Agency : Shanghai India and China signed on Friday business deals worth $22 billion with Prime Minister Narendra Modi making a sharp pitch to Chinese investors to pump in money into the manufacturing sector and infrastructure projects across India. The 21 deals business-to-business deals covered a wide range of sectors including industrial parks, ports and financing. At the function in Shanghai, Indian software giant Infosys unveiled the master plan of its new Shanghai campus and ICICI Bank announced inauguration of its first bank branch in China. Officials said the figure of $22 billion included portions of the $20 billion of Chinese investment that was agreed during President Xi Jinping’s visit to India in September. “We are very keen to develop the sectors where China is strong. We need your involvement. The scope and potential, the breadth and length of infrastructure and related developments is very

huge in India,” Modi said during his address at the India-China Business Forum, titled: “Working towards a Sustainable Economic Partnership”. It remains to be seen how

much the new deals can help in reducing the deficit in Sino-India trade, which has been a sharp cause of concern for New Delhi. Earlier, Modi had a closed-door meet-

Presidential official Maj Zaw Htay told Associated Press on Saturday that Myanmar will decide whether to attend the May 29 meeting based on what is up for discussion. He said his country “will not accept the allegations by some that Myanmar is the source of the problem.” Maj Zaw Htay said that Myanmar “will not attend a regional meeting hosted by Thailand if “Rohingya’

Airtel launches 4G trials for existing customers in Mumbai

Sacked Delhi Police Constable, Who Hit Woman With Brick, Gets Bail

Agency : Mumbai Bharti Airtel has launched 4G trials for its existing customers in Mumbai with the intention of gathering customer feedback around the quality of its services. As part of this, Airtel customers across the city can now avail of a complimentary upgrade to Airtel 4G at 3G prices, the company said in a statement. “While launching Platinum 3G we significantly augmented our network and now have made fur-

ther investments in building a robust 4G network here,” said Ashok Ganapathy, Hub CEO – Mumbai, Maharashtra, Goa & Gujarat at Bharti Airtel. Earlier this week, Bharti Airtel started 4G trials in Chennai. In April 2012, Airtel had launched India’s first 4G service in Kolkata. The New Delhi-based company’s 4G services are now available across India including Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune, Chandigarh and Amritsar.

Agency : New Delhi A court in New Delhi today granted bail to a sacked Delhi Police head constable, who was caught on camera hitting a woman with a brick after allegedly demanding a bribe, saying there were counter versions of the incident and no evidence to substantiate the woman’s bribe charge. “There being two counter versions of the incident and there being no clear demand of bribe. I am of the opinion that the accused is entitled to bail. Hence, the bail is granted,” Special Judge Narottam Kaushal said. Earlier, on May 12, the court had remanded sacked head constable Satish Chand to 14 days in judicial custody. He was initially suspended on May 11 after the incident but later on dismissed from service

with immediate effect as the incident triggered widespread outrage. Mr Chand was arrested after a criminal case was filed against him when a video clip of his allegedly attacking a young woman with two children at Golf Links in Central Delhi area went

viral. The victim, who was riding a two-wheeler, had alleged that Mr Chand demanded a bribe of Rs. 200 accusing her of violating traffic rules and when she refused, he abused her and then hit her with a brick in front of her two minor children.

Long-term depression may double stroke risk

Long-term depression may double the risk of stroke for middle-aged adults, according to a new research. Scientists found that persistent depression may double the risk of stroke in adults over 50 - and stroke risk remains higher even after symptoms of depression go away. “Our findings suggest that depression may increase stroke risk over the long term,” said Paola Gilsanz, study lead author from Harvard University’s TH Chan School of Public Health in Boston. Researchers used data from 16,178 participants (ages 50 and older) who had been interviewed as part of the Health and Retirement Study about depressive symptoms, history of stroke, and stroke risk factors every two years in 1998-2010. The study documented 1,192 strokes over 12 years. Compared to people without depression at either interview, people with high depressive symptoms at two consecutive interviews were more than twice as likely to have a first stroke and people who had depressive symptoms at the first interview but not the second had a 66 per cent higher stroke risk. Researchers did not evaluate whether depressive symptoms diminished because of treatment or for other reasons; but findings suggest that treatment, even if effective for depression, may not have immediate benefits for stroke risk. Researchers also suggest that diminished depression may have a stronger effect on women than men. However, recent onset of depression was not associated with higher stroke risk. “Looking at how changes in depressive symptoms over time may be associated with strokes allowed us to see if the risk of stroke increases after elevated depressive symptoms start or if risk goes away when depressive symptoms do,” Gilsanz said. “We were surprised that changes in depressive symptoms seem to take more than two years to protect against or elevate stroke risk,” Gilsanz said. The team did not evaluate whether depressive symptoms diminished because of treatment or for other reasons; but findings suggest that treatment, even if effective for depression, may not have immediate benefits for stroke risk. Researchers also suggest that diminished depression may have a stronger effect on women than men. However, recent onset of depression was not associated with higher stroke risk. “Because this is the first study to take this approach, we need replication of findings in independent samples, with people of different age groups, and exploring different reasons that depressive symptoms get better,” said senior author Maria Glymour, ScD, MS, associate professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at UCSF, who worked on the research while at Harvard Chan School. “The surprising results make such replications even more urgent.” The research was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

‘Nirbaak’ review: Too much ambiguity spoils the film’s storyline

Agency : Mumbai The film opens with singer, filmmaker Anjan Dutta playing Samson Gomez, a hyper-narcissist who can’t have enough of himself. Gomez french kisses his own image the first thing in the morning, gets frazzled when he loses sight of himself for a minute and even masturbates to his own image. A loner by nature, he only seems to be mildly friendly with a girl in the park. The same girl

(Sushmita Sen) is also the object of affection of a tree in the park where she often visits. Sitting under it, on a bench, the girl spends numerous afternoons texting her boyfriend and even takes a nap. And the tree caresses her with its leaves, it’s cool, comforting shadows. The third story is a of a bitch in love with her master (Jisshu Sengupta), so much so that she can’t tolerate the presence of his better half.

Nadal crashes out of Italian Open as Federer and Djokovic reach semi-finals

Ahmedabad

SPORTS ROUNDUP

IPL - 8 : 2015

IPL KXIP vs CSK Live score: Kings XI lose three quick wickets, stumble at start Agency : Rome Rafael Nadal’s clay-court woes continued as he crashed out of the Italian Open with a straight-sets quarter-final defeat to Stanislas Wawrinka. The Spaniard wasted four set points in the opening tiebreaker before Wawrinka went on to win 7-6(7) 6-2. Nadal, a seven-time champion in Rome, has now suffered five defeats

on his favoured surface this season and heads to Roland Garros without a clay-court title for the first time since 2004. He has won the French Open nine of the past 10 years but dropped out of the top five in the ATP rankings for the first time since 2005 last week after losing the Madrid Open final to Andy Murray, falling to No.7. As a result, he is seeded

seventh for Paris - the lowest he has ever been. “I’m going to be ranked lower than ever playing Roland Garros, so that will mean the chance to play against very tough opponents,” Nadal told the ATP Tour’s official website. “At the same time, if I go to Roland Garros and I lose and I don’t play well, life continues. It’s not the end of the world.

Agency : Mumbai Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir on Friday stressed that performance in first class cricket should be the yardstick to judge young cricketers rather than the cash-rich and glamorous T20 event. “I feel if you really want to see a young talent, you should see him in first class cricket and your first class cricket should be given more importance than IPL,” said Gambhir at a promotional event of the IPL franchise. “People in India consider IPL bigger than first class cricket but I think the first class cricket of any country should be far more important than the IPL because in the T20 format it is very difficult to judge a

young batsman,” said the 33-year-old cricketer. “I am a strong believer that you should not be judging a young talent on a T20 format. It is going to be unfair because there are going to be times when there are not going to be enough opportunities for a young talent. however, he did praise IPL for improving young cricket-

ers’ temperament to play under pressure. “Obviously, IPL is a great opportunity. When you play at this stage and under this pressure you end up getting your temperament right. Your mental toughness can be tested in this tournament, but your actual technique can be tested only in first class cricket.

EPL Preview: Liverpool look to give Gerrard the perfect send-off

Agency : London Brendan Rodgers has called on Liverpool’s players to give Steven Gerrard the perfect Anfield farewell present with a victory against Crystal Palace on Saturday. Emotions will be running high when Gerrard makes his final appearance in a Liverpool shirt on home turf before joining LA Galaxy in the close-season and Reds boss Rodgers would dearly love to send the club captain off to California with one last memorable Anfield moment. The

34-year-old midfielder is already well established as a Liverpool legend after 17 seasons with the team he supported as a boy, but Rodgers hopes there is still room in his storybook career for a fairytale departure in the style of Ian Rush, another Anfield icon who scored a late winner against Watford in his final home appearance before joining Juventus in 1987. “In terms of trying to control emotion it has been very simple. The attitude of all the players has been

first class, Steven in particular,” Rodgers said. “We are concentrating on winning the game as I am sure Steven will want to go out with a win. The players are not on holiday at all,” “Steven doesn’t like the focus and attention but it is brought on because of his star quality.” Rodgers said. Elsewhere on Saturday, several clubs will be looking to avoid joining already-relegated Burnley and Queens Park Rangers in English football’s second-tier next term.

Agency : Mohali The tie on Saturday between the Chennai Super Kings, who are assured of a place in the playoffs, and Kings XI Punjab, who are languishing at the bottom, has little riding on it. Going into their last league match, a win for CSK will help them finish in top two and thus give them two chances of making it to the final. Punjab, on the other hand, will look to spoil CSK plans. CSK coach Stephen Fleming assured that his team would go all

out for a win. “I think this makes Punjab even more dangerous as they have nothing to lose. Maybe, we can also adopt a similar attitude for this match,” said Fleming. Despite the blip against Delhi Daredevils in their last game, where the team surrendered meekly, the Super Kings have been the most consistent performers in this league. The main concern for CSK will be the departure of Brendon McCullum, who has been in excellent form through-

out the league stage. Saturday’s game will be the last for the New Zealand skipper before he heads to England for a two Test and five ODI series. His century against Sunrisers Hyderabad, SRH, and a couple of fifties at the top had helped CSK get off to flying starts. He is also the highest run-getter for the side with 430 runs in 13 matches. CSK have been the most settled unit, which provides yet another contrast between the two sides.

Agency : Mumbai After pulling of a thrilling win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in their previous game, an upbeat Royal Challengers Bangalore would look to seal a playoff berth by beating laggards Delhi Daredevils in their last league match of the IPL cricket tournament here tomorrow. RCB have been inconsistent in the tournament but the Virat Kohli-led side are very much in contention for a play-off berth. They are in second spot in the league table with 15 points from 13 games, behind Chennai Super Kings (16 points from 13 matches). The home side would not want to depend on the complex permutations and combinations

and would simply look to beat the Delhi side tomorrow at the Chinnaswamy Stadium to qualify for the play—off stage. Delhi, on the other hand, are already out of reckoning with just 10 points from 13 games and they will play for pride only. RCB’s batting trio of captain Virat Kohli, A B De Villiers and Chris Gayle have been among the

runs and that aspect makes them the favourites to win tomorrow’s match. Gayle’s 35 and Kohli’s unbeaten 44 were instrumental in RCB snatching a thrilling six— wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad with a ball to spare under Duckworth/ Lewis method last night after the target was revised to 81 off six overs in the 11—over—a side match.

Agency : Mohali After an incredible start to the season during which they won five matches in a row, Rajasthan Royals lost a bit of momentum but Shane Watson is backing his boys to go all the way to the final. The reason for Watson’s belief is the number of quality all-rounders in the Royals’ set-up. He also feels that despite losing a few matches in the middle of the tournament, the inaugural IPL champions have it in them to reach the final. “We were pretty consistent in the first five games and then we lost

to Kings XI Punjab in the super over. We also lost a bit of momentum with another loss to Bangalore and a couple of washouts. We have learnt from our mis-

takes through that period and now, we have started to move back up and have been performing well, hopefully leading us to the final,” Watson.

Security, privacy to become challenges for smart cities

Sunvilla News, Gandhinagar

Security and privacy will be one of the biggest challenges that the builders of country’s first smart city in Gujarat — The Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFTCity) — have to deal with as they go about adding technological aides and devices in the 800-odd acre campus in Gandhinagar. “When we are building a smart city, we are not talking of putting up smart machines, but we are looking at making humans smart,” said Pankaj Kumar Gupta, senior vice-president, ICT & ITeS Managed Services of IL&FS while addressing an international con-

ference TENSYMP 2015 at the GIFT-City premises on Friday. “Technology will be a means to a smart living. We will have smart security, landscaping, transportation, parking and workforce,” said Kumar whose company is equal partner in the GIFTCity project. However, there were other experts at the meet who expressed concern about “smart-

ness” of the technology and raised questions about the increased surveillance redefining privacy. “Security and Privacy will be biggest challenges of smart cities. This is a debatable issue,” said Srikant Chandrasekaran, Standards Senior Manager of IEEE, a New York-based global professional association for the advancement of technology.

Form income panel to protect livelihood of farmers: Analyst Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

A prominent agriculture analyst has proposed setting up of income commission at national and state levels for farmers, which will guarantee them specific monthly income against the backdrop of agrarian crisis. “An income commission should be formed for farmers, under which they would be entitled to get a minimum monthly income on the basis of their production and the area under cultivation,” said Devinder Sharma.

He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a seminar wherein organic farming policy of Gujarat Government was unveiled. “If a peon earns Rs 15,000 (per month) and a farmer Rs 3,000 then there is a need to think about our farmers,” he said. Stressing that Minimum Support Price (MSP) policy has lost its utility, Sharma said it was high-time to introduce a income policy for farmers wherein they should be given an assured income each month.

Gosabara wetland is formed by Karli Recharge Reservoir and Karli Tidal Regulator. The reservoir is under control of the state irrigation department and therefore local forest officers have limited pow-

ers to exercise in this important destination of migratory birds. The wetland is a hot-spot of local and international migratory birds which land there during winter. Threatened species like Dalmatian pelican, white-eyed pochard, peregrine falcon and greater spotted eagles were recorded at this scenic wetland during a bird census undertaken by state forest department in year 2014. European bee-eaters, which are rarely sighted in Gujarat, were also spotted in Gosabara. The census estimated presence of 1.92 lakh birds of 112 species in the wetland.
