Actor Shahid Kapoor has laughed off reports about wife Mira’s acting debut. “No. She is chilling with her family right now,” said the “Haider” star, when asked if there is any truth to the speculation. The actor, who will be next seen in Vikas Bahl’s “Shaaandaar”, has lately been quite open about his personal life, a departure from the secrecy he maintained before marriage.

The CBI today recovered Rs 20 crore in cash during searches at 13 locations against two former Northern Railways officials and seven private firms in connection with alleged corruption in supply of packaged drinking water other than mandatory ‘Rail Neer’ in premium trains. CBI sources said a case has been registered against the then Chief Commercial Managers (PS and Catering) of Northern Railways M S Chalia and Sandeep Silas. The agency has also booked private companies RK Associates Pvt Ltd, Satyam Caterers Pvt Ltd, Ambuj Hotel and Real Estate, PK Associates Pvt Ltd, Sunsine Pvt Ltd, Brandavan Food Product and Food World under Prevention of Corruption Act provisions. Silas has served as the private secretary of a former Union Minister. The sources claimed cash recovery of Rs 20 crore was made from the residence of Shyam Bihari Agrawal, his sons Abhishek Agrawal and Rahul Agarwal who own RK Associates and Brandavan Food Product. It is

alleged that the accused had shown favour to these private firms in supply of cheap packaged drinking water (PDW) other than mandatory ‘Rail Neer’ in

premium trains including Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express. CBI spokesperson Devpreet Singh said it was further alleged that the Railway Board had

prescribed that IRCTC shall provide Rail Neer at a rate of Rs 10.50 (approx) per bottle to the private caterers and the private caterers will be paid Rs 15 (approx) per bottle for supplying the same to passengers in premium trains. However, the private suppliers in order to obtain undue gain, were allegedly supplying cheap packaged water, other than “Rail Neer”, available in the market

8 killed in cylinder blast at Mumbai hotel Agency | Mumbai

Eight persons died after a fire broke out at a restaurant in Kurla on Friday afternoon. The restaurant ‘Hotel City Kinara’, a Chinese food joint, is located some distance away from the Kurla railway station. DCP Mahesh Patil said, “Today at Kurla about 13:00 hrs, fire broke out in Hotel City Kinara, in front of Holy Cross Church.” He added,” 8 people are dead and bodies sent to Rajawadi Hospital. Fire engines are on the spot and inquiry is in progress.” An officer said that prima facie it appears

to be a case of short circuit that led to the incident. Police said only 1 person among the 8 dead have been identified. The bodies of seven men and one woman, who were seated in the family room of the restaurant on the first floor, were found, officials added. “We suspect there was a gas leak

on the first floor along with a short circuit that led to a blast. Those on the first floor got trapped over there and could not rush down where there was no damage,” said ACP Srirang Nadgouda. “We suspect there were one or two waiters and rest of them customers who lost their lives.”

at a rate of Rs 5.70 to 7.00 (approx) per bottle, thereby causing gain to themselves and loss to the exchequer, the official said. “The accused public servants allegedly did not take any action against the private parties providing catering services in the premium trains despite repeated

requests of IRCTC for non-picking of allotted quota of ‘Rail Neer’ by Private Caterers,” the spokesperson said. CBI said directions of Railway Board to ensure supply of “Rail Neer” in premium trains were also ignored by the officials thereby causing undue pecuniary advantage to

the private parties and corresponding loss to IRCTC. “Searches are being conducted today at 13 places in Delhi and Noida which led to recovery of cash amount of more than Rs 20 crore(approx) and a large number of incriminating documents,” the spokesperson said.

Closing of the Muslim mind is a global development

A Hindu mob in Dadri, just outside Delhi, broke into 50-year-old Mohammad Akhlaq’s home last month, accused him of eating and storing beef before beating him to death. This year, Bangladeshis have been killing secular bloggers “for offering insult to Islam”, before escalating to killing foreigners and flagging the presence of the Islamic State in the country — a Japanese and an Italian were sacrificed so that “hardliners who have been shut out of the political mainstream”, according to experts, could be appeased. Australia cancelled its cricket tour to signal what the world thinks of Bangladesh now. Pakistan is already a cricket pariah because of terrorism. Pakistan has been punished. Its Islamisation under General Zia-ul-Haq’s martial law in the 1970-’80s transformed it into a jihadi state until its institutions couldn’t protect its people any more. This change coincided with the changing Muslim mind in South Asia and the Middle East. After the breakup of 1971, Bangladesh and Pakistan chose secular-democratic governments. Leaders of both governments were killed and the generals took over, strangely aping each other: Even the Islamising amendment in their constitutions had to be the eighth amendment! That India was bent on joining the Islamist bandwagon was noted by Pakistani poet Fahmida Riaz, who stayed on in India after attending a mushaira in 1981 to avoid the generals’ wrath — only to be called an Indian spy by the Muslim League government in Islamabad. She wrote in Urdu, “tum bilkul hum jaise niklay (You turned out to be just like us!/ Where were you hiding all this time, buddy?/ That stupidity, that ignorance/ We wallowed in for a century/ Look, it arrived at your shores too!)” Then Sri Lanka joined in with its ethnic-based violence, to which its Tamils responded with such original mayhem that al-Qaeda had to adopt its novel technique of killing. A Tamil suicide-bomber in India took the life of ex-prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. Today, Colombo faces a tough job in getting back to normal while religious temperatures still run high. Its next-door neighbour and a member of Saarc, the Maldives, a sinking bunch of islands, has succumbed to religion too, imprisoning its secular former president and sending out its madrassa-trained youth as Islamic State terrorists. The Saarc member in the northeast of South Asia, Afghanistan, is more primal and Hobbesian, spreading its savagery downwards into Pakistan.

Speech by Shah Rukh Khan on receiving a Honorary Degree from University Of Edinburgh Agency | New Delhi One of the most celebrated actors in the Hindi Film industry, Shah Rukh Khan is all heart when it comes to words. He has a way with them and the sheer enormity of experiences he has had in his Bollywood journey transform them into pearls of wisdom. SRK was invited to bestow these pearls on the students of the University of Edinburgh, UK, on Thursday (October 15) and as expected, King Khan held the audience in awe with his ‘life lessons’. And gave a whole lot of reasons as to why he still rules the bylanes of Bollywood. Shah Rukh Khan was presented with the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University Chancellor HRH The Princess Royal in Edinburgh. Thereby, beginning with gratitude, but not ‘humility’ as he

said, his speech was a perfect amalgamation of wisdom and humour. What made his speech even more endearing was him intercepting it with references from the movies he has done like ‘Deewana’, ‘Dil Se’, ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ and ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ among others. The

Ravi Kishen’s daughter missing, actor files police complaint

best part, however, was his reference to the famous ‘Lungi Dance’ from his movie ‘Chennai Express’, which the audience cannot get enough of, and we think neither can SRK. It is indeed an honour for me to receive this doctorate today. “Humbled” is a word often used by people in

my profession. I dislike the hypocritically obsequious connotation of it in these contexts so I’m not going to use it, but I will say that such occasions have a way of putting me right in my place! I get invited to conferences and inaugurations now and then to speak. When I receive the invi-

tations, I also receive my brief. It’s usually about “success” and my “tips” on it (not my toesthose are covered by the “I will never show my toes” clause in my acting contracts. It’s my attempt at gender equality. My costars have no nipple clauses; I have a no toes one).

Birthday Special with Hema Malini Agency | Mumbai Bhojpuri and Bollywood actor Ravi Kishen has filled a missing person’s complaint for his 19-yearold daughter with police in Mumbai. “A complaint has been filed at the Bangurnagar police station

few days ago by the actor (Ravi Kishen) and the police is probing the case,” said DCP (Detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni. Police sources claimed that his daughter had left the 44-year-old actor’s house for the second time.

Jennifer Lawrence has walked away from Boyhood director Richard Linklater’s upcoming romance, The Rosie Project. The Oscar-winning actress, 25, was slated to star in the filmmaker’s new project, which is an adaptation of author Graeme Simsion’s best-selling novel of the same name, reported Guardian online. The Rosie Project centres on a socially inept genetics professor, who creates a scientifically-crafted survey in order to

find the perfect wife, but his system is thrown off the rails when he falls in love with a woman called Rosie, who meets none of his carefully-crafted criteria. Following the news of her

departure, reports surfaced she is now in talks to star in Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky’s untitled independent film, which he hopes to begin shooting in the spring.

Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 Movie Review Agency | Mumbai Yesteryear’s Bollywood superstar, Hema Malini, who can still make heads turn with her beauty and radiant personality, turns a year older today. The B-town’s Dream Girl, who had an iconic rise to stardom, is still an inspiration for many not just for her acting but for her beauty and fitness as well. A politician, Bharata Natyam dancer, actress, director, producer and mother of two, Hema juggles many hats. On her 67th birthday today, the ac-

tress takes time off for Pinkvilla and lists her personal favourites out of 200 odd films that she has done so far in her career spanning four decades. Sholay(1975): Hema played a double role in ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’ and she won her only competitive Filmfare Best Actress Award of her career for the film. Boys will be boys. No issues. But must they be such insensitive dolts? Luv Ranjan, director of Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2, seems to think that the worse they are the better. His film homes in on a trio of Delhi-NCR boys who share a swanky flat, drink like fish, party hop, and rib each other endlessly as they hunt for love. By the look of their spacious pad and the abandon with which they blow up money, the threesome appear to be doing fine in life. What

they clearly lack is tact, common sense and luck in relationships. The girls that they hook up come with their own set of problems and the three boys have no clue how to tide over them. They sink deeper and deeper into a quagmire because, like the film they are in, they believe a girl is only an object of desire to be acquired and controlled. Each of them hits upon a girl without so much as a by your leave, and proceeds to boorishly force himself upon her. The first encounters take place in a party, at a wedding and in

the gym and the film has no room for either subtlety or finesse in the way the relationships evolve. The 2011 sleeper hit of which Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 is an ill-advised repeat act was a passable, if seriously dodgy, romantic comedy in which women were blamed for all the troubles of mankind. Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 does pretty much the same, but the novelty has worn off and it is saddled with an insufferably inept screenplay. The result: this tawdry boys-meetgirls rigmarole is a whole lot of unbearable blather.

Facebook is launching a realtime news app called Notify

Agency | New Delhi Facebook is planning another addition to its already varied repertoire of offerings, this time attempting to take over news distribution. The social media giant has been working on a new real-time news app, called “Notify”, that it expects to launch. Notify lets users subscribe to various news organisations on Facebook, called “stations”, and then send them notifications whenever the media outlet puts out a story. This is another push in the news direction for Facebook, accompanied by their recent addition of Instant articles, which repackages new stories to load them quickly and smoothly within the Facebook app itself. Notify’s direct competition will, obviously, be Twitter, which prides itself on being the bearer of breaking news. Twitter, it’s worth noting, also launched the “Moments” feature last week; a tab next to notifications that letss a user gather and sort tweets based on sections like technology, entertainment, or sports.

Amazon Poised to Win Big as Annual Festive Shopping Spree Kicks Off

Agency | Mumbai BABA Aparajith and Baba Indrajith were born 12 minutes apart. On Thursday at the MCABKC ground, Vishal Dabholkar sent them both on their way in less than 5 minutes. Not to forget in the space of two deliveries. As far as bowlers producing twin-strikes goes, it couldn’t have been more literal than this one. By getting rid of the influential twins — Indrajith the older of the two and the stand-in captain in this match and Aparajith his fill-in deputy — in rapid succession, the diminutive Mumbai left-arm spinner

had also turned the game on its head. Tamil Nadu had finished the first session rather comfortably with their score reading 102/1 and with the prospect of feasting on the already harried home team bowling attack, which looked set to get baked further under the searing October heat of Mumbai as afternoon beckoned. But in a jiffy — Dabholkar had dismissed the well-set Kaushik Gandhi two overs earlier — the visitors had self-destructed to slip from a position of strength to a state of disarray, their score reading 107/4 as the Baba

twins left the scene. Amid the mayhem and witnessing the tailspin from the other end, stood Dinesh Karthik. On his shoulders lay the responsibility of steadying the ship and lifting Tamil Nadu from the significant hole they had dug themselves into. But you can never tell which Dinesh Karthik had turned up at the crease. The one who would justify his talent and stroke his team out of trouble or that other impudent alter-ego of his that could easily as well attempt an audacious swipe in the name of a counterattack and throw it all away?

Amazon.com Inc could emerge as the biggest winner from one of India’s most important festive and shopping - seasons, after the e-tailer offered steep discounts, swift delivery and even gold bars to grab market share. The month-long festive season, which began on Monday, culminates in Diwali, or the Festival of Lights, but the first nine days are considered an especially auspicious time to make big purchases. Analysts say e-commerce firms in India could make as much as a quarter of their annual sales during this period, with the global experience, logistics network and deep pockets of Amazon putting it in a good position to grab customers from local market leader Flipkart and smaller firm Snapdeal. “Amazon has been closing in,” said Harish Bijoor, an independent brand expert and business analyst. “It has global play and is very nifty in terms of delivery.” India currently contributes the most new customers to Amazon outside the United States, the company said, making growth there a priority.

Mumbai City FC’s attacker Subhash Singh is not shy in pointing out that the Indian Super League (ISL) is a better tournament than the I-League, and it is the way forward for Indian football. “ISL is the way forward for Indian football. I-League and ISL are two different leagues. I will say ISL is better than I-League. It’s an honour to play here and it gives you the op-

portunity to improve and from my point of view ISL is the way forward if Indian football needs to improve,” the striker. The first season of ISL was a huge success and so far the second edition has started on a positive note with decent fan-following on the ground and on television. Subhash’s team Mumbai has made a slow start to the tournament but the striker is confident that the team will start

getting desired results in the coming matches despite the slow start. Mumbai have lost one and drawn one so far and are seventh on the points table. “It has been a slow start so far for us, but we are all working very hard in training. We are working hard as a team on the training ground and the pitch. So hopefully we will have positive results in the upcoming matches,” he said.

into the sunset, after safeguarding the team’s interests. Dhoni alone can see the last steps of this journey. It has made for some uncomfortable tidings in the past four months. The loss to Bangladesh in June didn’t help. Kohli’s first Test series win in Sri Lanka only increased the vol-

ume of this unrest. Much has been said about Dhoni’s leadership, and batting. Most of it has been unfair. It is one thing to discredit one of its best captains on results alone. But to ask for an end to his tenure, solely because a ready-made captain is waiting in the wings is unjustified.

The SGM, which lasted less than 10 minutes, was just a formality as he was garlanded be-

fore taking over the hot seat in the BC Roy Club House where once Dalmiya ran the world cricket administration. A former joint secretary since 2014, Ganguly took over as the president, while junior Avishek Dalmiya was formally inducted into the cricket administration as joint-secretary. The two appointments were announced by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat Nabanna three days after Jagmohan Dalmiya’s demise on September 20.

Gujarat fisherman hurt in Pakistan CM Anandiben Patel lays stone for 800firing near IMBL, 24 in captivity MW unit at Wanakbori station in Kheda Correspondent | Wanakbori

Anandiben Patel accused the erstwhile UPA government of causing Gujarat Chief Minister a six- year delay in giving necessary clearances to this power project

According to NFF Secretary Manish Lodhari, Bamaniya, a resident of Union Territory of Diu, was hit in his arm in firing that took place in the afternoon.

Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

At least one fisherman from Gujarat was injured in firing on Thursday by the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (MSA) which also captured 24 fishermen and seized four of their boats near the International Maritime Boundary Line off Gujarat coast. However, the MSA later released the injured fisherman, identified as Dhanji Bamaniya, on humanitarian grounds along with five others who sailed back to Jakhau coast on Thursday night. According to National Fishworkers’ Forum (NFF) Secretary Manish Lodhari, Bamaniya, a resident of Union Territory of Diu, was hit in his arm in firing that took place in

the afternoon. “Showing some mercy on the injured fisherman, the Pakistan MSA allowed him to sail back to Gujarat with five other fishermen who were on board ‘Surya Kiran’ boat. Bamaniya and others ventured into the sea on October 7 from Mangrol,” he said. The incident occurred as the MSA fired some rounds on their boat as “warning”, which resulted in injuries to Bamaniya. “He was hit on his arm. Luckily, he is out of danger and admitted to a hospital in Bhuj,” Lodhari said. The released fishermen took help of Coast Guard to return to Jakhau. “After these six fishermen on one boat were allowed to go, they contacted Coast Guard for help. A Coast Guard boat went

into sea and guided their boat safely to the coast,” said Lodhari. However, 24 fishermen are still in captivity of MSA and they were taken to Karachi during afternoon. “Though one boat and 6 fishermen were allowed to go, the MSA has captured 24 of our fishermen and seized four of their boats and took them to Karachi port. The fishermen told us that the MSA personnel fired on Bamaniya’s

boat as a warning,” he said. The four boats captured by MSA are- ‘Maheshwari-2’, ‘Shiv Shakti-5′, Matrubhoomi-2′ and Raj Laxmi-3’ and each of them was carrying six fishermen and sailing from Mangrol a week back. This is the second such incident of firing on Gujarat fishermen within one month. Earlier on September 18, one fisherman from Okha port was killed in firing near IMBL.

Anandiben Patel Thursday laid the foundation stone of the eighth and the biggest unit of stateowned Wanakbori thermal power station in Kheda district, with an investment of Rs 4,465 crore and power generation capacity of 800 MW. Patel accused the erstwhile UPA government of causing a six- year delay in giving necessary clearances to this power project. “We had sent an application to Government of India in 2009 for this project. Had timely environmental clearance been given, we would have been commissioning the unit today,” said Patel about the Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited-owned project that is expected to be completed by 201819. “When the project is completed, it will a BJP

SC dismisses plea against Modi Diu to host longest beach festival from December over 2012 election affidavit at the festival that will Diu Correspondent |

Agency | New Delhi

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a plea seeking legal action against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly filing a defective affidavit relating to his marital status during the 2012 Gujarat Assembly elections. A bench headed by Justice J Chelameswar rejected the plea filed by an Ahmedabad resident who had challenged the Gujarat high court order which refused to entertain his plea on the ground that it lacked merit. The complaint filed by Nishant Varma in April 2014 had sought an FIR against Modi for “hiding” his marital status in the affidavit he had filed with his nomination for 2012 As-

sembly polls (when Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat) for Maninagar seat. Verma had further contended that when Modi contested the Lok Sabha election in 2014, he mentioned his wife’s name in the affidavit for the first time, disclosing the earlier omission. Thus, Modi, in 2012, had committed an offence under section 125(A)(3) of Representation of People Act, he said. Section

125 A(3) deals with concealment of information while filing affidavit and provides for imprisonment up to six months. The high court had on July 3 dismissed the petition demanding legal action against Modi and set aside the lower court’s finding that the offence had been committed but no action could be taken as the petition was filed after a delay more than one year.

Riding their bikes on the riverfront road to Sardarnagar police station, both policemen saw these two girls clinging to each other in the waters of the Sabarmati near Subhash Bridge. “A crowd had gathered on the riverfront and bridge. Dr Nayana Patel of Akanksha Fertility Clinic in Anand has created a milestone in surrogacy. She recently oversaw the delivery of the 1001st child carried by a surrogate mother for a childless couple. In fact, twin boys were delivered for a Bengalurubased couple. With this, Dr Patel has single-handedly made Anand the surrogacy capital of the world. Now, she has to her credit the delivery of 1,001 children born to surrogate mothers. These include 507 boys and 494 girls. Dr Patel says she shares the credit for this milestone with the surro-

gate mothers who helped Anand achieve this feat at a time when it is being debated whether surrogacy should be banned. “Banning surrogacy will take away the right of an adult woman to choose how to support her family. It will also deny childless women the right to be moth ers,” she said. Dr Patel says surrogate mothers were paid Rs 1.5 lakh for each deliv-

ery in 2004. Now, they are paid anywhere from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 11 lakh. The average compensation is Rs 6 lakh. Dr Patel’s first surrogate was a 46-year-old grandmother who chose to carry her daughter’s embryo to save the girl’s marriage. The 1,001 children born through surrogates include those born to couples not only from India and NRIs but also to foreign couples from 42 countries. Dr Patel says hers is the only hospital that has formed a trust for surrogate mothers from which the women can take a loan of Rs 25,000 anytime to meet a family emergency.

generation after the Gujarat Electricity Board or GEB was unbundled) for setting up a super critical thermal power project that will have less emission, low heating and lesser fuel consumption. “Today there are seven units of 210 MW each at this power plant. This unit will add another 800

MW and it will consume 25 percent less coal than the other seven units and will bring down the cost of power generation from Rs 3 per unit to Rs 2.40 per unit,” said Energy Minister Saurabh Patel. Once ready this 800 MW is expected to add to Gujarat’s existing quota of surplus power.

award 2015 under the smart governance category. The GSHSEB has decided to fix responsibility on UGVCL for continuous electricity supply to all the examination centres. Another precaution taken by the GSHSEB is to depute IT technical experts at each examination centre to ensure all procedures from installing of CCTV cameras, recording of examinations to submission of CDs have been duly followed.

These steps are after the board discovered that corrupt compact discs (CDs) were submitted to the board, or the power supply intentionally disrupted to dodge camera footage during the few critical minutes. On enquiry from the board, this was then blamed on the erratic electricity supply for non- compliance of submitting the CCTV recorded footage and submitting ‘edited’ CDs with missing recordings.
