Ahead of the Punjab election on Sunday, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in a rare and searing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government today, accused him of blaming Jawaharlal Nehru for every problem and said: “The PM’s post has a special stature”. Manmohan Singh, 89, said the Congress had never divided the country for political gains or hidden the truth. “On one hand, people are facing problems of inflation and unemployment, on the other, the present government, in power for the last seven and a

The PM should maintain dignity rather than blame history to downplay faults. When I was Prime Minister for 10 years, I spoke through my work. ”I have at least this satisfaction that after the false accusations against me of being weak , quiet and corrupt, the BJP and its B and C-team are getting exposed in front of the country.”

“These ‘parivarwadis’ of UP never liked the might of the country and they question whatever good the country does,” the PM alleged. The PM also claimed that the support for the BJP is on the rise in the state. “Your enthusiasm shows a glimpse of the next five phases,” he told people at the rally referring to the remaining rounds of the UP polls. People have decided to celebrate Holi on March 10 itself, he added.

Punjab CM Channi responds to criticism over ‘UP, Bihar ke bhaiyya’ comment Agency News: Chandigarh Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Thursday said his recent statement during election campaigning was being “misconstrued”. A day earlier, Channi had said at an election rally, “Don’t let UP Bihar ke bhaiyya enter Punjab.” The BJP and AAP lashed out at him for the comments. In an attempt to clear the air, Channi said on Thursday that he was referring to AAP leaders and not the migrants who work in Punjab. “My statement is being misconstrued. All migrant workers who came to Punjab till date, have toiled and taken it on path to development. We have only love for them, nobody can change it,” he was quoted “I was talking about people who come from outside and create disruptions here. Punjab is as much of the people of UP-Bihar, Rajasthan and elsewhere, who come here & work, as much as it is ours. So, it is not right to present it in any other manner,” he added. Congress general secretary

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who too was present with Channi when he had make the ‘bhaiyya’ comment, said, “All that CM Charanjit Singh Channi said was that Punjab should be run by Punjabis. His statement was misconstrued.” She blamed BJP for insulting UP farmers and accused the PM of coming to Punjab when elections were near, but not during farmers’ protests. Party Will Reinstate Rule Of Law In UP, Prevent Migration For Jobs: Mayawati Agency News: Banda (UP) Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president and former chief minister Mayawati on Thursday hit out at political opponents terming them anti-development and facilitators of injustice, and promised that her party will reinstate the rule of law and prevent migration of the youth for jobs on coming to power. “We are fighting to form a majority government like in 2007 to get rid of the casteist, narrow-minded, arrogant and dictatorial rule of the BJP. You will have to support BSP, the only party that cares for all sections of the society, to ensure this,” Mayawati said addressing an election rally in Banda. The BSP formed its government in 2007 assembly elections with 206 seats but its seat count reduced to 80 in 2012 elections and further to

just 19 seats in 2017 election. The Congress has been in the power for decades after Independence but due to its bad policies, it is now out of power both at the Centre and in the state, Mayawati said and added that the party “is against people from Dalit and backward communities.” “When Congress is in power it forgets to do anything for women and people from Dalit and backward castes,” she added Dacoits used.

New Delhi Has Much To Gain From Easing Of Tensions Between Nato And Russia The Russian announcement of de-escalation of its defence posture in eastern borders withUkraine is a master stroke of diplomacy. Several components of the Russian militaryformations near Ukraine borders have completed their mission and were being stationedback, Russian defence minister had announced on Wednesday. On receiving the news, theglobal financial markets have climbed up and the oil prices have eased, hoping that theUkraine crisis will finally blow over. What is significant is that the announcement came when the Russian president VladimirPutin is hosting the new German chancellor Olaf Scholz in Moscow with a bit of a fanfare. The treatment to the German chancellor stands in sharp contrast to downright roughhandling of UK foreign minister and even the French president by the Russian diplomaticestablishment. In a joint press statement of the visiting British foreign minster with the Russian one, the hostleft the conference venue abruptly with the observation in response to journalists query thatthe dialogue was between the “mute and a deaf”. The visiting dignitary was then left to facethe music. Giving the importance to Germany in diplomatic parleys over this heightenedthreat in Europe is a clear effort at braking up the show of Western unity in Europe Union’sstand against the threat from Moscow.Only a week back, as French president Emmanuel Macron was visiting Moscow in anunilateral effort to defuse tensions, Putin has flared up in a joint press conference with him.Putin had used the most foul language against Ukraine, and particularly its president, onabiding by the Minsk agreement. That was an affront to the French president and hisparleying for peace in the eastern borders of EU when France is becoming its president forthe next six months. On the other hand, Olaf Scholz is the new German chancellor, replacing Angela Merkel, whohad a pre-eminent position in European diplomacy and in relation to Russia. Merkel had in away mollycoddled Russia and Putin while she pursued the direct natural gas pipeline forcarrying urgently needed fuel for Germany and broader Europe. That is in dire interest of Germany as well as Europe. However, it is also a lifeline for Russia.Selling natural gas and oil is a prime condition for Russian solvency and these provide themuch needed vitamin supplies to the country’s emaciated economy. One has to rememberRussia had notched up a foreign exchange war chest of over $600 billion with energy salesand exports.Russian manufacturing industry has collapsed since the days of opening up its economyfollowing the crash of the Soviet communist system. Its only saviour in the currentcircumstances is the export of fuel and energy items. The revenues from these exportsallows Russia meet urgent imports. Russia’s quarterly earnings on gas and oil exports runs roughly to $250 billion. The newpipeline, being built mainly on the back of steadfast support from Germany, offers apermanent income stream for Russia. Hostilities over Ukraine would have ended thatbonhomie over the Nordstream 2 pipeline and ended the kind of income certainty thatRussia dearly is looking forward to.US president Biden had directly hinted at this possibility in his telephone conversations withpresident Putin. Germany would have been helpless to pursue the pipeline ini the face of EUopposition to it after a Russian invasion of Ukraine.Hence, a de-escalation of the crisis when the new German chancellor Scholz is hisdiplomatic iniatives, gives a special status to Germany and its new chancellor. ChancellorScholz strait away gets a nodal position in European affairs at the same time Russiapreserves its core interests.President Putin’s aggressive position on Ukraine had in fact unwittingly painted himself into acorner where he was looking for a face saving escape clauses from the impasse. Germanchancellor’s visit had provided him that vital escape route. But then, why did the Russianpresident did not accept the olive branch that Monsieur Macron had extended with someFrench flair? There are two aspects to this.First, by the time the French president was visiting the fear of the Russian bear had notreally peaked. After all, Russia did want that Eastern Europe and the western powers inEurope should live in a state of fear of Russia that should stall in any future expansion of theNATO in Russian satellite areas.Russia had demanded formally that NATO should guarantee that no further expansion ineastern Europe should - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara be allowed and NATO forces.

With restrictions coming on and off, that’s how the situation seems to be like in the near future, at least. The people have been through three unwelcome Covid waves and hence, the only silver lining is that they are now better informed and prepared. With airports bustling once again, the socially-distanced travellers are now armed with masks, sanitisers, gloves and most importantly, travel insurance to protect themselves While 2020 saw a near-absolute standstill in mobility, the travel sector gradually started picking up pace and even inches back to pre-pandemic levels depending on the caseload.
