Crashed Indonesian plane was carrying 6.5 billion rupiah Agency | Jayapura

The Indonesian passenger plane that crashed with 54 people on board in Indonesia’s mountainous Papua region was transporting about 6.5 billion rupiah ($470,000) in cash to distribute to poor families in the eastern province. “Four of our personnel were escorting the funds,” said Haryono, the head of Jayapura

post office. “The money was in four bags”, he added. Rescue teams have spotted the wreckage of the plane in the Papua region. There has been no information of any survivors from the crash, which happened in bad weather on Sunday. Transportation Ministry spokesman Julius Barata said there was no indication that the pilot had made a distress call.

Officials said the wreckage was spotted about 12 kilometers (7 miles) from Oksibil, and Henry Bambang Soelistyo,

preparing for the entrance examination, but that did not deter him from studying hard. “I used to get severe headaches during my preparation days and managed to study for a maximum of four to five hours at a stretch. But, I believe that if we study with a lot of concentration and focus even for such a short time period regularly, we can surely score well,” said Garg, whose father, Vijender Kumar, runs a shop of suitcases in Jind. Garg, a student of New Holy Public School in New Delhi’s Uttam Nagar East, says his parents braved a lot of hardship to educate him. “But they never made

me feel the heat. I have been a pampered child. My parents have never denied me of anything I had asked for, even if there was a shortage of money.” “I had obtained a 10 CGPA in Class 10. My merit helped me do my schooling by paying a considerably low tuition fee. I was also offered a scholarship for my medical coaching by a private coaching institute,” said Garg, who scored a 90% in his Class 12 exams.

Haryana’s Vipul Garg, who topped the All India Pre-Medical Test entrance examination 2015, said on Monday he has fulfilled his parents dream and will now strive to become a cardiologist or neurologist. “Without a doubt, it is a big achievement for me,” Garg said. Garg has managed to ace the examination by securing 695 out of 700 marks in the AIPMT retest, the results of which were declared earlier in the day. Seventeen-year-old Garg, who has been undergoing treatment for a problem in his sinuses, said his medication made him drowsy while he was

The ATR42-300 twin turboprop plane was carrying 49 passengers and five crew members on a scheduled 42-minute journey, Barata said. Five children, including two infants, were among the passengers.

Two powerful bomb blasts outside a hugely popular Lord Brahma temple in a crowded business district here today killed at least 27 people, including four foreigners. The twin blasts, which the government believed was aimed at damaging economy and tourism, occurred in a space of minutes around 7 pm (5:30 IST) outside Erawan Shrine dedicated to Lord Brahma in the downtown Chidlom district, creating panic as people fled the place that was spilled with blood. The temple is located on a main road through Bangkok’s commercial hub and is surrounded by three major shopping malls. However, there were no reports of any Indian casualties in the explosions that caused a huge amount of chaos,

with body parts scattered everywhere. It is among Bangkok’s most popular tourist attractions.Police said first an improvised explosive device fastened to a utility pole in front of the temple at the Ratchaprasong intersection detonated which was immediately followed by a motorbike bomb blast, causing two nearby taxis to explode. However, some sources said a bomb was hidden under a roadside bench in front of the Phra Prom (Brahma temple). No group has claimed responsibility for the blast. The Rajprasong intersection has been the centre of political demonstrations in recent years. Thai TV said at least 27 people were killed during the evening rush hour. The nationality of four foreigners killed in the blast is not known yet. The iron fence surrounding the shrine was bent outward by the force of the blast. Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwong

said: “It was a TNT bomb… the people who did it targeted foreigners and to damage tourism and the economy.”Police said the bomb was made of 5 kg of TNT explosive. The explosion had a radius of 40 metres. The Bangkok Post quoted police as saying that at least one more bomb was defused by officers in the same area. “We are in close touch with the authorities concerned. So far there have been no reports of any Indians being injured,” Indian Ambassador to Thailand Harsh Vardhan Shringla. Police, emergency vans and bomb detonation squads rushed to the area where several motorcycles lay mangled. Bomb attacks in Bangkok are extremely rare. In 2012, a series of explosions hit Bangkok, injuring five people. Thai authorities said that the bombings were a botched attempt by Iranian nationals to assassinate Israeli diplomats.

and the Delhi High Court without issuing notices on the appeals of Vikas and Sukhdev, however, agreed to consider the limited aspect relating to enhancement of quantum of sentence of the three convicts by the Delhi High Court. The apex court bench, comprising Justices JS Khehar and Adarsh Kumar Goel, heard senior lawyers including UR Lalit for almost two hours before saying that the High Court order “does not call for” any intervention. It, however, issued notice to the Delhi government on the scope of punishment and sought the reply within six weeks. At the outset, the moment Lalit opened his arguments

saying the three convicts have been awarded life term for one injury on the head of the victim, the bench observed, “in honour killings” such things happen. The bench then referred to the fact that almost of all prosecution witnesses had “resiled” from their statements in the trial court and said, “this shows how much

power you wielded”. It trashed the submission that key prosecution witness Ajay Katara, who had last seen the victim alive in the company of the three accused in a Tata Safari car on the intervening night of February 16-17, 2002 at Hapur Chungi in Ghaziabad, was a “planted and fabricated” witness.

2 / Dt. 18-08-2015, Tuesday Editors’ Picks Tuesday, AUGUST 18, 2015 Public sector banks with Private sector CEOs: Will it work?

After announcing plans to induct private sector professionals as the heads of two major public sector banks (PSBs) — Bank of Baroda and Canara Bank — the finance ministry is now working on a policy to appoint mid-level officers from private banks. Accordingly, the ministry is now set to work with PSBs on a policy to recruit officers at the mid-level taking into account requirements of the lenders and expected vacancies. Of this, about 19,000 officers would retire this year and another 18,000 next year. Hasmukh Adhia, secretary, department of financial services says that it’s the mid-level appointments where banks encounter a shortage of talent. “We are working on a policy to allow lateral hiring at mid level in public sector banks. We have to work it out. It is not easy for us to allow people to join at the middle level.” Adhia said that the ministry will have to work on an appointment criteria to ensure that it is fair and transparent. “The problem is how do we recruit? Because unlike the private sector where the MD can interview and appoint, we have to have a transparent procedure with written tests. So those are the challenges and we will work it out with banks,” he pointed out. While for the post of MD and CEO, the finance ministry had offered a “flexible” pay package, for mid-level appointments, the government is unlikely to be able to match lucrative salaries and perks offered by private banks but could instead offer higher performance bonuses. Bank unions are cleary upset with the move. The All India Bank Employees Union (AIBEA) has opposed this, pointing out that it would not only affect the morale of existing staff but also that the aim of PSBs is different from private banks. “Why should private sector individuals be hired? It will frustrate and demoralise existing workers. Private sector banks only look to make profits while public sector banks work for social banking,” said CH Venkatachalam, general secretary AIBEA. AIBEA, which has also opposed appointment of private sector bankers to head Canara Bank and Bank of Baroda, will also take up the issue at the planned all-India strike on September 2 by all central trade unions and their affiliates. Last Friday, while unveiling the seven point reform agenda for PSBs under the Indradhanush package, the government had announced appointing private sector professionals to run two of its largest banks — Bank of Baroda and Canara Bank. While managing director and CEO of VBHC Value Homes Pvt Ltd P S Jayakumar, a former Citi banker was appointed to head Bank of Baroda, MD and CEO of private sector lender Laxmi Vilas Bank Rakesh Sharma was hired to head Canara Bank. Adhia, however, added that no further private sector appointments would be made for managing directors (MDs) and chief executive officers CEOs in the remaining 16 public sector banks (PSBs).

Agency | New Delhi The apex consumer court on Monday issued notice to Nestle India Limited on a Rs 640-crore suit against it by the Centre for alleged unfair trade practices and other charges pertaining to Maggi noodles and directed the Government to test the samples afresh at accredited labs. A bench of National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission headed by Justice V K Jain admitted the Centre’s plea which also accused the company of false labelling and giving misleading advertisements. Taking note of Bombay High Court’s August 13 judgement quashing the orders of the Indian food regulators banning the nine variants of instant noodles in the country, the bench directed the Centre to test samples afresh by “accredited labs”. “High Court has quashed your (Centre’s) order on the ground that laboratory were not accredited and recognised…. Second, you did not follow correct procedure,” the bench said, adding that “you (Centre) have to satisfy whether you had followed the right procedure” in procuring the reports.

Moeen Ali. Nathan Lyon. Rangana Herath. Over the past year, Indian batsmen - long known to be masters of playing spin bowlers, be it home or abroad - have struggled against them. The most recent capitulation came at the hands of Sri Lanka in the shock 63-run defeat in Galle, masterminded by Herath and ably assisted by the raw but talented Tharindhu Kaushal. Rahul Dravid, one of the best players of spin India has produced, sees there are genuine causes of concern. The India A coach spoke about the importance of footwork, need for hours of practice and the impact of shorter formats on batsmen doing well in Test cricket. “This is a generation of cricketers which has grown

Chelsea’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City a ‘fake’ result: Mourinho up watching and playing T20, probably the first such generation,” Dravid told the Indian Express in an interview. “They are very talented and very skillful players, but they need to negotiate difficult conditions, whether it is spin or pace, seam or swing. It’s an art which needs to be practiced, learnt and valued. I think the values of singles had diminished because most these players play T20.”

Dravid also spoke about the lack of rotation of strike when facing spinners, considering that focus in the shorter formats these days is more often on stopping boundaries, meaning that rotating strike has become easier there. When it comes to Test cricket, the batsmen tend to struggle hence, often holding down one end and building up pressure or getting aggressive too early in the innings.

This is wrong and it’s inconsistent with how we think about serving our community,” Facebook had said in a statement.

Windows 10 updates can disable your pirated games

Agency | Mumbai Torrentors beware, WIndows 10 can apparently disable your pirated games and software. According to Microsoft’s new End User License Agreement (EULA) Windows has the caoability to render any pirated software on your system useless Section 7b of the EULA states, Microsoft Services may “automatically check your version of the software and download software updates or configuration changes, including those that prevent you from accessing the Services, playing counterfeit games, or using unauthorized hardware peripheral devices. You may also be required to update the software to continue using the Services.” That basically means that with every update, which you can’t turn off by the way, Microsoft can disable your pirated software. As for “unauthorized hardware peripheral devices” the company is probably referring to its new Xbox One and 360 controllers, which are compatible with PCs. Whether it only checks that you aren’t using a counterfeit Xbox controller, or it disables other uncertified PC specific controllers is still unclear.

Agency | London Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho termed his team’s 3-0 Premier League defeat at the hand of last season’s runner-ups Manchester City as a “fake” result, even as Man City boss Manuel Pellegrini attributed Sunday’s victory to his players being “hungry and angry” after being eclipsed by Chelsea last season. “What happened last season was maybe a good experience. Now they have

that desire to win every game and the only way to do it is to play consistently for 90 minutes,” the Chilean told reporters after his side stormed to the top of the table. Sergio Aguero looked lean and mean as he found space that did not seem to exist to fire City ahead before halftime and after Chelsea’s attempts at a fightback had been repelled, captain Vincent Kompany and Fernandinho scored late on to em-

phasise City’s superiority. Fernandinho even managed to provoke Chelsea striker Diego Costa to near boiling point with a flying elbow just before halftime, leaving the Spaniard bloodied. City collected four yellow cards in all, two more than Chelsea, as they put down a clear statement of intent. They are now the bookmakers favourites at 11-8 to reclaim the title they won in 2011-12 and 2013-14.

question his place at No. 3 in the batting line-up, especially given his earlier struggles to establish himself in the Test side. It is not a conversation Rohit wishes to have. “I am a very positive person,” Rohit said in his pre-departure media briefing. “And I am hoping that you will ask me some positive questions. I don’t want to look at the past

because the future is very promising.” This was his response when asked why he had failed to carry his recent limited-overs form into Tests. He seemed uneasy talking about what could have been. “I have hardly played 10-11 Tests and they have not been in a stretch. And in those matches too, my spot in the batting line-up hasn’t been fixed,” Rohit said. In 21 Test innings so far, Rohit has batted four times at no.3, once at no.4 (Galle), seven times at no.5, and nine times at no.6. But that doesn’t explain the pre-meditated leave to Dale Steyn in Durban (December 2013). Or his attack on Moeen Ali ten minutes before tea at Southampton last July that led to an easy catch.

Rohit Sharma must continue to bat at No.3 for India

Agency | Colombo India suffered a huge blow after their in-form opener Shikhar Dhawan was on Monday ruled out of the remainder of the cricket Test series against Sri Lanka due to a hairline fracture in his hand. India, who lost the first Test by 63 runs against the islanders, will be playing the second Test at P Sara Oval from Thursday. “The BCCI medical team has confirmed that opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the remaining part of India’s tour of Sri Lanka - 2015. Dhawan had injured his

right hand during the first Test at Galle. He underwent further tests that confirmed a hairline fracture in his hand. He would require four to six weeks to recover from the injury,” a BCCI media release said. Dhawan, who scored a century in the first innings, batted with a swollen knuckle after he dropped a catch standing at the first slip. The batsman was Kaushal Silva and bowler was Varun Aaron. In fact, the injury was the reason that Dhawan could not play his natural game on the fourth morning as he was stuck on his overnight score for

36 balls, not being able to pack a punch in his drives. India have some serious injury issues to deal with at the moment as other opener Murali Vijay is also recuperating from a hamstring injury. While the team management have stated that Vijay is getting better under observation of physio Patrick Farhart, a final call on his fitness will be taken only a day before the second Test starts. The only specialist opener that India has at the moment is KL Rahul while Cheteshwar Pujara also has had the experience of opening for India in a few Test matches.

Before India began day four of the first Test in Galle, Ishant Sharma was spotted taking batting tips from Rohit Sharma in the nets. Since Ishant ended up outscoring Rohit by seven runs as the Indian batting collapsed, the scene acquired a certain irony in hindsight. Rohit’s failures in the first Test have led many to

of the respective world rankings. India had players like Prakash Padukone and Pullela Gopichand, current national chief coach, in the past but they were exceptions at best. Padukone won India’s first World Championships medal, a bronze, way back in 1983 after winning the prestigious All England Championships in 1980, whereas Gopichand won the All England title in 2001. Padukone even rose

to the pinnacle of the sport when he was ranked No. 1 in the world badminton rankings in 1980. But the real rise of Indian badminton in recent years can be credited to the emergence of Saina seven years ago, when as an 18-year-old she started making waves by giving tough competitions to the Chinese shuttlers who literally ruled the sport with an iron grip. Saina brought back memories of Padukone

and Gopichand when she started winning Grand Prixs and Super Series tournaments, of which she won now 16. She came into prominence in 2008 when she reached the quarter-finals at the Beijing Olympics, a first by an Indian in the sport. Earlier that year Sania also became the first to win the BWF World Junior title. Saina then became the at the Indonesian Open World Badminton Chamfirst to win a Super Series in 2009 and also reached pionships in her maiden title when she triumphed the quarter-finals of the attempt that year.

The Gujarat government has issued a show cause notice to suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt after its Home Department received a complaint against him based on an alleged “sex video”. The notice, seeking an explanation within 10 days from Bhatt for allegedly having a “relationship with a woman other than his wife”, was delivered on August 14 after the complaint was received along with a pen drive containing the 11-minute clip. The show cause notice was signed by A V Vala, undersecretary, Home Department, and stated that the forensic science laboratory in Gandhinagar had confirmed that the clipping was authentic and had not undergone any “morphing”.
