The maiden seaplane service by Maritime Energy Heli Air Services (Mehair) to Nashik, which was to be launched today, had to be postponed owing to heavy rains in Mumbai last night that resulted in moisture in non-critical components of the Cessna 208A amphibian aircraft. “The regional air connectivity to be launched between Nasik and Pune had to be rescheduled owning to heavy rains in Mumbai last night which resulted in moisture ingress in some of the non-critical components of the aircraft,” Mehair Co-founder and Director Siddharth Verma said here.

Petrol price was on Monday hiked by 64 paise a litre, but diesel price was cut by Rs 1.35 per litre in line with trend in global oil rates. This is the third increase in petrol price since May. However, in case of diesel, the reduction has halted two consecutive increases during last month. The revision in rates will be effective

After the question hour, Banerjee said an adjournment motion was moved by Sohrab which cannot be admitted but allowed him to read it out. Former IPL chief Lalit Modi’s lawyer said on Monday his client could not be termed a fugitive or an offender, while pointing to a ‘political angle’ in a controversy over the granting of UK travel papers to him. At a press conference in Mumbai, lawyer Mehmood Abdi said the UPA government was after Lalit Modi since the time the former IPL commissioner talked about Sunanda Pushkar’s “sweat equity” on Twitter. The court came down heavily on the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) as it opposed the cancellation of the AIPMT, contending there was no guarantee that mass cheating will not be repeated. The court said CBSE should have taken precautions

to stop large-scale copying. In response to the developments, HT reader Manoj said: “The delay is disappointing and it is not sure that all the culprits will be nabbed soon. The affected candidates in this case will be those who qualify but secure lower ranks due to the use of unfair means in the examination and hence they will be deprived of a seat. A retest for all the candidates is not justified and it will time consuming too.

Hence the solution could be to declare the results immediately and conduct an online retest for those who have secured above the cut off marks. The online test could prevent use of unfair means and enable quicker result compilation and declaration.” Another HT reader Kesavadas backed the CBSE and said, “It is true that conducting re-examination for more than 6 lakh students will be a difficult task. CBSE is right in expressing its difficulty. The following could be a solution. Identify a cut off for each category as is done every year. Allow all students above this cut off to write the re-examination. Call it AIPMT (Advanced) & conduct the examination online.

CM-LG face-off : Fighting To Win The enfant terrible of Indian politics, as Arvind Kejriwal is seen by many today, is trying to push the envelope to enhance the powers of the Delhi chief minister and move public discourse towards statehood for Delhi. He knows he will come a cropper without this, with a BJP-ruled Centre not likely to make things easy for him. The court will clarify the grey areas that the lieutenant governor and the ministry of home affairs tried to reinterpret through a notification, but Kejriwal could end up with “ladoos” in both hands. An adverse judgment will win him sympathy, with abridged powers giving him an alibi for failure to deliver on all promises. A victory, on the other hand, could once again make him the hero of Delhi, achieving what his predecessors could not, and its ripples will be felt outside the state. Positing the fight as one between the “Big Brother” Centre and the “poor little” state, Kejriwal has evoked sympathy from other leaders and state satraps, who are wary of an overbearing Centre nibbling into their powers. Leaders like Nitish Kumar, Sharad Yadav, Sitaram Yechury and Omar Abdullah have come out in his support. While he is clearly positioning himself as a Narendra Modi-baiter, Kejriwal may also be laying the foundations of a future partnership with other regional parties — he has struck a rare rapport with Nitish Kumar — though the contours of the new political lineup will become clear only after elections in Bihar later this year and in Uttar Pradesh in 2017. It was, after all, UP and Bihar that between them contributed a whopping 102 Lok Sabha seats to the BJP tally. In its present gambit, as in its career so far, the Aam Aadmi Party has not been like any other political outfit, though many of its disappointed sympathisers now see it like “any other party”. This was the first time in independent India’s history that a civil society movement against corruption spawned a political party every second Delhiite voted for, decimating the 130-year-old Congress and halting the Modi juggernaut. It was, after all, not so long ago that highly regarded activists would come a cropper in elections, whether it was someone like Arun Bhatia, who took on powerful interests in Pune, or leaders of the Jayaprakash Narayan initiated Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Vahini, whose work with the Musahar-Dalits in Bodh Gaya led to the redistribution of land in the name of womenfolk in 1980. When a Vahini leader stood for elections from his “karmabhoomi”, he lost. People did not believe that voluntary workers, dedicated as they were, could become successful politicians. The Asom Gana Parishad had also enthused the young people of Assam in the early Eighties and gone on to win two elections around the theme of Assamese subnationalism. But the AAP’s appeal cuts across caste, class, community. The Janata Party had also come out of the womb of the “JP” movement in 1974, also against corruption, rising prices, and for electoral reforms.

Twitter private messaging characterlimit increased from 140 to 10,000

Agency | New Delhi Looks like, Twitter is betting big on private messaging. In its developer blog, the company has announced it would get rid of the 140-character limit on direct messaging. It will now allow users to send direct messages that are 10,000 characters long. Now, if you are wondering if your tweets will soon support more than 140-characters, then the answer is a clear ‘no’. “You may be wondering what this means for the public side of Twitter.

Nothing! Tweets will continue to be the 140 characters they are today,” the company wrote in a blog. Needless to say, with the fierce competition in the messaging space with the likes of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, the company sure knows instant messaging will be a big deal in the future. However, the new changes won’t come until July. Moreover, Twitter has some recommendations to ensure that the apps and services can handle the longer messaging format.

India Test captain Virat Kohli said he is open to discussing the usage of the Decision Review System (DRS) with his team, even as the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) continues to oppose its employment in matches.

Agency | Fatullah India Test captain Virat Kohli said he is open to discussing the usage of the Decision Review System (DRS) with his team, even as the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) continues to oppose its employment in matches. The rain-marred one-off Test match between India and Bangladesh ended in a tame draw as the hosts finished at 23 for no loss in their second innings after being forced

to follow-on on Day 5 at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium here on Sunday. “You have to sit and analyse and ask the bowlers what they feel about it. Ask the batters what they feel about that,” Kohli was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo on Sunday. “We literally just came into this Test match with very less time on hand. So now that we have time, I am sure these discussions will take place.” India is the only team who insist

on not using the DRS in a series, but things appear to be changing. Last year, Kohli’s predecessor Mahendra Singh Dhoni had opened up on the possibility of India changing their mind about the DRS if it would assess an appeal independently and not try to “justify” the on-field umpire’s call. The situation has changed from when N. Srinivasan, then BCCI president, dubbed DRS “a faulty system” in October 2013.

Positive India aim for win against Guam Agency | Guam

The Indian football team will renew its quest to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup with a qualifying game against Guam at the Guam National Football Stadium here on Tuesday. This will be India’s second match of the second round of qualifiers. India and Guam are in Group D along with Oman, Iran and Turkmenistan for the preliminary league with the top two finishers progressing to the next phase of the competition. India lost their first match of the group 1-2 against Oman while Guam defeated Turkmenistan 1-0. India, 141 in the rankings will need to put their best

foot forward against the 174th-ranked Guam, as the visitors seek their first win not only in Group D but also in the Pacific region. Despite India’s loss against Oman, they offered hope for an improved performance and will be looking to take some aspects of that game on Tuesday. Guam coach Gary White said that they are looking forward to the game. “It’s likely to be a competitive one. Win or

perish - both teams would go out to get those three points. We have watched India’s match against Oman and must say that there seems to be a new life in the Indian team. They looked much organised and it will be difficult to break them down,” White said, in a release on Tuesday. India’s coach Stephen Constantine isn’t willing to read much into the rankings disparity between the two teams.

Telecom services provider Vodafone has increased pre-paid data tariff for 2G and 3G services in Delhi NCR by up to 47 per cent, while MTS hiked rates of post-paid data pack by 8 per cent. The increase comes in the aftermath of March spectrum auction wherein telcos had paid around Rs 1.1 lakh crore to acquire airwaves.

However, Sistema Shyam Teleservices, which operates under the MTS brand, did not participate in the March auction. Earlier, Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular had increased the tariffs for mobile data. Vodafone has increased the price of its 3G pack of 10 GB data to Rs 1,847 with a validity of 28 days from Rs 1,255 earlier.

Veteran Sri Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakkara is likely to retire from international cricket after the first Test against India in Galle later this year. Sangakkara has had a talk with SLC officials regarding his swansong Test and his willingness to play two Tests against Pakistan and the opening game versus India besides his county commitments with Surrey, reported ‘ESPNcricinfo’. The India series, which

is slated for an August 18 start in Galle, was already supposed to be Sangakkara’s final hurrah, but the left-handed batsman was expected to play all the three Tests against India. This means that Sangakkara will not be able to bid adieu in Kandy, but there is a chance that his farewell Test could be moved to his hometown. The 37-year-old former captain had originally intended to retire from all formats following the World Cup, but was con-

vinced to stay on for two more series by the former selectors and captain Angelo Mathews, among others. With 12,203 Test runs, 38 Test hundreds and an average of 58.66, Sangakkara will retire as Sri Lanka’s most successful Test batsman.Incidentally, another Sri Lankan great, Muttiah Muralitharan, had called time on his career after playing only the first Test of the series in Galle, in which the off-spinner completed a Test haul of record 800 wickets.

It is learnt that Shastri would not want anyone — not even the advisory panel of Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman — to interfere, according to a report. “Shastri felt that if he were given a twoyear contract, he would like to run the team his way and would obviously won’t want someone else interfering in policy deci-

As per the report, it is also learnt that former all-rounder had informed the board before taking up the Bangladesh assignment to not consider his name if he was not in the scheme of things for a longer duration.

On Wednesday, 17 June Mumbai Cricket Association’s current President and NCP chief Sharad Pawar will be contesting an MCA election for the first time in over a decade. This time around Cricket First group’s Vijay Patil, backed by Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, is taking on Pawar for the post of MCA’s President. The field of contestants carries a mix of former cricketers and active politicians. There are multiple political angles to the election contest, with Patil’s group fielding two Shiv Sena leaders, Pratap Sarnaik and Rahul Shewale, for posts of vice president

and member of management committee respectively. BJP’s Mumbai chief Ashish Selar, meanwhile, is also contesting for the Vice President’s post from the Pawar-camp. With elections barely a couple of days away, both groups are busy ensuring the State’s political bigwigs are behind their respective candidates.Uddhav Thackeray, who Patil refers to a ‘cricket-lover’ who cares deeply about Mumbai’s cricket, was supposed to meet mediapersons on Sunday but could not. However, he spoke to the voters and requested them to back the Cricket First panel, reported the Times of India. The Sena chief

is expected to brief the media on Monday, the report added. Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, on the other hand, met 16 members of the Sharad Pawar faction and some 20-odd members of government institutions who are eligible to vote. The Chief Minister’s decision to privately address select members of the PawarMahaddalkar group raised a few eyebrows, leading to questions of State throwing their weight behind one group. In an innovative effort to fight electricity crisis in forward areas, Gujarat Frontier of the Border Security Force (BSF) is all set to use solar energy for its out-posts located in remote border areas, where no electrification is possible till date. Union Minister of State for Home and top BSF officials confirmed that Gujarat frontier will soon set up a five mega watt solar energy plant and also separately electrify 20 Border Out Posts (BoPs) by solar energy. “Gujarat frontier BSF has given me a proposal about the solar power project. It will come up soon,” Haribhai Chaudhary, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs over phone. Chaudhary however did not divulged details like cost of the same project. “I can only tell about the cost aspects once I will reach Delhi on Tuesday,” the minister said. Inspector General of Gujarat Frontier of BSF Santosh Mehra said there are two projects on

solarisation, one is a five megawatt solar plant in Nadabet area in border district of Banaskantha and in another project 20 BoPs will be lightened up with solar energy. “In Nadabet area we are going to have about five megawatt solar plant. Some progress is there. The land has been identified and this solar plant will come up,”Mehra. “In another project, we have identified about 20 BoPs (in Banaskantha and Kutch districts),which will stand alone on solar power generation sys-

tem. No electrification has taken place in these BoPS. Only source of electricity over there is generator,” he said. Accusing the BJP-led Gujarat government of commercialising education, the state Congress today threatened to launch an agitation to demand reforms in the sector. “The BJP government has totally commercialised the eduction sector in the state. Private schools are charging exorbitant fees, which is over Rs one lakh annually. But they are not at all in the control of the state government or follow any rules,” state Congress chief Bharat Solanki told reporters here. “We demand that the state government should regulate fees charged by private school or else middle class parents will not be able to educate their children,” he said. He alleged that the implementation of Right to Eduction in the state is

worse than the state Food and Civil Supplies Department, which distributes food-grain through ration shops. The state ranks 16th in primary education and 23rd in the secondary education as per the official figures. The higher education due to privatisation has gone out of reach of middle class students, Solanki said. “The pass percentage of class X and XII have gone down this year by 13 per cent even after the state education department gave grace marks to the students, which tell the overall scenario of education in the state,” he said. Highlighting other issues in education, the Congress leader said 4,000 government schools in Gujarat have just one room and around 10,000 posts of teachers in the tribal areas were lying vacant.

BEd, MEd to be two-year course from this year Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

The BEd and MEd programme will now be two-year course after the Gujarat Education Department decided to implement the 2014 NCERT notification that directs institutes to increase the BEd course period from one to two years. “However, the tenure of the integrated teachers course (graduation and BEd degree) at the teachers university — Indian Institute of Teachers Education (IITE) in Gandhinagar — would remain four years. This would not increase to five,” said GCERT Director Rajesh Purohit. The state offers more than 70,000 seats under various one to two-year BEd

and MEd courses. There are over 900 institutes affiliated to government, private as well as aided universities, that offer the courses. However, only 10 per cent of these seats are offered by the institutes affiliated to government universities, while the remaining 90 under private universities. This also results in variation in the fee structure as private institutes charge much higher fee than the government ones.

Raju lion was like his son to Suleman the Forester

The majestic nomadic lion, popularly known as Raju or playboys and Suleman Timan the Forester, in Gir had an amazing relationship. Raju who died recently was like Suleman’s son. He used to follow Suleman since he was young. Talk to Suleman and he has each and every minute details of Raju. “When he was a child, he had suffered injury and ever since then he became handicapped and use to limp while walking. Raju was like my son and when he was hospitalized, I use to frequently ask the doctor about his health. Being an forest employee we were not permitted to go to the hospital, but I used to get feedback regularly. Call it a mere coincidence, but I had often seen him following me wherever I went. When I was in Dedakadi he was

spotted there, when I was in Kamleshwar beat, he was there and when I was back in the core area of the sanctuary, Raju was there.” “I did not like anything for couple of days when I heard Raju passed away,” says Timan. Even forest officials says that it was an unbelievable relationship in-between a wild lion and a human. Raju passed away before a couple of weeks but his memories and genes will be there forever. Even while Raju was growing up, he loved solitude and lived as a nomad even as an adult. Raju the lion who, was usually seen within the Gir sanctuary area was popularly known as a ‘playboy’ among forest staff. Raju breathed his last at age 10, dying of weakness. He was suffering from paralysis and died as he wasn’t able to hunt anymore.
