Later it turned out to be a hoax as the bag was claimed by a woman hailing from Hoshiarpur district of Punjab. “Around 12 PM, an abandoned bag was spotted by a passenger in the DMU: 74901 Jalandhar-Pathankot train. Two wires were coming out from a packet inside the bag which made the passengers suspicious and they informed the railway authorities. Senior police officials from Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh and Pathankot in Punjab reached the spot,” Ferozpur Divisional Rail Manager Anuj Prakash said.

Petrol price slashed by Rs 0.74, diesel by Rs 1.30 a litre

Petrol, diesel prices slashed Agency | Mumbai

Petrol price was on Friday cut by Rs 0.74 per litre and diesel by Rs 1.30, reversing the 2-month trend of rising rates. Petrol in Delhi will cost Rs 61.13 per litre from midnight tonight as against Rs 61.87 currently, said Indian Oil Corp (IOC), the nation’s largest fuel retailer. Similarly, a litre of diesel will cost Rs 48.01 compared to Rs 49.31 at present. The reduction comes on back of two straight increases in petrol prices - Rs 3.07 a litre on March 17 and Rs 2.19 per litre on April 4, and four straight hikes in diesel prices. Diesel price was last hiked on April 4 by Rs 0.98 a litre and three previous increases totaled

Bangalore is likely to host the IPL final after the fixture had to be moved from Mumbai following the Bombay High Court’s ruling to shift all IPL matches after April 30 out of Maharashtra because of severe drought. Kolkata is in line to stage the Eliminator and the second Qualifier, both originally scheduled in Pune. The proposed changes were

arrived at after IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla met officials from the Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiants in Delhi and need to be ratified by the league’s governing council. Shukla said Supergiants had listed Visakhapatnam as their alternative

to Pune, though the franchise requested they play their May 1 match in Pune because of a short turnaround; Supergiants also play at home on April 29. Mumbai will decide their alternative venue on Sunday; their options are Jaipur, Raipur and Kanpur.

At a time when several parts of Maharashtra are facing severe water crisis, thousands of litres of water were used for a makeshift helipad at a village, close to the airport, where Revenue Minister Eknath Khadse landed for reviewing drought situation in Latur district. Local officials used 10,000 litres water for the helipad at Belkund village where the minister paid a visit to review the drought

and water scarcity relief measures on Friday. Incidentally, Belkund is just around 40 km from Latur. When asked about this “wastage” when Latur is being supplied water through rail wagons,

Khadse, a senior BJP leader, said he wasn’t aware of the issue. Opposition NCP termed the use of water as “arrogance” of power” by the BJP-led government. the incident shows the government is

Why Odd-Even will be a roaring success : for Arvind Kejriwal

Delhi’s tryst with destiny is back with the oddeven scheme’s return and no matter what happens the scheme will be great for the man behind it— Arvind Kejriwal. The purpose of odd-even is iffy, the goalpost seemed to have shifted from curbing pollution to empty roads, and the AAP is still happy about it. Why wouldn’t it be? It keeps Arvind Kejriwal, the CM of a state the size of a municipality, with limited judicial powers, in the news. “non-serious” on drought and has become “arrogant” due to power. “The minister could have landed at Latur where there is a proper airport and then driven to the village in a few minutes. But Khadse wanted to insult people in the drought-affected area who are struggling for a single drop of water,” he said. Latur is one of the worst-affected districts in Marathwada region and of late two special trains carrying water were rushed to the parched city to tide over the crisis.

Shots were fired in an effort to disperse the crowd after a protest against the deaths of four persons in Handwara turned violent. “A group of protesters were pelting stones

at the (army) camp but the soldiers exercised restraint. However, the situation started going out of hand as a large number of them tried to storm the camp from all directions,” a police official told reporters. Locals said that a protest was held at Natnusa village soon after the Friday prayers. During the protest, villagers clashed with Army personnel

that left one dead and three protesters injured. Arif Dar, a class 11 student, succumbed to his injuries and the three injured have been referred to Srinagar hospital for treatment. to trace the suspected diversion of a Rs.950 crore loan granted to Mallya’s Kingfisher Airlines Ltd by IDBI Bank Ltd. The agency issued a third and final summons to Mallya, asking him to appear before it on 9 April. Mallya did not heed the summons and sought time until May for appearing personally before the agency. It is believed that Mallya left the country for the UK on 2 March using a diplomatic passport issued by the Delhi regional passport office to him by virtue of him being a sitting Rajya Sabha member of Parliament.

ception. Most voters vote based on superficial characteristics like ideological belief, religion, skin colour, sexual orientation and even gender when they should only be based on administrative ability. In the day and age of 24/7 media, it has also become about staying in the news, a trick Arvind Kejriwal has mastered to the T.

Whether it’s abusing the Prime Minister, turning up to show his support for dissenting students (if the area of dissent falls under mainstream media’s purview) or retweeting people who attack the BJP/ RSS/ Centre/ Narendra Modi on social media, Arvind Kejriwal somehow manages to always stay in the news.

“After speaking to the franchises, we have given them four options: Raipur, Jaipur, Kanpur and Visakhapatnam. Mumbai Indians have asked for time till day after tomorrow,” Shukla said. Pune has given Visakhapatnam as its preference.

Mercury rising, but most Indian cities still in siesta mode

The rising Mercury has claimed the lives of 130 people in India, according to media reports. Temperatures broke records in several places, even as the heatwave continued to torment people. Central and peninsular India have experienced the hottest April yet, this year and temperatures are soaring above acceptable limits. Moreover, weather experts predict further rise in temperatures, particularly in western India, Telangana and Rayalseema. India’s signature long, dry and listless summer months have just begun and people are already dying. Last week, the heat wave claimed 66 people in Telangana and 45 in Andhra Pradesh. The vicious summer of 2015 had killed 2,300-plus people, mostly the poor and homeless. The weather forecast for this year is good and bad: While the first official projection of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) will be on April 20, other weather observers have said the rains will be normal. The bad news: The IMD has announced that temperatures will soar higher than normal between April and June and that the frequency of heat waves will be more than normal in central and north-west India. If last year’s summer was an indicator, this year, too, will see deaths. This may sound alarmist but unless city administrations come out with city-specific Heat Action Plans (HAP), deaths are a certainty. Despite the IMD’s advance warnings, only three Indian cities — Ahmedabad, Bhubaneshwar and Nagpur — have come up with robust action plans. The benefits of such an action plan were visible last year in Ahmedabad: There were very few deaths in the city though the temperatures where consistently high. The highlights of the three heat action plans include simple-but-effective measures: Initiating early warning systems and building public awareness through SMSes, building capacity of health professionals, reducing heat exposure and promoting adaptive measures such as cool shelter zones, avoiding power cuts during heat waves and also long-term mitigating plans such as expanding tree planting and gardens, cool roofs, rainwater harvesting, ensuring availability of drinking water and shelter during the hottest times of the day for outdoor labourers and encouraging the use of public transport. None of these are cumbersome and expensive measures but they need advance planning and coordination among different government agencies. Other Indian cities should take the cue from the three front-runners and devise their own city-specific plans because high temperatures are not going to be a one-off phenomenon, thanks to climate change, which increases the frequency and severity of heat waves. While 100 people have died in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, 30 people were killed in Odisha.

The besotted admirer of the title is Gaurav Chandna (Shah Rukh Khan, with protruding teeth and looking years younger than he is), a West Delhi boy who is a lookalike of a fictional matinee idol, Aryan Khanna (Khan again). Gaurav is unabashedly

obsessed with everything that Aryan Khanna does. The walls of his room are plastered with cutouts of the actor in his various movie roles. Even the cyber cafe that Gaurav runs is named after his favourite actor. The fact that he resembles the showbiz icon makes Gaurav a bit of a star in his own right in the neighbourhood. Here’s why… Firstly for any gal including a superstar there is always your Mr Perfect, may be this one did not work out but there are more fishes in the ocean. So Katrina go out there and may be you will find love again, right guys? Ranbir’s non committal status has been common

with all his ex-lovers. And from the very beginning of their relationship marriage talks were strangely only attributed to Katrina. There’s your cue, may be he never would commit. Agency | New Delhi The World Health Organisation has called for a step up in prevention and treatment methods for diabetes to reduce its prevalence. WHO says that the prevalence of the disease has almost quadrupled in the past three decades. In its first global report on diabetes - a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces - the UN health agency warned that cases of diabetes had increased to 422 million in 2014 from 108 million in 1980. The report added that diabetes now affects almost one in 11 adults. ”Both the number of cases and the prevalence of diabetes have been steadily increasing over the past few decades,” states the report, released on World Health Day. It also indicates that among the major factors driving the dramatic rise are overweight and obesity, with one-in-three people being overweight.

In the 119 IPL matches that he has played so far, Gambhir has scored 3235 runs. Agency | New Delhi

Gautam Gambhir has always led his team from the front. Whether it is Delhi Daredevils or Kolkata Knight Riders, the diminutive opener has always believed in letting his bat do the talking. And the results have shown. The southpaw is amongst the three most successful captains

in the Indian Premier League alongwith Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, having led KKR to the IPL twice - in 2012 and 2014. Gambhir was the batting mainstay at Delhi Daredevils when he was bought by Shah Rukh Khan-owned Kolkata Knight Riders for a then record US $2.4 million in the 2011 auc-

tion. And in Wednesday’s match against the Mumbai Indians at the Eden Gardens, Gambhir again led by example scoring 64 from 52 balls (4x4, 1x6). Though the match ended in a defeat for KKR, there was some consolation for Gambhir as his 27 half-centuries are the most by any batsman in the IPL. Gambhir also crossed 1000-run mark at the Eden Gardens. In the 119 IPL matches that he has played so far, Gambhir has scored 3235 runs at an average of 30.23 with a strike rate of 123.99, with 93 being his highest score. But Gambhir will have to be on his toes as David Warner, Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina have all scored 26 half-centuries each in the IPL and would be gunning for more.

Malaysia for final berth in Azlan Shah Cup

Agency | Ipoh India’s chances of advancing to the final suffered a blow after they went down 1-2 to defending champions New Zealand in their penultimate round-robin league match of the 25th Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament on Wednesday. Goals from Ken Russell (28th minute) and Nick Wilson (41st) clinched victory for defending champions New Zealand, who managed to

weather the hot and humid conditions better than the Indians, whose only goal came from Mandeep Singh in the 36th minute. Wilson’s match-winner resulted from a defensive error committed by the Indians as they failed to clear the ball properly in their own striking circle. New Zealand benefitted from the loose ball in the Indian circle in the 41st minute, when a reverse shot from the goal-line

was padded by the Indian goalkeeper and deflected to the middle. Defender Harmanpreet failed to connect in his reflex attempt to push the ball out and Wilson had the easiest task of shooting into the goal for what turned out to be the match-winner for the Black Sticks. An Indian victory on Wednesday would have put them in the final, while a draw would have still kept them ahead of New Zealand.

tobacco in 2007 during his stint as CM, officials from the Gujarat Tobacco Merchants Association and Ahmedabad & Vadodara Paan Bidi Vikreta Association appealed to PM Modi to take a moderate and balanced stand on the issue by quashing the 85 per cent warning rule on all tobacco products levied by the Central government since April 1. “Around 8 years back, when Narendra Modi was CM, he had waived a VAT on raw tobacco after he heard our appeal and understood plight of tobacco farmers here. Tobacco farming in Gujarat is a 150 year old traditional crop and the government encourage us by flagging off the Central Tobacco Research Institute in 1947 to bring better

yield through research and we have benefitted from it. We have never been discouraged by the government to stop tobacco farming. But now bidi manufacturers have shut operations claiming the increase of pictorial warnings from 40 per cent on one side to 85 per cent across the packet leaves them with just 15 per cent space that is insufficient to mention their brand. This directly affects us our ready crop worth Rs 3000-3500 crores which is lying in farmer’s homes in Gujarat and may be destroyed as monsoon arrives, if the issue is not resolved by then,” said Gujarat Tobacco Merchant Association (GTMA) President Bhikhubhai N Patel.
