A case to use drones for primary health care in India India has over 30,000 primary health centres (PHC) and over 250,000 sub-centres (SC) across the country that serve as the building blocks of government led primary health system. Each PHC serves 20-50,000 people with upstream linkages to district hospital and downstream linkages to about 5-10 SCs. Each of the 748 districts in India has around 20-100 PHCs depending on their population. On paper the primary health care system is a great service network. In reality, as the saying goes “a chain is only as strong as it weakest link”; the service potential of the primary health system is severely challenged by lack of logistics or supply chain system.
PM Modi to visit UP again, to lay foundation stone of Ganga Expressway on December 18 Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of the Ganga Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur at 1pm on December 18, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a statement on Thursday.The 594km-long Expressway will be laid at a cost of more than ₹36,200 crore, the PMO noted. “The route, which will comprise six lanes, will start near the Bijauli village in Meerut, extending all the way till near the Judapur Dandu village in Prayagraj. It will pass through Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh and Prayagraj,” it further said. The Expressway, the release highlighted, will be the longest in Uttar Pradesh upon its completion, connecting the western and eastern regions of the poll-bound northern state. India said on Thursday it continues to be in touch with Pakistan on modalities for supplying 50,000 tonnes of wheat as humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan via the Wagah land border crossing. New Delhi made the proposal for shipping wheat and medicines via Pakistani soil on October 7, and received a response from Islamabad only on November 24. It’s official. In Bangladesh, China backs the ruling Awami League (AL) firmly Western countries, led by the US and the EU, are becoming increasingly more supportive of the main opposition outfit, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Ironically, it was during the BNP’s tenure in 1991 followed by another 5 year term in 2001, that Sino-Bangladesh relations began to flourish. The AL leadership had never forgotten Beijing’s delay in recognising Bangladesh’s sovereignty and its consistent support to Pakistan over the years. Currently however, the BNP has bitterly attacked Beijing’s present assessment of the political situation in Bangladesh. The reason? Chinese envoy in Dhaka Mr Li Jiming warmly praised the economic progress made by Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Treating this as a provocation, BNP leaders have protested sharply against Beijing’s glowing endorsement for the ruling AL regime, which it denounces as ‘Fascist’. Western attitudes towards Bangladesh present a study in contrast. President Mr Joe Biden kept out Bangladesh, Bhutan and Sri Lanka from the US-sponsored two-day virtual Democracy summit. However, Pakistan was invited, to the surprise of many. For Bangladesh, there was a further snub: the US sanctioned some Bangladeshi civil functionaries bypassing Dhaka, for their allegedly negative anti-democratic and authoritarian role in their dealings with the AL’s political opponents and HR rights-related issues. It was the turn of Pakistan to surprise everybody, as it handed an unexpected rebuff of its own to the Yanks! It ignored Washington’s invite and skipped the long-awaited meet, expressing solidarity with China and Russia (both also uninvited) instead. Talk about adding insult to injury! The Bangladesh Government protested against the unilateral US action against its officials. It warned that such moves could affect bilateral communications in the future. Observers in Bangladesh cannot recall a time like the present, as major world powers are almost directly involved with the domestic policies of/developments in South Asian countries. China and the US have always adopted contrary positions on the pro-democracy movement in Myanmar and the frequent army interventions in the country’s governance. The contrast with Bangladesh, where regular elections have been held from the parliamentary to the civic/ municipal levels, cannot be sharper. Even so, the US has never really got on well with the AL over the years. Relations between the AL and the Western bloc have been difficult from the beginning. Led by the US, most European countries did not welcome the break up of Pakistan. They did not support the majority leader of Pakistan after the 1970 elections or his party -- Sheikh Mujibur Rahman of the AL! China stayed neutral while the West ignored Pakistani atrocities and the genocide of innocent Bengali civilians by the Pak troops using mostly US-made weapons. Even after Bangladesh became a fully functional democracy in its own right, Western obsession over the loss of Pakistan proved enduring. From Washington to Istanbul to Riyadh, pressure was repeatedly exerted on the AL not to proceed with the trial of Pak war criminals. This, despite their direct involvement in the slaughter of lakhs of people and the targeted attacks on the Hindu minority community by their Bangladeshi Islamist supporters. As many analysts have later conceded, for western ‘democracies’ to ignore blithely the genocide of innocent civilians in East Pakistan in 1970-71 was amazing indeed. No wonder the AL ignored Western protests and went ahead with its own political agenda on major issues like war crimes. . The diplomatic dissonance between Dhaka and the Western capitals widened. Western institutions and agencies refused help to Bangladesh on the construction of its massive Padma bridge, one of the biggest of its kind in the World, over allegations of corruption. Bangladesh found them untrue. Undeterred, Bangladesh secured Chinese help to implement its prestige project which is well over 95 per cent complete. Despite pressure from the West, the Hasinaled administration refused to treat Nobel laureate economist Dr Mohammad Yunus as an economic Messiah, after complaints of irregularities were made against the Grameen bank administration he headed. The US and European leaders hit back by repeatedly pulling up the AL over its election victories in recent years, alleging massive rigging - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara and intimidation in many areas.

The new plans will replace the distancebased stop-to-stop passes that were previously available. In the previous pass system, passengers had to choose a specific starting and ending stop.
Former media executive Indrani Mukerjea, who is currently facing trial for the alleged murder of her daughter Sheena Bora, has written a letter to the CBI claiming that a fellow inmate has told her that she had seen Sheena alive in Kashmir. Mukerjea is facing trial for allegedly killing her daughter Sheena on April 24, 2012. She was arrested by Khar police on August 25, 2015, and has been lodged at the Byculla Jail since September 2015. According to the police, the incident occurred late Tuesday night when a Special Operations Group (SOG) team reached Vikram Enclave in Ghaziabad following a tip-off about arms dealers being present in the area. As the officers arrested three accused persons, locals objected to it and a crowd gathered, said the police. The locals became more agitated and pelted stones on the police. The security personnel began pushing the crowd back while some locals also resorted to stray-firing, said the police. One of the constables, Vivek Bharadwaj, was hit by a stone in the eye and was treated for a minor injury, said the police.

Covid-19: India records 7,974 new cases, 343 deaths in 24 hours Agency News:New Delhi India recorded 7,974 new cases in last 24 hours, the health ministry said on Thursday morning. As many as 343 patients succumbed to the infection during this period. The Covid death toll in India is over 4.76 lakh. The daily positivity is 0.57 per cent, while the weekly positivity rate is 0.64 per cent. 98.38% recovery A total of 7,948 patients recovered from Covid-19 in last 24 hours. The overall recovery is more than 3.41 crore, which is 98.38 per cent of the total cases. The active caseload of Covid in the country is 87,245, which is 0.25 per cent of the cases reported till now. More than 66 crore samples have been tested for the infection so far, of which 12.16 lakh were tested on Wednesday. 60.12 lakh vaccinated in a day More than 1.35 billion (135.25 crore) doses of Covid-19 vaccine have been administered in the country under the nationwide vaccination drive.

SBI hikes base rates, move likely to impact existing borrowers

Village sarpanch polls suspended after candidate dies in Panchmahals Days ahead of the upcoming gram panchayat elections in Gujarat, the Returning Officer of Sehra taluka in Panchmahals district on Wednesday suspended the elections in Nandarva village, following the death of one of the five candidates in the fray for the post of sarpanch. In a circular issued under Section 23 of the Gujarat Panchayats Election Rules, 1994, the Returning Officer of Sehra Taluka suspended the elections after the death of Bharat Shankar Patel, who had collapsed during his election campaign on December 13.
Gujarat’s plea in SC challenges stay on 2003 provision to seek DM’s nod The state government, in its petition challenging Gujarat High Court’s order which had stayed operation of eight sections and subsections of Gujarat Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Act, 2021, has challenged only the stay on the provision that stipulates requirement of prior permission from district magistrate for religious conversion. The provision was introduced in the original act of 2003. Section 5 of the Act requires a person who is converting another person from one religion to another, to seek prior permission for such a conversion from the distinct magistrate and also requires the person converting to send an intimation to the district magistrate of the district where the ceremony of conversion took place.
