Steep rise in Covid-19 cases; India records 12,213 new cases in 24 hours Agency News:New Delhi The country witnessed a steep increase in Covid-19 cases on Wednesday. In 24 hours ending Thursday morning, a total of 12,213 persons tested positive for the infection, according to the Union Health Ministry. Eleven patients succumbed to the infection during this period. The daily positivity rate was 2.35 per cent, while the weekly positivity rate was 2.38 per cent. Around 5.19 lakh samples were tested for Covid-19 across the country on Wednesday, taking the cumulative testing figure to 85.63 crore.98.65% recoveryA total of 7,624 patients recovered from Covid in last 24 hours. The cumulative recovery is more than 4.26 crore, or 98.65 per cent of the cases recorded till now.The active caseload has risen to 58,215, accounting for 0.13 per cent of the cases recorded till now.15.21 lakh vaccinatedAround 15.21 lakh individuals received the Covid-19 vaccine in last 24 hours. India’s exports expand 24% in May, trade deficit widens sharply Agency News:New Delhi India’s total exports, including goods and services, in May grew 24% over a year ago to $62.21 billion, but trade deficit also rose sharply to $15.44 billion in the month compared to a $1.38 billion trade surplus in the same month last year on the back of a 59% spike in imports to $77.65 billion, according to official data.According to experts, the high trade deficit in May was on account of higher merchandise imports in terms of value due to global supply chain disruptions, inflation and domestic manufacturers building inventories to secure
themselves from future supply shocks.Provisional data released by the commerce ministry on Wednesday showed unprecedented growth in imports of key inputs such as energy and precious metals, necessary for domestic manufacturing and exports. Gold import in May saw 789% year-on-year growth to $6 billion, coal (173% to $5.42 billion), petroleum (103% to $19.2 billion), and silver (2,800% to $446 million). Higher services exports at $45.87 billion in May compared to $28.48 billion imports helped bring down the overall trade deficit, which also signified.

Agency News:New Delhi Air travel is expected to get expensive amid a sharp rise in jet fuel price and depreciation of the rupee, which has also led to an increase in operating costs of already Covid-19 ravaged airlines, prompting SpiceJet to issue a warning on Thursday. A minimum 10-15 per cent increase in flight fares is to be expected, the airline further
said, adding they have been left with no choice but raise fares “immediately”. A minimum 1015 per cent increase in air fares is required to ensure that cost of operations are better sustained, news agency PTI quoted Ajay Singh, chairman and managing director, SpiceJet, as saying. He reasoned that aviation turbine fuel (ATF) has risen by over 120 per cent, which he said, was not “sustainable”. He also urged the centre and state governments to intervene and provide tax relief on ATF. Oil marketing companies have hiked ATF by 16.3 per, with the fuel now costing an all-time high of ₹1.41 lakh per kilo litre in Delhi.
