New Delhi : Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar Monday said he is surprised at young glovesman Rishabh Pant’s exclusion from India’s World Cup squad given his “exceptionally” good batting form and “great” improvement in wicketkeeping skills. The 33-yearold Dinesh Karthik pipped Pant in the fight for the second wicketkeeper’s slot in India’s 15-strong squad for the World Cup, starting May 30 in England. Gavaskar said the move is surprising but backed Karthik as a better wicketkeeper. “A bit surprised, looking at his (Pant’s) form. He was batting exceptionally well, not only in the IPL but before that also. He was showing great improvement his wicket-keeping as well. He brings that left-handed option in the top-six which is very handy against the bowlers,” gavaskar said.

SC Asks Rahul Gandhi to Explain Why He Attributed ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’ Claim to Court

New Delhi : Legal trouble seems to be brewing for Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who was on Monday directed by the Supreme Court to explain his ‘chowkidar chor hai’ remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which he attributed to the court. On a day the Supreme Court had allowed fresh documents to be relied upon in a bunch of review petitions in the Rafale case, the Congress leader said the court had upheld that ‘chowkidar chor hai’. But on Monday, the bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi observed that the court had never said anything like this. Appearing for BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi, when senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi said the Congress leader has wrongly attributed statements to the top court, the CJI replied: “You are right to the extent that we

never said anything.” It then decided to seek an explanation from Gandhi after noting that “views, observations attributed to this court in alleged address made by Gandhi to the media and media has been incorrectly attributed to this court”. It pointed out that the court had no occasion to record such views and observations. “ We d e c i d e d o n l e g a l questions of admissibility of some documents. Having clarified, we deem it proper to seek a reply,” ordered the bench. Under the contempt jurisdiction, unless exempted by the court by way of a specific order, an alleged contemnor is supposed to remain present in such a matter. The court, however, said it was only seeking an explanation from Gandhi for the moment, which meant he would not have to appear in person next Tuesday.

Kodinar: BJP president Amit Shah today hit out strongly at Congress party and its president Rahul Gandhi and said that sensing imminent defeat the opposition party under fear has again started blaming the EVMs even though only one phase of the election has happened so far. Addressing an election rally in Kodinar of Gujarat Shah said,’ Congress and Rahul were speaking lies after lies as they have become fearful in their minds of imminent defeat. So far just one phase of election has happened and they have started the blame-game on EVM. Congress is saying that BJP will win due to EVMs. Recently Congress itself won the assembly elections in three states of Rajasthan, MP and Chhattisgarh and EVMs were used there also. Why Congress formed government in those states and took oaths. Wherever they win the EVMs are good and in case of defeat this machines become bad.’ He said that Congress has in fact become puzzled and was

Monsoon Likely To Be Near Normal This Year, Says Met Department

New Delhi : Monsoon rains are expected to be average this year, the India Meteorological Department or IMD said on Monday, which should support agricultural production and economic growth in the country, where half of the farmland lacks irrigation. Monsoon rainfall is expected to be 96 percent of the long-term average, M. Rajeevan, secretary at the Ministry of Earth Sciences, told a news conference. The IMD defines average, or normal, rainfall as between 96 percent and 104 percent of a 50-year average of 89 centimetres for the entire four-month season beginning June. “Overall, the country is expected to have well distributed rainfall scenario during the 2019 monsoon season, which will be beneficial to farmers in the country during the ensuing Kharif (summer-planting) season,” the IMD said in its forecast. The weather office will update its forecast in the first week of June. However, on average, the IMD has forecast accurately only once every five years over the past two decades, even after taking into account an error band of plus or minus 5 percentage points, news agency Reuters said.

Monsoon rains are expected to be 96 percent of a long-term average, the IMD or India Meteorological Department said.

Skymet, the country’s only private weather forecasting agency, earlier this month forecast rainfall could be below normal this year. Monsoon rains, the lifeblood for India’s farm-dependent $2.6 trillion economy, arrive on the southern tip of Kerala state around June 1 and retreat from the desert state of Rajasthan by September. After a wet spell, sowing of summer-sown crops gets off to a strong start, boosting crop yields and output which in turn raises rural incomes and usually lifts consumer spending in the country.

The court only removed a preliminary objection and Rahul said that it has hit out at the government which was not correct. BJP MP Meenaxi Lekhi approached the court and and now Rahul has been given notice to answer the court. Shah also said that Rahul should make his stand clear about Azam Khan’s indecent remarks against Jaya Prada. BJP President said that after Pulwama attack Pakistan had sealed its land borders

BJP Fields Ravi Kishan In Gorakhpur; 'Shoe Gate' Lawmaker Dropped Lucknow : Ravi Kishan, a famous Bhojpuri actor, has been fielded by the BJP as its national election candidate in Gorakhpur, a seat Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held for close to two decades before the party’s shock loss to the Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party coalition in last year’s byelection. Sharad Tripathi, a parliamentarian seen beating a BJP legislator in a widely circulated video last month, however, has been dropped by the party. Ravi Kishan’s last big appearance was in Anurag Kashyap’s critically acclaimed “Mukkabaz”. His last political appearance was in 2014, when he had contested the national election as a Congress candidate from eastern UP’s Jaunpur. He had got only 4 per cent votes. The SP-BSP candidate Praveen Nishad, who had won the Gorakhpur bypoll, recently switched over to the BJP. He has been rewarded with a poll ticket from Sant Kabir Nagar, Mr Tripathi’s

current parliamentary seat. In 2018, Mr Nishad’s shock win over the BJP candidate helped cement the SP-BSPRLD alliance in the state. A week ago, however, his outfit announced it was switching over to the BJP, saying it was upset with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav for not giving them enough seats in eastern UP for the Lok Sabha election. Sharad Tripathi, the current BJP parliamentarian from Sant Kabir Nagar, is not on the list of candidates. Last month, Mr Tripathi was caught on camera hitting BJP legislator Rakesh Baghel with his shoe, with both lawmakers hurling abuses at an official meeting. The fight had broken out after Mr Tripathi asked why his name was not on the foundation stone for a local road.

ILU-ILU with terrorists you do but BJP government would give them befitting reply.’ He also talked at length about various achievements of Modi government including giving constitutional statue to OBC commission and 10% quota for poor people of non-reserved communities but said that the biggest achievement was making the country secure. He also said that Modi alone could ensure the security of the country. Shah also attacked Rahul for his silence on the statement of National Conference leader

Omar Abdullah in which he had talked about a separate PM for Kashmir. He alleged that Rahul was keeping mum for vote-bank. ‘Should anyone support such a party which puts on stake the unity and integrity of the country. So long as even a single BJP worker was alive no one separate Kashmir from India,’ he said. He also appealed the people of Gujarat to make BJP victorious on all the 26 seats of the state. ‘Looking at the scenario during poll time, Narendrabhai’s return to power was sure,’ he said.

“Stop Talking About Pak If You’re Nationalist”: Priyanka Gandhi Attacks BJP

Lucknow : Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, campaigning in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur Sikri today, mounted a two-point attack on the ruling BJP focusing on the narrative around nationalism and the state of potato farmers in the region. “If the government is nationalist then it should respect the fallen soldiers, whether they are Hindus or Muslims. If it is nationalist, it should stop disrespecting freedom fighters who laid the foundation of this country,” Priyanka Gandhi said, sharing the stage with her brother and Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Jyotiraditya Scindia, who is in charge of Uttar Pradesh along with her. “If it is nationalist, it should stop talking about Pakistan in the election rallies. Instead, it should tell the youth, women and farmers of India as to what it is going to do about them,” said Priyanka Gandhi, one of the two Congress general secretaries in charge of UP. She referred to farmers from different parts of the country marching to Delhi and attacked the government for not listening to them.

“If it is nationalist, why didn’t the government meet and listen to the farmers who came barefoot from different parts of India? If it is nationalist, then when people were killed in the name of religion why didn’t it share the grief of the victims, instead of honouring the victims’ murderers? If it is nationalist, why is it afraid of people raising their voice? It feels as if this government is neither proud of democracy nor our institutes nor people of the country. If it is a real nationalist then it would have been on the path of truth. But, it drifted away from it long ago.” The Congress has fielded Raj Babbar, its UP chief, in Fatehpur Sikri, the town of Sufi saint Salim Chishti, who famously guided Mughal Emperor Akbar in his hour of need. Raj Babbar faces a BJP candidate from the Jat community, Rajkumar Chahar. In this seat, the mahagathbandhan candidate Shreebhagwan Sharma aka Guddu Pandit is seen to be a minor player, making it a BJP vs Congress fight.

Lok Sabha Elections 2019 : Ready To Give 4 Seats To AAP In Delhi, Tweets Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi : Rahul Gandhi, speaking for the first time on his Congress party’s attempts at forming an alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), tweeted today, “Our doors are still open, but the clock is running out.” “An alliance between the Congress and AAP in Delhi would mean the rout of the BJP. The Congress is willing to give up four Delhi seats to the AAP to ensure this. But, Mr Kejriwal has done yet another U turn,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted. The Congress president has spoken on the alliance for the first time, though AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal has repeatedly needled the party over it. Both parties seem to have softened their stand after weeks of hard negotiations that

(Prime Minister Narendra) Modi Ji and Amit Shah Ji’s ‘jodi’, we are ready to do whatever is needed. Our efforts will continue till the end.” But soon after Rahul Gandhi’s tweet today, AAP’s Sanjay Singh again blamed the Congress for the dead-end. “In Punjab AAP has four MPs and 20 legislators but Congress (which rules the state) does not want to part with even one seat. In Haryana, Congress has a single MP but does not want to give any seats. In Delhi, Congress has zero MLAs or MPs seemed to go nowhere. Like Rahul Gandhi, AAP (legislators or parliamentarians), they want three also indicated that it was willing to try “till the seats from us. Is this compromise? Why don’t you end”. On Sunday, Arvind Kejriwal tweeted: “The want to stop the BJP in other states too,” tweeted country is in danger. To save the country from Sanjay Singh.

Public policy shouldn’t be shaped in an ethical vacuum

Democratic traditions can take root in strange places and in the most peculiar of circumstances. Ask Sundar Pichai, chief executive officer (CEO) of Google, or Jamie Dimon, chairman and CEO of JP Morgan, whose open letter to shareholders highlights the pitfalls of unrestrained and irresponsible capitalism. Both Pichai’s and Dimon’s responses do send some broad messages to India Inc. as well as to Indian democracy, which is being tested through a lengthy election process to pick the next government. Google had set up an internal ethics committee, called Advanced Technology External Advisory Council (ATEAC), to advise the company’s management on the glide path for increasingly incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) across its suite of products and services. Google already uses AI across its various functions and sought advice from internal and external experts on the ethical implications of using it. The composition of the committee set off a flurry of protests, with more than 2,500 employees signing a petition protesting against the appointment of Kay Coles James, president of right-wing think tank The Heritage Foundation. The employees group at Google, who call themselves Googlers Against Transphobia and Hate, alleged that James had publicly spoken out against gay, trans and immigrant communities and that by selecting her Google was enunciating a version of “ethics” that valued proximity to power (James is said to be close to US President Donald Trump) over the well-being of society’s vulnerable sections. The protesters articulated the reason for their opposition rather succinctly: “From AI that doesn’t recognize trans people, doesn’t “hear” more feminine voices, and doesn’t “see” women of color, to AI used to enhance police surveillance, profile immigrants, and automate weapons—those who are most marginalized are most at risk. Not only are James’ views counter to Google’s stated values, but they are directly counter to the project of ensuring that the development and application of AI prioritizes justice over profit.” Interestingly, Pichai then disbanded the committee. The ethical issues involved in AI are indeed complex and perhaps, to give it the benefit of doubt, Google had not anticipated some of the slippery areas. About 10 months ago, Google was forced to revisit its AI technology policy after employees objected to the company’s contract with the Pentagon for AI in drone technology. Pivot to Jamie Dimon and his letter to shareholders. While reasserting that capitalism is perhaps the only system that works, Dimon also cautions against unbridled capitalism. But then he takes a sudden left turn. He advocates Europe’s model of social democracy, which is undergirded by a robust welfare system. He writes: “It’s essential to have a strong social safety net—and all countries should be striving for continuous improvement in regulations as well as social and welfare conditions…And that may very well mean taxing the wealthy more. If that happens, the wealthy should remember that if we improve our society and our economy, then they, in effect, are among the main winners.” The two examples hold out warnings, or lessons, especially for Indian companies and political parties which, empirically, have not been too fond of mixing business with ethics. The first is how to carefully consider the ethical plane while framing new policy. In recent times, demonetization has been an example of how the ethical implications were ignored in favour of some short-term political gains. The Congress, under the influence of influential businesses in western India, had implemented a freight equalization policy that significantly contributed to the de-industrialisation of eastern India, especially West Bengal. As new technologies, such as AI or Internet of Things, become more pervasive, policy will have to correspondingly incorporate an ethical outlook on how these impact society. In India, for example, AI’s effect on employment and human dignity - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara will become critical. Editor

N e w D e l h i : Ti g e r Woods’s historic Masters title, cheered by fans and celebrities around the world, was a big loss for sports books in Nevada and New Jersey. won’t come close to offsetting the profits amassed during Woods’s down years. Despite a decade of struggles both on and off the course, Woods remained

a favorite among the golfbetting public. It was common for Woods to be the most popular golfer at a tournament, regardless of how long the

odds. “We are still doing well overall with wagers involving Tiger,” Jeff Sherman, vice president of risk at Westgate SuperBook, said in an email. At FanDuel’s sports book, 21 percent of the futures bets placed on the Masters were on Woods to win it all, a slanted total that resulted in a net loss of more than $1 million. The company also ran a promotion for its biggest Masters fantasy contest, where it promised to refund all entries if Woods won the tournament. That resulted in another $1 million paid back to FanDuel customers.

One of the most loved IPL teams of all time, CSK were mired in a controversy after their thrilling win over Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur last week. MS Dhoni had stormed onto the pitch during a tense last over to argue with the

umpires over a no-ball call. MS Dhoni was subsequently fined 50 per cent of his match fee but Virender Sehwag felt he had got away too lightly. Sehwag said Dhoni should have been banned for at least 1 or 2 matches and reckoned the match referee had lost a chance to set an example. However, CSK have moved on from the controversy. A closely knit group, the Super Kings seemed to have plenty of fun and shared some laughs after continuing their winning streak in their away matches.

“I’d Rather Be Truthful Than Correct”: Jack Ma Defends Extreme Overtime

Beyond Jack Ma, several of China’s most prominent industry figures have also weighed in on the controversy.

New Delhi : Billionaire Jack Ma again encouraged tech workers to embrace the industry’s extremeovertime culture, defying a growing social media backlash. The Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. co-founder once more endorsed the sector’s infamous 12-hours-a-day, six-days-a-week routine as de rigueur for passionate young workers. In a lengthy Sunday blog post, China’s richest man expanded on comments from last

Chinese tech workers protested labor conditions on the online code-sharing community GitHub in March under the banner 996.ICU, which quickly became the site’s most popular topic. Beyond Ma, several of China’s most prominent industry figures have also weighed week, in which he dismissed people in on the controversy. SPORTS ROUNDUP

MS Dhoni does not need any back-up in World Cup, Navdeep Saini my 4th seamer: Harbhajan

Coulter-Nile has a stiff back and thus didn’t join the team after Pakistan series.

New Delhi : Rishabh Pant or Dinesh Karthik as back-up for MS Dhoni for the 2019 Cricket World Cup? This decision is likely to weigh heavily on the Indian selectors’ minds when they meet with Virat Kohli to pick the World Cup squad but Harbhajan Singh reckons neither Pant nor Karthik has a place in the squad of 15. The Indian selection committee will meet on Monday to name the 15-man squad for the World Cup and Rishabh Pant is likely to win a berth but Harbhajan Singh said India should instead look at extra bowling options. Harbhajan, who is currently playing the 2019 Indian Premier League for Chennai Super Kings with MS Dhoni, said

a back-up for Dhoni would be a waste of resources. “It’s not that Dhoni does not have niggles. Playing cricket with him I know he has some back issues but with his experience, he knows how to play with all that,” Harbhajan said. “I don’t think you need any backup for Dhoni unless he suffers from any major injury during the World Cup. In case of any minor niggle, you do have KL Rahul in the squad who can keep,” Harbhajan said. “I know there is talk

about Rishab Pant’s X factor but it appears the team management is convinced with Vijay Shankar to start as no.4. You could have gone with Ambati Rayudu but he has perhaps lost form recently which peg him back. KL Rahul would be my back-up batsman in the squad,”. This will be a long World Cup and the format of the tournament will be demanding especially after the Indian Premier League where all of India’s top stars are currently involved.

PSG Title Party Delayed Again After Historic Thumping At Lille

Paris : Saint-Germain missed the chance to seal their sixth Ligue 1 title in seven years for the second week running on Sunday after a 5-1 hammering at Lille, their biggest league defeat in 10 years. Thomas Tuchel’s side could have been crowned champions in record-equalling time last weekend but failed to beat Strasbourg, and they fell short again on Sunday despite needing just a point in a match that saw them have to play with 10 men for 54 minutes and lose both captain Thiago Silva and Thomas Meunier to injury. The loss was PSG’s worst domestic defeat since going down 4-0 at Bordeaux in 2009, and the first time they had conceded five goals in the league since another 5-1 defeat at Sedan way back in 2000. However they are still 17 points clear of second-placed Lille and if they win at Nantes on Wednesday they will still win the league with six matches to spare. “We are going to be champions, but you have to lose in the right way,” said Kylian Mbappe, who had two goals ruled

out for offside. “We can’t lack personality like that, and concede three, four, five goals. Losing happens, but that is not normal.” World Cup winner Mbappe had already had one goal chalked off by the officials when a comical Meunier own goal set Lille on their way after six minutes. But PSG looked set to seal the title when Juan Bernat levelled soon after and Mbappe roofed what looked like his 28th league goal of the season in the

13th minute, only to see that one also rightly disallowed. Silva left the field with a knee injury soon after and after Meunier was pulled off, Bernat was then handed a debatable straight red card in the 36th minute for a tug on Nicolas Pepe despite a VAR check. Attacker Pepe slotted home Lille’s second five minutes after the break when he latched onto a superb Jonathan Ikone through ball and after that the floodgates opened.

Port, Stratolaunch said in a statement. The test team conducted standard aircraft testing exercise including a variety of flight control manoeuvres to calibrate speed and test flight control systems. The Stratolaunch aircraft is designed to act as a flying launch pad for satellites and

put payloads in orbit. With 117 meters wingspan and 73 meters nose-to-tail length, the company describes its aircraft as the “world’s largest plane”. While it does have the largest wingspan, it does not have the longest nose-to-tail length. The mobile launch platform aims to enable airline-style access to space as its centre wing can support multiple launch vehicles, weighing up to a total of 500,000 pounds. According to their website, Stratolaunch wants to “make access to orbit as routine as catching a commercial airline flight is today”.

Supreme Court agrees to hear Narmada has been killed in Gujarat, say activists Members Gujarat BJP MLA’s plea against HC of Vadodarabased non-profit say order dismissing his 2017 election the river downstream

Ahmedabad : The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a petition by Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Dwarka Pabubha Manek challenging a Gujarat High Court order that invalidated his election from the constituency in 2017. The High Court had ordered a bye-poll in the seat. A Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said it will hear the matter on April 22. Manek’s victory had

been challenged by Congress leader Ahir Meramanbhai Marakhibhai on grounds that he had not filled his nomination

accurately. A candidate from Gujarat’s Dwarka seat in 2017, Marakhibhai said in his petition pointed out that Manek had not filled in the name and number of his constituency in the form. Instead, that field contained the name of Manek’s proposer (who recommends a candidate’s name). Manek has been representing the Dwarka seat since 1990, first as an Independent and then with the BJP.

Ahmedabad : A single mother from Jamnagar, whose divorce is in process, has been running from pillar to post to get her daughter admitted under the Right to Education (RTE). While the RTE process in the state has provisions for single mothers, it is only restricted to two categories: divorcee or a widow. A victim of domestic violence for not being able to bear a son, Bhumi Pandya left her husband’s house in Rajkot three years ago with her two daughters, and shifted to her maternal home in Jamnagar. However, little did she know that her personal life issues will hinder her second daughters right to study. Her divorce status ‘inprocess’ stands as an obstacle for her daughters admission. For Pandya who is struggling to make ends meet, RTE was the only hope for her to ensure education for her second daughter. “It has been 11-years of marriage. After birth of my second daughter,

I was subjected to domestic violence. My second child was being neglected by my in-laws and husband. Hence I moved to my mothers house. My sister-in-law passed away in an accident and my brother became handicapped. I had no option but to find a job. But with rising expenses, it is becoming difficult to sustain.” She further added, “I have filed a divorce case which is pending in the court. My husband refuses to give any of his documents for admission nor he is signing the divorce papers. The authorities say that I need to furnish divorce

papers or death certificate, only then I can get admission for my daughter.” Rashid Chaki, a lawyer and a volunteer in Jamnagar, said, “Every year, single women are harassed for documents. In this case, the online application has been filed but when we went to submit the documents, they refused to accept. Since it was a Saturday, I could not meet the DEO. Monday is our last chance, if it does not happen, the child will lose admission under RTE this year.” When DNA approached MI Joshi, director, primary education he was unavailable for comment.

Bharuch : The Narmada river, central India’s mightiest, has been deliberately killed in its last stretch, with grave consequences for farmers, village residents and especially fisher folk, allege members of Paryavaran Suraksha Samiti, a Vadodara-based non-profit. The Narmada originates in the Amarkantak hill in Anuppur district of Madhya Pradesh. It flows for 1,077 kilometres (kms) within Madhya Pradesh. The next 35-kms stretch of the river forms the boundary between Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The next 39 kms form the boundary between Maharashtra and Gujarat, and the last stretch of 161 kms is in Gujarat before the river empties into the Gulf of Khambhat just downstream of Bharuch. “In its last 161 kms, the Narmada, instead of being a perennial river has been converted into a seasonal one, is dry and carries seawater with some industrial pollutants and untreated sewerage, has high chemical oxygen demand (COD), total dissolved solids (TDS) and low dissolved oxygen (DO) and the groundwater near it has deteriorated,” reads a letter the Samiti wrote to a number of nodal agencies including the Narmada Control Authority (NCA), the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC)

Hot potato: Gujarat farmers sued for copyfarming Ahmedabad : The US food and beverages giant PepsiCo has sued three farmers in Gujarat complaining that they have been illegally growing and selling a variety of potato exclusively registered by the company. PepsiCo claimed it has sole rights to grow them to manufacture chips of its brand - Lay’s. Looking at the company’s registration of the potato variety in country’s Plant Variety Registry, the commercial court here last week stayed the farmers Chabilbhai Patel, Vinod Patel, Haribhai Patel - from growing and selling the potatoes till April 26. The court has also sought reply from the three over company’s claims of infringement on its rights. On company’s request, the commercial court judge Moolchand Tyagi appointed advocate Paras Sukhwani as court commissioner to conduct an inquiry into the dispute and prepare a report. PepsiCo India Holdings Pvt Ltd has informed the court that it uses the registered variety of potatoes called FL 2027, which is a hybrid of FL 1867 and Wischip varieties, for manufacturing chips for its brand.

It is a deliberate failure by the state. We will fight with legal means and take this matter to its logical conclusion,” Rohit Prajapati, activist and member of the Samiti told Down To Earth. The non-profit also mentioned that it had carried out an investigation April 6, 2019, testing the water of the river between Nand village, upstream of Bharuch and Bhadbhut village downstream, just before the river estuary in the Gulf of Khambhat. The study found TDS in the river between Nand and Bhadbhut to be in the range of 647— 5,000—20,000—25,500 milligram per litre (mg/l). The normal level, according to river norms is 500
