Recovering from a 21-month low, the rupee strengthened 10 paise to 64.16 against the US dollar in early trade today at the Interbank Foreign Exchange on selling of the American currency by exporters and banks. Forex dealers said a higher opening in the domestic equity markets and dollar’s weakness against other currencies overseas supported the rupee. The rupee had lost 10 paise to close at 21-month low of 64.26 against the greenback in yesterday’s trade on sustained demand for the American currency from banks and exporters amid foreign capital outflows. Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex rose 170.86 points, or 0.64 per cent, to 26,857.37 in early trade today.

Typical of those wily kinds with old money, they were low-key and conservative. And then Lalit Modi came along. He got the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well as the International Management Group and subsequently, more worrying acronyms — ED, CBI — would follow. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves in this story of how cricket couldn’t handle money and fame. Those were interesting times, the early days of Modi. The old-timers hated him. He was seen as an upstart. His Twenty20 venture bred mistrust. The maidan cricketers-turned-administrators in safari suits were slowly getting replaced by Armani-clad MBAs. When IPL stakeholders would meet Modi at the new headquarters, Bentleys, Mercedes and Rolls Royces sat in the parking area. The team owners had demands, some old, some new. While asking for passes for their celebrity friends and parking tickets for their VIP friends, they would casually inquire if the stadium had a helipad. Many would fly in from SoBo and be air-dropped at the training ground at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai to see the Rajasthan Royals win IPL 1. Cricket’s good old political takeover, which seemed unshakeably permanent for eternity and beyond, was now threatened by a corporate coup. Power equations, rules, culture and even the BCCI constitution — nothing was untouched by change. Cricket was in a tearing hurry, thanks to the Twenty20 format. Agency | New Delhi Mobile towers in India are likely to grow to over five lakh by 2020 from about four lakh at present due to increase in demand of wireless internet services, a study said. “Towers are expected to grow at 3% CAGR for next five years and the total number of towers is expected to grow to more than 511,000 by financial year 2020, of which 30,000 towers are expected to be only supporting data sites,” Deloitte India report said. The report Indian Tower Industry: The Future is Data estimates that there are about four lakh mobile towers which inlcude only 700 stand-
alone 3G and 4G towers. According to the report, industry tenancy ratio is expected to grow from 1.77 (FY15) to 2.48 by 2020. Tenancy ratio refers to the number of tenants (operators) who have put up their antennae and other active infrastructure on each tower. Overall site tenancies (2G, 3G & 4G all inclusive) are expected to increase to approximately 12.68 lakh by FY20, Deloitte said. A total of 44% of the mobile traffic is expected to be off-loaded to wi-fi and small cells by 2020, where in small cells will contribute to 7% of off-loaded data traffic in most likely scenario, it added.

A 58-year-old man from Gandhinagar got shock of his life when he was stopped by men claiming to be policemen near Sola Bhagwat Vidyapeeth on Sunday and accused him of ‘indecent acts’ with two girls whom he had given lift from Gota Circle. The ‘cops’ threatened to slap a case against him and demanded Rs 10 lakh from him. A deal was then finalized at Rs 5 lakh of which the man was forced to pay Rs 1.4 lakh on the spot and give a cheque for remaining Rs 3.6 lakh. Police have arrested five persons, including a constable, for the racket. Investigators say the gang might be involved in more such cases. According to Sola police, Narhardan Gadhvi, 58, had come to Gota for work on Sunday. While he was driving towards Ahmedabad, two girls sought lift from him from the circle

Thus, the group drove him to Gandhinagar and got Rs 1 lakh from one of his friends. He later withdrew Rs 30,000 from an ATM near Sola. The group forced him to give a cheque for Rs 3.6 lakh as security,” said a Sola police official. Realizing that he was duped, Gadhvi approached Sola police and registered a complaint. “There were two starting points - he had given the phone number of one of the accused and had mentioned that one of the men was in police uniform. On the basis of the clues, DCP Zone I squad and Sola police caught Bharat Chaudhari, a Lok Rakshak Dal (LRD) jawan with Sola police, Khemraj (Bhikha) Goswami, a resident of Gota, and Jitendra Parmar along with two girls in connection with the case,” said an investigator.

Emergency medical assistance for victims of road accidents will now be seconds away, with hundreds of traffic policemen being trained in basic life support training and other techniques. Faisal Siddiqui, general manager of a private hospital in Thaltej, says, “So far we have, imparted BLS training to 650 traffic police personnel and 250 more will be trained to enable them to be the ‘first responders’ in emergency situations.” He
said the objective behind the training is to educate police personnel about steps to be taken in case of an accident or medical emergency. The hospital has also provided emergency kits for traffic police patrolling vehicles. Sharing details on the initiative, Harikrishna Patel, additional CP (traffic), said, “Half the lives lost in road accidents can be saved if first aid is immediately made available to victims.
