Gujarat Lions V/s royal challengers bangalore (8 : 00PM) HC asks SBI not to finalise benefit options for staff of

Agency | Hyderabad The Hyderabad High Court has directed the State Bank of India not to finalise the options regarding retirement benefits offered to the officers of its associate banks until June 15. The SBI had set the deadline of April 13 for the officers of five associate banks (which merged with it on April 1) for choosing options regarding provident fund, pension and gratuity benefits, among other issues. Justice Naveen Rao said in his interim order on April 13 that as “doubts arising out of various clauses of option notification are yet to be cleared”, the SBI shall not finalise.

Agency | Surat Virtually sounding the poll bugle in Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today led a 11 km roadshow in the city, a Patel community stronghold, where he was accorded a rousing reception. The roadshow, which began from the airport around 7.25 PM and ended at 9.25 PM at the Circuit House, was a mega outreach by Modi in the election year after the BJP decided to project him as the face of 2017 state Assembly polls, which will be a battle of prestige for the Prime Minister in his home state. This is Modi’s first visit to Surat, the hub of Patidar agitation for reservation in government jobs and educational institutions, after assuming the office in 2014. A large number of people, waving the tricolour, and chanting “Modi! Modi!” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”, stood along

the road illuminated with lights of different colours as the Prime Minister acknowledged greetings from the cheering crowd by waving to them while standing through the open sunroof of an SUV for almost two hours. On his arrival at the Surat airport this evening, Modi was greeted by Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, Deputy CM Nitin Patel and state BJP chief Jitu Vaghani before he embarked on the roadshow to the Circuit House in Athwalines area, where he will stay overnight. As Modi came to his home state for the first time after the BJP’s resounding victories in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the state party unit made every effort to welcome him in grand style in Surat, which has a sizable population of Patels and had witnessed large-scale violence during the quota agitation

in 2015. During the roadshow, the PM was welcomed by various community organisations, youths and women at welcome points set up every 200 meters along the route. Apart from the 3D laser shows at regular intervals and colourful LED light decoration, an 11 km-long saree with names of various government schemes printed on it was also tied along the route. Large hoardings welcoming Modi were put up at major spots by local party leaders. City residents had started thronging the route since afternoon to have a glimpse of Modi and to capture his image on their cell phones. People belonging to different communities, including Punjabis, Tamils and Marathis, welcomed the PM by turning out in their traditional attire. Shops, hospitals, schools and other residential and commercial premises along the route were illuminated. A 1008 metre-long welcome banner signed by over one lakh people was also on display. Modi’s convoy was led by 50,000 youths, including women, on 25,000 bikes. A 22-feet tall cutout of Modi was also installed near the airport. At several places sand sculptures were created on the pet themes of the Modi government about saving the girl child, their education, digital India and other initiatives.

on Kashmir. The report, submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh last year, notes that Kashmiris are angry over the use of pellet guns only in the strife-torn region. After holding extensive consultations with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the Home Ministry on Monday issued Standard Operating Procedures (SoPs) for security agencies deployed in Kashmir and directed them to use pellet guns as the second last resort. The ministry also said that the government would ensure the supply of plastic bullets and PAVA shells to be used on stone pelters in the Valley instead of pellets. It also sought a report from the ITBP/CRPF regarding the recent videos of jawans being assaulted

in Kashmir during election duty for the Srinagar bypolls. There are however no plans to take up former Union minister Yashwant Sinha’s report on Kashmir. The report, submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh last year, notes that Kashmiris are angry over the use of pellet guns only in the strife-torn region. The central government had on April 10 informed the Supreme Court about new SoPs to tackle stone pelters, one of which included the introduction of new rubber-based shots instead of pellets. This came two weeks after the SC had asked the government to consider using alternatives other than pellet guns to deal with protesters in Kashmir, as efforts needed to be made to ensure nobody was harmed. “Being a welfare state, it is a duty of the government to ensure safety of its people as well as security forces. The purpose is not to cause physical harm to its people but at the same time protect all,” a bench led by Chief Justic of India JS Khehar had said.

Despite PM Modi’s popularity, Odisha still a long shot for the BJP

Emerging from the meeting of the party national executive on Saturday, President Amit Shah declared that the BJP will take Odisha when it goes to the polls in 2019, coterminous with the general elections in the country. From “panchayat to parliament,” he said, the party is geared up to win every election that the country sees between now and then. Shah’s confidence was echoed by every leader at the two-day conclave, which saw chief ministers from 13 states and almost the entire cabinet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance. The crowds at Modi’s roadshow from the airport to the venue of the meeting prompted some analysts to draw parallels with the popular support Indira Gandhi had once won in this eastern state. While there might be some truth in all of this, a closer scrutiny of the reality on the ground would suggest winning Odisha is still a long shot for the BJP. Much of the confidence that the BJP exudes over Odisha comes from the panchayat elections held in February. The BJP won 297 of 853 zilla parishad seats, riding on an anti-incumbency mood against the 17-year-old government of chief minister Naveen Patnaik and his Biju Janata Dal that the faction-ridden Congress party failed to cash in on. The BJP’s gain came mostly at the Congress’s expense. Naveen’s party still won 474 seats, which put the party ahead in about 94 of the 147 assembly constituencies in the state. The victories for the BJP put the party ahead in 41 constituencies. For the sake of brevity, if we were to make a simple extrapolation from the zilla parishad result, it doesn’t give BJP even half the seats the BJD would win if elections are held today – let alone a majority in the assembly. Yet like a fox in the henhouse, the BJP has managed to ruffle a party that has a stable, long-running government but whose organisational base is weakening from years of complacency and neglect. Modi’s informal Bhubaneswar roadshow last week drew about 100,000 people, his persona is still a growing phenomenon in the state and a wider proBJP wave in the rest of the country might not leave Odisha untouched. So while the electoral math is not yet in its favour, the BJP’s fortunes are on an upward swing in the state, which will put Patnaik’s government under pressure and test his mettle as a political strategist. For now, the BJP is quick to hype the party’s zilla parishad performance and project itself as the principal challenger to Naveen’s BJD in the next election to the state assembly. A further deep dive into the panchayat results shows the BJP’s win was limited to the top tier. An overwhelming number of sarpanchs and panchayat samiti members, for which elections are not fought on party symbols, came from the Congress and the BJD. Worse, the BJP did poorly in the constituencies of its top leaders from the state, including the president of its Odisha unit, Basant Panda, and union ministers Jual Oram and Dharmendra Pradhan.

Kriti Sanon: Sushant Singh Rajput kept me on my toes ‘Raabta’ shoot

Agency | Mumbai Actress Kriti Sanon said her co-star Sushant Singh Rajput kept her on her toes during the shooting of their upcoming film ‘Raabta’. “He (Sushant) is fabulous. He is an amazing actor so he keeps you on your toes. He gets into the skin of the character and does a lot of homework in detail. If you have a good co-actor your performance also enhances,” Kriti said. Ever since Sushant and Kriti began shooting for their upcoming romantic drama, reports of their growing closeness started doing the rounds. When asked about the same, Kriti said, “It’s better to ignore them.” The 26-year-old actress will be seen doing some action sequences in ‘Raabta’ and she enjoyed every bit of it. “There is a

section in the film that requires action. I always wanted to do it. So I am excited about it. It makes you feel little stronger when you doing and learning it. It is very difficult to do it. I have had lot of cuts and bruises but it was a great experience,” she said. Directed by Dinesh Vijan and produced by Homi Adajania and T-Series, the film is set to release on June 9. Kriti was last seen in 2015 ‘Dilwale’ and had no release last year, but the actress said absence from big screen did not bother her. “I was working constantly. If I am not working and sitting at home then I get very restless. But I was constantly working. I have finished ‘Raabta’ and ‘Bareily Ki Barfi’. I will have back-to-back releases. Release of a film is unfortunately not in my hands,” she said.

Fast and Furious 8 is biggest box office opener EVER. Then why it failed to beat expectations?

Agency | Mumbai

Agency | Mumbai The eighth installment in the Fast and the Furious is on the path to becoming the biggest worldwide debut of all time, besting both Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Jurassic World. Universal Pictures on Sunday estimated that The Fate of the Furious’ would earn a record $532.5 million worldwide over the holiday weekend, thanks to a particularly robust showing in 63 territories, including China. If the figures hold, it will just inch past the previous record holder, Star Wars: The Force Awakens which launched to $529 million in December of 2015 without China. The film broke the record for biggest international weekend ever, with $432.3 million. The previous record holder was Jurassic World with $316.7 million. “There is no market that hasn’t had a strong reception,” said Duncan Clark, Universal’s president of international distribution. “Whatever culture, whatever language, whatever country, we seem to have found a home.” The China opening alone brought in a record $190 million followed by $17.8 million from Mexico and $17 million from the UK and Ireland. An estimated $100.2 million of the global total comes from 4,310 North American theaters — a second best for the franchise and enough to easily top the domestic charts, but well below the $147.2 million opening of Furious 7 in 2015. Domestically, there are indica-

tions that a franchise centered on muscle cars and physics-defying stunts, has crested. There are important reasons for the fall off. Furious 7 served as a memorial of sorts to Paul Walker, the franchise star whose 2013 death in a car accident shattered his co-stars and many fans. IndieWire’s David Ehrlich labeled the film the worst of the series, while the Los Angeles Times’ Justin Chang argued the franchise had jumped the shark, or in this case, the nuclear submarine. That’s not to say there weren’t some loud advocates. Variety’s Owen Glieberman, for instance, praised the picture as a “dazzling action spectacle.” Audiences agreed, handing “The Fate of the Furious” an A CinemaScore. For the studio, Fast 8 stands on its own as being “an extraordinary result.” “Each one of these films has its own momentum,” said Nick Carpou, Universal’s president of domestic distribution. Gary Gray and in front of the camera with Charlize Theron. The $100.2 million is slightly below analyst expectations for the film. Audiences were 58 percent male, 50 percent under the age of 25 and diverse (41 percent were Caucasian, 26 percent Hispanic and 19 percent African American). The studio has not released an official production budget, but it is reported to be in the pricey $250 million range. However, an A Cinema Score from exit polls suggest that it will have sufficient staying power.

Though the movie will be quite different from the original, Judwaa 2 will be using a couple of Anu Malik tracks from the first Judwaa, like Oonchi Hai Building. We all know that popular director David Dhawan is making a sequel to his ’90s hit Judwaa, which originally starred Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor and Rambha, along with Shakti Kapoor, Kader Khan, Anupam Kher and Satish Shah. Salman Khan won’t return to the sequel in the main lead capacity, instead, he would rather be happy in a cameo appearance. Getting into Salman’s shoes will be Varun Dhawan, who will be seen for the first time in a double role. In place of Karisma Kapoor and Rambha, we will have Taapsee Pannu and Jacqueline Fernandez. Though the movie will be quite different

from the original, Judwaa 2 will be using a couple of Anu Malik tracks from the first Judwaa, like Oonchi Hai Building. A fan club of Varun Dhawan shared a video on their Insta timeline. The video shows Varun and Taapsee rehearse their dance moves to the recreated track. It is a surprise, since the original song was more of a fun number and not a dance track. But going by the below video, it looks like a dance track in the movie. Jacqueline Fernandez is missing from the rehearsal that is happening in London, though it is said that she will join the rehearsals later. Varun Dhawan and Taapsee Panuu are currently shooting for Judwaa 2 in London and the duo have been rehearsing for the hit track Oonchi Hai Building from the original Salman Khan starrer Judwaa.

Raveena Tandon hits back at CBFC over ‘Maatr’, says Censor Board is “bound by archaic laws” Agency | Mumbai

Raveena Tandon’s comeback film ‘Maatr’ has landed in trouble with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film, which talks about the sensitive issue of rape, was reportedly refused certification owing to some gruesome scenes that were deemed inappropriate for viewing by the Board. This decision has understandably not gone down well with the actress. Talking to a leading daily, Raveena asserted that the Censor Board is bound by “archaic laws” and it should consider changing with the times. She further went on to say that a film like ‘Maatr’ needs to be told without sugarcoating the content. Raveena also added that if we don’t show the reality, then the audience will remain indifferent to brutality and rape will still remain a taboo.

Agency | New York Snapchat today refuted the reported claims of a former employee who alleged that its chief executive officer Evan Spiegel made negative comments about the Indian market, saying the multimedia mobile app is for everyone and the company is “grateful” to its Indian users. “Obviously Snapchat is for everyone! It’s available worldwide to download for free,” a spokesperson for Snapchat said in a statement to CNN. Snapchat is strongly denying allegations by a former employee Anthony Pompliano, who alleged in a lawsuit that Mr Spiegel had once shot down his suggestion to pursue growth in certain international markets. Mr Pompliano alleges that Mr Spiegel said Snapchat is “only for rich people” and that he didn’t want to “expand into poor countries like India and Spain. “Those words were written by a disgruntled former employee. We are grateful for our Snapchat community in India and around the world,” the spokesperson said. The claims emerged last week when documents were made public from a lawsuit by Mr Pompliano against Snapchat’s parent company, Snap. Mr Pompliano was fired in 2015 after only three weeks at the company. Mr Spiegel’s remarks caused an uproar in India where users are quickly uninstalling the Snapchat app. However, in a case of mistaken identity, many people downgraded and uninstalled the mobile application of e-commerce platform Snapdeal instead of Snapchat to mark their protest against the unverified comments of Snapchat founder-cum-CEO about the Indian market.

At the fag end of an absorbing 54-minute battle, when an off-balance Kidambi Srikanth sent his leaping overhead smash out along the sidelines, his opponent, Bhamidipati Sai Praneeth, collapsed onto his back and blinked up from misty eyes at the powerful lights in the Singapore Badminton Association hall, unable to digest the fact that he had just become India’s second Super Series male champion. It was heart-warming to see the Singapore Open Super Series winner receive a warm embrace at the net from his rival, who incidentally happened to be the country’s first Super Series title-winner, but was also his close friend and regular sparring partner at Hyderabad’s Gopichand Academy. “I have no words to express my feelings at this moment,” the champion said, in a courtside interview, immediately after the summit clash which he won by a 17-21, 21-17, 21-12 scoreline. “It’s the best feeling. I

have been waiting for this for a long, long time. I knew I had been playing well throughout this entire tournament, and had a great chance of winning the title. I must thank the large number of Indian fans who turned up and supported me in every one of my matches.” A few minutes later, Praneeth had wrapped himself in the Indian tricolor and clambered proudly atop the rostrum to receive from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) president, Poul- Erik Hoyer-Larsen, the silver salver and cheque for US$ 26,250 reserved for the men’s singles winner of the $350,000 tournament. Ranked 30th on the BWF ladder, one place below Srikanth, Praneeth had won the Canada Open Grand Prix last year, and had also reached the final of the Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold tournament in Lucknow, earlier this year. The 24-year-old Andhra Pradesh native has now joined the ranks of an elite group of players who have won at least one Super Series title.

Three Indian sportstars have been named in Forbes’ Under-30 Superachievers list from Asia with Sakshi Malik, Dipa Karmakar and Sharath Gayakwad named. Gymnast Dipa Karmakar, wrestler Sakshi Malik and Sharath Gayakwad have been named in the list of Under 30 achievers from Asia for the year 2017. The list includes over 50 Indians across the board including the two ladies from the sporting world. Sakshi Malik rose to stardom after her bronze medal win at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Meanwhile Karamakar became the first Indian gymnast to qualify for the finals of the sports at the same Olympics. India has 53 achievers in total in the list which is second only to China with 76 names in the honorees list of 300 impressive young entrepreneurs. In the sporting arena from India, Karmakar and Malik are the marquee faces. “While she didn’t win a medal, she ranked an impressive fourth on

her first-ever Olympic outing, missing the bronze by a hair’s breadth – 0.15 points,” Forbes said on Karmakar. Forbes celebrated Malik’s rise to fame and to play the sport while hailing from a small town of Rohtak to face a lot of local opposition to take up the sport when she was just 12. The list also features Gayakwad, 25, India’s first Paralympic swimmer, coach and Arjuna award winner who has won 96 medals for the country. “Swimming wasn’t enough – he realised that the struggle to find swim apparel was still difficult in India – so he formed Gamatics, an aggregator between international brands and domestic retailers, for anyone to find swimwear in India,” Forbes said. Other prominent names from outside India in the list are: Chen Long (Chinese badminton player), Shinji Kagawa (Japan’s footballer), Joseph Schooling (Singaporean swimmer) and Son Heungmin (Korea’s footballer) and Chen Ruolin (Chinese diver).

The wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation declined by 0.85 percentage points to 5.7 per cent in March over 6.5 per cent in the previous month, even as food part of it rose during the period. Going forward, particularly from July, the inflation trajectory will be decided by the behaviour of monsoon and expectations built on that to the large extent. Indian Meteorological Department is slated to provide first prediction of the monsoon for 2017 on Tuesday. The private weather forecaster SkyMet has predicted slightly below normal rains. Some economists believe that inflation, particularly food part, faces upside risks which would force the Reserve Bank of India to go for continued pause so far as the repo rate is concerned. The movement of WPI inflation was in contrast to the CPI inflation over the same period. Data released last week showed that retail inflation touched a five-month high of 3.81 per cent in March on costlier food items. Food items have higher weight of over 45 per cent in the consumer price index than just over 14 per cent in WPI. Food inflation in the WPI terms rose to 3.2 per cent in March from 2.7 per cent in the previous month. This was largely due to inflation in vegetables which stood at 5.7 per cent compared to deflation (the rate of decline in prices) of eight per cent during this period. However, all vegetables did not move in the same direction. In fact, potatoes saw higher rate of decline in prices at 17.1 per cent in March compared to 8.8 per cent in the previous month. Onions also continued to see deflation. However, deflation in onions came down to 10.8 per cent from 18.8 per cent during this period. The WPI inflation moved down in March despite the fact that it was deflation at 0.45 per cent a year ago which should ideally exert an upward pressure on the inflation this point of time.

The Feroz Shah Kolta Stadium - understandably half-filled for a 4PM start on a weekday - was just in no mood to groove to the DJ’s tunes in the sweltering heat. And you can’t even blame the poor chap who constantly shuffled between the hit numbers and remixed versions of some old classics to get the crowd going. Even during Sanju Samson’s boundary-hitting spree in the powerplay, it became slightly difficult to keep the audience motivated. The boundaries were welcome but not the music or the distinct IPL tune that otherwise sparks a Mexican wave of its own. Fortunately for Delhi, and the home crowd, this is the only day game they had in its roster this season. The media box is indeed the best seat in the house, isn’t it? A brilliant view with air conditioning. Who would mind that, especially on a day when the temprature outside is 43 degrees. The first innings sees a generally relaxed atmosphere. The scribes aren’t busy punching away to glory in the first half and there’s always a bit of banter in the room. Unless that unwanted guest now known as a permanent resident of the Feroz Shah Kotla pressbox - decides to wake up from slumber and make an appearance. To the outsiders, its still

a scary sight to have a couple of fluttering pigeons hovering over, trying to escape the authorities’ trap. The localities carry on unperturbed. One wicket brings two... nearly so for Delhi Daredevils. One ball after Shreyas Iyer lost his wicket looking for a suicidal second run, the out-of-form Karun Nair edged to the man behind the stumps, only for it to pop right out of Robin Uthappa’s gloves. Less than fraction of a second after the second time-out was called for, Delhi Daredevils mentor Rahul Dravid stormed into the middle with his notebook in hand. Even as Pant, who had just walked in, helped himself to some water, Dravid got into a deep discussion with Karun Nair for nearly as long as the time-out lasted. All in vain though, eventually. Whatever the mentor had to say, didn’t seem to help. Nair’s wretched run continued as the Karnataka batsman couldn’t last an over more. Nathan Coulter-Nile - the ex-Delhi pacer, bagging second of his three wickets in the day. Rishabh Pant had been in the middle for less than two overs when he called for a change of bats. Delhi’s innings needed a desperate boost after slowing down considerably in the middle overs and if there was one man who could add that zest, it was Pant.

The Supreme Court on Monday said former BCCI president N Srinivasan cannot represent the board in the 24 April International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting as he has been held guilty of “conflict of interest” and “abuse of authority.” The court was informed that Srinivasan and Niranjan Shah, who were rendered ineligible to become office-bearers in the BCCI and state cricket associations by virtue of the apex court’s verdict, could participate in Tuesday’s special general body meeting of BCCI and may be nominated to take part in the ICC meeting. ”N Srinivasan cannot go (for ICC meeting),” a bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra said. ”This person (Srinivasan) was held guilty by this court for conflict of interest and abuse of authority. He cannot go,” the bench, also comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud, said, adding “a man, once having a conflict of interest, cannot go”. ”Regard being had to the sig-

nificance of representation of the BCCI in the said international body, ie ICC, it is directed that Amitabh Chaudhary shall represent the BCCI before ICC and Rahul Johri shall accompany him and also attend the meeting of the chief executive officers,” the bench said. The top court, on 22 January, 2015, had barred Srinivasan from contesting any BCCI polls unless he forsaked ownership of an IPL team. The court had also assailed the amendment in BCCI rules permitting cricket administrators like Srinivasan to have commercial interest by owing teams in IPL and Champions League and had said it was bad on grounds of conflict of interest. During the hearing on Monday, senior advocate Kapil Sibal and advocates representing the parties in the matter said that Chaudhary was a qualified person and was well-versed with all the facts. So he could be nominated to attend the ICC meeting. Senior advocate P Chidambaram, appearing for the apex court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), said the issue was whether a person who has been disqualified by virtue of the court’s verdict, could be nominated to represent the BCCI in the ICC meeting in which revenue-sharing between the members of the apex cricket body would be discussed, apart from other issues. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, who was appearing for the cricket associations of the armed forces, association of universities and Railways, told the court that a person having the know-how and experience of at least 15-20 years in the affairs of cricket body should go to attend the ICC meeting.

The Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) will organise a Diamond Detection Expo and Symposium at Samast Patidar Bhavan in Katargam here on Friday and Saturday. The event will be organised to help traders detect synthetic diamonds from the natural ones. Several national and international companies and institutes like DRC Techno, GIA, HRD Antwerp (Europe’s leading authority in diamond certification), Gemological Science International, IIDGR (of De Beers’ group, IGI, Indian Diamond Institute and GII will participate. Dinesh Navadia, president of Surat Diamond Association and Gujarat region chairman of GJEPC, said, “International representatives from Bonas (Diamond Brokers and Consultants) will give a detailed presentation on synthetic diamonds. Besides, there will a panel discussion by the industry experts, including national chairman of GJEPC Praveen Shanker Pandya.” He added India is the second largest producer of synthetic diamonds in world. “Those involved in synthetic diamond business also do not come out openly.” At times, synthetic diamonds are mixed with the natural ones and it is impossible for anyone to identify them without the help of latest technologies. The industry experts believe though only one percent mixture is done but it affects the business. The main reason behind this is lack of information among the businessmen on identifying synthetic diamonds from the natural ones.Navadia further said, “First such event was organised in Mumbai and after getting a good response from the industry, we have planned to organise it here in the diamond city (Surat). We expect a large number of diamond businessmen to be benefited by this event.”

‘Form ministry of minority affairs in Gujarat’

Agency | Ahmedabad A civil rights organization ‘Minority Coordination Committee Gujarat’ has demanded the formation of a ministry of minority affairs in the state and also allocation of separate financial provisions in the state budget. Mujahid Nafees, convener of MCCG, said that the minorities in Gujarat do not have any separate ministry for minority affairs nor any special budget allocation is being done

for the upliftment of minority communities. He said that his organization will send over one lakh postcards to Gujarat chief minister, Vijay Rupani, to press their demand. In Gujarat, there is no such scheme for minorities to perform their religious rituals, which is a glaring example of discrimination, said Nafees. There is no grievances redressal mechanism for minorities in Gujarat in the form of a commission, he said. Nafees demanded that the government should open higher secondary schools in such areas where minorities are residing in considerable numbers and the certificate of a madrassa should be recognized as equivalent to that of the state board.
