The central government on Wednesday sanctioned seven new battalions to strengthen the IndoTibetan Border Police (ITBP) force guarding the India-China LAC. The seven battalions have 9,400 new posts. The decision, which was long pending, was taken in a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Following this decision, the strength of ITBP in terms of numbers will increase on the India-China border. The Cabinet also decided to turn the ghost villages on the Indian side along the India-China border into ‘Vibrant Villages’. Even more impressively, the resources are estimated to contain around 5.9 million tonnes, which if confirmed would give India some of the world’s largest proven deposits of Lithium after Australia, Bolivia, Chile and China. And you do not really need all that much Lithium in a battery. If you remember the periodic table from your high-school chemistry, you would know that Lithium is the lightest metal. Thus, an average ‘AA’ Lithium-Ion cell uses just a couple of grams of the element. On cars, a nominal Lithium-Nickel Manganese Cobalt (LiNMC) battery uses just 70 grams of Lithium per kilowatt-hour. The increasingly more common Lithium FerroPhosphate (LFP) cells used nowadays use slightly more Lithium, but are cheaper to produce. So any which way you look at it, the huge amount of Lithium found in Jammu would power the entire Indian automotive industry as well as fulfill the needs of the consumer electronics industry for a century. And that does not preclude the possibility of even more Lithium being found elsewhere in India. This will do much to assuage the fear that following India’s constant dependence on importing crude oil from petro-states to keep the arteries of the economy running, the country would become dependent on new ‘electro-states’ such as China, which dominates Lithium refining and battery making. But to be clear, China will continue to dominate battery making for electric vehicles. By building up a massive industry, ring-fencing the resources needed to make batteries including Lithium, Chinese companies own the largest Lithium mines in the world situated in Australia.

It’s a very interesting adventure. There’s lots of laughter, crying and suspense. Anupamji said that this is a film about happy people in unhappy situations. Recalling his contribution to Indian cinema, veteran producer Anand Pandit says,”The Indian film industry owes its inception to Dadasaheb Phalke as he was the pioneer who invented the cinematic language that we now use to tell our stories. He showed filmmakers how to bring their dreams to life on celluloid by making India’s first full-length feature film, ‘Raja Harishchandra’ in 1913 and laid the foundation of the industry that we are so proud of today.” Pandit recalls the challenging journey of a small-town photographer who dreamed to be a film-maker and says, “It could not have been easy but Dadasaheb had an insatiable desire to expand his horizons. He started a printing press, went to London to study cinema, was a

tireless learner and went on to make India’s first silent film. He has 95 movies and 27 short films to his credit in a short span of 19 years at a time when we had limited technological resources! His mythological movies like ‘Mohini Bhasmasur’, ‘Satyavan Savitri’, ‘Lanka Dahan’, ‘Shri Krishna Janma’, and ‘Kaliya Mardan’ were technically sound and sheer marvels of storytelling.
