The tape contains telephonic conversation between Lalji Patel (the leader of Sardar Patel Group) with Khodabhai Patel, another leader of the community, and has gone viral on social media. Lalji’s Sardar Patel Group (SPG) and the Hardik Patel-led Patidar Anamant Andolan Samiti (PAAS) are two separate groups leading quota agi-

While Hardik and some other PAAS members are behind bars in the sedition case, Lalji is presently leading the agitation. “We will never get reservation under OBC quota as we (Patels) do not fall in the criteria of getting the quota as it is for those who are backward...and if we insist, then all other communities will stand up against us and class-conflict will start. CBI files charge sheet against Peter Mukerjea in Sheena Bora case Agency | Mumbai
The CBI filed a charge sheet in a Mumbai court against former media baron Peter Mukerjea, arrested in connection with the Sheena Bora murder case. The agency filed the supplementary charge sheet in the case before additional metropolitan magistrate R V Adone in Mumbai. Peter was arrested on November 19 last year for his alleged role in the murder conspiracy and had been in CBI custody for two weeks. His wife Indrani Mukerjea is the prime accused in the case. Peter’s bail plea was rejected on
February 12 by a special CBI court which observed that the charge sheet was yet to be filed and investigation in the matter was still on. While Mukerjea (59) is lodged in Arthur Road prison, Indrani is in Byculla women’s jail, both in Mumbai. Others arrested in the case are Sanjeev Khanna (Indra-

JNU controversy: Can Rahul revive Congress on the campus
Three back-to-back issues – FTII row, Rohith Vemula’s suicide and now JNU controversy – have infused fresh energy to the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the Congress party’s student wing, which has been struggling to regain its space in campus politics. The last two have also prompted the NSUI to reach out to Left, Dalit and other organisations in a bid to launch a united front against its arch rivals Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). And at the forefront of the NSUI revival efforts is Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi who joined the students twice at the University of Hyderabad to protest the suicide of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula. Gandhi also backed the agitating Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students who were protesting the arrest of their leader Kanhaiya Kumar. Kumar has been booked under charges of sedition over a protest organised in the JNU campus on February 9 against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. The Congress vice-president had earlier visited the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) at Pune to express solidarity with students protesting against the appointment of actor Gajendra Chauhan as its chairperson. The intent is clear – the Congress is desperately trying to win back not only the support of the Dalits, who have moved away from the party over the years, but also the youth and student community which, to a large extent, had deserted it in the wake of a series of corruption scandals during the UPA rule. While the half of India’s population of 1.25 billion is under 25 years of age, 65% people are 35 or under. Their disillusionment with the Congress saw groundswell of support for the anti-corruption movement launched by Anna Hazare in 2011. The NSUI had lost the Delhi University polls for the second consecutive year in 2015 and its presence remains negligible in JNU campus. “This will certainly help NSUI to reconnect with the student community. ABVP is creating trouble in every university. They (ABVP) have got a protective umbrella in the form of central government and are using it to their advantage. The Congress revival is also linked to NSUI resurgence,” CP Bhambri, political analyst and a distinguished scholar at JNU said. However, the NSUI has tried to make a clear distinction as far as the JNU row is concerned. It has strongly condemned the “eulogising” of Afzal Guru and at the same time maintained that any attempt to label the institution as “anti-national” was “unacceptable”. “We respect the verdict given by the Supreme Court and there is no second-guessing that he was a terrorist and it should not even be a subject of discussion.

Anil Sant, deputy commissioner of income tax, informed the company’s Vodafone International Holdings BV Dutch unit of its dues in a letter dated 4 February, according to the document, a copy of which was seen by Bloomberg News. Vodafone, in a statement, said: We can confirm that we have received a tax reminder from the Tax Department that also references asset seizures in the event of non-payment. This dispute is currently the subject of international arbitration.

Data released by the commerce ministry on Monday showed merchandise exports contracted 13.6% in January while merchandise imports shrank 11% leading to a trade deficit of $7.6 billion. In the same month, China’s exports fell 11.2%—the seventh straight month of decline, while imports tumbled 18.8%—the 15th month of decline, both far worse than expected, data released by the Chinese General Administration of Customs showed on Monday. Cumulatively, during April-January, India’s exports fell 17.7% to $217.7 billion while imports shrank 15.5% to $324.5 billion resulting in a trade deficit of $106.8 billion.

It seems like Apple Store isn’t the only facility Apple plans to open in India. The first offshore technology development centre at Hyderbad is in the works. Following Google and Microsoft’s footsteps, Apple is showing greater interest in the Indian customer with plans to set up a 2,50,000 square feet technology development centre at the Tishmna Speyer’s WaveRock facility in Hyderabad’s IT corridor. The facility is expected to open in June. It is expected to be operating in full swing by the end of 2016 and create 4,500 jobs. “It’s a very positive development as Apple has not looked at cities only in India, but across many places in Europe and other parts of the world. Their decision to have the facility in Hyderabad is a strong endorsement of the city as a major IT hub in the country,” Jayesh Ranjan, Secretary to IT department in the state of Telangana said.

The order is TPREL’s fourth project with Inox Wind taking the cumulative orders placed with the energy solutions provider to over 300 MW, Inox Wind said in a statement today. A controversy on Monday erupted in Gujarat’s Junagadh in light of a letter purportedly “issued” by the district administation to the subordinates sought information at the behest of the Chief Minister’s office, about the ruling BJP’s debacle in panchayat polls last year.
