IPL 8: Delhi snap up Yuvraj for Rs 16 crore BANGALORE Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh set a new record as he emerged as the costliest ever buy in the Indian Premier League by going for a whopping Rs 16 crore to Delhi Daredevils while an unheralded K C Cariappa was a surprise pick in the eighth players' auction on Monday. In a relatively low

key auction, Yuvraj triggered an unexpected bidding war with four teams vying for the 33-year-old cricketer's services before Delhi clinched the deal for a record price. That Yuvraj, who had been bought for Rs 14 crore by Royal Challengers Bangalore last year, went for such a big price came as a huge

surprise given the fact that he is no longer in the Indian team. His current form, however, has been good which could have led to the franchises showing interest in him. "I think we learnt from last year, and that if we want a player we need to push hard for him. Hence we were prepared to go all the way with Yuvraj and it's

India signs nuclear pact with Sri Lanka, countering China NEW DELHI Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena signed a deal with India to receive training for his country’s civilian nuclear program, a sign of improving ties as he looks to reduce the island nation’s dependence on China. Mr Sirisena, on his first overseas tour since winning an election last month, hailed his country’s close relations with India in a joint briefing with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Under the deal, India would provide knowledge and expertise to Sri Lanka as it seeks to build a nuclear plant. “The bilateral agreement on civil nuclear cooperation is another demonstration of

our mutual trust,” Mr Modi told reporters today (Feb 16). “This is the first such agreement that Sri Lanka has signed. It opens new avenues for cooperation.” India is one of the few countries with expertise in reactors suited to smaller power grids, and state-run

Nuclear Power Corp. has previously expressed interest in exporting them. An international embargo placed on India over its atomic bomb tests in 1974 and 1998 was lifted seven years ago, allowing the nation to begin selling reactors overseas.

great for the player as well," Delhi coach Gary Kirsten said justifying the record bid for Yuvraj. Wicketkeeperbatsman Dinesh Karthik was another player, who commanded a massive price, going to RCB for Rs 10.50 crore at a glitzy auction attended by business bigwigs, Bollywood stars like Preity Zinta and former cricketers such as Anil Kumble, Ricky Ponting, Stephen Fleming and VVS Laxman -- part of various teams' support staff. A 20-year-old Cariappa, an off-spinner who has not even played a first-class match, was a stunning pick by the Kolkata Knight Riders. Cariappa was bought for a Rs 2.40 crore in what was perhaps the most shocking buy in an auction where veterans such as Kumar Sangakkara went unsold despite being brought back in the pool thrice. Sri Lankan

captain Angelo Mathew (Rs 7.5 crore to DD), New Zealand pacer Trent Boult (Rs 3.80 crore to Sunrisers Hyderabad), Indian legspinnerAmit Mishra (Rs 3.50 crore to DD) and Australian opener Aaron Finch (Rs 3.20 crore to Mumbai Indians) were among those who fetched a good price at the auction. Sri Lankan stalwarts Mahela Jayawardene and

Tillakaratne Dilshan, Indian pacer Irfan Pathan, South African batsman Hashim Amla and New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor went unsold in the initial rounds of the auction. They might still find a buyer in the final round of bidding. Indian pacer Zaheer Khan, who initially went unsold, suddenly saw a dramatic change in his fortunes when he was brought back in the pool as he went for a hefty Rs 4 crore to Delhi Daredevils. In all, 88 players went under hammer, of which the franchises bought 67. 23 of the players sold today were overseas picks. The franchises shelled out Rs 87.6 crore in purchasing the players today. Yuvraj, who carried a base price of Rs 2 crore, was sold after a

fierce tug of war for his services between Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore, who bought him last year for Rs 14 crore, at a city hotel here. Initially, there was four-way bidding among Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers, Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Daredevils to buy India's 2011 World Cup hero in the auction conducted by Richard Madley. But once the bidding reached Rs 7 crore, RR and KXIP quit, leaving DD and RCB in the fray. Delhi Daredevils, who had the largest purse of Rs 39.75 crore among all the eight franchises taking part in the auction, also bought Mathews for Rs 7.5 crore, the third highest price in the first two rounds of auction.

100 more deaths in 3 days, RR Patil: A hardcore politician yet an swine flu toll jumps to 585

efficient administrator with a warm heart

New Delhi The death toll from swine flu this year has soared to 585 with 100 more casualties reported across the country in three days since February 12, prompting the Centre to order additional stocks of medicines and diagnostic kits. While the total number of swine flu deaths had stood at 485 till February 12, the latest official data released Monday says 100 more people succumbed to the H1N1 virus in the three days till February 15, taking the toll to 585. Altogether, 8,423 people have contracted swine flu this year in the country. ajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh

and Maharashtra are the worst-affected states with their respective tolls standing at 165, 144, 76 and 58, official figures said. n February 15 alone, Rajasthan reported 12 deaths while there were eight fresh casualties each in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. While Delhi and Tamil Nadu have reported a high incidence of swine flu cases, the death toll in the two states is relatively low due to high level of awareness and a better developed health sector. unjab has the highest ratio of the number of deaths to those affected by the disease. Thus, 25 of the 68 people who contracted the

virus in the state this year have succumbed to swine flu. ealth ministry officials said they have sent central teams to the worst-affected states like Rajasthan and Gujarat and have developed appropriate guidelines. The government has already placed an order for enhancing stocks of diagnostic kits — for testing for the H1N1 virus — to be supplied to the lab network under Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme. To enhance the level of preparedness, additional stocks of the drug, Oseltamivir, and 10,000 N95 masks are also being procured,” an official statement said.

Sangli, I had an opportunity to work closely with RR Patil for seven years. I was the secretary of departments he headed-home and rural development. I should say I was pretty much impressed by his way of functioning-whether it was handling the government department and political management. A down to earth person who came from humble background, RR would often come across as a soft speaking, courteous politician who would treat everybody with respect. However, at the same time, he was a hardcore politician who knew the pulse of the people. He knew what he wanted to do, how he would manage the same and what his party needed. Politicians do have their political agenda which they try to implement once they are in power. If their ideas are not practical or difficult

to implement, there is bound to be friction between them and the bureaucracy which is supposed to handle the implementation of their decisions. This is where RR's skills were visible. He respected bureaucracy. In public he would never let his officers down though privately he would have different opinion. He was always open to discussion and would listen to the viewpoints of others. He knew how to strike a

balance between the political agenda and the government's duties. A case in point was the dance bar ban which was a tough call for the government. Though he was being criticized for it, RR was convinced that he was doing the right thing. He would often refer to the exploitation of women in the dance bars. It was his conviction and he stuck to his guns in the face of criticism. He was absolute politician, often a step ahead of many

others. He was a good strategist and could anticipate the impact of his decisions. He had equations across the partylines. On several occasions, while we in the administration were wondering about how getting a particular decision cleared in state cabinet or getting a bill passed in the assembly, RR would handle the political management well. "You don't worry about that. I will handle it," he would say and work the phone.

‘NH10' talks about friction between different Indias Director Navdeep Singh, best known for his impressive debut ‘Manorama Six Feet Under’, is back with Anushka Sharma-starrer ‘NH10' which, he says, is a dark and gripping tale about the struggle between different Indias. “It is very dark but at the same time a very gripping and compelling watch. There are many Indias in this country. There are different realities to a city and they all co-exist but they don’t know each other. When they accidentally meet, sometimes in bad circumstances, there is friction, a struggle. ‘NH10' talks about this friction,” ‘Manorama Six Feet Under’, a critically acclaimed murder mystery starring Abhay Deol and Gul Panag, somehow escaped viewers’ radar when it first released seven years ago but has since acquired a cult status. Ask him about his delayed follow up, Navdeep admits that things did not pan out well following his debut. “There were many, many false starts. I was to do ‘Basra’ but that did not take off and then I was doing another film called ‘Rock the Shaadi’. We shot some of it but then it got stalled. “It has been seven years but every person has a journey. It has also to do with the kind of films you want to make. If you want to make a big commercial film or have made something big then things become easier. You get only this much petrol on critical acclaim,” he says. Produced by Eros International, Phantom Films and Clean Slate Films, ‘NH10', also starring Neil Bhoopalam and Darshan Kumar besides Anushka, is scheduled to release on March 6. The story revolves around a young upper middle class couple Meera and Arjun, driving to a well-earned weekend getaway. But their road trip goes awry when they decide to step into a fight between some villagers. Navdeep says Anushka, who is making her production debut with the film, was always the first choice but the script did travel to other actresses, including Freida Pinto, before it finally came back to ‘PK’ star. “I don’t know why I thought of Anushka. She seemed the right physical type. I wanted someone who could play vulnerable and also become strong. I needed both these qualities and she seemed the right fit,” he says.Navdeep says Anushka liked the script in one reading. “She read the script in one sitting and got very excited about it. Her brother also liked the story. It was a very spur of the moment decision. She said she was ready to produce it, if it helped. She has been very supportive.” Neil Bhoopalam, who plays Anushka’s partner in the movie, jumped to Navdeep’s attention with his role of a young politician in TV show ’24’. The director feels the industry still does not take the audiences seriously. “We still underestimate our audience. The modern Indian audience is very smart and discerning and they do know what they are watching and why they are watching. They are very receptive to films,” he said. Navdeep, however, is hopeful that with younger stars opting for interesting stories things would slowly change for better. “The films with stars get more visibility and thankfully younger stars are turning to good stories be it Anushka in ‘NH10', Deepika Padukone and Arjun Kapoor in ‘Finding Fanny’ or Shahid Kapoor in ‘Haider’. They too want to do films that they like to watch,” he says. Navdeep has “a cupboard full of stories” and wants to make films that he would like to watch.

Distributors of Rajinikanth’s ‘Lingaa’ to beg for compensation

Aarohi Keshav Shirke, which raised her to immense popularity. So much so, that the actress was addressed by the name by her crazy fans. This has attracted a lot of brands in the Marathi regions to have Shraddha to endorse their products. The actress has already locked a realty brand in Pune and is endorsing it. She is their first celebrity endorser.

Deepika Padukone has become a trend setter of sorts. Be it her films or her endorsements she continues to do things which are out of the orbit. Recently the ace actor came on board as the brand ambassador of the sports brand Nike. The

brand is known for having leading sports persons from across the world as ambassadors and this is the first time they have a Bollywood celebrity on board. Being a badminton player herself Deepika has a very high sports connect.

She often talks about sports and is also well connected in the fraternity. The brand did an extensive survey before taking this decision. It was a big step for them as they would be altering their policy and were initially apprehensive to change their stance. However, after much discussion the sports brand felt that Deepika brings on board the perfect connect and glamour. She currently has highest youth connect amongst audiences at large. They will be peddling the campaign on Deepika thorough out the World Cup. The brand personally also adds to Deepika’s brand kitty. She endorses 16 brands and yet this one is a big win. Last year, Deepika also started her clothes line with another brand. She always tries to do things a little differently. Deepika has three big releases lined up this year. She has wrapped up the shoot of Piku and is currently busy with the shoot of Tamasha. She will soon start shooting for Bajirao Mastani.

Salman Khan's upcoming sequels

Distributors of superstar Rajinikanth-starrer ‘Lingaa‘, who demanded compensation for the heavy losses incurred while distributing and exhibiting the film, have decided go on a mass begging protest. The distributors and theatre owners have decided to beg for compensation after their plea for refund of Rs.35 crore was declined by producer Rockline Venkatesh. “Last month it was decided we will be compensated after extensive accounting of the

losses. And for this, Rajini sir had appointed his friend and distributor Tirupur Subramaniam, who ascertained the quantum loss suffered by us. However, the producer is unwilling to pay Rs.35 crore,” distributor Singaravadivelan told IANS. He claims Eros International had bought the theatrical rights of K.S. Ravikumar-directed “Lingaaa at a whopping price of over Rs.100 crore. “The amount we claim as refund is far less than the salary paid to Rajinikanth. If

Eros had paid so much to buy the film, we don’t understand why it is difficult for producer Venkatesh to refund us when he had promised us that the film will do better business than ‘Enthiran’,” he said. The mass begging protest is expected to start from Tuesday from outside actor Rajinikanth’s residence. “They’ve made us beg for the refund. And we will do it as we’ve run out of options. We will beg right outside Rajinikanth’s house,” he added.

The actor-director celebrated his birthday with an intimate family dinner at

a suburban Mumbai eatery attended by various members of the Kapoor

clan, which is the closest Bollywood has to royalty. The birthday boy brimmed with happiness as he posed with daughters Karisma and Kareena, both in black. Kareena, who was at the dinner with her husband Saif Ali Khan, looked uberglamorous in a singleshouldered LBD, which she accessorized with emerald earrings. Saif, in a velvet blazer, was as well-turned out as his wife.

A Salman Khan movie touching the Rs. 100 crore mark is an obvious thing. He's the Bhai of Bollywood and undoubtedly, one of the biggest stars India has ever seen. Be it the multiplexgoers in metros or singlescreen audience in the small

cities of country, Salman Khan effortlessly connects with all sections of audience. A movie critic had once said that reviewing a Salman Khan film was like ironing a pair of jeans, it was pointless. People will go and watch it anyway.

Miller makes his mark at WC 2015

M.S. Dhoni fails to collect 'souvenir' bail after Pakistan victory

Ahmedabad

SPORTS ROUNDUP ICC WORLD CUP-2015 COUNT-DOWN

India vs Pakistan, World Cup 2015: ‘V’ Day on Feb 15

There have been numerous instances throughout the colourful history of the World Cup, dating back to India’s great all-rounder Kapil Dev’s masterful performance with the bat to rescue his team from embarrassment against Zimbabwe at the 1983 World Cup. Dev’s innings provided the catalyst not only for his personal career, but was also the launchpad for India’s maiden World Cup triumph in England 32 years ago. Without wanting to look too far ahead in terms of a team perspective and what South Africa could yet achieve here in Australasia, David Miller

produced a similar rearguard innings yesterday at Seddon Park against, ironically the same African nation, that could catapult the Proteas left-hander to place among the game’s elite. South Africa were stumbling along at 83/4 when JP Duminy joined Miller in the middle. With the partisan Zimbabwe crowd in rapturous mood on the grass embankment, the pressure was on. South Africa could easily have capitulated to a score in the region of 200, which on a tiny ground such as Seddon Park would have been well in reach of Elton Chigumbura’s team.

The rise of Afghanistan cricket

Everyone is aware of Mahendra Singh Dhoni's penchant for collecting stumps as souvenirs after every India win but just like last year's World Twenty20 in Bangladesh, he won't be able to collect any during the ongoing ODI World Cup irrespective of his team's victories. The World Cup in Australia and New Zealand again has the LED stumps, which are touch-sensitive and blink whenever the bails get whipped off. Just after India completed their win against arch-rivals Pakistan yesterday at the Adelaide Oval, Dhoni took one of the bails but then Ian Gould, who was the square leg umpire, had a friendly chat

with him after which one saw the bail remaining where it is. The specific reason being that these set of 'LED stumps' cost USD 40,000 (Rs 24 lakh) and the pair of bails costs as much as an iPhone 5 (Rs 50,000 approx). So Dhoni won't be able to keep any of these bails or stumps unless there is an official permission from the ICC in this regard. The 'LED stumps' were first used during the 2013 edition of 'Big Bash' after which they were used on an experimental basis at the World T20 in Bangladesh, where the response was pretty positive. "Well, this is a very costly system. The entire set-up during a match

Sourav Ganguly gets life membership of MCC

costs USD 40,000 (Rs. 25 Lakh approx), so I don't allow the players to uproot it during any celebrations," EcKermann, the inventor of 'LED stumps'. That Eckermann and ICC are strict about it can be gauged from the fact that all the patented stumps and bails are kept intact. It had taken almost three years of research from Eckermann to give his dream a shape. Eckermann, along with David Leigitwood as a commercial partner, formed Zing International and sold his idea to Cricket Australia. The touch sensitive stumps need to be handled with care and Eckermann had then said that Lasith Malinga's yorkers is something that "scares him" as they can break the stump into two pieces.

Simon Crompton, 51, has been manning the Adelaide Oval’s more than 100-yearold scoreboard for more than three decades now. He has several stories about the venue, one of them has Virat Kohli in it. Early 2011, days after India and Australia had played the final Test of the series where Kohli scored a hundred, Oval hosted a Sheffield Shield game between South Australia and a Michael Clarke-led New South Wales. Now, over to Crompton: ‘I was stripping Indian names off the scoreboard preparing for the new game. The

NSW players had finished training and were hanging around. On the grass bank there was this plank that said ‘Kohli’ and it got the players started. They stamped it by their feet till it got dented. Some even poured beer on it. There were laughs around but I knew they didn’t like him.’ There are many who don’t like Kohli. Not that he cares, for there are many who love him. Every day, since October 2, when he reached 4 million on twitter, he gets 11,000 plus followers. Today at the Oval, had someone dared to stamp on anything with Kohli written on it, cops

in Adelaide would have been dealing with assault, murder and arson. In the game that mattered so much to so many, Kohli scored many. 107 from 126 balls, one-third of India’s total of 300, a target that proved too imposing for Pakistan to chase under lights, and under pressure. It was timely return of form for Kohli, who after 4 Test centuries in the series against Australia had 4 single-digit scores in the triseries that followed. Come the World Cup, the big match, fans chanting and PM Tweeting, it was time for Kohli to rise.

Yograj Singh blames MS Dhoni for son's exclusion from World Cup; Yuvraj doesn't agree It was only 20 years ago that Afghanistan formed as a Cricket Federation (now known as the Afghanistan Cricket Board) so, in that sense, they are the 'new kids on the block' at this ICC Cricket World Cup. Afghanistan began this incredible journey in earnest in 2008 entering the World Cricket League Division 5. Following what can only be described as a meteoric rise, Afghanistan is currently ranked as the top Associate nation with a current ICC world ranking of 11. They are (alongside Ireland) knocking on the ICC's door in their quest for Test status.

In my opinion, Afghanistan has the talent, ability and, most of all, the self-belief to get there. The first time I watched Afghanistan play was back in 2009 at the World Cup Qualifying tournament in South Africa. They met Ireland in the Super 8 stage at Krugersdorp. I was rested from this match with Patella Tendon soreness (or 'old age'), so I had the chance to watch from the sideline. Afghanistan posted 218 on a wicket that was low, slow and turned. It must have been an ordinary deck if Andrew White got 2-25 off 10 overs!

Blacksmith Genesis Compact 3D Printer-Cum-Scanner Unveiled

The world's first compact 3D printer-cum-scanner that can also scan items has been unveiled at the American Association Advancement of Science (AAAS) annual meeting in San Jose, California. Blacksmith Group start-up at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) launched Saturday the user-friendly all-in-one device, named the Blacksmith Genesis.

The $2,200 (roughly Rs. 1.36 lakhs) device allows users to scan any item, and then edit the digitised model on the computer and print it out in 3D, Lester Kok, assistant manager of NTU's Corporate Communications Office, told Xinhua news agency Sunday. "Most 3D printers sold on the market now are not really user-friendly as their 3D models and blueprints usually have to be designed from scratch on the computer," Kok said, "but Blacksmith Genesis doesn't require much knowledge of 3D software."

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has been awarded the honorary life membership of the prestigious Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). "Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Club to former India captain Sourav Ganguly," the MCC said in a statement. Ganguly, who has also been a member of the MCC World Cricket committee since July 2014, averaged over 40 in Tests and One Day Internationals for India and took 132 wickets across 424 matches. He

made his Test debut at Lord's in 1996, scoring 131 in his first innings and etching his name on the famous Lord's Honours Board in the process. Ganguly was made India captain in 2000 and went on to lead his country in 195 internationals. He also captained India to a famous victory in the 2002 NatWest Series Final at Lord's - a match which was voted the greatest ever Lord's match in a poll conducted by The Times and Lords.org last year as part of the Ground's bicentenary celebrations.

KC Cariappa: KKR's new spinner on the block Who is KC Cariappa? That was the first question nearly everyone would have asked once Cariappa was bought by defending IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders for an astonishing sum of Rs 2.4 crore ($400,000), 24 times his base price. Konganda Charamanna Cariappa is a 20-year-old legspinner from Coorg in Karnataka. Curiously both the BCCI and the Karnataka State Cricket Association had

him listed as an off-break bowler. However, Cariappa, known as Carri to his team-mates, confirmed he is primarily a legspinner with a grip that allows him to bowl off breaks and leg breaks. At 5 feet 11 inches, Cariappa is tall for a spinner and bowls with an orthodox round-arm action. The leg break is his stock ball, and he has variations like the googly and the faster one.

Yuvraj Singh, Yograj Singh, MS Dhoni, ICC World Cup 2015, ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, World Cup 2015, Cricket News New

Delhi: Yograj Singh, father of discarded Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh, on Monday blamed Indian skipper MS Dhoni for the all-rounder's

exclusion from India's squad for ICC World Cup 2015. "If MS Dhoni is having personal issues with my son, I won't do

anything. God will do justice," Yograj said. Notably, Yuvraj, Man of the Series in the 2011 World Cup, was one of the five senior Indian cricketers who were ignored by the selectors for ICC's pinnacle event. "Pray India wins World Cup under your captaincy (MS Dhoni) but nothing can be more sad that you behaved this way," Yograj added. Yuvraj, however, defended his father's statement and said that his father got carried away with him not playing the World Cup and he always enjoyed playing under MS Dhoni. Yuvraj Singh, along with Gautam Gambhir, Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan, were excluded from India's 30-man squad for the prestigious event.
