NDA government lacks experience: Gehlot

Jaipur : Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot Tuesday slammed the Narendra Modi government for “highlighting” military actions like surgical strikes as its achievements and said this was due to lack of experience in the NDA dispensation. Gehlot said instead of being misled by Modi’s tall promises, people should remember “India became a superpower under former prime ministers Jawahar Lal Nehru and Indira Gandhi”. The NDA government lacks experience. They highlight surgical strikes. This never happened before. In the rule of former prime minister Indira Gandhi, Pakistan was divided into two (nations) but she never claimed it as her achievement and rather gave credit to the Army, Gehlot said at public rally in Bawdi area of Jodhpur’s Bhopalgarh town.

After Mayawati, Navjot Sidhu appeals to Muslims not to split their votes

Addressing a rally in Bihar’s Katihar Lok Sabha constituency, the Punjab minister said the BJP was running a divisive campaign and cautioned the Muslim voters against splitting their votes. Bihar : A day after the Election Commission barred BSP supremo Mayawati from campaigning for appealing directly to Muslim voters, Congress leader Navjot Sidhu on Tuesday spoke on similar line and asked the minority community members to stay united and vote together to defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Addressing a rally in Bihar’s Katihar Lok Sabha constituency, the Punjab minister said the BJP was running a divisive campaign and cautioned the Muslim voters against splitting their votes. Asserting that Muslims were the majority community in the region, Sidhu appealed to the community to stay united and vote to ensure victory for the Congress. The cricketer-turned-politician also alleged that the BJP was trying to divide the Muslim votes by getting parties like Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM to field candidates in Bihar. “Main aapko chetavni dene aya hun Muslim bhaiyon, ye baant rahe hain apko, ye

yahan Owaisi jaise logon ko la ke,ek nai party khadi kar aap logon ka vote baant ke jitna chahte hain. Agar tum log ikathe hue, ekjut hoke vote dala to Modi sulat jaega (There is politics of division on the basis of caste underway here. They are trying to divide your votes by getting Owaisi to field his party candidates. If Muslims unite and vote together then Modi will be defeated),” Sidhu said. The Congress leader’s remarks come close on the heels of the Election Commission barring Mayawati from campaigning for two days over a similar appeal to Muslim voters in Saharanpur and Bareilly districts during a joint rally of the BSP-SP alliance on April 7.

‘Hearing case due to Sabarimala’: SC notice on plea to let women in mosques

New Delhi : The Supreme Court has issued notices to the centre and others on a petition filed by a Maharashtra couple that wanted to let women offer prayers in mosques. While hearing the petition, the court said that it was hearing the plea only because of the Sabarimala verdict which had been quoted in the PIL. While hearing the PIL, the Supreme Court said that the bench was not satisfied with the response given by the petitioner’s counsel to a query on whether an individual can assert his or her right to equality against another individual. “We are only hearing you because of the Sabarimala judgement. But the provision for Right to Equality under the Constitution can only be invoked against the state and not against an individual who is inside a mosque,” the court said. The judges asked whether a mosque or temple or church is a state. “Can you invoke Article 14 and claim equality of treatment from another citizen. Can it be invoked against non-state actors? We can understand that state has to ensure equality. State cannot deny it,” the Court

observed. The petition filed by the Muslim couple referred to the top court’s September judgement on Sabarimala and said that Muslim women have the right to worship in mosques. The petition was filed by Yasmin Zuber Ahmad Peerzade and Zuber Ahmad Nazir Ahmad Peerzade, who said that there are no records stating that women were barred from entering mosques and offering prayers by the Holy Quran and Prophet Muhammad. The petition, filed under Article 32, quoted from the Sabarimala judgment saying, “religion cannot be used as cover to deny rights or worship to women and a prohibition on women to offer prayers is against human dignity.” “Prohibition on women is due to non-religious reasons and it’s a grim shadow of discrimination going on for centuries,” the petition reads further.

Shatrughan Sinha’s wife Poonam joins SP, to take on Rajnath Singh in Lucknow

Lucknow : Actor-turned-politician and Congress leader Shatrughan Sinha’s wife Poonam joined the Samajwadi Party on Tuesday in presence of Dimple Yadav. She will be fielded against Home Minister Rajnath Singh from the Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency. With Congress yet to field its candidate from the crucial constituency, the decks are cleared for a one-toone face-off between Rajnath Singh and Poonam Sinha. Congress leader Jitin Prasada, who was keen to contest from Lucknow, has opted for his constituency Dhaurhara. SP leader Ravidas Mehrotra said Poonam would file her nomination on April 18 from Lucknow, where voting will take place on May 6. He also appealed to the Congress not to field any candidate from the constituency. “Poonam Sinha ji (wife of Shatrughan Sinha) will

be the SP-BSP-RLD candidate from Lucknow. She will file nomination on April 18. We appeal to the Congress that do not field your candidate from here so that BJP can be defeated.” Poonam has been fielded from Lucknow keeping in mind the huge chunk of Kayastha and Sindhi voters.

Poonam is a Sindhi while her husband Shatrughan Sinha is a Kayastha. There are four lakh Kayastha voters and 1.3 lakh Sindhi voters in Lucknow, apart from 3.5 lakh Muslims. When asked whether she would be contesting against Singh, Poonam said, “Koi baat nahi, acchi tarah se ladenge (It does not matter. I will fight strongly).” In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Rajnath Singh had won the Lucknow seat, garnering 55.7 per cent of the total 10,06,483 votes polled. Rita Bahuguna Joshi, then with Congress, had come second. Rumours about Poonam taking an active plunge in politics had been going on for some time. “Poonam has been busy with social work for long. She is liked by all. People want her to contest but whether this will happen or not only time will tell,” Shatrughan had said last month.

Public policy shouldn’t be shaped in an ethical vacuum

Democratic traditions can take root in strange places and in the most peculiar of circumstances. Ask Sundar Pichai, chief executive officer (CEO) of Google, or Jamie Dimon, chairman and CEO of JP Morgan, whose open letter to shareholders highlights the pitfalls of unrestrained and irresponsible capitalism. Both Pichai’s and Dimon’s responses do send some broad messages to India Inc. as well as to Indian democracy, which is being tested through a lengthy election process to pick the next government. Google had set up an internal ethics committee, called Advanced Technology External Advisory Council (ATEAC), to advise the company’s management on the glide path for increasingly incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) across its suite of products and services. Google already uses AI across its various functions and sought advice from internal and external experts on the ethical implications of using it. The composition of the committee set off a flurry of protests, with more than 2,500 employees signing a petition protesting against the appointment of Kay Coles James, president of right-wing think tank The Heritage Foundation. The employees group at Google, who call themselves Googlers Against Transphobia and Hate, alleged that James had publicly spoken out against gay, trans and immigrant communities and that by selecting her Google was enunciating a version of “ethics” that valued proximity to power (James is said to be close to US President Donald Trump) over the well-being of society’s vulnerable sections. The protesters articulated the reason for their opposition rather succinctly: “From AI that doesn’t recognize trans people, doesn’t “hear” more feminine voices, and doesn’t “see” women of color, to AI used to enhance police surveillance, profile immigrants, and automate weapons—those who are most marginalized are most at risk. Not only are James’ views counter to Google’s stated values, but they are directly counter to the project of ensuring that the development and application of AI prioritizes justice over profit.” Interestingly, Pichai then disbanded the committee. The ethical issues involved in AI are indeed complex and perhaps, to give it the benefit of doubt, Google had not anticipated some of the slippery areas. About 10 months ago, Google was forced to revisit its AI technology policy after employees objected to the company’s contract with the Pentagon for AI in drone technology. Pivot to Jamie Dimon and his letter to shareholders. While reasserting that capitalism is perhaps the only system that works, Dimon also cautions against unbridled capitalism. But then he takes a sudden left turn. He advocates Europe’s model of social democracy, which is undergirded by a robust welfare system. He writes: “It’s essential to have a strong social safety net—and all countries should be striving for continuous improvement in regulations as well as social and welfare conditions…And that may very well mean taxing the wealthy more. If that happens, the wealthy should remember that if we improve our society and our economy, then they, in effect, are among the main winners.” The two examples hold out warnings, or lessons, especially for Indian companies and political parties which, empirically, have not been too fond of mixing business with ethics. The first is how to carefully consider the ethical plane while framing new policy. In recent times, demonetization has been an example of how the ethical implications were ignored in favour of some short-term political gains. The Congress, under the influence of influential businesses in western India, had implemented a freight equalization policy that significantly contributed to the de-industrialisation of eastern India, especially West Bengal. As new technologies, such as AI or Internet of Things, become more pervasive, policy will have to correspondingly incorporate an ethical outlook on how these impact society. In India, for example, AI’s effect on employment and human dignity will become critical. There are many unseen eth- Kapilkumar M. Hirpara ical dimensions to AI. Editor

Golf: Trump to award Tiger Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom

Washington : President Donald Trump on Monday said he would award Tiger Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom after the golfer won the Masters for the fifth time on Sunday. “Spoke to @ TigerWoods to congratulate him on the great victory he had in yesterday’s @TheMasters, & to inform him that because of his incredible Success & Comeback in Sports (Golf) and, more importantly, LIFE, I will be presenting him with the PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM,” Trump tweeted.

The victory on Sunday was one of the greatest comebacks in sports history, as the 43-yearold ended an 11-year major title drought having overcome personal and professional setbacks including a highlypublic divorce and multiple surgeries. The one-stroke win at Augusta National led to an outpouring of support from sports greats and politicians including Trump. Trump, an avid golfer, and Woods have played together in the past including in February when the pair joined golf great Jack

Nicklaus for a round at Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter, Florida. Trump appeared to follow the action at this year’s Masters closely, tweeting well-

on my fitness and have been constantly trying to improve my game, [and] on what will be better for my team,” Kings XI Punjab paceman Shami said in Mohali, ahead of their IPL-12 game against Rajasthan Royals. “Yes, I was a bit heavy after my injury and didn’t play ODIs for an extended time, but I have played ODIs recently. Especially in the last six months, there have been some outstanding changes in my life. I am happy with whatever I have achieved.

New Delhi : The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had pulled back the game nicely on Monday at the Wankhede stadium against the Mumbai Indians (MI). Their spinners were doing extremely well and had choked the runs. But a certain Hardik Pandya came and smashed an unbeaten 37 off just 16 deliveries to take his team home. With 25 needing in the final two overs, the all-rounder took on Pawan Negi to finish the game in the penultimate over itself. However, before that, the MI bowlers led by Lasith Malinga had done a fabulous job to restrict RCB to an under-par total of 171 runs. Malinga played a crucial role in it and returned with the figures of 4/31 in his four-over spell. His variations were tough for the batsmen to

to @TigerWoods, a truly Great Champion!” Trump tweeted shortly after Woods sank a short putt to secure his 15th major title. “Love people who are great under pressure. What a fantastic life comeback for a really great guy!” he added later. The medal is the highest civilian honour in the United States and is given annually to people who have made outstanding contributions to the security or national interests of the country, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavours.

New Delhi : One of India’s most prolific bowlers at the 2015 World Cup, Mohammed Shami is grateful to the Indian team coaches and those at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for helping him regain his mojo after he had missed playing ODI cricket for two years. Injury after the World Cup semi-final defeat against Australia forced him out, even as new, young fast bowlers emerged in the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. It was a period marked by weight gain and a struggle for rhythm. But, Shami has put those dark days behind him and is back in full flow ahead of the 2019 World Cup in England. “In the last 18 months, I have continuously worked

But the veteran, after the victory, looked at the bigger picture. He was delighted that Hardik Pandya’s blitz won Mumbai the game but with the World Cup coming up, Malinga is well aware that Sri Lanka could suffer a similar fate during the tournament. He admitted having scared to bowl at

Hardik during the World Cup while speaking to MI TV after the match. “How good for him (Hardik) and I am also very scared to bowl at him. If I play the World Cup against him, I will be really scared to bowl to him,” Malinga said. As far as the World Cup is concerned, India are scheduled to play Sri Lanka on July 6 at Headingley in Leeds. This will be the last league game for both the teams and the fates might have already settled by then for them.

SpiceJet Adds Five Bombardier Q400 Aircraft To Its Fleet SpiceJet has expanded its fleet of planes by inducting five 90-seater Q400 aircraft taking its Bombardier fleet size to 32.

New Delhi : SpiceJet said on Tuesday that it had inducted five 90-seater Q400 aircraft to its fleet, taking its Bombardier fleet size to 32. Three of these planes will join SpiceJet’s fleet in the next ten days while the remaining two will be inducted by June, the airline

said in a statement. SpiceJet had last week announced the induction of 16 Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft on dry lease, it noted. The 90-seater variant is part of SpiceJet’s second purchase order for up to 50 Q400 turboprops was placed in September 2017. This was the largest ever single order for the Q400 turboprop aircraft program valued at up to $1.7 billion. The airline has already inducted five planes as part of this order. SpiceJet also operates a 78-seater variant of the same aircraft. Besides the Q400 fleet, SpiceJet has a fleet of 48 Boeing 737s and one B737 freighter, the press

release added. “As part of our efforts to augment capacity and minimize passenger inconvenience, SpiceJet will induct five more Q400s in addition to the 16 B737s we announced last week. The

sudden reduction of aviation capacity should in no way hamper air connectivity to the smaller towns and cities of India and as the country’s largest regional operator, SpiceJet will make

all possible efforts in this direction,” said Ajay Singh, chairman and managing director of SpiceJet. The Indian aviation industry is facing turbulent times as Jet Airways has cancelled international operations till Thursday after it failed to pay pilots, lessors and employees. The company is saddled with a debt of $1.2 billion and has failed to secure interim funding from its lenders as part of the rescue deal signed last month. As of 12:04 pm, Jet Airways shares traded 5.74 per cent higher at Rs. 126.20, outperforming the Sensex which was up 0.86 per cent.

sources said Goyal, who had stepped down as chairman of the carrier last month, has withdrawn the bid for the airline. On April 12, sources

said that Goyal had also put in bid for the carrier. SBI Capital Markets has the mandate for Jet Airways’ sale on behalf of the SBI-led consortium of the domestic lenders to the debt-ridden private carrier. The management of Jet Airways will take a final call by end of the day on whether to continue operations as

the airline makes last ditch efforts to raise funds, sources said Tuesday. Sources at the airline said all options would be explored before deciding on its operations. As the crisis-hit airline’s board is meeting, reports said the carrier might be temporarily suspending its operations due to cash crunch.

ICC World Cup 2019: Khaleel Ahmed, Deepak Chahar among four net bowlers for India

Khaleel Ahmed, Deepak Chahar, Navdeep Saini and Avesh Khan have been selected as the net bowlers helping the Indian cricket team during the World Cup in the UK, the BCCI announced on Monday.

New Delhi : Khaleel Ahmed, Deepak Chahar, Navdeep Saini and Avesh Khan have been selected as the net bowlers helping the Indian cricket team during the World Cup in the UK, the BCCI announced on Monday. The All-India Senior Selection Committee met at the BCCI Headquarters in Mumbai on Monday to pick the Indian Cricket Team squad for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup, which will take place from 30th May to 14th July 2019 in England and Wales. Releasing a statement on the

four net bowlers, the BCCI said, “The players will assist the Indian team in its World Cup preparation.” All the four bowlers are currently featuring in the Indian Premier League season 12. While Deepak Chahar and Navdeep Saini feature for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Avesh Khan and Khaleel Ahmed play for Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively. Despite RCB’s terrible start to the campaign in IPL

2019, the bowlers Saini and Chahar have stoood out with the latter claiming 10 wickets so far. However, Avesh and Khaleel have only featured for just one match for their respective IPL teams. Virat Kohli will lead the men in blue in the World Cup with Rohit Sharma as his deputy. Selectors have put their faith in Vijay Shankar and Dinesh Karthik with Ambati Rayudu and Rishabh Pant the notable absentees.

Paris : Senior pro Shakib Al Hasan will be the vice-captain to Mashrafe Mortaza in Bangladesh’s 15-man squad, named on Tuesday by Chief selectors Minhajul Abedin and Habibul Bashar. Shakib had pulled out of the tour of New Zealand recently due to injury but was allowed to take part in the ongoing IPL where he has played one game for his franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad so far. Mortaza will be playing his fourth World Cup. The squad also features surprise picks in Mosaddek Hossain who along with his batting can chip in with his offbreaks and the uncapped Abu Jayed. Jayed, who has been a regular in the Test team for Bangladesh, is yet to get a look in in ODI cricket and has been picked over the injured Taskin Ahmed. Ahmed has faced a lot of trouble with regards to his fitness and injuries, which is possibly the reason for his exclusion from the

squad. He also doesn’t feature in the 17-member squad that has been picked for the tri-series against Ireland and West Indies before the World Cup. Liton Das, who can also double up as a wicketkeeper batsman, had a terrible tour of New Zealand and has been out of touch. Das, who averages 19.53 after 27 matches, has often given his side a problem at the top of the order, but the selectors

have shown faith in him over Imrul Kayes, who has already played at the World Cup. The middle order hasn’t seen much change with the likes of Soumya Sarkar and Sabbir Rahman holding onto their spots. Mohammad Mithun’s good form has helped force his way into the team along with Mohammad Saifuddin and Mehidy Hasan, all of whom are going to the World Cup for the first time.

strength, Polycab will trade at a premium with wire and cable peers (Finolex and KEI), but at a discount to FMEG companies (Havells, V-guard), said PhillipCapital (India) Pvt Ltd. “Over the next two years, return on capital employed (RoCE)/ return on equity (ROE) will be 23% and 15%,

respectively, and operating cash flow will be 1,060 crore. We expect earnings CAGR of 19% over FY19-21,” it said in a note on 15 April. Funds raised through the IPO and operating cash flow of 1,400 crore over FY19-21, will help the company to pay off debt in 2-3 years, PhillipCapital added.

“If Not Anand...”: Gujarat Congress Candidate’s Odd Prediction For Party Anand : Bharatsinh Solanki, the Congress’ Anand Lok Sabha candidate, is confident of wresting the seat from the BJP and claims it is his party’s safest bet in Gujarat. He said if the Congress cannot win Anand Lok Sabha seat, in central Gujarat, then it can’t win any of the 26 seats in the state. In the 2014 polls, the BJP had blanked out the Congress winning all 26 Lok Sabha seats. Anand, known as the milk capital of India and famous worldwide for the Amul dairy brand, is expected to see a close contest between Mr Solanki, two-time MP from here in 2004 and 2009, and the BJP’s Mitesh Patel, a well known businessman making his poll debut. The BJP, possibly sensing anti-incumbency,

dropped sitting MP Dilip Patel, who had defeated Mr Solanki, a former Union minister, riding the Narendra Modi wave. Anand has traditionally been a Congress stronghold, the party having won from here ten times, while the BJP managed to wrest it in 1989, 1999 and 2014. Among the ten Congress victories, five belong to Mr Solanki’s maternal grandfather Ishwar

Chavda between 1980 and 1998. While BJP’s Mitesh Patel claimed people here will vote in favour of BJP as they want to see Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister again, Mr Solanki said basic issues such as lack of employment and farm distress would ensure a Congress win. Though Mr Solanki, who had served as the state Congress president between 2015 and 2017, is upbeat, several voters of Dedarda village of Borsad taluka, from where Mr Solanki is registered as a voter, feel t h e B J P g o v e r n m e n t ’s developmental works and “pro-people” decisions cannot be overlooked. “The road passing from Dedarda is now a two-lane road. We have a school with classes till 10th standard.

Drought-hit Gujarat has water for factories, but no water for Kutch farmers

Farmers and activists say the state government is intentionally driving farmers and cattlerearers out of Kutch to make way for industries

Kutch : Bhavanbhai Patel stood facing his farm, as dry and cracked as his farming hands. The 65-year-old farmer lives in Dayapur village in Lakhpat taluka of southern Kutch, which has been receiving erratic rainfall since 2003. His farm comprises a few hectares of green, bright amid the sunburnt fields all around. “The rest belongs to my family, but now only I’m left here out of 10 brothers. Everyone else has gone,” he said. Lakhpat is one of 10

talukas in Kutch, the least populated taluka of India’s largest district spanning 45,674 sq km, covering 22% of Gujarat (196,024 sq km). Lakhpat residents keep leaving because, as Patel said, “there is no way to make a living here”. He said his was a basti (hamlet) of 20,000 that is now down to 1,500 people. “In places like Lakhpat, there is no

Spurned lover stabs young woman

Rajkot : A man allegedly stabbed his 20-year-old girlfriend when she spurned him at Raiya Telephone Exchange in Rajkot on Monday afternoon. The victim was identified as Anjali Parmar, a resident of Trilok Park on Sadhu Vasvani Road, and the accused as Ajay Goswami, a resident of Gondal Road Chowkdi. According to police, Parmar had broken up with Goswami three months ago. However, Goswami had been after Parmar, trying to persuade

her to return to him. Parmar refused to talk to him and didn’t answer his phone calls. “On the fateful day, when Parmar along with her elder sister Arti Vaghela was going to pick up Vaghela’s son from a playgroup, Goswami arrived and stabbed Parmar twice in her abdomen. Parmar has been rushed to Rajkot Civil Hospital where her condition is said to be serious,” said an official from Gandhigram police station, adding that a manhunt has been launched to nab Goswami.

water. Not even underground water is left that we could pull out and farm with,” said Patel, weary after working for six hours. Dayapur is 520 km from the Narmada Main Canal, but has not received any water from the canal in the 71 years since its foundation stone was laid, promising to bring the waters of the Narmada river to the parched

Fishermen released from Pak jail head to their homes in Gujarat

Vadodara : The Gujarat government has taken custody of the 100 fishermen released by Pakistan on Saturday as part of a goodwill gesture amidst strained ties between the two countries. The fishermen, most of them from Gujarat and Union Territory of Daman and Diu, would reach Vadodara on the night of April 17 and taken to their native places, a senior Fisheries department officer said on Tuesday. “The 100 fishermen were released (from Malir Jail in Karachi) on Saturday. They were handed over to the BSF at the Wagah border on Monday,” said NF Patel, Deputy Director, Fisheries Commissionerate, Gujarat. Among the 100 fishermen, 84 hailed from Gir Somnath district, six from Navsari, one from Bhavnagar and four from UT of Daman and Diu, he said, adding that the rest five fishermen belonged to West Bengal. The released fishermen are part of the second batch of 360 Indian prisoners Pakistan has promised to set free in four phases this month. Pakistan had released the first batch of 100 Indian fishermen on April 7. They had been arrested for fishing illegally in Pakistani waters. Another 100 will be freed on April 22

NRIs in Canada, Australia campaign for NaMo

Vadodara : Campaigning might still not be in full swing in Gujarat which will go to polls on April 23 but election fever has started gripping NRIs, especially NRGs settled in Canada and Australia. After organizing ‘Chai pe charcha’ at Scarborough, large number of IndoCanadians organized a car rally in support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday at Brampton, Ontario. The car rally that was organized by ‘NRI4NaMo’ team received overwhelming support despite low temperatures and heavy rains. “We had promoted the event on social media channels. The registrations were opened

three days in advance and we had 100% participation from all the Indo-Canadian community members,” said Nareshkumar Chavda, one of the organizers, having his roots in Surendranagar district of Gujarat. The rally that started at Ram Madhav temple on Dixie Road witnessed a line-up of cars which were decorated with ‘NRI4NaMo’ Canada banners, posters, Indian and Canadian flags while the air was filled with slogans of ‘Vande Mataram’, ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ slogans. “Over 130 cars and almost 300 community members participated in the rally that continued for almost 40 minutes before we

reached our final destination – Hanuman temple at Kenview drive,” said Chavda, who led

the rally along with another NRI Dhaval Vediya. “When we reached the temple, 100

Kutch, Saurashtra and North Gujarat regions of the state. Already facing years of drought, these regions have seen no rainfall so far in 2019. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded that Kutch saw a 99% departure from normal climate conditions, while other regions’ rainfall deficit is 100%. This is the third story in our series on drought that is affecting more than 40% of India’s land area. This story examines the situation in Gujarat’s worst-hit Kutch region, where scanty rainfall and rising temperatures have exacerbated competition for scarce water between farms on the one hand and cities and industries on the other, while raising questions over why the Narmada Valley Project’s raison d’etre--to irrigate farms in Kutch, Saurashtra and North Gujarat--remains unfulfilled 71 years on.

more community members were waiting inside the campus. As the turnout was higher than expected, entire temple was full of Modi and BJP supporters,” said Chavda, adding that the initiative was taken to motivate Indian voters to vote in favour of Modi and BJP. The Overseas Friends of BJP (OFBJP) Australia too organized a car rally ‘Drive 4 development’ at Melbourne’s Tarneit station car park on Saturday. Wearing t-shirts with Modi and BJP symbol, the riders shouted slogans ‘Phir Ek Baar Modi Sarkar’, ‘Kaho Dilse Modi Phir Se’ during the car rally that was promoted as ‘NRI4NaMo’ event.

and the rest on April 29. Both the countries frequently arrest fishermen as there is no clear demarcation of the maritime border in the Arabian Sea and these fishermen do not have boats equipped with the technology to know their precise location. Owing to the lengthy and slow bureaucratic and legal procedures, the fishermen usually remain in jail for several months and sometimes years. Tensions between both the countries escalated since Pulwama attack in the Valley in February this year and India’s retaliatory air strike on a terrorist training camp in Balakot.

BJP leader tells villagers that Narendra Modi has installed cameras in voting booths

Ramesh Katara said it will be clear who votes for the BJP’s candidate and who doesn’t.

Dahod : Gujarat Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ramesh Katara on Tuesday reportedly told villagers at a rally in Dahod constituency that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has installed cameras in polling booths and will know who votes for the Congress

Aged couple’s murder: Modi is the biggest liar as PM : Sidhu Acid supplier arrested Vadodara: A Bharuch man, who helped a 22-yearold man and his minor-aged girlfriend kill the latter’s foster parents in Manjalpur in 2014, was held from his home on Sunday. The accused Aryan alias Bhailu alias Shehzad Khokkhar used to supply acid to his friend Sapan Purani and his 16-year-old girlfriend for decomposing bodies of the girl’s parents Srihari Vinod (63) and Sneha (60). Khokkhar was held by Bharuch police and was handed over to Manjalpur police station on Monday. A local court remanded Khokkhar to police custody till April 17 for investigation. During interrogation, Khokkhar told police that he used to procure acid from a

roadside vendor. Cops said that his statement does not seem convincing so they will take him to the place from where he is claiming to have bought acid. Khokkhar also made revelations that the girl had given her mother’s ring and earrings to him suspecting that he may blackmail them later on. The ornaments are yet to be recovered from him. On Monday evening, Khokkhar was taken to the house in Tirupati Society at

Manjalpur where the couple was smothered and stabbed to death. “We want to reconstruct the crime scene and how he used to supply acid so we took him to the house,” said a police official. Purani and the girl, who was the adopted daughter of the couple, had killed them on August 3, 2014. But the murder had come to light only in October when the couple’s relative lodged a missing persons complaint with the police. Cops found the couple’s decomposed bodies in their house. Purani and the girl used pour acid on the bodies to decomposing it. The girl was sent to Women’s Remand Home while Purani was sentenced to life imprisonment in July 2016.

Ahmedabad : In a pointed attack on Narendra Modi in his home state, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu Tuesday said the land of Gujarat, which is the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, has also produced a prime minister who is the “biggest liar”. Addressing a rally in Dang district while canvassing for Congress’ Valsad Lok Sabha nominee Jitu Chaudhary, Sidhu said the prime minister works only for the wealthy people. “I am surprised because the very land (of Gujarat) which gave us Mahatma Gandhi has also produced a prime minister who is the biggest liar,” the Congress leader said. He also termed Modi as “Jhootha No.1’ and ‘Feku No.1”. Sidhu, who is a minister in the Congress government of Punjab, said Modi represents only

affluent people and not the poor. “Modiji, you are the PM of only one per cent wealthy people. You are not the PM of poor citizens. You are asking these locals to vacate their land and go

elsewhere. Almost 80 per cent of locals of this region are working as labourers in other states,” the Congress leader told the audience, most of them tribals. Sidhu said that Congress president

Rahul Gandhi would immediately grant a loan waiver for Gujarat farmers after coming to power. The former BJP leader also accused Modi of not keeping his promise of generating two crore jobs every year. “You promised two crore jobs every year (in the runup to 2014 elections). But, only 8 lakh people got jobs in your tenure. Though China’s GDP is 6 per cent, they gave jobs to 70 lakh people in five years. While India’s GDP is 8 per cent, we could create only 8 lakh jobs,” said Sidhu. He also claimed that even state-run HAL, BSNL and MTNL are retrenching their employees. “There is a backlog of 25 lakh posts in the government sector. I want to tell you that Rahul Gandhi will fill up these 25 lakh vacant posts,” he added.

in the Lok Sabha elections. “You’ll see the photo of Jaswant Sinh Bhabhor [BJP candidate from Dahod] and lotus symbol on the electronic voting machine,” a video showed Katara telling the audience at the rally. “Look for that and press the button. There should not be any room for error as Modi has installed cameras this time.” The BJP leader said those who do not vote will not get jobs. “It can be seen who votes for the Congress, for the BJP,” Katara claimed. “Aadhaar card and all cards have your photo now, if there are fewer votes from your booth then he will come to know who did not cast vote and then you will not get jobs.” This is not the first instance of BJP leaders threatening voters during the 2019 election campaign. On Monday, Union minister Maneka Gandhi told villagers in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit, where her son Varun Gandhi is the BJP candidate, that she will grade villages according to the number of votes the BJP receives and will prioritise development work accordingly.
