Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has dismissed reports that he quit as the Defence Minister due to pressure of key issues, like Kashmir. “Reports attributed to me by some news agency regarding my speech at Ambedkar Jayanti is factually incorrect,” Mr Parrikar tweeted today. Mr Parrikar’s office too released a statement saying his remarks on return to Goa after quitting as Defence Minister were in no way linked to the pressure of some key issues like Kashmir. “The speech in

Modi will then head to Botad in Saurashtra to inaugurate phase-1 of Sauni project for Botad and surrounding districts. He will also lay foundation stone for phase-2 of the project. In August last year, Modi had inaugurated the first phase of ambitious Saurashtra Narmada Avtaran Irrigation (Sauni) Project from Jamnagar. Under this project, which

is divided in four phases, the Gujarat government plans to fill 115 dams of Saurashtra region with excess overflowing water of Sardar Sarovar Dam across river Narmada through a web of pipeline network. This is Modi’s second visit to his home state this year. He had earlier visited Gandhinagar on March 8 to address women sarpanchs from across the country on International Women’s Day.

rescue three of them and later retrieved the bodies of the other eight, which included three girls. Nineteen others swam to safety. “It was the time of high tide and some students had ventured into the deep sea. After some of them began drowning, others rushed to save them. But it was too late,” the police said. Sindhudurg police control official Ravindra Ghirkar said that one of the three stu-

dents rescued is in critical condition and undergoing treatment at a hospital in the nearby Malvan region. “Three students have been rescued and are under medical observation,” the police said. “Two of them are admitted in a Malvan hospital and one girl, who is in a serious condition, is being treated at a state-run hospital in Oros,” said Amogh Goankar, Superintendent of Police, Sindhudurg, said.

local language of chief minister (Parrikar) regarding Kashmir issue was in no way connected to his becoming chief minister of Goa which was under the necessity of situation due to coalition partners’ demand,” the chief minister’s office (CMO) said in a statement. “In the speech Honorable Chief Minister had indicated that Kashmir being a sensitive issue needs to be handled through long-term policy frame work,” it added. Mr Parrikar, who was sworn in as the Goa chief minister for the fourth time

last month, had spoken in Konkani while addressing a gathering in Panaji on Friday on the occasion of the 126th birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar. Talking about Kashmir issue at the event, Mr Parrikar had said “It is not easy to resolve the Kashmir issue. There is a need for a long-term policy to resolve the Kashmir issue.” Later, in the same address, he had also said that New Delhi wasn’t a place he got habituated to. “Delhi is not my place. It is not the place I am habituated to,” Mr Parrikar said.

and impose governor’s rule and conduct fresh elections. “I Request government of India and President to dismiss present govt right away,” said. He added governor’s rule must be imposed & elections must be “conducted under governor’s rule”. He also thanked people of Srinagar for their support and said that the results showed people were in support of NC. “(I) thank people who supported (us). This was the bloodiest election ever. Results show that people are in favour of NC,” he said. Though there were nine candidates in the fray, it was, to be fair, a two-way contest between the NC and PDP candidates. Abdullah, 79, was defeated in 2014 General Election from the same constituency by Tariq Hameed Karra of the PDP. However, Kar-

ra resigned recently as a mark of protest against civilian killings in Kashmir. Abdullah has traditionally been strong in his homeground Srinagar. He was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1980 from Srinagar unopposed. He has a strong following in Srinagar, especially in some pockets held by minorities. The voting in Srinagar for the bypoll held on April 9 was abysmally low with just a little over 7 per cent turnout amid boycott call by separatists and militant and widespread clashes between violent mobs and security forces. At least eight people were killed in the violence The polls were held again on Thursday for 38 polling stations and the turnout was a record low for the state–2 per cent.

Powerful people can’t bring themselves to say sorry They say to err is human to forgive divine but conveniently skip over the critical intervening stage of the need to apologise. No doubt this is because saying sorry isn’t easy. It’s an admission of a mistake. More importantly, it would suggest contrition. An apology is, therefore, a humbling experience that few are capable of. Two recent events prove my point. One concerns an MP, a member of a category that considers itself very important. The other concerns the government. Ravindra Gaikwad, the Shiv Sena MP who boasted of beating an Air India manager with his slippers, couldn’t bring himself to apologise. The best he could manage was “to convey his regrets”, but to the civil aviation minister and not the victim of his assault. Even this expression of regret was hypocritical if not, actually, illogical. Speaking in Parliament Mr Gaikwad claimed he had only pushed the official and only after he himself had been pushed around. He also claimed the Air India official had taunted him. In other words he had been provoked. This account of what happened doesn’t suggest regret but an attempt to whitewash the incident and escape blame. To be honest, Mr Gaikwad’s regret was a ploy to get his travel-ban lifted. It’s a shame it was. In his case he didn’t admit to erring, refused to apologise but was, nonetheless, forgiven! I guess this is why the need to apologise isn’t necessary to link erring with forgiveness. The incident connected with the government is worse. It concerns the despicable attack on Africans in Greater Noida. Not once but repeatedly and at multiple levels the government refused to accept the attack was racist. Understandably that stand riled the African ambassadors. How different their response would have been if, instead, the government had said: “Whilst we’re investigating the incident we apologise for what happened. That this should have happened to our African guests at the hands of their Indian hosts shames us.” This simple apology would have defused the situation immediately. Worse, the spokesman of the external affairs ministry called the attack “a criminal act triggered following the untimely death of a young student under suspicious circumstances.” First, that suggested a link between the two and an explanation for the attack on the Africans. Far from apologising this was placing-in-context and, perhaps, justifying why it happened. Even more bizarrely, the spokesman failed to mention that the five Nigerian students initially arrested in connection with the Indian student’s death were released within 24 hours because the police found no evidence to link them to the alleged crime. He also suppressed the fact Abhinandan Singh, additional superintendent of police in Greater Noida, had said there is no evidence that any Africans were involved in the student’s death or, even, that he died of a drug overdose. The spokesman’s intention was to put the best gloss on what happened rather than express contrition leave aside apologise.

Actor Vidya Balan has got another admirer in National award-winning filmmaker Srijit Mukherji. All praises for her, Srijit says it’s a director’s delight to work with an ace actor like Vidya. The filmmaker, who has directed Vidya in his debut Bollywood directorial, Begum Jaan, also adds that Vidya has given an award-winning performance in the film. “I want to work with Vidya in every film of mine [now]. The kind of intensity she brings to the screen with her performance, is extraordinary,” says Srijit. Talking about Vidya’s character in the film, Srijit shares that the nuances she brought to the character can’t go unnoticed. “There are many layers to her character. While she is a strong individual, there are times when she is attractive and feminine too. There is also a maternal side to her character. She has performed the role so brilliantly. I’d say she has definitely given an award-winning performance,” adds the National award-winning director.

Of late, rumour mills have been working overtime as far as Aamir Khan’s heroine in Thugs of Hindostan is concerned. As per rumours, several names such as Alia Bhatt, Shraddha Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sara Ali Khan have been considered for the coveted role in the film that will see Aamir and Amitabh Bachchan working together for the first time ever in the Yash Raj Films’ production venture. But now, HT has got its hands on a leaked look test picture that Fatima, who played Geeta Phogat in Dangal (2016), gave for the Vijay Krishna Acharya-directed film. The actor, looking completely different from her wrestler look (from Dangal), stands out as a warrior. “Makers are still in the process of finalising the female lead,” says a source. “Fatima’s look test picture comes as a shock on several accounts. First, Fatima, who played Aamir’s daughter in their last film, is auditioning for the female lead opposite him.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has recently asked Noor makers to edit a reference to journalist Barkha Dutt in the film. Some media reports suggest that CBFC asked to either entirely remove the reference or beep the word ‘Dutt’ in the film. Now, film’s leading lady Sonakshi Sinha says that censor board needs to have a uniform approach while censoring movies. Sonakshi said. “The censor board really needs to come to a consensus within themselves on what is right in one film… Is not right in another film.” Sonakshi Sinha plays the titular role ‘Noor’ apparently admires journalist Barkha Dutt in the film. When the actor was asked about editing the surname ‘Dutt’, Sonakshi said, “There is no consistency in what they censor or what they censor, so I think they first need to come to a consensus.” Sonakshi earlier said. “I really want people to stop calling it a ‘female or women-centric’ film. When a male actor does it nobody calls it a male-centric movie. A film is a film, you watch it as that, not based on the gender of the protagonist. These headlines that ‘Sonakshi is doing a female-centric film’, it makes no sense. I am an actor, I am doing a film and that’s it. Gender doesn’t have to come in here.” “We as an audience have very recently opened up to receiving a film with a female protagonist.

Rajinikanth: Bharathiraja doesn’t like me as an actor Agency | Bengaluru

Superstar Rajinikanth was at his witty best at the inaugural function of filmmaker Bharathiraja’s BRIIC, short for Bharathiraja International Institute of Cinema, in Chennai recently. He spoke about his ‘complicated’ relationship with the veteran filmmaker, who never accepted him as a good actor. “I like him (Bharathiraja) very much. He likes me as a good person but doesn’t like me as an actor,” he said. “In his old interviews, when journalists used to ask Bharathiraja’s opinion on

me as an actor, he would say, ‘He is a good human being.’ He never accepted me as a good actor,” said Rajinikanth, who enjoys a demi-god status among the fans in Tamil Nadu. “I could read his face and hear his mind voice. He always wondered how I become such a big actor,” he added. He said Bharathiraja asked for his ‘time’ only twice so far. Once for the shooting

of 1977 film 16 Vayathinile and the second time for inauguration event of his acting school. 16 Vayathinile was the directorial debut of Bharathiraja, which had Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. While Kamal played the protagonist, Rajinikanth made a mark in the film as a villain. “I too was a film institute student. Although I learned more from my mentor late K Balachander and other directors on sets, I know how studying in a film school could be helpful in getting the right contacts.

3 / Dt. 16-04-2017, Sunday ‘Mashal Khan Was Intellectually Curious’, Say His Teachers, Friends Agency | Mardan The ransacked university hostel room of murdered Pakistani student Mashal Khan has posters of Karl Marx and Che Guevara still hanging on the walls, along with scribbled quotes including one that reads: “Be curious, crazy and mad.” The day before, a heated debate over religion with fellow students broke out at the dorm and led to people accusing Khan of blasphemy. That attracted a crowd that grew to several hundred people, according to witnesses. The mob kicked in the door, dragged Khan from his room and beat him to death, witnesses and police said. The death in the northwestern city of Mardan is the latest violence linked to accusations of blasphemy in Pakistan. Those who knew Khan described him as an intellectually curious student who openly professed devotion to Islam but asked many questions. “Whatever he had to say, he would say it openly, but he didn’t understand the environment he was living in,” said one of Khan’s teachers at Abdul Wali Khan University, who declined to be named for fear of retribution. Crimes related to blasphemy are a serious offence in Pakistan, and penalties range from small fines to the death sentence. At least 65 people have been murdered over blasphemy allegations since 1990, according to figures from a Center for Research.

‘We Are Giving A Bad Name To Our Country’: Malala Yousafzai On Pakistan Agency | New Delhi

Pro-education activist Malala Yousafzai has condemned the murder of Pakistani student Mashal Khan and said that the terrorising incident has brought disgrace to Pakistan. “Today I heard about the death of Mashal Khan. It is a very agonising incident... This incident alone has brought disgrace to our nation. I urge people to know your religion, values and culture. They have always professed peace and tolerance,” the youngest Nobel laureate said yesterday, in a video posted on Geo News and shared on social media. “We complain of Islamophobia and say that other nations are disgracing us. No one is doing that. It is us who are giving a bad name to our country,” Ms Yousafzai further stated. She also said that she spoke to Mashal Khan’s father, who gave her a message of peace. The activist also said that people have forgotten the true meaning of religion and values. “This wasn’t the funeral procession of just Mashal Khan, but the message of our religion, which is peace and tolerance. We have forgotten our values and are not representing our religion,” the activist said. “Islam does not tell us to be impatient and intolerant,” Ms Yousafzai added. Malala Yousafzai, who was shot at by Taliban terrorists for her pro-education advocacy, also urged institutions in Pakistan to condemn the incident.

Iraqi child with 8 limbs successfully operated by Indian doctors Agency | New Delhi

A team of doctors here has successfully operated upon a seven-month-old baby from Iraq who was suffering from polymelia — a birth defect involving limbs — to give him a new lease of life. Polymelia is a birth defect in which the affected individual has more than the usual number of limbs and, in this case, the boy, named Karam who was brought to the hospital in a very critical condition, had eight limbs. “Both the legs of the baby which were protruding out of the stomach were connected through his sternum (the breastbone) and there was no abdominal wall defect. His blood veins were also adjoined to his liver veins,” Ashish Rai, Senior Consultant, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Jaypee Hospital, told reporters here. With the help of complex microscopic technique, these veins were separated and then his legs protruding out of his stomach were removed from his body. When Karam was brought to the hospital he was just two-weeks-old. His limbs and the intestines were distorted along with situs inversus of the intestine with an extremely rare condition where a conjoined twin did not fully form and was partially absorbed. The team of doctors observed the baby and considering the risk factors, decided to perform the critical surgery in three stages. In the first stage, Karam’s clubfeet was treated and the two limbs which were protruding out of his stomach were removed. In the second stage, the doctors performed “PA Band” surgery so that his left ventricle can control his entire body’s blood circulation after the treatment and he can undergo a ‘Double Switch Surgery’ in future. In the third stage of the surgery, the other two limbs were also removed from his body.

Sanjay Manjrekar responds to Kieron Pollard ‘brainless’ controversy

SPORTS ROUNDUP

The 10th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is just 10 days old but it has already seen its ugly share of controversies. Mumbai Indians (MI) all-rounder Kieron Pollard expressed his anger to Sanjay Manjrekar’s comments during his side’s four-wicket thrilling win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Sunday. Manjrekar had reportedly said, “Pollard does not have the brains to play early in the innings.” Chasing 180, Pollard had struggled to a run-a-ball 17 and Manjrekar opined that Pollard was not suited to bat higher in the order. MI still managed to pull off the thriller courtesy a brisk knocks from Nitish Rana and Hardik Pandya. Manjrekar on Saturday clarified his stance on the

I can be critical but never insulting,” tweeted Manjrekar. The case of misreporting has led to a furore in social media. West Indies cricketer Tino Best had lambasted Manjrekar over his comments in a series of tweets. On a lighter note, in MI’s next game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the same venue, Ravi Shastri shared a light moment

with Manjrekar on the same issue in the commentary box. “Oh, the big man is in the house. Sanjay, your buddy! [Did] You get a chance to speak to him when you went for the toss?” asked Shastri. In middle of the laughter around, Manjrekar replied, “Kept a safe distance. Couple of security guys outside the commentary box as well. That was a shocker, it came out of nowhere, the compliment that he paid me. It just came out of nowhere.”

West Indies cricketer Andre Russell, who played for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL) last year, is busy making his name in another field: music. Virender Sehwag has come in support of MS Dhoni after Sourav Ganguly and Michael Clarke questioned former-India skipper’s batting form in T20s Agency | New Delhi

A number of debates have occurred with regard to MS Dhoni’s batting form recently. The former Indian skipper in the recent past hasn’t been able to perform with his bat. That saw social media abuzz with hashtag of “#Dhonidropped” where users showed opined on Jharkhand captain’s form. Dhoni in the four matches so far in the IPL has scored only 33 runs – 12*, 5, 11 and on Friday scored 5 runs again for Rising Pune Supergiant against Gujarat Lions in

Sehwag emphasised that the position at which Dhoni comes into bat is a difficult one and people need to be patient as he would return with authority. “The position at which he’s coming in to bat is very difficult. One should not judge a player of Dhoni’s stature just by the outcome of three-four games.” Hailing Dhoni’s performance against England in ODI series, Sehwag added that the wicket-keeper batsman is

no way out of touch and added that an Indian side without Dhoni in Champions Trophy should not be expected at all. “He recently scored a match winning hundred against England. So I don’t think he’s out of touch. You can’t even imagine an Indian side going to Champion’s Trophy without Dhoni. Things like this can happen in a tourna-

ment like IPL,” he added. “IPL should not be a platform to judge an experienced player like Dhoni. It’s fine if you judge a youngster on the basis of IPL as it is difficult for a newcomer to showcase his talent in front of a huge crowd.” Earlier, MS Dhoni was removed from Rising Pune Supergiant’s captaincy with Steve Smith taking over.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) registered their second consecutive home win by beating Sunrisers Hyderabad by 17 runs in the match 14 of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Despite a solid start from the SRH openers -- David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan -- KKR bowlers fought their way back with wickets at regular

Farmers’ body raises red flag Gir Somnath: MLA son, 2 others injured in scuffle over toll against textile park in Surat Correspondent | Surat

Stating that setting up of a mega textile park at Pinjarat village in Olpad taluka of Surat district will affect the environment and violate Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ), the Gujarat Khedut Samaj has on Thursday lodged its protest with the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) to drop the latter’s move to set up the same. The chamber had submitted its draft proposal to develop a Mega

Textile Park on the government land to the state chief secretary last week. The Rs 2,000 crore project will come up on 2,000 acres of government land at Pinjarat village. The state government has decided to depute industries commissioner Mamta Verma to the site on April 17 to examine the viability. Gujarat Khedut Samaj president Jayesh Patel on Thursday met SGCCI president B S Agrawal and handed over a memorandum to him. In the memo-

randum, GKS has pointed out that that the project land falls near the coastal area and under inter-tidal zone area, as prescribed by Surat Urban Development Authority (SUDA) plan 2035. This would pose threat to the industries during high tides in the sea. Further, the project land falls within the 500 metre area of Coastal Regulatory Zone and that this would adversely affect hit the fishermen of Pinjarat village by snatching away their livelihood.
