A day after suggesting a grand alliance in Uttar Pradesh on the lines of Bihar, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday appeared to rule out a possibility of a tie up between SP and BSP. Responding to a query at a press conference here on the possibility of BSP and SP joining hands in UP, he said “the relationship between SP and BSP is different from that between RJD & JD(U)”

Heavy rainfall has thrown life out of gear in several parts of Tamil Nadu where educational institutions remained closed even as the weather office forecasts heavy downpour in the next 24 hours. In Chennai, residents had a harrowing time due to water-logging and delay in train services. Several areas, including Mylapore (South Chennai), Vysarpadi and Perambur (North Chennai) have remained inundated since yesterday due to flooding. As several water bodies breached

their banks, hundreds of families living along Adyar river and other low lying areas are being evacuated to safer places. With roads and rail tracks submerged in water, major city stretches including Koyambedu, the place that houses city’s largest bus stand, have

been sealed off by authorities. Traffic is being diverted creating blocks that stretches upto several kilometres from city’s southern gateway. Boats are being used in flooded areas to rescue stranded people. Water seeped into hundreds of houses in south Chennai and the di-

saster management teams are stretched to their limits attending frantic calls seeking immediate rescue of residents. Transport services were the worst hit with several buses getting stuck in subways, fully submerged under the flood water. Suburban train services were also cancelled temporarily as the rail tracks were not operational along several stretches. While preparation of the Chennai corporation was ineffective, residents ended up holed in their apartments from Sunday afternoon while their vehicles were floating within the

compounds. “All senior ministers are camping in flood hit areas and districts such as Cuddalore where heavy storms have caused severe damag-

es already. Ministers are personally attending victims and distributing relief package which includes Rs 5000 cash, rice, dhoti, sari and kerosene. Corpo-

ration also has announced emergency numbers for all its regional zones,” said an officer. 71 people have died in rain related incidents so far.

Modi in Britain

The grand tamasha of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United Kingdom and his Wembley performance represents a neat conjunction between the interests of Britain and India. Greater business opportunities and friendly relationships are surely something to be celebrated, and closer integration of two influential nations has to be a source of contentment. There is much to celebrate, but as British Prime Minister David Cameron stated at the joint press conference held at 10, Downing Street, “I do not believe that we’re realising the true potential of this relationship”. The focus of Cameron’s statement was on money, and the financial benefits of greater links between British and Indian business. But it is also about electoral politics and votes. Both Cameron and Modi won unexpected majorities in the last general elections of their respective countries. In Cameron’s case, the Conservative party won a majority of seats in the House of Commons in 2015 with just under 37 per cent of the vote share. Modi’s Bhartiya Janata Party won a majority of seats in May, 2014 with less than a third of the popular vote. Both leaders benefited from a fractured opposition and weaker challengers whose narrative failed to resonate with the electorate. This leaves both the prime ministers with a mandate, albeit a fragile one. Economic competence and an ability to project national influence were key to their electoral success, and Modi’s visit to London plays to these strengths. The former chief minister of the Indian state of Gujarat, Modi played the image of an international statesman to the hilt. Not only was he feted by the once imperial queen but he also showed that India today enjoys the global influence and respect that is due to a nation of its size. Far away from the disappointing electoral aftermath of the Bihar campaign, where BJP lost to a coalition of regional parties, the Indian prime minister also got some nice pictures clicked. The visit also provided him with the links to the funding opportunities from NRI groups in the United Kingdom. For his part, Cameron got to speak to a crowd of the Indian diaspora that has traditionally supported the rival Labour party. This constituency is showing signs that they may be listening to the Conservative party’s message. The Wembley stadium provided a platform to appeal to a group of people who by the dint of their education and enterprise would be expected to be natural Conservatives, but have tended to vote for the Labour party in the past. What has gone unchallenged in the banal exchanges of the international communiqués are issues relating to human rights and freedom of speech.

I have increased my bowling load: Ishant Sharma SPORTS ROUNDUP Agency | Bangalore

Not the least bit concerned about the storm he kicked off due to an overtly aggressive demeanour during the Sri Lanka tour, Indian pacer Ishant Sharma says he does not even think about the outburst which led to a one-match ban on him. Back in the team after serving the suspension in the opening Test against South Africa in Mohali, Ishant said he prefers to look ahead instead of dwelling on whether he could have done anything differently in Sri Lanka. “Many

times in life we look back and think of a moment in the past, and wonder, ‘If I had done this or not done that, would things have been different’? There is no answer to that. When I got banned for the Mohali Test, I decided I would not look back and wonder about what would or could have happened. What happened in Sri Lanka is the thing of the past, and I prefer not to think about it,” Ishant. The pacer was criticised by several former cricketers for his outbursts during the tour with the showdown with

Ranji Trophy 2015, Group A: DelhiAssam match hangs in the balance Dhammika Prasad catching the most attention. “Dhammika Prasad was bowling bouncers to me. In an over you can only bowl

two, but he bowled a third one. I knew that he was doing it because he got hit on his hand off my bowling earlier. Anyway, when

he bowled a third bouncer, it did not come up,” he recalled. “So, I just told him, ‘You are too slow to hit me on the helmet’.

Agency | Guwahati Assam rode on KB Arun Karthik’s patient 81 to take a vital eight-run first innings lead over Delhi but the Group A Ranji Trophy cricket match is interestingly poised with the visitors reaching 101 for four in their second essay at stumps on the second day, in Guwahati on Monday. Resuming their first innings at the overnight score of 69 for three in reply to Delhi’s 149, Assam were bowled out for 157 in 64.1 overs. Besides Arun Karthik, who scored his runs off 169 balls and hit eight boundaries and three sixes, no other Assam batsmen could make

significant contributions. Skipper Gokul Sharma (24) added just two runs to his overnight score before being castled by Pradeep Sangwan. Left-arm orthodox bowler Manan Sharma was pick of the bowlers for Delhi with figures of four for 41, while Sangwan scalped three wickets for 33 runs. Delhi batsmen showed more purpose in their second innings but the visiting team skipper Gautam Gambhir’s torrid time with the bat continues as he fell for a duck, LBW to Krishna Das (2/31). But the other opener Unmukt Chand showed some spark and made 44 off 64

balls before he became Krishna’s second victim of the day. Dhruv Shorey (38) and Nitish Rana (19) both fell to Gokul Sharma (2/6). Milind Kumar and Puneet Bisht were yet to open their account at the close of play. Delhi lead Assam by 93 runs with six wickets. The match is heading for an interesting finish as two full day’s play still remains for both the sides to eke out a result. Brief Scores: Delhi: 149 & 101 for four in 44 overs (Unmukt Chand 44, Dhruv Shorey 38; Gokul Sharma 2/6). Assam: 157 all out in 64.1 overs (KB Arun Karthik 81; Manan Sharma 4/41)

NISAR biggest outcome of ISRO-NASA partnership, says NASA scientist Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

The NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) mission that involves building of a 2600 kilogram satellite that will “effectively make a timelapse movie of the earth” while keeping a close eye for ecosystem disturbances, ice-sheet collapses and natural hazards, will be first mission where collaboration between NASA and ISRO will be biggest ever, says a senior scientist from NASA on Monday. “In 2011 we started talking to ISRO and prior to that NASA was thinking of doing it (the mission) all by itself or with collaboration from Germany or Canada… It is a much bigger collaborative effort than undertaken ever before by the two agencies,” said Alok K Chatterjee, Mission Interface Manager and Launch System Engineer of NISAR project, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), NASA. Chatterjee who was in Gujarat Science City for an “outreach event” with other US-based scientists associated with the project — including NISAR project scientist Paul A Rosen, Mark Simons, Ian Joughin, Scott Hensley, Paul Siqueira and Piyush Agram — pointed out that ISRO will be providing the “spacecraft bus”, S-band SAR payload and the launch vehicle, while NASA will be providing

the L-band SAR and the engineering payload for the mission that will have a total cost of over USD one billion and is expected to be launched in 2020. According to Chatterjee, the recent collaboration between NASA and ISRO began in 2005 with the Chandrayaan-I mission where an eight kilogram Moon Mineral-

ogy mapper from NASA accompanied the mission helped in “joint-discovery” of water on moon. “JPL also provided shadow navigation support to ISRO for Chandrayaan-I because ISRO was doing it for the first time and they had do some trajectory and navigation analysis all the way to the moon. JPL provided ex-

pertise in validating and verifying all the solutions so that they can reach the moon correctly,” he added. Similar support was for provided to Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan) where JPL’s navigational expertise in deep space trajectory and maneuverability aided the mission, the NASA scientist pointed out.

Senior party leader IK Jadeja denied the road show was avoiding Patel areas. “We have designed a route to cover all three LS constituencies – Ahmedabad West, Ahmedabad East and Gandhingar – under the territory of Ahmedabad city. There is no intent to avoid Patel areas on the route,” he said.

The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has proposed to make Gujarati compulsory for Class XI and XII science stream students. The move comes in the wake of reports of youngsters in the state losing interest in their mother tongue. The move is the first phase in reviving the language and. for its implementation, inputs from various organisations, like Matrubhasha Abhiyan, that are campaigning for reviving Gujarati have already been sought by the board. In 2015, hardly 0.22 per cent students took Gujarati in Class XII science against 84.13 per cent students

who preferred English in GSHSEB board examinations. GSHSEB deputy chairman R R Thakkar confirmed the development saying, “The board has received suggestions from various sections of society recommending ways to revive interest in our mother tongue

among youngsters, especially school students. For a start, the board is working on making it a compulsory language for science stream students.” The move would mean an increase in the number of subjects for science stream students and could face the ire of students.

Defending the move, Thakar said, “Science stream students have only five subjects compared to seven for the general stream students. Thus, there should not be any problem if another mandatory subject is added”. If this plan is implemented, any Class XI student of science stream, irrespective of the medium he has studied till Class X, has to compulsorily study Gujarati for two years. At present, apart from three Science subjects — Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or Biology — and Computer Science, the Science stream students have to choose a language from among Gujarati, Hindi, Urdu, English, Sindhi, Marathi and Arabic.
