Gujarat High Court on Tuesday quizzed the state government on the maintenance and operation of the suspension bridge in Morbi town that collapsed on October 30, killing 135 people. It asked the government how “largesse” was given to an individual without floating a tender. The Ahmedabadbased Oreva group had been maintaining and managing the British-era suspension bridge on the Machchhu river. The high court, which took up the case on its own as a public interest litigation, asked the state government whether a 2008 memorandum of understanding (MoU) and a 2022 agreement with Ajanta Manufacturing Private Ltd (Oreva group) imposed any conditions regarding fitness certification of the bridge. “This (2008) agreement with Ajanta is a one-and-aquarterpage agreement, absolutely without any conditions. Uttarakhand Govt passes anti-conversion law Agency News: Dehradun
Uttarakhand government on Wednesday decided to give more teeth to the anti-conversion law by making forced conversion a cognisable offence with provision for a punishment of 10 years imprisonment. The government also gave its approval for shifting the Uttarakhand High Court from Nainital to Haldwani. The decisions were taken at a meeting of the state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, official sources said. A legislation will soon be brought in the state assembly introducing the amendments in the anti-conversion
law, they said. The Uttarakhand Freedom Of Religion Act, 2018, stipulates a prison term of up to five years for anyone convicted of “forced or fraudulent” conversion. The proposal to shift the high court to a new location is being opposed by a section of lawyers of the high court who feel it will be a loss for the hill areas of the state and goes against the principles that led to the creation of Uttarakhand. During the meeting, a total of 26 resolutions were passed by the state cabinet which included rehabilitation of 1,326 families to be affected by the construction of the Jamrani dam and increasing the subsidy on fodder and silage.

Amid rising incidents of cattle being hit by trains, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday said that the Railways will build 1,000 km of boundary walls over the next six months in sections of its network where maximum cases of cattle being run over by trains are recorded. On October 29, the front portion of the Mumbai-Gandhinagar Vande Bharat Express was damaged after the newly-inducted train run over cattle near Atul under Mumbai Central division. According to official data, cattle run overs affected 200 trains in the first nine days of October. According to ACB officials, the three arrested accused are identified as Om Singh — who is said to be the brotherin-law of AAP MLA Tripathi, his associates Shiv Shankar Pandey alias Vishal Pandey, and one Prince Raghuvanshi. The Bombay High Court on Wednesday ordered for fresh testing of Johnson & Johnson baby powder samples and permitted the company to manufacture the product but to not sell it, as per the Maharashtra government order. The company had filed a petition challenging two orders of the state government- one dated September 15 cancelling the license and the second dated September 20 ordering to immediately stop manufacturing and sale of the company’s baby powder product. The orders were passed by the joint commissioner and licensing authority of the state Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The government based its orders on the report of the Central
Drug Laboratory in Kolkata, which found the powder containing higher pH level than prescribed.A division bench of Justices S V Gangapurwala and S G Dige on Wednesday directed the FDA to collect fresh samples from the company’s factory in Mulund area of Mumbai within three days. The sample would then be sent to three laboratories - two government labs and a private one - for testing. “The samples shall be sent to the Central Drug Testing Laboratory, west zone, FDA lab and the Intertech Laboratory for testing”.
