Guj Govt Will Never Acquire Land for Corporates: CM Public function in Bharuch on Thursday, Patel alleged that some political parties are "misleading" farmers about the bill Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

Amidst controversy surrounding the Land Acquisition Bill, Gujarat Chief Min-

ister Anandiben Patel on Thursday assured farmers that her government would never acquire their land

forcibly to give it to corporate houses. While speaking at a public function in Bharuch on Thursday, Patel

Gujarat HC rejects gangraped woman's plea to terminate her pregnancy Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

The Gujarat High Court has rejected the plea of a woman who sought to terminate her 28-week pregnancy, after being allegedly raped by seven men, since her husband is unwilling to accept her child. Justice J B Pardiwala rejected the plea while stressing on laws which cannot permit medical termination of pregnancy after 20 weeks since it could endanger the woman's life. The High Court directed the Botad district Superintendent of Police (SP) to take over investigation of the rape case. The HC also ordered the Botad district collector to keep a close watch on the gangraped woman's family members, including her husband, in order to ensure that all medical facilities are given to the woman

to deliver her child. "The child should be looked after well and must not be abandoned in any manner. If necessary, the district collector can avail of the services of any NGO, government organisation or social organisation in this regard," the High Court said. "I am conscious of the fact that to carry a child in her womb after an act of rape is not only extremely traumatic for her but also humiliating, frightening and psychologically devastating. In Indian society, she becomes an object of scorn and ostracisation. This is very unfortunate," Justice Pardiwala said in the 38page order. "However, at the same time, assuming for the moment that termination at this stage is permissible, there would be a likelihood

of danger to the life of the applicant in case of carrying out termination of pregnancy. If labour is induced to carry out termination of pregnancy, in every possibility, the same would result in a live birth of a new born as maturity of foetus is 28 weeks," the order said. "The applicant will have to bravely go ahead with the pregnancy and when time comes, she should deliver the child. I am conscious of the fact that it is easy for a judge to say so in his judgment because it is ultimately the applicant who will have to face hard days ahead. Yet, howsoever harsh one may find the law, it remains the law and one has to respect it. She must understand that termination at this stage will put her own life in peril," he said.

BJP mocks Rahul Gandhi's return, says he is 'confused' Agency : New Delhi BJP on Thursday greeted Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi's return with sarcasm and asked him to tell the people whether or not he wanted to continue in politics. Noting that he has been in the news for all the wrong reasons, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra offered his "congratulations" to Congress upon Rahul's return and said that the vice president and his party were both confused as to their future. "He (Rahul) is confused. He does not know what he wants to do with his life, whether he wants to continue in politics. He has to answer to the people. "Congress is confused because it does not know what it has to do with Rahul, whether to elevate him or marginalise him," Patra said as he spoke about a

"vertical split" in the party. Congress has become a "rudderless ship" and is suffering from a "leadership crisis", he said. "This is the first time in Indian politics that an important member of a political party was absconding for such a long time that his return has become news. This is news for all the wrong reasons," Patra said. Union minister and BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said it was a "concern" for Congress that Rahul was making

news for his "disappearance" and "appearance". Meanwhile, Congress leaders voiced confidence that Rahul will provide leadership with dynamism and commitment and take pro-active measures. "He is back and I have no doubt that he will be not only taking proactive measures but also with dynamism, with commitment provide leadership," Congress leader Anand Sharma said, adding that farmers' issue has been close to Rahul's heart.

She said while devising this new bill Prime Minister Narendra Modi has kept the interest of farmers in his mind. The chief minis-

ter asked the farmers not to listen to those opposing the bill, since according to her, they are hindering the development process, the release stated. Speaking about BJP government in Gujarat, Patel stated that during the last 15 years, it had never acquired land forcibly from any farmer. "All land required to lay canals from Kevadia to Kutch was given by farmers voluntarily. I want to assure you that except for public utility works, not even

"As we look into future, I think we are extremely well placed ... Our deal wins, our order-book and the client sentiment look positive," TCS Managing Director and Chief Executive Natarajan Chandrasekaran told reporters here. (Rs 676 crore) because of the "cross currency headwinds to the profit, which grew 12.4 per cent if we factor in the impact of the one-time outgo because of the bonus to the employees", he said, adding the pre-tax margins were at 27.2 per cent. The Tata Group company, however, remains very upbeat about the next fiscal (2015-16) and will continue to outgrow the industry, he said. Facebook and Gmail: what happens to data after your death? In 2005, a motorcycle accident took the life of 22-yearold Nebraskan Loren Williams. In an effort to find out more about her son’s life, Karen Williams obtained his Facebook password from a friend and emailed the social networking company asking if she could log into the account and read his posts. Within a couple of hours the password had been changed and she was locked out. By logging in to her son’s Facebook account, Williams was in breach of the terms of service. Under US law Williams was forced to sue Facebook Inc in order to obtain a court order to gain access to the account. At the time, this case was unique but as social networking sites grew in popularity, more users inevitably meant more deceased users. Their next of kin – and the legal system – began to think about what it meant for a person’s ‘digital remains’ to lie within the database of a third party service provider such as Facebook, Google or Yahoo. “Once upon a time we had this shoebox filled with letters and photographs. We’re now creating this situation where a lot of what we do is being committed to digital storage,” says Damien McCallig, final year PhD candidate in the School of Law, National University of Ireland, Galway, where his research is on the law of digital remains. “The difficulty is that after you die nobody can get into those [social media accounts] unless they have your password. And if you do log in, for most of these, you’re actually in breach of the terms of service. “If you read Facebook’s terms and conditions, very clearly, even with their updated service, it says that if you log into somebody else’s account it is a breach of service and they will cut access to it.” In the 10 years since the Williams case, Facebook has provided options other than granting access to family or friends of the deceased: an account can either be closed down or ‘memorialised’, which is essentially an account frozen in time. Facebook friends can view all the content they were once able to and can still write on the deceased’s timeline but the account no longer appears in public spaces such as birthday reminders. More recently, Facebook introduced the notion of the ‘legacy contact’, essentially allowing a living user to nominate a contact to manage their account if memorialised after death. This feature, however, is currently available in the US only. By and large, other social media platforms have more or less the same approach to the rights of the deceased and how they are transferred to next of kin. “All of these accounts – it could be anything from MMRPG accounts [such as World of Warcraft] to online gambling accounts, Twitter, Dropbox, you name it. In general, you are the creator of what you put on there and you have copyright,” says McCallig. If what you create and store on a social media account is viewed by the law as your intellectual property, then you are the creator and you hold copyright. McCallig explains that while you can stop people using or reproducing this content, you have no automatic right to access it; it is the terms of service of the social media platform that are allowing you to do so.

Margarita, With A Straw Movie Review

Agency : New Delhi Director Shonali Bose and lead actress Kalki Koechlin are on top of their respective games in Margarita, With a Straw, an offbeat drama that is both sensitive and provocative. The wonderfully well-scripted film (screenplay: Bose and Nilesh Maniyar) focuses on the most intimate physical and emotional needs of a woman with cerebral palsy. It delivers a poignant and uplifting portrait of an individual determined to live life

to the lees despite all the odds she faces owing to her restricted motor skills. Margarita, With A Straw narrates its emotionally arresting and startlingly revelatory story without resorting to the mawkish or the preachy. It is the sophistication of the making that stands out: Margarita, With A Straw is adroitly crafted. It eschews tear-jerking theatrics. And it does not take recourse to any shrill remonstrations to get its point across.

JLR purchasing director Ian Harnett said: "Jaguar Land Rover is one of the UK's success stories, not simply because it has seen an upsurge in demand thanks to sustained investment, but because it has been able to support a burgeoning, hightech, highly skilled supply base here in the UK. "With each successive new or upgraded model, we are seeing the positive impact felt amongst the entire automotive sector which is great news for everyone committed to ensuring the UK remains truly competitive on a global stage."

Agency : New Delhi Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal today regained the number one position in international rankings after China's Li Xuerui dropped a couple of rungs to third in the latest list issued today. Saina, the first Indian woman shuttler to be world number one after her India Open Grand Prix Gold triumph earlier this month, had dropped to the second place following her semifinal finish in the Malaysia Open Super Series. She skipped last week's Singapore Open Super Series but gained in the

rankings after Xuerui also pulled out from the tournament, leading to loss of two positions in the women's singles chart. Elsewhere, P V Sindhu dropped out of the top 10 and was placed 12th this week after slipping three spots. In the men's rankings,

K Srikanth retained the fourth spot, while P Kashyap rose a rung to 14th owing to his semifinal finish in the Singapore Open. H S Prannoy, who ended a quarter-finalist in Singapore, slid one spot to be 15th in the rankings.

Agency : Ahmedabad Skipper Steve Smith struck his maiden IPL half-century as the young Australian led Rajasthan Royals to a comfortable seven-wicket win over Mumbai Indians, here on Tuesday. It was Royals' third consecutive win while Mumbai suffered their third defeat in a row. Chasing a challenging 165 to win, Royals romped home in 19.1 overs with Smith scoring an unbeaten 79 from 53 balls. He was well supported by Ajinkya Rahane (46) as they raised a 64-run stand for the second wicket. Smith shifted gears at will as he first relied on finding the gaps, running hard between the wicket, and when

needed, he found the boundaries effortlessly. He found the fence eight times and also smashed a six. Earlier, the decision to bat seemed to have backfired as Mumbai managed only 45 runs in the first 10 overs, but the fiery 104-run stand between Kieron Pollard (70) and Corey Anderson (50) changed the team's fortunes as they ended with a respectable 164 for five. Pollard's 70 came off just 34 balls as he punished the Royals bowlers with seven fours and five sixes while Anderson supported the Caribbean with a 38-ball 50. Royals were steady in their chase despite losing Sanju Samson (17) early.

There were no big shots, but under the charismatic leader Smith, Royals kept a decent run-rate. As has been Smith's style, he rotated strike quickly with ones and twos with Rahane finding the odd boundary in between from the other end. The strategy continued for some time, but Royals needed 80 runs from the last eight overs. The biggest plus was that they had nine wickets in hand. Rahane was dismissed by Shreyas Gopal as he tried to accelerate. In came young sensation Deepak Hooda and he started the fireworks straightaway by hitting two monstrous sixes off Gopal.

Champions League: Porto stun Bayern; RBI nod for different rates on Suarez stars in Barcelona win over PSG deposits with early withdrawal

T

Agency : MUMBAI he Reserve Bank to-

day allowed banks to offer differential interest rates on term deposits depending on whether they are with or without premature withdrawal facility. While all term deposits of individuals (held singly or jointly) of Rs 15 lakh and below should "necessarily" have premature withdrawal facility, RBI said for term deposits of more than Rs 15 lakh, banks can offer deposits without the option of premature withdrawal. In the sixth bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement of 2014-15 in February, RBI had decided to introduce early withdrawal facility in a term deposit as a distinguishing feature for offering differential rates of interest. "Accordingly, banks will have the discretion to offer differential interest rates based on whether the term deposits are with or without-premature-withdrawal-facility," the Re-

serve Bank said in a notification. However, banks that offer such term deposits should ensure that at the customer interface point, the customers are given the option to choose between term deposits either with or without premature withdrawal facility, RBI said. RBI also asked the banks to have a Board approved policy with regard to interest rates on deposits including deposits with differential rates of interest and to ensure that the interest rates offered are reasonable, consistent and transparent. Banks are allowed to offer differential rates of interest on term deposits on the basis of tenor for deposits less than Rs 1 crore and on the basis of quantum and tenor on term deposits of Rs 1 crore and above.

Two goals from Ricardo Quaresma in the first 10 minutes helped FC Porto to a surprise 3-1 win over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on Wednesday. Bayern, a five-time European champion but currently hit by injuries, paid for its defensive blunders as it struggled to dominate a Portuguese side which is unbeaten in the competition. Thiago Alcantara pulled one back for Bayern in the 28th minute, but Jackson Martinez restored Porto's two-goal advantage ahead of the return leg in Germany next week. "We are facing one of the strongest Bayern teams in history," said Porto's Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui, who is in his first Champions League campaign. "The hardest part will be in Munich." In the night's other quarterfinal, Barcelona won 3-1 at Paris SaintGermain. The game in northern Portugal got off to a dramatic start, with a penalty awarded to Porto in only the second

Agency : Pune Opener Mayank Aggarwal and Yuvraj Singh struck half centuries as Delhi Daredevils snapped their 11-match losing streak in the IPL cricket tournament by beating Kings XI Punjab by five minute after Xabi Alonso lost the ball and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer brought down Martinez. Quaresma converted the resulting penalty, and minutes later his pressure forced an error from central defender Dante — allowing the Portugal forward to slot past Neuer for 2-0. Bayern coach Pep Guardiola squatted on the sideline and scratched his head. As well as absences through injury, the Spaniard fielded players such as Alonso who were returning from layoffs. "We have players who were out a long time with injuries ... their legs don't last very long," Guardiola said. "It's a tough

result to take into the second leg, but we'll give it a go." His players fought to regain their composure and caught the Porto defense napping when Jerome Boateng's cross skimmed across the area for Thiago to score at the back post. However, Porto then produced relentless pressure against an opponent that was a finalist in two of the last three seasons but traveled to Portugal without star players Franck Ribery, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Arjen Robben. Martinez met a long pass and rounded Neuer in the 65th to give Porto a real chance of advancing next week.

Sania Mirza and the doubles debate Agency : New Delhi Sania Mirza's climb to world No. 1 in doubles has evoked mixed reactions. Some have bestowed upon it the status of a feat. To some, becoming world No. 1 in doubles is akin to a oneeyed man's coronation in the land of the blind. Critics of doubles make two arguments against it. One, singles stars rarely play. Two, it is not as demanding as singles. Take Mirza's case. Movement was never her strong suit. But in doubles she is successful

because she only has to cover half the court.Although it must be mentioned that the doubles court is 36 feet wide, nine more than singles. These are valid points. And what compounds matters is our sometimes farcical reactions to Indian wins in paired events. When Mirza won the junior girls doubles title at Wimbledon in 2003, commercials flatteringly referred to her as "Wimbledon champion". In a literal sense she was one, but a Wimbledon champ really is the singles winner.

ciation Stadium. Aggarwal, who was dropped on 42 by Sandeep Sharma of the bowling of Mitchell Johnson, hit seven fours and two sixes in his 48-ball knock while Yuvraj smashed five boundaries and three sixes in his 39-ball innings. Yuvraj showed glimpses of his old form with some exquisite shots as Delhi reached 169 for five in 19.5 overs. Both Aggarwal and Yuvraj were out in consecutive deliveries in the 19th over but by that time, Delhi needed just seven runs to win from 10 balls. Angelo Mathews knocked off the winning run -- a four -- of the bowling of Axar Patel. Wednesday's win was the first for Delhi in 12 matches over two seasons. They had lost their last nine matches of the previous edition last year before starting this season with two losses before Thursday's win.

Following an alert sounded by the Central Intelligence Bureau about possible terror attacks across the country, Gujarat police have beefed up security at all major establishments and also along the coastline. Minister of State for Home Rajnikant Patel said all the necessary steps were being taken to thwart terror attacks. “After the alert, we have beefed up the security at all the important places and asked the respective heads of police to increase vigilance in their areas. I also appeal to the people that they should remain alert and inform police if they learn about any suspicious activity or a person,” said Patel. The alert was sounded after Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi,

the mastermind of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks was released from a jail in Pakistan a few days ago. To stop possible entry of terrorists by the sea route, as in the case of Mumbai attacks, state coastal police have roped in local fishermen, apart from the Coast Guard and the Navy, for a roundthe-clock surveillance. “We have held meetings with local fishermen in all the coastal districts and asked them to inform the police if they notice anything suspicious,” said Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of coastal security S G Trivedi. He further added that all the superintendents of police of coastal areas, such as Porbandar and Jamnagar, have been asked to increase the vigilance.

Amdavadis shun sun, lose out big on sunshine vitamin Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

In hot and sunny Ahmedabad, this vital health statistic comes as a complete downer — 90% of 1,200 locals tested for a study 'Does vitamin D play a significant role in type 2 diabetes?' were found highly deficient in vitamin D — the sunshine vitamin. "Such widespread deficiency is alarming as vitamin D is a key metabolite for calcium absorption for bones. Low levels are linked with multiple disorders like muscle fatigue, bone pain, insulin resistance, dementia, obesity, certain cancers and even depression," says geneticist Dr Jayesh Sheth, principle investigator of the study, recently published in international journal BMC Endocrine Disorders. Normal levels of vitamin D are

above 25-30 nanograms while 90% were found to have less than 20 nanograms. Interestingly, the study junks any link between Vitamin D and sugar control in diabetics that comprised 50% subjects in the study. No association of vitamin D level and Hb1AC or three-month mean glucose levels were established in the study. "It is a widespread belief in world medical fraternity that good vitamin D levels help better glucose control. We found that people who had good sugar control followed a better lifestyle. This effectively means that popping vitamin D sachets would not help diabetes control; overall lifestyle management including exercising in sun and diet modification would be more useful," says Dr Sheth.
