‘Stepping Back a Little Bit’: Shashi Tharoor Virtually Rules Out Contesting Possible CWC Polls

Indian cricket fans might be amused to learn that the Indian Premier League has a South African clone. But they will hopefully be less happy to know that the tournament is a shop window for South African cricket’s racial biases. The clone is the recently concluded SA20 tournament, in which all six teams are owned by and named after IPL franchises. Like the IPL and similar events around the world, it is meant to offer fans of the T20 format a festival of local talent and imported stars. But in South African cricket, almost three decades after white rule ended, ‘local talent’ means ‘local white talent.’ Racial bias is deeply embedded in South African cricket. White players are assumed to be skilled even when they clearly are not. Black players, which here includes anyone who would not have been classified ‘white’ during the Apartheid, including players of Indian origin, have to prove their merit — and are not always assumed to have it even when they do. Makhaya Ntini, the third most successful Test match bowler in the country’s history, was selected only because a cricket administrator determined to end the white monopoly in the sport forced selectors to choose him. Hashim Amla, the only South African to score a triple hundred in Test cricket, was maligned for his so-called ‘lack of technique’. South Africa’s current premier fast bowler Lungi Ngidi faced an extreme backlash from retired white male cricketers for speaking up in support of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020. This bias has been softened by social pressure for teams to be more representative of a population in which only about 8 per cent are white. So, provincial franchises and the national team have a sprinkling (often a minority) of Black players.

‘Finish Off Siddaramaiah Like...’ In Poll-Bound Karnataka, BJP Minister’s Remark Hots Up Savarkar vs Tipu War

Narayan’s statement comes just a day after state BJP president Nalin Kumar Kateel stirred up another controversy when he said staunch followers of Tipu Sultan should not be alive and the former ruler’s descendants should be driven away into the forests.“Do you want Tipu or Savarkar? Where should we send this Tipu Sultan (Siddaramaiah)?

What did Uri Gowda, Nanje Gowda do? You should finish him off the same way,” Narayan had said while addressing BJP workers in Mandya

A visibly angry Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah not only urged the Bengaluru Police to take up a suo moto case of ‘death threats’ by the two BJP leaders but also questioned the minister about instigating people. “Aswath Narayan, why are you trying to instigate people? Get the gun yourself,” he said in a strongly worded tweet. “What do you mean by saying finish off Siddaramaiah like how Tipu Sultan was? It is an offence and it attracts the Indian Penal Code.

Manchester United, Barca add glamour to Champions League

They’re two members of European football’s aristocracy who, not so long ago, were meeting in the Champions League finals. Now Barcelona and Manchester United are going headto-head in the unlikely confines of a Europa League playoff match. Not that they are playing like also-rans of the continent. “At the end of the day, we don’t deserve to be in the Champions League and neither do they. But the level is still very high,” Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez said on Wednesday. Indeed, the clubs with two of the biggest followings in world

football are in a good place on the field, especially considering the plight they have found themselves in recent years.Barcelona are emerging, very slowly, from a crippling financial crisis that cost the club Lionel Messi and plenty more. Their economic situation is still grave — Barcelona’s latest accounts show the club is more than $650 million in debt — but the team is performing so well that they have an 11- point lead in the La Liga. United, meanwhile, are rising up the Premier League and could win their first trophy in six years when meeting Newcastle in the final of the League Cup later this month.
