The research, published on Tuesday in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, found that rhinovirus, the common respiratory virus, jumpstarts the activity of interferon-stimulated genes. These genes trigger earlyresponse molecules in the immune system which can stop reproduction of the SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, within airway tissues infected with the cold, the researchers said.

data of two vaccines. PfizerBioNTech’s mRNA vaccine was found 96% effective in preventing hospitalisation after two doses. The OxfordAstraZeneca vaccine was found 92% effective after two doses. The Indian version of this vaccine, Covishield from Serum Institute, is among the vaccines being administered in the country. Researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London and Guys, and St Thomas’s Hospital NHS Trust, London, linked all symptomatic Covid-19

cases between April 12 and June 4 to the Emergency Care Dataset (ECDS) which records all admission via emergency departments in England. The analysis included 14,019 cases of the Delta variant – 166 of whom were hospitalised. The analysis showed that the vaccines’ effectiveness in preventing hospitalisation with Delta was similar to that seen with Alpha — (94%) after the first dose and 96% after the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine; and 71% after the first dose and 92% after the second dose.

was attacked by six people -Hindus and Muslims – who were upset over amulets he had sold them, according to the police. The attackers had accused the man of selling fake talismans. The police FIR charges Twitter, several journalists and Congress leaders for inciting “communal sentiments” with posts sharing

the man’s allegations. Tweets were shared with a clear motive to “provoke communal sentiments”, says the FIR, and adds that the “misleading” posts were re-tweeted by thousands. The police also say they had shared a press release on the night of June 14 on Twitter giving details and refuting the communal angle but despite the clarification, the tweets were not deleted and Twitter did not act to have the tweets removed. Union IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, in a series of posts on Twitter as well as its Indian rival Koo, gave a detailed explanation of the move against Twitter. He said Twitter was given “multiple opportunities to comply” but it deliberately chose non-compliance.

The Union government today informed the Bombay High Court that antifungal drugs for treating Mucormycosis or Black Fungus had been allocated to states on a need-based system and there was no discrimination against any state, including Maharashtra. Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Anil Singh told the court that the Centre had been supplying anti-fungal drugs

to Maharashtra on a regular basis. While Amphotericin B, the drug used for treating Mucormycosis, was in short supply, the Union government had been trying its best to meet the demands raised by all state governments, he said. “Nobody can dispute we are allocating as per drug availability in the country and the demands raised by states,” ASG Singh said. “We (Union of India) are leaving no stone unturned to see that the drug is available in adequate quantity. A task force is constituted, the SC is also monitoring. We have granted license to six pharma companies to import the latest and most effective variant of Amphotericin B from a United States-based company,” he said. Mr Singh was responding to a previous query raised by the High Court on whether the Centre’s allocation of anti-Mucormycosis drugs to Maharashtra and other states was based on a system of “equitable distribution”. The court was hearing a bunch of public interest litigations (PILs) on the management of resources.

Twitter Loses Legal Shield, Charged With “Provoking Communal Sentiments” Agency News: New Delhi Twitter has lost its legal protection in India from prosecution over users’ posts because of its failure to comply with new digital rules, government sources said today as a case was filed in Uttar Pradesh against the social media giant over tweets that the police say attempted to incite communal trouble. Twitter has not yet complied with all the provisions of the rules that came into force on May 25, sources in the Ministry of Electronics and IT said. “Due to their noncompliance their protection as an intermediary is gone. Twitter can face liability for violating any Indian law just as any publisher is,”

Twitter has refused to comment on it.The first case in which Twitter can face charges for third party content was filed last night in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad, in connection with an alleged assault on an elderly Muslim man on June 5. Amid New Angst Over BS Yediyurappa, BJP Sets Up Talks

Editorial

SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Chirag Paswan May Be Getting Ready To Start A New Political Innings Revolt has much wider connotation and it has got an ideological implication. Actually the five Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) members of parliament severing their relationship with the party and later replacing Chirag Paswan as the party president by Pashupati Paras the younger brother of Ram Vilas Paswan, is more like a family opera. Chirag being the heir of Ram Vilas and enjoying the trust of the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, managed to have his grip on the party. But the brothers of Ram Vilas nursed insolence personally towards him and his leadership. Even the rank and file and the junior level leaders nurtured the view that Dalits and especially the Musahars would not identify themselves with him and accept him as their leader. After Ram Vilas’s death Chirag distanced himself from Nitish Kumar but continued to show his compete loyalty and obeisance to Modi but this did not help his party to win more than one seat in the assembly elections. The Dalits and extremely backwards had shifted their loyalty and support. Paras has been quite close to Nitish and once he was also inducted in the cabinet. In fact the love and hate relationship between Nitish and Ram Vilas had been a major factor in both the leaders not coming closer to each other. After the death of Ram Vilas, these five MPs would come out of the wings of Chirag, assert their independent stature and join hands with Nitish has been an open secret. There were two reasons; first, Modi would not encouragethis nature of defection and also the state BJP leadership has been quite hostile to theseMPs.How far this incident will succeed in creating a churning in state politics is not yet clear, butone thing is certain that this would enhance the bargaining power of Nitish. The fact of thematter is Nitish has lost his administrative credibility in the eyes of the RSS and BJPleadership. The recent revolt against him by Jitan Ram Majhi and Nishad has weakened hisposition. Both these leaders have beenin touch with the RJD chief Lalu Prasad. But the mostsad commentary is Nitish is finding it hard to initiate the operation to salvage the situation. Inthe existing situation the task to protect the government has been undertaken by the BJP.Some close aides of Nitish try to project the shift of the loyalty of the five LJP MPs as a signto his having a firm grip on the administration. But the fact is otherwise. He intends to send amessage to Modi that he is still the undisputed leader of backwards and Dalits. But thispostulate is being rejected by the senior BJP leaders. They argue that since the five MPscould not assert their authority by remainings a separate group, they may join the JD(U). Atleast their voice will be recognised as the members of the JD(U).This split in the LJP has completely eroded the façade of its being the party of Dalits. Noneof the five MPs could claim to have their own independent support base. They were not more than parasites. They completely relied on the weatherman art of Ram Vilas Paswan. Though he used to claim himself as the dalit leader his political tradition was different fromthe Ambedkar’s philosophy that has become the defining idiom of Dalit politics in recenttimes. He managed to acquire a political recognition by supporting the political line of VishwanathPratap Singh on Mandal. He had come to realise than any political line espousing the causeof Dalits only would not succeed in the Indian context. That was the reason that whileclaiming to be a dalit leader, he shared the platform with leaders like Lalu Yadav, SharadYadav and others and practiced the politics of social justice. As social welfare minister in theVP Singh government, he was responsible for the implementation of the MandalCommission report. But unfortunately the Singh government did not provide muchopportunity for him to grow. Mandal limited his growth in national politics. Paswan eventuallyleft the Janata Dal and formed the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) in 2000, which, however, failedto expand beyond his Dusadh caste. It is a paradox that Paras had joined hands with Nitish, who for weakening the political gripof Ram Vilas on the Dalits had split the Dalits into two groups; Dalits and mahadalits. Though it is something else that this split did not bail out Nitish and the mahadalits stillcontinue to lurch. It is worth mentioning that he never had a good relation with BSP chief Mayawati who has been unwilling to accept him as the dalit leader. The dislike for one another was quite perceptible. While Ram Vilas claimed that he was thedalit leader and Narendra Modi was the leader of the backwards, he would asset “Youcannot compare Narendra Modi to Nitish Kumar. One is on the top and the other is at thebottom. He (Kumar) is - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara trying to show off.

Delhi govt to train community nursing assistants to tackle next wave of Covid Those who are 18 years and above and have graduated from Class 12 will be eligible to apply and online applications will open from Thursday (June 17) Agency News: New Delhi To prepare for a potential third wave of Covid-19, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said the Delhi government will build a force of 5,000 “community nursing assistants” in the national Capital. Those who are 18 years and above and have graduated

from Class 12 will be eligible to apply and online applications will open from Thursday (June 17). The selected assistants will be trained by IP University and their role will be to assist doctors and nurses when requisitioned for their service during the next wave of Covid-19. They will be trained in paramedics, life care, home care, first aid, administering

injections including vaccines and sample collection, setting up oxygen concentrators and cylinders, checking basic vitals of patients and other patient care activities.“The advent of the third wave of Covid-19 has already begun in the United Kingdom. Preparations for the potential wave are on in full swing in the Delhi government. In the

first and second waves in the country, we noticed that the huge surge in Covid-19 cases led to a severe shortage of medical and paramedical staff. Keeping that in mind, the Delhi government has made an ambitious plan to recruit and train 5,000 health assistants, who are technically called community nursing assistants,” said Kejriwal during a digital press briefing on Wednesday. He said recruitment will be on firstcome-first-serve basis. “These 5,000 nursing assistants will be given 2 weeks’ training each in batches of 500. Indraprastha University will impart the training in Delhi government’s nine major hospitals. These trained recruits will assist doctors and nurses, but they will not have the power to take any decision in patient treatment or anything related,” Kejriwal said.

The ministry further explained that the vero cells, after the growth, are washed with water and chemicals, also technically known as buffer, several times to make it free from the newborn calf serum. “Thereafter, these vero cells are infected with corona virus for viral growth,’ it said.“The vero cells are completely destroyed in the process of viral growth. Thereafter this grown virus is also killed (inactivated) and purified. This killed virus is then used to make the final vaccine, and in the final vaccine formulation no calf serum is used. Hence, the final vaccine (COVAXIN) does not contain newborn calf serum at all and the calf serum is not an ingredient of the final vaccine product,” the ministry said.

Terrorism and radicalisation are the “gravest threats” to peace and security in the world and a collective approach is required to combat the challenges, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said today. In a virtual address at the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ MeetingPlus (ADMM-Plus), Mr

Singh also highlighted India’s concerns over maritime security challenges while noting that developments in the South China Sea attracted attention in the region and beyond, an oblique reference to China’s aggressive behaviour in the critical waterways. The Defence Minister called for ensuring a free, open and inclusive order in the Indo-Pacific based

on respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations, peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue and adherence to international rules and laws.Delving into the coronavirus crisis, Rajnath Singh said India is just emerging from a second wave of the infection that pushed the country’s medical response to the “limit” and called for a

concerted global approach like making available patent-free vaccines, unhindered supply chains and ensuring greater medical capacities to defeat the pandemic.Referring to the threat of terror networks.

Mithun Chakraborty Questioned By Kolkata Police Over Election Speech Agency News: New Delhi Actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty was questioned by the police in Bengal today in a controversy over one of his speeches during the Bengal election campaign. The 71-year-old actor, who was among the BJP’s star campaigners in the April-May election, was questioned virtually by the Kolkata Police in connection with a case filed against him

over a speech he made on March 7 after joining the party. A First Information Report (FIR) alleges that the speech played a role in inciting post-

poll violence in Bengal after the May 2 verdict that gave Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress a landslide victory. Mithun Chakraborty had gone

to the Calcutta High Court to get the FIR cancelled. The court had then directed an investigation officer to question the actor virtually. The actor has pleaded that he had only recited film dialogues in his speech and these were not meant to be literal. The police case involves a line from his 2006 film “MLA Fatakeshto”: “Marbo ekhaney...lash porbay shoshaney (‘i will thrash you here. Your body will be found at the crematorium.”

‘Need to be fair to him’: Tendulkar weighs in on Ollie Robinson issue Robinson led England’s attack with 4-75 in the first innings at Lord’s and followed up with 3-26 in the second while in between making a useful 42 with the bat. Agency News: Mumbai Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar said Tuesday England should allow Ollie Robinson to start playing again, after the fast bowler apologised following his suspension for historic racist and sexist tweets.Robinson, 27, was suspended from the England team after the posts resurfaced earlier this month when he made his Test debut against New Zealand. He impressed with both bat and ball in the drawn game,

but was then barred from international duty pending the outcome of an investigation by the England and Wales Cricket board.“We need to understand that he did that many, many years ago and he is sorry about it,” Tendulkar told AFP.They left him out in the second Test in spite of doing well and he realises what he had done... he apologised and also said that this won’t happen again,” he said. We need to be fair to him and at some stage he should start playing,” he added. Robinson led England’s attack

with 4-75 in the first innings at Lord’s and followed up with 3-26 in the second while in between making a useful 42 with the bat.But he found himself making an apology after stumps on day one of the opening Test for tweets that included comments suggesting Muslim people were linked to terrorism and derogatory

remarks about women and people of Asian heritage. He took a short break and skipped two opening games last week for his county side Sussex to be with his family.Sussex have said Robinson “is a very different man from the one that wrote those tweets”, and Tendulkar said he could not agree more.

Copa America registers another 11 positive Covid-19 tests Agency News: Brasilia The number of Covid-19 cases recorded among people involved in the Copa America rose to 52 on Tuesday, an increase of 11 on two days previously, Brazil’s Health Ministry said. Two of the new cases were players or officials embedded with the competing teams, the ministry said. It did not reveal any more details or say which of the 10 competing South America nations were affected. In total 33 players or officials from Venezuela, Colombia and Bolivia have tested positive since Sunday, the day the soccer tournament kicked off in four Brazilian cities. Another 19 were employees working at hotels in Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro where the delegations are staying.

‘He can get as many as 3 hundreds in this five-Test series’: Sunil Gavaskar makes huge prediction about India batsman India’s batsmen will be in for a stiff challenge but Sunil Gavaskar has backed one of their premier players to have a rollicking series in England. Agency News: Mumbai India’s batsmen will be in for a stiff challenge when they take on England in a fiveTest series starting in August. India, who will have almost a six-week gap after the World Test Championship final, have in the past, been let down by their batting, which has been

one of the reasons behind their series defeats in England in the last three tours – 2011, 2014 and 2018. And although, the last time around, Virat Kohli stood out with almost 600 runs, along with some support from Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, it wasn’t enough India to prevent a 1-4 loss. With India packing a solid batting

order this time around, great things would be expected from them, especially since this will be the third tour of the country for a lot of the senior members

of the team. One of them is Rohit Sharma, who has turned a new leaf since his promotion as opener in Test cricket, and he has been backed by none

other than the legendary Sunil Gavaskar to have a series to remember this summer. In his case, it’s always the first twothree overs. Those are the overs where his front foot is not quite getting to the pitch of the ball. But a couple of overs down the road, once his front foot starts reaching the pitch of the ball, then he is very good,” Gavaskar said on The Cricket Analyst podcast. Even in Australia, he didn’t score too many runs but the time he had to play their fast bowlers was amazing. These guys were bowling at 90 miles an hour but he actually.

The Union Cabinet is set to take up a proposal to permit 100 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) in state-owned oil refiners to clear the regulatory path for the privatisation of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), according to government officials. The move, initially proposed by the Petroleum Ministry, will be placed before the Cabinet by the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade

(DPIIT). The divestment of the Centre’s 53 per cent stake in BPCL is a key part of the former’s disinvestment target of Rs 1.75 lakh crore for FY22.“If you are asking foreign players to bid, then it is natural to permit 100 per cent FDI,” said a government official. Once cleared, the proposal will no longer require a successful foreign bidder for BPCL to seek approval from the government. There are currently three players vying for BPCL, including Anil Aggarwal’s Vedanta group,

and private equity firms Apollo Global, and I Squared Capital’s arm Think Gas. Current FDI regulations only permit 49 per cent FDI in public sector petroleum refiners. The official noted that while current regulations permit 100 per cent FDI in private sector refining, a clarification would be required since BPCL is also a retailer.
