1999. The duo has always created magic with films like, ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ and ‘Hum Apke Hain Koun!’, and this time again they are all geared up to deliver another superhit with ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’. Starring Sonam Kapoor opposite Salman Khan, the title track of the movie is something that the director is looking forward to as it treats you

with the royal grandeur along with the magic of Rajshri Productions. Sonam Kapoor is seen beautifully decked up in colourful lehengas and dancing to the tunes of the song, while Salman Khan’s character ‘Prem’ has everyone waiting. Talking about how special the title track of ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ is to him, director Sooraj Barjatya said: “This song is very precious to me as it has the title in it – it’s beautifully written by Irshadji and melodiously composed by Himeshji. The annual inflation rate, based on the official wholesale price index (WPI), was ruling at 2.38 percent in September, last year. The data furnished by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, revealed a revised rate of the headline inflation for July. Volkswagen scandal not a question mark over diesel engine tech: Mercedes

Agency | New Delhi German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz today said the emission scandal involving compatriot Volkswagen cannot be a reason to question capabilities and technical advances of diesel engine technology. The company, which reported 34 per cent increase in sales in January-September this year, also said the scandal has not affected sales of its diesel vehicles in India. “This scandal has nothing to do with the performance (of diesel car sales)... I don’t believe that (scandal) is a reason to question capabilities and technical advances of what you can do with diesel,” Mercedes-Benz India MD and CEO Roland Folger told reporters here. Volkswagen had admitted to employing a ‘defeat device’ in over 11 million diesel vehicles sold in the US, Europe and other markets which led to manipulation of emission tests. The company is facing fines of up to USD 18 billion in the US. When asked if sales have been affected by the scandal, he said: “We at Mercedes have not seen any impact on our diesel sales at all.”

will cover all venues in the city, which are hosting garba events,” state VHP media coordinator Jay Shah said. Earlier reports had quoted VHP leaders as saying that if non-Hindus were caught at garba venues during Navratri, they would be purified the “Hindu way” using Ganga jal, gau mutra and tilak. They also said VHP activists would “patrol” outside and inside the venues to “identify and remove non-Hindus”.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday upbraided sacked Gujarat IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt for giving a “tutored” statement to a court-appointed special investigation team probing the 2002 post-Godhra riots and attempting to implicate Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the case. A twojudge bench of Chief Justice HL Dattu and Justice Arun Misra said Bhatt acted in “deliberation and consultation with” the leaders of the opposition political party, NGO activists and mediapersons to furnish false evidence to prove he was present at the February 27, 2002, meeting chaired by Modi, who was then Gujarat chief minister. “Exchange of e-mails which are self-explanatory indicates that the petitioner was in active touch with leaders of rival political party, NGOs; their law-

yers tried to play media card and he was being tutored by NGOs,” the bench said, without naming any political party. The Congress was in opposition in Gujarat then. Questioning Bhatt for making allegations against the state nine years after the alleged incident, the top court chided him for approaching it with “unclean hands”. The bench said evidence placed before the court by the Gujarat government revealed Bhatt was making attempts to know who were present at the meeting, thereby suggesting that the IPS officer didn’t attend it. may become a health risk. Hospital authorities are being kept informed of these,” says a senior AMC health official. As the city continues to grapple with dengue, 10 people — including a one-year-old boy — were admitted to a private hospital with the deadly disease late on Tuesday night. The boy, a resident of Devam Apartments in Motera, had a high-grade fever and cold for the last four days. Senior consultant Dr Manoj

Vithlani said: “Children, especially infants and toddlers, are more vulnerable as they lose body fluids quickly. Any kid with dengue symptoms should be given plenty of water.” He said: “Any child who has a fever should be monitored for at least 3 or 4 days. Parents should not give children any medication without consulting a doctor. Paracetamol, aspirin, brufen-based medicines are strongly advised against.”

court’s scathing remarks against Bhatt came while it dismissed his petition for a court-monitored SIT probe into the two cases lodged against him by Gujarat police — one for allegedly coercing his junior officer KD Panth to submit an affidavit against then chief minister Modi before the court’s probe panel into the Godhra riots and the other for allegedly hacking the account of the state’s then additional advocate general Tushar Mehta, now an additional solicitor general. The court ordered expeditious trial in the two cases.

while the government looked the other way. Stating that the BJP specialised in making announcements of projects but was weak in their implementation, the Congress leader said that the state government had al-

located a sum of Rs 2,200 crore to fill up 87 big and small dams of Saurahstra to improve drinking water supply in the region. But despite spending over Rs 2,260 crore, the water supply situation had remained the same and people were facing severe water crisis. He said that the same was the situation with regard to Sujlam-Suflam water supply scheme in north Gujarat. Despite spending Rs 11,000 crore on the project, the area was facing water shortage.

Over 3000 cars delivered in Gujarat on 1st day of Navratri

After almost no sale in the first half of the month, car dealers delivered a record number of vehicles on first day of Navratri. On the auspicious occasion, people lined up outside car and bike showrooms to take deliveries on the first day of Navaratri on Tuesday across the state. According to rough estimates, more than 3,000 cars and over 7000 two-wheelers were delivered in the state on the first day of Navratri with Ahmedabad accounting for over 30% of the deliveries. “We delivered 250 cars and 500 two-wheelers on the first day of Navaratri across our counters in Gujarat - mostly in Ahmedabad,” said Sukhbir Bagga, director of a dealership group which has showrooms across the state. “We recorded deliveries of 527 cars across the state, of which over 150 cars were delivered

in Ahmedabad followed by about 70 in Vadodara,” said Rupen Chhaya, general manager of another car dealership group. However, auto dealers claimed that there was minimal rise in sales compared to last year. After a slowdown in last three years, the dealers registered 20% growth in the sales of cars and two-wheelers in 2014. With the beginning of festive season sales are expected to increase by 5%-10%. “We expect good deliveries during all the nine days of Navratri and better numbers on Dusshera, at least 150 units more than those delivered on Tuesday,” said an auto dealer. Small cars and scooters accounted for most of the deliveries on Tuesday. “As for cars, hatchbacks dominated the deliveries. Among two-wheelers, scooters and 150cc bikes constituted the maximum deliveries,” said a citybased dealer.

Ahmedabad’s public hospitals are just short of earning the dubious distinction of being the harbinger of dengue haemorrhagic fever. The death of a 25-year-old doctor at VS Hospital has left state and municipal health authorities questioning hygiene levels at public hospitals. On Tuesday, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) health authorities carried out fogging and vector-control measures within the VS Hospital premises, and also asked Sola Civil Hospital and Asarwa Civil Hospital to review their vector control measures. “In certain parts of Asarwa civil hospital, there are problems of mosquito infestation.
