(8:00 PM)

Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel on Tuesday refuted media reports which suggested that BJP is mulling to remove her and bring in another party leader at the helm of affairs in the state, saying “nothing like that is on”. “Nothing like that is on,” Anandiben told reporters at Indore in Madhya Pradesh where she had gone to participate in the ongoing Simhastha Kumbh at Ujjain and meet spiritual guru Bhaiyu Maharaj. media for linking her and state Health Minister Nitin Patel’s visit to Delhi, suggesting that a change of leadership in Gujarat was imminent. The Gujarat CM arrived at Indore to meet spiritual guru Bhaiyu Maharaj at his Vijay Nagar residence. When mediapersons asked her about reports of change of leadership, she quipped “At present, I am here in Indore.” “You (media) had linked two different visits to Delhi to come to this conclusion. I had gone to Delhi for the meeting related to water

crisis and Nitinbhai (Nitin Patel, health minister) had gone to Delhi on the NEET issue,” she said. Asked whether the BJP’s political base has suffered because of Patel quota agitation, she said, “At present there is no Patel agitation going on in the state. This protest is completely over now.” Speculations are rife in a section of media about a possible change of leadership in Gujarat ahead of the 2017 elections. The reports had said that BJP might ask Anandiben Patel to step down as chief minister

Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel is likely to launch ‘Smart village’ program on 22nd of May on second anniversary of her government. She will also felicitate villages having 100% toilet facility. As per Chief Minister’s appointment diary, she is going to attend Education department workshop and announces various works on 25 May. program at Umparpada and Ankleswhar in central Gujarat on 20 May. She will also attend Lok Samvad Setu program at Olpad and at Choryasi on 19th. On same day she will dedicate affordable housing scheme in Surat.

Gujarat unit spokesperson also denied that a leadership change was on the card. “We are preparing an elaborate programmes for celebration of two years rule of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Anandiben Patel in Gujarat. In the midst of this there are such baseless reports of change in leadership, which we totally deny,”

state BJP spokesperson Bharat Pandya said. Gujarat Health Minister Nitin Patel, whose name was doing the rounds to succeed Anandiben Patel, spoke in a similar vein. Nitin Patel, who is the number two in the Anandiben government, said there is no move to change the Chief Minister. “Nothing of that sort is on,” he said. “He is our party chief. I do meet him often,” he said, brushing aside any significance to his meeting BJP chief Amit Shah in Delhi yesterday.

and projected Nitin Patel as a front-runner for the post, after both of them were in Delhi on Monday. They also said the change of leadership in Gujarat was necessitated by to poor handling of the quota agitation by Anandiben, and strains caused by infighting in the party’s state unit. Anandiben was made Chief Minister in May 2014, after Nar-

endra Modi was elected as Prime Minister. Asked about the purpose of her over one-and-a-half hour meeting with the spiritual guru, with whom recently RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat also had a meeting, Anandiben said she took his guidance for agriculture and education and would try to implement his suggestions in Gujarat. Exit Poll predictions: New highs, new lows

The inexactitude of exit polls has now been borne out on several occasions, the last one being the Bihar assembly polls where most went horribly wrong. Yet, in our eagerness to learn of the verdict before the verdict so to speak, we lap up the exit polls with fervour. Some leaders go to the extent of accepting congratulatory messages once these polls are out. However, with the caveat that the latest polls to the assembly elections in five states could go wrong, the results throw up a number of interesting trends. One is that the BJP has opened its innings in Assam, its strategy being a clever blend of moderation and anti-incumbency hype. If Assam goes the BJP way, party president Amit Shah will regain his reputation as a master strategist whose formidable skills had taken a beating after Bihar. However elated the BJP may be, it was clear well before the elections that the Tarun Gogoi administration was tired and stuttering after long years in power and no new ideas to offer. In Bengal, again, there are no surprises and it was going to be Mamata all along; the only issue being the margin of victory. The Congress-Left alliance was never going to upset the Trinamool applecart, but here we see an interesting combination reminiscent of the days when the two shared power at the Centre. A poor showing will mean that the knives will be out for the CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury who is credited with being the mastermind of this tie-up in the face of the fact that the two parties are traditional rivals and fought each other in Kerala. In Tamil Nadu, the DMK seems to have risen from the ashes of Amma and is slated to make a comeback. The politics of competitive freebies could tilt the balance either way, though the fact is that the empress of Poes Garden’s increasingly isolated and imperious behaviour could have cost her some votes among a populace which tends to feel abandoned by the public absence of its leaders. In contrast, the nonagenarian M Karunanidhi was a beehive of activity, motoring across the state dispensing freebies. In Kerala, the only surprise will come if the UDF bucks the trend and beats the LDF, though the polls show that things will run to pattern. But the BJP has made the fight a triangular one in many areas. If the BJP gets five or more seats that it is predicted to, it will have breached the bastion and this could well mean its rise in the coastal state in the years to come. The Congress does not seem to feature much and this should cause some real introspection within the party in the days to come. Seats or no seats, it is advantage BJP on the national front and for the Congress, the loser is really standing small. If the polls are right, that is.

Sasural Simar Ka lead is now a fly, Twitter swats away the idea Agency | New Delhi

Honey, I shrunk the daughter-in-law. Sasural Simar Ka makers have figured out how to keep the TRPs coming – copy ideas from across the world and make them so inane that audience has its breath taken away. Like sending the bahu to Pataal Lok, making her fight with an icchadhari peacock or the latest insanity – turning her into a fly! The show had everyone’s attention a few weeks ago when it copied a Game of Thrones trailer. This week, it broke a new record. The saas-bahu saga, starring Dipika Kakar and Avika Gor in lead roles, turned into a supernatural fantasy drama two years ago when they decided that mortal human beings are way too boring to keep the

audience hooked on for years. (Yes, people have been watching this drama for years. They had things like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi -eight years running -- as reference point). So they had icchadhari naagins, ghosts and ‘daayans’ thrown in to add to the grandeur. But the makers of the show took it way

beyond stupid last week when they decided to turn their lead protagonist, Simar (Dipika Kakar), into a fly! This is how it happened -- Simar decides to save an angel that is about to die in her house. During the attempt, she somehow manages to disturb a rishi who gets angry and decides to turn her into a fly.

All work, no break makes Radhika Apte a busy actor

After a prolific 2015, with films like Badlapur (2015) and Hunterrr (2015) that achieved commercial success and won her critical acclaim, Radhika Apte has been having a rather packed 2016 as well. She has already had two releases this year, and is shooting for two other projects. This has left the actor with no time

She then rushed to Manali to shoot for Guneet Monga’s international film. After wrapping that up, she took off to London (UK) for the shoot of another short film. When she returns from London, she will start promoting her

upcoming film.” That’s not all. The actor also has a film opposite south star Rajinikanth releasing this year (Kabali), making it a jam-packed 2016 for her. Though Radhika remained unavailable for a comment, her spokesperson confirmed the news and said, “Radhika has a chock-o-block schedule. She has been juggling several work commitments.”

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Delhi Daredevils are contenders for a place in the playoffs. Their cogent bowling and the experience of skipper Zaheer Khan has come in good stead this season. But, it is the stellar batting display that has been the biggest surprise. In the lead-up to the IPL, Delhi were considered to have a comparatively weak batting line-up. Filled with youngsters, expectations were low. Surprisingly, it is these young batsmen who have made a mark. Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson made an impression with a fine partnership against Sunrisers Hyderabad, whose pace battery of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ashish Nehra and Mustafizur Rehman has floored the opposition.

Delhi HC issues notice to WFI on Sushil Kumar’s plea for trials; next hearing on May 27 Pant, 18, and Samson, 21, have formed the core of the middle order in the past few games. Karun Nair, 24, too has played his part. Compared to most teams, the Delhi outfit is by far the youngest. While most teams sparingly give opportunities to the young ones, Delhi have included them consistently in the XI and handed them key responsibilities. To their credit, each one of them seems to have carried off the task well. Mentored by Rahul

Dravid, who is also the coach of the India U-19 side, these young cricketers are slowly growing in their prescribed roles. “All the youngsters are doing well and playing the role fantastically well for the team. (They) are learning quickly and that’s the difference,” said Zaheer. The real test though begins now. Delhi are within reach of a place in the playoffs. With three games to follow, the pressure is on with a tight race ensuing to make the mark.

Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) to give a hearing to Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar, who has sought a selection trial to decide who will represent India in the men’s 74 kg freestyle category at Rio Games. “This court directs that in the meantime, the petitioner (Sushil) shall be given a hearing by the President, Vice President, Secretary and coach of respondent

The court’s direction came while hearing a petition filed by Sushil, who was present in the court room, seeking a direction to WFI to conduct a selection trial for selecting the wrestler who will

The counsel appearing for Sushil told the court that the Olympic medallist was injured when a Wrestling World Championships was held last year where another athlete Narsingh Pancham Yadav had won a medal. Gujarat ATS arrests Delhi lawyer in 16-year-old kidnapping case

ATS officials said the lawyer, Shailendra Singh Attarsingh Jaat, has done his LLB and PhD and had been practising law for many years

Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) Monday arrested a lawyer wanted in a 16-year-old kidnapping case in Rajkot from his Rohini residence in the capital. The accused was part a gang led by Asif Reza Khan, his brother Aamir and Aftab Ansari. These men are alleged to be the founding members of Indian Mujahideen (IM) and are suspected to be involved in several terror cases. Ansari had been sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the 2002 attack on

the American Center in Kolkata. ATS officials said the lawyer, Shailendra Singh Attarsingh Jaat, has done his LLB and PhD and had been practising law for many years. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (ATS) KK Patel, Jaat is one of the four accused who had come from Delhi to execute the kidnapping of two businessmen — Bhaskar Parekh and Paresh Shah — in December 2000 in Rajkot. Patel said the kidnappers had demanded Rs 20 crore from the families of both victims, who finally paid Rs 1.4 crore. “The ransom was to be used to fund terror activities in India,” said Patel. He said Jaat had come from Delhi with a vehicle which was used in the kidnapping, for which he allegedly received Rs 3-4 lakh.

For the past few days, an old-age home in southeast Delhi has been playing host to Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson and his wife. After living in the US for the last four decades, Kanubhai Ramdas Gandhi and his wife Dr Shiva Laxmi Gandhi decided to come and live at the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. G P Bhagat, founder of the ashram,

said the couple contacted him two years ago after the ashram was profiled in a prominent Hindi news channel. “They called me and expressed their desire to stay at the ashram. In the first week of May, a woman from Gujarat came to check the place and inquired if the couple could stay here. They arrived on May 8.” The ashram, located in a narrow street in Mohan Estate, is home to 130 elderly men and women.

Bhagat says most of those living at the ashram come from “wealthy family” backgrounds. “The couple told me that the work being done at the ashram is what Mahatma Gandhi had envisaged. I guess that is why they wanted to stay here,” said Bhagat. He added that the couple had faced some problems. “I heard they were mugged in Gujarat. This could be a reason why the decided to come live in Delhi,” said Bhagat.

regarding speculations over change of guard in Gujarat, Chudasama reluctantly replied like

ply. Either party spokesperson or government spokesperson. I am not both.”

IT industry titans on Monday lamented that the Gujarat government does not consult them while taking policy decisions related to this vital industry. They were attending at a seminar on ‘ICT solutions for digital and smart Gujarat’ hosted in Ahmedabad. Speaking in a panel discussion ‘Building Digital & Smart Gujarat – Emerging partnerships and business opportunities in ICT sector’, Kaushik Pandya,

founder-president of Federation of IT Association of Gujarat (FITAG) said, “We would like to be a part of this transformation of ‘Digital Gujarat, Digital India’ in terms of the bottom level support. Unless you involve these kind of small and micro-level enterprises in execution role, I don’t think these kind of challenges can be met very easily in terms of reaching out to the last mile, the local populace….We are there to support this kind of infrastructure

and to be a part of these kinds of understanding and organisation with the government. But unfortunately there is no kind of scope or standing as of now.” Sunil Shah, chairman of Gujarat Innovation Society (GIS) said, “I agree to a large extend with Kaushikbhai that majority of the time, bureaucrats take majority of the decisions in isolation. The challenge of the ICT (industry) is to come out and interact proactively with the citizens issues rather than the industry’s issue. Once you identify what the citizens require, I don’t think there is any limitation for any bureaucrat to stop you.”
