SC order, dance bars in Maharashtra to return?

Election posters, banners removed from Patna Airport

Dance bars to reopen in Maharashtra : SC

Agency | Patna

The Supreme Court had in 2013 upheld the right of women bar dancers to follow their profession and dismissed the government’s appeal to ban them

All poll banners and posters were today removed from the premises of Patna Airport here, a day after grand alliance moved Election Commission for removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah’s posters, saying they are “flagrant violation of norms”. “All election banners and posters have been removed from the premises,” Deputy General Manager, Patna Airport N K Chaudhary. He said the action was taken in accordance to the rules.

Agency | New Delhi The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed a state law banning dance bars in Maharashtra, observing the new law is very similar to the one the court had struck down in 2013. A bench led by Justice Dipak Misra, however, added that the Maharashtra police will ensure that dignity of women was not affected by the dance performances and that the licensing authority will also regulate indecent dance performances. The order has been passed by the court as it heard a contempt plea against a 2014-amenndment to the

Bombay Police Act and the refusal of the licensing authority to let dance bars re-open even after the previous law was held bad by the court. The bench will hear the case in detail on November 6. Last year, ostensibly to nullify the SC ruling that had paved the way for dance bar owners lift

Diesel price hiked by 95 paise per litre; no change in petrol rate

Diesel price was Thursday hiked by 50 paise per litre but there will be no change in petrol rates. A litre of diesel in Delhi will cost Rs 45.90 per litre with effect from midnight tonight as against Rs 44.95 currently. At the last revision on September 30, diesel price was cut by 50 paise. This is the second increase in diesel price in four months.

real issue flagged by the SC. “A large number of imaginative alternative steps could be taken instead of completely prohibiting dancing if the real concern of the State is the safety of women,” the court had said in its order, while emphasising that the state had failed in establishing that such restrictions would be reasonable or be in the interest of general public. The SC had added: “It would be more appropriate to bring about measures

as “unfortunate and unwarranted” the lynching of a man in Dadri over rumours of storing and eating beef and opposition to Pakistani singer Ghulam Ali’s concert. He was speaking to the Bengali daily Anandabazar Patrika. “The Dadri incident or the opposition to Pakistani ghazal singer Ghulam Ali are sad and undesirable. But what is the role of the central government in these incidents?” Modi told the daily in an echo of what a clutch of central ministers have been telling newspapers over the last few

days. “This controversy has arisen in the past too. The BJP has always opposed fake secularism (meki dhormoniropekkhota). Today, in the face of this sad social ailment (dukkhojonok shaamajik byadhi), this controversy has arisen again. This dispute can be resolved through consultations (Aalaap-alochonar madhyom-e ei bitorker niro-

The prime minister had during an election speech in Bihar some days back decried incidents of violence between Muslims and Hindus but this is the first time he has talked specifically about the Dadri lynching incident. While

his statement would widely be viewed as his finally succumbing to increasing pressure from opposition and academics – who have been on an award returning spree, from Sahitya Akademi to Padmashree – Modi has in his brief interaction with the largest circulated Bengali daily, hit right back at his opponents accusing them of polarisation. “BJP does not support such incidents. By bringing them to the fore, the opposition it trying to accuse BJP of communal politics. But don’t these attempts show that they are the only ones practicing the politics of polarisation?”

Writers as dissenters: Badges of honour dulled by shame The brutal repression of April 13, 1919 has made Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, a permanent marker for State zulum. The carnage is regularly invoked to deplore what is seen as government-perpetrated horror. Especially when innocent persons fall to police firing. But the invoking invariably works against the analogy. “Where is Jallianwala Bagh,” observers react at once, “and where is this…” Nothing, really, can be compared to General Dyer’s decimation of people, as yet unconvincingly counted, in that death trap of an enclosure. But I want to refresh readers’ memories of something that followed Jallianwala Bagh. This is the reaction and action of two individuals to the massacre. And that action has a name — relinquishment. This step in relinquishment, to use a word of lesser moral voltage than ‘renunciation’, was taken by two Indians —Rabindranath Tagore when he returned his knighthood, and Mohandas Gandhi when he returned the Kaiser-i-Hind medal (and two other medals) in protest against Jallianwala Bagh. “The time has come,” Tagore wrote to the Viceroy, in May 1919, “when badges of honour make our shame glaring in the incongruous context of humiliation.” He went on to say “I for my part, wish to stand, shorn of all special distinctions, by the side of those of my countrymen who, for their so called insignificance, are liable to suffer degradation not fit for human beings… And… ask Your Excellency, with due reference and regret, to relieve me of my title of Knighthood…” Writing to the viceroy shortly thereafter, Gandhi deplored “the punitive measures taken by Gen Dyer, Col Frank Johnson, Col O’Brien, Mr Bosworth Smith, Rai Shri Ram Sud, Mr Malik Khan, and other officers” as being “a wanton cruelty and inhumanity, almost unparalleled in modern times.” And in protest said: “I venture to return these medals…Valuable as these honours have been to me, I cannot wear them with an easy conscience…” For both Tagore and Gandhi “the time had come” for that act of relinquishing. And the alarum had been rung by their consciences. Some 65 years later, by which time India had become independent of the Raj, another event occurred in Amritsar, spurring the writer Khushwant Singh to return a decoration awarded to him by the Republic of India. Fear and its antidote, courage, are not the monopolies of colonialism. They have an indigenous version.

National award winning filmmaker Anil Radhakrishnan Menon considers forthcoming Malayalam fantasy drama Lord Livingstone 7000 Kandi as the most challenging project of his career. “It was physically taxing. After announcing Ranveer Singh as the lead actor of his upcoming flick ‘Befikre,’ Aditya Chopra has now revealed that his leading actress would be Vani Kapoor. The Yash Raj Films recently took to Twitter and shared a three-minute video of the 27-year-old actress introducing herself as the female lead of the flick, reports the Express Tribune. In the video, the ‘Shudh Desi Romance’ star is seen explaining her two-year absence from the silver screen saying, “These years have been tough. After winning most promising debut awards, I expected my office to flood with offers but things did not fall into place the way I pictured.” She further mentioned that the 44-year-old director had asked her to keep faith in

Gossip mills are abuzz with rumours about a change in casting for Don 3. We hear Katrina Kaif is in consideration to succeed Priyanka Chopra, who featured in the first two parts of the action flick as Shah Rukh Khan’s leading lady. If the makers manage to strike a deal with Kat, it will be her second outing with SRK after Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012). An industry insider says, “The makers want a new face

They feel she is one of the few actresses who can comfortably do high-octane action scenes.” Both Katrina and Ritesh Sidhwani, producer of the ‘Don’ franchise, did not respond to our text messages. Agency | New Delhi With pulses spiking to a record of up to Rs 190 per kg, the government today swung into action with a number of measures including use of price stabilisation fund and imports to cool prices and create a buffer stock. An inter-ministerial group headed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley reviewed the price situation as rates peaked to Rs 187-190 a kilogram in retail markets across the country. Jaitley said the government has decided to invoke the Rs 500-crore Price Stabilisation Fund that will be used to pay for transportation, handling, milling and processing — aimed at reducing the cost of imported pulses. This would help in increasing supplies and making pulses available in the retail markets at lower rates. Also, states have been asked to lift stock of pulses lying at ports like Jawaharlal Nehru Port near Mumbai. To deal with supply crunch, the government has also decided to create a buffer stock of lentils mainly through imports, Jaitley said.

Tata Motors share price surges over 8% on JLR sales numbers

Agency | New Delhi Tata Motors share price surged over 8 per cent on Thursday after the auto maker informed BSE that its UK based luxury car unit, Jaguar Land Rover’s retail sales rose 3 per cent to 47,634 vehicles in September 2015 over September 2014. The share price of Tata Motors jumped 8.06 per cent to Rs 380.70 on BSE. JLR delivered a solid performance in the month, with sales jumping 22 per cent to 10,394 vehicles in September 2015 over September 2014. The increase reflects strong sales of the all-new Jaguar XE sports saloon in markets in which it has gone on sale since May, with China sales only starting in September and US sales set to start in 2016. However, Land Rover retail sales fell 1 per cent to 37,240 units in September 2015 over September 2014. Around 17.70 lakh shares exchanged hands on BSE on Thursday as against an average daily volume of 11.17 lakh shares in the past two weeks.

Ranji Trophy: Rahul, Nair look to make mark as Karnataka face Vidarbha Agency | Bengaluru

KL Rahul and Karun Nair would look to put up impressive show before the national selectors meet to pick the Indian Test squad for the South Africa series, as Karnataka take on Vidarbha in a Group A Ranji Trophy match here on Wednesday. Rahul, who is making a comeback after recovering from the quadriceps strain that he had sustained during India’s tour of Sri Lanka in August, will be desperate to make to mark. He has played a stellar role in Karnataka’s success story in last two seasons. Last year, he notched up 838 runs from five matches and became the first Karnataka batsman to score a triple centu-

ry in the domestic circuit. The 23-year-old will look to continue the success story this season too, besides returning to the Indian team. Karun, who was recently called up as a reserve for the India Test team against Sri Lanka, would want to carry forward his form that he showed against Bengal in the last match. He made a mincemeat of Bengal bowling

with a crushing century, which put Karnataka in the driver’s seat. Shishir Bhavane (119) and bowling-allrounder Shreyas Gopal (139) will also be high on confidence after their fine tons that helped Karnataka amass 537 runs for nine declared. Also one of last season’s top scorers Robin Uthappa and Manish Pandey will be eager to showcase their skills.

Sourav Ganguly to take over as CAB president from October 15

The toughest call in a cricketing career is when one has to walk away from the game itself. You almost ‘will’ yourself and want to push that few, extra miles but then the body, after nearly two decades, decides not to respond. As I was training for the upcoming season, it dawned on me that my shoulder may not last the rigours of bowling nearly eighteen overs a day, and that’s when I knew it was time.. With immediate effect, I bid adieu to my career in international cricket. I look forward to signing off my last season in domestic cricket at the conclusion of Indian Premier League season 9. As a kid from a small town Shrirampur, I gave up a career in engineering to pursue bowling. My parents backed that decision and every decision since! My dad, I distinctly remember said, ‘Engineers toh bahut saare hein tu bowler hi ban na!” I fondly remember my initial days, way back in 1996 at National Cricket Club at Cross Maidan to the call up for the Mum-

bai Under-19 team. My crucial months of training at the MRF Pace Foundation, my debut with Baroda in the Ranji trophy to going on to leading Mumbai, I have cherished every game. Each game was an opportunity that allowed me to express myself freely in the best way I could – on the cricket field, always trying to improve as a player. Leading up to my debut for India in 2000 and beyond, I got crucial

opportunities, with people backing me at different and difficult stages and I was able to contribute to Indian cricket and learn many things along the way. I was able to try out different ideas while playing because of the unconditional support I received from my Captains and Coaches, who trusted and supported me in setting fields or trying a different approach or tactic that was loaded with risk.

Dhoni on Wednesday scored a match-winning 86-ball 92 in the second match to guide India to a 22-run victory and level the ODI series 1-1. “It is not an easy game that we play, a lot of people wait with open swords and want you to make mistakes and have fun with it,” Dhoni said after India bowled out South Africa for 225 in 43.4 overs, in

a chase of 248. “It was a good game for us. There were a few soft dismissals and we didn’t score something which was par on this wicket. We didn’t start well with our bowling, but our spinners did well and gave us the breakthrough and later the pacers also came into action and gave us those wickets which were needed at that point of time. So, overall I would not say it was a complete game because definitely we can play much better with our skills but it is good to win games,” he added. Dhoni made it clear he was not completely happy with the performance of his team but said it was good to win after a series of losses. “It is not every time you lose in home conditions. Yes, we didn’t play to our full capacity, we are not even 80% of what we can, so overall it was a good team performance. As a batting unit we may not have scored something which we could have defended but the bowlers showed that we are able to defend that.”

iPhone 6S, 6S Plus India launch: Bookings miss target

Agency | Kolkata pple’s aggressive sales strategy in India may have backfired to some extent as bookings for the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus have fallen short of expectations, said some of the company’s trade partners. Against a bold target of tripling pre-bookings for the devices, which will be available in India on October 16, these have risen by just 10-15% compared with last year for the previous models, the partners said. They said buyers expect lower prices online once the phone becomes widely available. Thanks to lower online prices, Apple’s ambitious sales target for the new generation of devices could still eventually be met. Earlier this year, Apple had allowed its distributors to sell at the lowest price to the e-commerce channel, leading to a surge in sales after having followed a conservative line that meant all vendors had to hold their rates at the company-mandated level. Adding to buyers’ hesitation on pre-bookings is price. The entry model costs Rs 8,500-9,500 more than last year’s launch price, said the executives cited above.

While Ganguly replaces the departed Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Jagmohan Dalmiya, the Special General Meeting

on the morrow would also see the formal entry of the late cricket czar’s son Avishek into cricket administration, completing the change of guard. Dalmiya junior would be the association’s new joint secretary, a post held by Ganguly since July last year. Subir Ganguly is likely to continue as the other joint secretary and Biswarup Dey as the treasurer. While the talismanic ex-player would be the first Test cricketer to head the cash-rich CAB, Dalmiya’s stint is also likely to be watched with

keen interest – with sporting circles likely to draw constant parallelis with his famous father. But it is Ganguly who would be under constant scrutiny. During the twilight of his playing career, Ganguly was told by a journalist that he was under the scanner. He promptly replied: “I’m always under the scanner, mate”. There are indications that the coming days would be no exception. “inefficiency and “negligence” that has been levelled against a section of the CAB for the fiasco.

More Asiatic Lion Cubs Sighted Anandiben Patel launches in Gir Sanctuary in Gujarat 16-channel educational network With several new Asiatic lion cubs being sighted in Gujarat’s Gir wildlife sanctuary, the forest officials are expecting more tourists to the national park which opens tomorrow after being closed for four months. “We have sighted about 100 Asiatic lion cubs in the sanctuary during the four-month closure period which is likely to attract more tourists, including foreigners, to the place,” Gir National Park’s Deputy Conservator of Forests Sandeep Kumar told over phone today. This is the first time foresters have seen a substantial jump in the cub count, he said. Gir sanctuary is the sole

home of Asiatic lions and is considered to be one of the most important protected areas in Asia due to its supported species. It remains mandatorily shut for four months during the monsoon period. “The four months’ closure from June 15 to October 15 this year was part of the management plan since it was mating season for the wild animals. The chances of

visitors sighting the cubs have increased as many of the little ones are in the tourist zone of the forest,” he said. “As per the 14th lion census conducted in the wildlife sanctuary in May this year, there are 523 Asiatic lions in Gir forest, other protected areas and revenue areas in Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Amreli and Bhavnagar districts of Saurashtra region

Indian wind turbine manufacturer Inox Wind Ltd (BOM:539083) said Thursday it has successfully commissioned several wind parks with a combined capacity of 116 MW in the northwestern state of Gujarat. The company completed the projects for local firms Sembcorp Green Infra and Tata Power, as well as for public sector undertakings (PSU) such as Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd. The plants are expected to generate enough electricity annually to save 170,000 tonnes of standard coal

of Gujarat. It means the population has increased by 112 as compared to 411 counted in 2010,” Mr Kumar said. “We have seen an increase in the number of cubs with each passing year. It is possible only because of the cooperation that the forest department gets from villagers and patrolling staff. People immediately inform us if they see an injured cub in the area. This helps reduce mortality,” the forest official said.

Maharashtra and Gujarat seems to be having the largest cheese loving population in the country. Nearly half of the cheese produced in India is consumed by these two western states. This could be gauged from Gujarat’s penchant for cheese. Gujaratis are known to grate dollops of cheese over street food including double cheese pizza, cheese poha, cheese idli, cheese bhel and even cheese on dahi-puri and dahi kachori! The industry players peg the size of cheese market in India at 29,000 tonnes per annum. As per the International Market Analysis Research and Consulting (IMARC) data cited by Mumbai-based Parag Milk Foods Limited, Maharashtra tops the list with 33% share followed by Gujarat (16%), Delhi (7%) and Tamil Nadu

(7%) and Karnataka (6%). Both the western states approximately consume 14,000 tonnes of cheese annually. Considering the rapidly expanding cheese market, cheese makers are ramping up production capacity. “Amul currently produces 40 tonnes per day cheese and we are increasing the capacity three times to take it to 120 tonnes,” said RS Sodhi, managing director, Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCCMF), which markets Amul brand products. “The cheese consumption is growing rapidly in the country. Over the last five years, the segment is growing at roughly 25% per annum,” said Devendra Shah, chairman, Parag Milk Foods Limited, which sells cheese under ‘Go’ brand. In value terms, the market is estimated to be around Rs 850-1000 crore.

Around 16,000 chemists across Gujarat downed shutters on Wednesday to protest against the online pharmacies. The impact was seen in all major cities of the state including Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat. As part of the one-day nationwide strike demanding crackdown on online drug sales, 2,732 stores remained closed in Ahmedabad, while 3,500 retail and wholesale chemists in South Gujarat joined the strike by keeping their stores closed. Nearly 1,400 shops across Vadodara and Chhota Udepur districts participated in the strike called by the All India Organization of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) demanding action from

the Union government against online sales of medicines. “There should not be any sale of medicines through online pharmacies. The Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, allows sale of medicines only against prescription by doctors and only by licensed chemists. The sale of drugs through online pharmacies is impacting the business of physical stores. Also, these pharmacies sell

medicines rampantly, without prescriptions, which is not good,” said Jashvant Patel, president of Federation of Gujarat State Chemist & Druggist Association. In order to ensure that patients do not face any difficulties, some of the medical stores were kept open. Hospitals were given advanced deliveries of essential and life-saving drugs. Stores at city-hospitals were operational.

Hardik Patel said he had “learned from sources” that Amit Shah has been tasked with mediating to end the Patel agitation. “Since we will not end the stir merely on his request, we know that he will use other tactics and force our movement to finish. So I have issued that open message asking him to stay away,” Mr Patel said. BJP leaders here did not react to Mr Patel’s comments and said they do not know of any plans for Mr Shah to visit Gujarat to resolve the reservation row. In Mr Patel’s challenge to the BJP chief, they see a new attempt to draw attention. “Even if you kill me, thousand oth-

er Hardiks will rise. Try to accept our demands and give us justice. Otherwise, do whatever you can do,” said Mr Patel, who has alleged that he is being prevented from holding rallies and public meetings

in Gujarat at the behest of Mr Shah, whose party governs the state. Hardik Patel is demanding that either the Patels, wealthy and politically influential, be included among the castes that benefit from

affirmative action in Gujarat, or then all quota be scrapped. He has also repeatedly reminded the BJP that the Patels have played an important role in powering its political ascent in Gujarat.

pro-quota protests. “A sort of caste-war kind of situation is building up in the state,” he said, adding that his information was based on reports from the police and civil administration. Stating that people have put up banners barring political leaders from entering their localities, Thakore said the possibility of politicians being targeted could not be ruled out. Responding to this, ACJ Patel said: “Keep in mind that you are an independent commission, neither controlled by the state government

or anyone else… It is as if you have decided to postpone the elections. You are proceeding like that only… Your privilege should be exercised for furtherance of democracy and not for dilution of the principles of election.” The bench was hearing a petition filed by two persons from Gandhinagar and Bhavnagar challenging the state government’s ordinance that allowed the poll panel to postpone the polls on the ground that the situation was not conducive for holding free and fair elections.

Hardik Patel, Gujarat’s 22-year-old politician, has in a message shared on WhatsApp, asked BJP chief Amit Shah to “stay away” from the agitation he is leading for reservation in government jobs and colleges for the Patel community in the state. “I request Amit Shah to stay away from the Patel community’s agitation to get reservation. We will not stop it just because you want it. The agitation will not stop till I am alive. And if you still want to crush the stir by force, then you will have to kill me,” Hardik Patel said. In Ahmedabad, also Amit Shah’s home-town,
