“138th Rath yatra”

The Chariot of Lord Jagannath will roll out on the roads on Saturday along a 14-km-route across the city

Ahmedabad gears up for 138th Rath yatra The procession of the Rath Yatra would comprise 18 elephants, 100 trucks, 30 religious congregations, 18 singing troupes, three chariots and seven cars Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Drowned in religious fervour and gaiety, Ahmedabad is all set to witness the 138th edition of Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra, which is coinciding with Eid-ul-Fitr on Saturday, amid tight security arrangements with thousands of personnel pressed into service to ensure smooth conduct of the celebrations. The Chariot of Lord Jagannath will roll out on the roads on Saturday along a 14-km-route across the city, where lakhs of devotees will seek blessings after the yatra begins from the over 400-year old temple in Jamalpur area here. Rathyatra or chariot festival is celebrated by Hindus on the second day of Sukla

Paksha (waxing cycle of moon) in the month of Ashadh. Coincidentally, Eid-Ul-Fitr, which is

celebrated after the end of 30 days’ fasting in the holy month of Ramzan, also falls on Saturday.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is observed as a fasting pe-

remains a baby in diaper,” Singh said as he raked up the alleged scams during the Congress-led UPA rule and controversial land deals involving Gandhi’’s brother-in-law Robert Vadra. Apparently referring to a Lalit Modi tweet, the BJP leader said Gandhi should also speak about the likely “deal of 500-600 crore involving your (Rahul Gandhi) mother’’s sister”. “Rahul Gandhi has spoken about land, remote control and also 56 inch. As I said he

BJP asks Rahul Gandhi to ‘grow out of his diapers’ after he criticises PM Modi Agency | Patna

Stabbed 35 times, teenage girl brutally killed in Delhi for resisting molestation Agency | New Delhi

In a shocking incident of crime against women, a 19-year-old girl was allegedly stabbed to death by two youths in Delhi’s Anand Parbat area on Friday. As per reports, Meenakshi, a Class 11 student, was allegedly stabbed 35 times on face, chest and stomach for resisting eve teasing by Jaiprakash and his brother when she went to market on Thursday, a police officer said. Media reports say that the girl was chased by the men when she ran to save her life and entered a balcony where she was

riod by Muslims, who abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset and culminates in Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations. The city, which is infamous for a history of communal riots, will be witnessing Eid-ul-Fitr and Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra simultaneously after around 30 years and followers of both the religions have pledged to avoid any untoward eventuality during the celebrations. IPS officer Merin Joseph’s Facebook controversy shows society’s sexist stereotypes Agency | Mumbai

When Merin Joesph uploaded a photograph of herself with Malayalam film star Nivin Pauly on Facebook, she probably didn’t expect it to snowball into a debate about protocol and sexism. The Assistant Superintendent of Police under training in Ernakulam Rural District, Kerala uploaded her photo, in full uniform along side the actor on 12 July and it soon went viral with 13,481 likes and 104

to felicitate the students. But apart from popularity, the photo got a lot of flak as well with certain news organisations calling it a breach of protocol and criticising her for posing in her uniform. The photo may have gone viral for a couple of reasons, maybe it was the presence of the actor, maybe it was the fact that she was in unishares. The same photo and 92 shares. Don’t blame the politicians

political interference is really not as much of a problem as it is made out to be. It does provide a good excuse, however, for academics to say why they did not do their work properly, take fair decisions and find ways and means to further the interests of the academy. There are numerous instances of academic leaders, not necessarily from Delhi, having refused to agree to requests that were contrary to the norms. The larger problem is that it is the academic leaders themselves who flout all norms of fairness and merit, to the extent of even protecting the criminal behaviour of colleagues. One of the best-known examples was the case of V.J. Gupta, once a renowned geologist, who had faked the data in his publications for several years. When the fraud was discovered, the first line of defence put forth by academic leaders was that the charges against Gupta were the result of colonial attitudes or the desire to find fault with a renowned Indian academic. When a detailed inquiry held Gupta guilty on all counts, the academic leaders bent backwards in a most visible distortion of the rules to ensure that he would get away with a mere censure. The point to note is not about Gupta’s misdoings but the efforts made by senior colleagues to save his skin, much to the discomfort of the local community. Then there was the case of the editor of a renowned sociology journal, Sociological Bulletin. This professor, after rejecting a paper sent for publication to the journal, plagiarised major portions of it and published it under his own name. When the original author complained, an inquiry committee was duly set up. The committee found the editor guilty of flagrant misconduct and imposed a penalty: he was asked to leave the editorship of the journal, which he did. But the matter was kept a secret from the rest of the academic world. Since his guilt was not taken public note of and he was not publicly shamed, he went on to become the dean of arts of a major university, remained an editorial consultant to other academic journals and rose to head another academic institution. Cases of this kind have been far too numerous all over India where the academic wrongdoer has been allowed to get away with not even a proper slap on the wrist. In none of these instances was there any “political interference”. Academics themselves did whatever wrong was done. The one area where the charge of political interference comes up the most is in appointments. We should, however, not forget that on selection committees, it is the academics themselves who insist vociferously on the appointment of candidates with no proven academic records. One could point to the numerous sons, daughters and in-laws of senior academics who have been “adjusted” in permanent faculty positions by “uncles” and “aunties” in the selection committee despite not having anything to show by way of merit. At the same time, there are enough instances of vice chancellors and professors politely telling off political recommendees that they need to have some merit too for getting a faculty appointment.

QUOTE “He has to grow out of diapers he is wearing. His remarks, behaviour remind us that he remains a baby in diapers,” OF THE - Party secretary Siddharth Nath Singh lashed out at the Congress vice president at a briefing soon after he targeted the Centre and Rajasthan government over a host of issues, including land bill and Lalit Modi DAY scandal, and took a jibe at Modi saying people will reduce his “56-inch chest to 5.6 inches”. Maari review: A Dhanush show in Raees Teaser: Shah Rukh Khan will leave avatar a film that celebrates the anti-social you in awe with his badass notdon only demands, but

Agency | New Delhi Balaji Mohan’s Maari has been written and scripted for Dhanush. Or, so it seems. Son-in-law of Tamil superstar Rajinikanth, Dhanush is often seen in Maari copying the older man’s mannerisms. Watch out the way he smokes the cigarette or flicks it across the air. Watch out the way, he delivers his dialogues. How often have we seen it all in Rajinikanth. Essaying a local rowdy, Maari, Dhanush is indeed cut out for the character. His lean physique and unimpressive looks lend themselves to an antisocial element who lives by demanding his “hafta” from shopkeepers and

generally playing “dada”. When Kajal Aggarwal’s Sridevi sets up a boutique in Maari land -- a lowly Chennai locality -- he demands not just “protection money” but also a share in her profits. “We are partners”, he tells a hapless Sridevi -- who despite all the humiliation and harassment she faces from him, begins to get fond him. Sometimes, it gets pretty difficult to just suspend disbelief in a Tamil movie; one has to perhaps stop thinking at all! With a cop, Vijay Yesudas as Arjun in uniform, challenging Maari on his turf, the pendulum begins to swing wildly from what

is righteous to what is absolutely no no. In a scenario such as this, why would any decent girl gravitate towards Maari and not Arjun. It foxes me the way stories are written in Indian cinema. Yesudas appears too conscious of his dashing good looks to sink into a policeman out to cleanse the rotten area -- where Maari breeds and nurtures pigeons for racing. Huge money is involved, and in some ways, he conveys the impression that he is no less than the rich Arabs whose passion for falcons is well known. But Maari’s faded lungi and vest snatch us out of this fancy picture.

Agency | New Delhi Shah Rukh Khan has got a way about him that just cannot be ignored. Even the ones who do not indulge in the Shah Rukh Khan fandom somehow have to take notice when the ‘King Khan’ says ‘mujhe jangli billiyan bohot pasand hai’, or

rides around in a caravan with a baba, or raises a hockey stick to the crowd, or even when he raises his arms in his signature pose. This time, in the just-out Raees teaser, Shah Rukh, sporting ‘surma’ in his eyes, a ‘taabiz’ around his neck, a generous stubble and an abundance of attitude,

deserves attention. The Raees teaser, will, true to its name, tease Shah Rukh’s fans, confessed and closeted alike, as it looks nothing like Shah Rukh has ever done before. Moving away from the quintessential romantic hero role, Shah Rukh looks like he means ‘business’ in this film. He even says, “Dhande se bada koi dharm nahi hota.” Raees is set in 1980s Gujarat and Shah Rukh plays the role of a bootlegger who lives and works on his own terms. While SRK will be seen in the titular role, the film also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Pakistani actress Mahira Khan (her Bollywood debut) and Farhan Akhtar . The film is directed by Rahul Dholakia and will be released on Eid, 2016. The teaser starts with the sound of beer bottles rolling on the asphalt and ends with Shah Rukh saying, “aa raha hun”. Well, come fast, Shah Rukh. Because we can’t wait.

Mind-Controlled Car Developed by Scientists

Agency | New Delhi

No need to hold the steering wheel or step on the gas, Chinese scientists have now created a car that you can control with nothing more than brainpower. Developed by a research team from the Nankai University in Tianjin, in collaboration with Chinese car maker Great Wall Motor, the new vehicle was presented to the world for the first time on Wednesday, Xinhua reported. The car is controlled via a headset with 16 sensors that send impulses from the user’s brain to the car’s

processing system. Spectators watched as the vehicle moved forward and backward; and was locked and unlocked all with the help of the power of the mind. The sensors capture brain signals and the recognition system analyses them, translates them into driving instructions and sends them to the car’s processor. Duan Feng, associate professor at the university’s computing and control engineering department, said there was still some way to go before the technology can be put into production.

Former Indian batting legend and Rajasthan Royals mentor Rahul Dravid spoke out on Friday about the suspension of the IPL franchise, after a Supreme Court monitored probe. In a press conference, Dravid expressed disappointment at the suspension of Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings. “It is disappointing that actions of one or two people affect so many people. There are some very good people in Rajasthan Royals and Chennai who will be affected,” said Dravid referencing Raj Kundra and Gurunath Meiyappan, who have both been banned for life from any kind of cricketing activity. “People at the bottom of the pyramid are the most affected. Despite strict punishments, some people still want to bring the game into disrepute”, he added. He however, added that it is necessary

to respect the verdict, because ‘it’s by people who know way more about the issue’. Dravid refused to answer specific questions about the verdict. “I have absolutely no clue about match fixing. I have spoken to the Mudgal commission about this”, said Dravid when asked about his knowledge of any match fixing activity. “I wish I had known that the three (RR) players were

doing anything suspicious; I would have dealt with it”, said the former Indian batsman replaying to a question on Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila, who were all banned for life after being convicted of spot fixing. “I think people have to decide if actions of shareholders of a team are a blot on career of the coaches”, he said in response to another question.

Indian youngster Yuki Bhambri says he could not have played better against Jose Statham as he saved India the blushes on day one by winning the second singles in the Asia/Oceania Group I tie. After Somdev Devvarman’s stunning five-set defeat, Yuki drubbed Jose Statham in straight sets to level the tie 1-1. “Initially I was nervous but I tried to stay focussed on my match and just gave it my best. It was a clinical performance. I could not have played any better,” Yuki. after his match. “Getting early breaks in the first set helped as I could play freely. thing about today is that Yuki played a fantastic match and put us on the board, really took to his opponent. Agency | Karachi Squad strength of the Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez was banned from bowling in international cricket for 12 months by the ICC on Friday after he failed an independent assessment of his suspect action, dealing a major blow to the Pakistan cricket team. The assessment

was carried out at the Sri Ramachandra University in Chennai on July 6 and the ICC said that Hafeez’s bowling action was found to be illegal. The off-spinner, since being reported for a second time during the Test series against Sri Lanka, had been expressing confidence that he would clear the test. Hafeez was

Why kin of Muslim half of Cyber experts to monitor social Gujarat’s martyr duo turned Hindu media, check rumour mongering Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

On July 1, Chief Minister Anandiben Patel reached a three-storey, 18th-century watchtower in the Muslim-dominated Old Ahmedabad area of Jamalpur to inaugurate a museum in honour of two Gujarati icons of communal harmony. On the same day in 1946, Vasantrao Hegishte and Rajab Ali Lakhani had staved off hordes of rioters during the annual rath yatra from Jamalpur’s Jagannath Temple — the former protecting Muslims, the latter saving Hindus — with both losing their lives in the fight. Looking on as Patel opened Bandhutva Smarak, housing personal effects, such as sandals, and glasses, and paper clippings and jail records related to the two heroes, were the family members of Hegishte. And the Lakhanis? They had long gone, shifting to the US and Canada after being targeted in subse-

quent riots, scared to even acknowledge their link to Lakhani. Wary of disclosing details of his whereabouts, Rashmin said that among those who stayed back was Lakhani’s younger brother Ramzan Ali — but he too converted after his family was attacked in their home in Naranpura, and changed his name to Ramanlal. Ramanlal was a journal-

ist with a local newspaper, and died three years ago. His wife died a few weeks before the inauguration of the museum. All of this came to light only when the families were tracked down by Ahmedabad-based historian Rizwan Kadri who wanted to invite them for the inauguration of the museum, located 400m away from where Hegishte and

Lakhani were killed — they refused. The museum was conceived by Ahmedabad crime branch to calm tempers and project the “softer and secular” side of police. This year, the rath yatra is scheduled to be held on July 18, and is likely to clash with Eid. Rashmin (76), the son of Rajab Ali’s elder brother Vazir Ali, converted to Hinduism in 1965, married a Hindu from Bhavnagar, and moved to the US. “There were more than three attempts to kill the Lakhanis in the 1969 and 1977 riots, because of which we decided to change,” he said. “Both my children did not know their father was a Muslim till they were 18 and 19 years old,” said Rashmin, adding that he was divorced. Subhan, the eldest son of Ramzan Ali Lakhani alias Ramanlal, lives in Canada and goes by the name of Sam Lakhani, but has not formally converted.

Cyber experts will keep an eye on social media and WhatsApp messages to prevent rumours from triggering panic ahead of the Rath Yatra, which is likely to coincide with Eid on Saturday. To ensure there is no disruption of law and order, the cyber cell of Gujarat Police has been asked to deploy experts at each police control room. I will ensure that social media is not used to spread any rumours, wrong message or message that can create panic or fear.” Over the past few weeks, there have been several rumours about dacoit gangs and

terrorists on the lose, which have kept Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar police on their toes. Several incidents of violence and assault also took place between July 1 and July 7, after which police held counselling sessions in villages. But again on

Father of minor rape victim moves HC for terminating her pregnancy

Father of a 14-year-old rape victim on Thursday moved the Gujarat High Court seeking to terminate her 24-week pregnancy, days after a lower court turned down his request. The HC is likely to deliver its order on the matter on Friday. This is the third such case in Gujarat courts in the past four months. Earlier this month, a sessions court in Ahmedabad allowed a city-based government hospital to terminate the pregnancy of woman suffering with a mental disorder. In April, the High Court had rejected the abortion plea of a Botad rape victim, who eventually gave birth to a boy this month at a government

hospital in Bhavnagar. The fresh plea has been filed by a man on the behalf of his daughter, a Class X student who was allegedly raped four months ago by a doctor at Himmatnagar in Sabarkantha district. Justice Abhilasha Kumari on Thursday heard the matter at length and kept the order reserved. During the arguments, she told the petitioner that the court has sympathy with his daughter, but its “hands are tied” as far as law is concerned. Under the provisions of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, permission for abortion cannot allowed if the pregnancy period exceeds 20 weeks. Justice Kumari said

that the court is fully aware of the sufferings of the victim, but it cannot override the law of the land. According to petitioner’s lawyer Pradip Bhate, the girl’s parents are daily wagers and that victim wants to terminate the pregnancy.

Wednesday, an NRI was severely assaulted in Kheda district by locals who mistook him for a member of a Dafer gang, who are associated with dacoity and loot. Police claim that many of these rumours were circulated on social media either as pranks or to trigger panic and turned ugly in some villages that witnessed, among other things, group clashes, lynching of a mentally unstable man and thrashing of a tribal labourer. Ahmedabad police arrested seven persons for propagating dangerous rumours on WhatsApp. The first four arrests were made on July 5.

Although he is happy that his company is increasing investments in India, he is one among the many worried about being shifted there. Rao says, “When a company you are working with expands its reach, the employees are happy. But will we have to shift there?” The company’s first product development centre was opened in Bengaluru in 1994 and the company is completing 20 years of service here. “India’s major workforce is involved in product development. The new centre too would be on the same lines. However, I would not want to shift from Benglauru now. Gujarat

is a dry state, so alcohol is out of the question; and I believe in the ‘work-hard party-harder’ philosophy. After working the whole week, I love to have my chilled beer in leisure. This luxury would be taken away from me if I am sent there,” says Rao who also put his finger on a much more salubrious climate in Bengaluru that is discouraging them from leaving Bengaluru. “I fear being forced to change my lifestyle!” Another Oracle employee Mikhilesh S, (also name changed), has a strong feeling that mobilisation from Bengaluru might take place.

Ramesh Rao (name changed), 33, has been working at Oracle for the past five years.
