Two persons were sentenced to life imprisonment by a court here in a loot and murder case. Additional Sessions Judge Chandrodaya Kumar sentenced Sanjay Kumar Pandey and Aqeel Khan to life imprisonment yesterday. In June 2000, Ejaz Mohammad was shot dead by armed robbers when he was returning home after which his son Azad Ali lodged an FIR, according to the prosecution. Police arrested six persons in this connection while two accused Fakhruddin and Fareed Khan managed to escape and are still absconding.

PM Modi’s military diplomacy India’s simultaneous military exercises this week with the United States and Japan on the one hand and China on the other have drawn some attention. Some analysts view them as India’s delicate military balancing act between Asia’s competing great powers. Others see it as the contemporary expression of India’s enduring tradition of non-alignment. Neither interpretation sounds right. It is probably a mere coincidence that the naval exercises in the Bay of Bengal between India, Japan and the United States and the counter terrorism exercises in the Yunnan province between the Indian and Chinese armies are taking place at the same time. A lot of factors go into scheduling these kinds of exercises. The Ministry of Defence in Delhi does not have the time, inclination or the capacity to time them for some presumed political effect. In contrast, the argument that the simultaneous exercises are an expression of non-alignment seems a lot more credible. Yet, it is difficult to visualize India’s engagement with the U.S. and China in terms of non-alignment. During the Cold War, India’s non-alignment dealt with two rival great powers —U.S. and Soviet Russia — that did not share any frontiers with India. China, in contrast, has a long and disputed border with India. Besides the challenge on the border, Delhi feels threatened by Beijing’s ties with Pakistan and other South Asian neighbours of India. That Beijing and Washington affect India’s security calculus differently is borne out by one simple fact. China sits on territory claimed by India; America does not. To be sure, India continues to be concerned about U.S. ties with Pakistan; but over the last decade Delhi has seen the evolution of a more balanced U.S. approach to India and Pakistan. China, however, remains reluctant to take into account India’s concerns about Pakistan. Some in Delhi see that partnership with America is critical in balancing China’s rapidly rising military power. Beijing’s challenge to U.S. primacy in Asia has complemented this view and formed the basis for a complex dynamic between Delhi, Beijing and Washington. The UPA government was afraid that drawing too close to the U.S. and Japan might provoke China. Because of the problems on the boundary, the UPA government was also reluctant to widen the engagement with Beijing. Modi, in contrast, is not defensive at all. The PM seems to believe that a stronger security partnership with America will enhance India’s national power expand its room for geopolitical manoeuvre with China. At the same time, Modi is also eager to broaden economic ties with Beijing and better manage the conflict on the border.

Agency | New Delhi Experts have raised concerns over the implementation of telecom regulator Trai’s new rules regarding the compensation to consumers for call drops. Under the rule, mobile users will get a compensation of Re 1 for every dropped call from January 1 but it will be limited to a maximum three dropped calls in a day. However, the compensation will be given only if the call drop takes place due to the calling party’s network and not because of the receiving operator’s network. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has said that telecom operators from whose network call is originated will have to compensate customer if the call gets disconnected because of fault in its network. “If a call drop happens because of the network, than compensation has to be given,” Trai Secretary Sudhir Gupta said.

Patidar agitation leader Hardik Patel on Friday threatened to prevent India and South Africa teams from reaching the stadium for the ODI match in Rajkot. He alleged that the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) had sold tickets to BJP workers, who will protest during the match and then blame it on his community. The SCA said tickets sold were accounted for and documented. In a video message, shared on social media, Hardik, convernor of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), alleged ‘irregularities’ in sale of tickets by the cricket association for the ODI match to be played on SCA Stadium in Khanderi village, on the outskirts of the city

Amdavadis seem to be making the most of the ‘sale mania’ kicked off by e-commerce websites from the first day of Navratri this year. The etailers’ shopping extravaganza has started off with a bang with Amdavadis recording 81.5% rise in online trends over the regular online shopping (50.5%), reveals a recent paper by the apex industry body Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham). According to the paper, Ahmedabad ranks third with 78% people flocking to e-commerce sites to lap up discounts. Delhi tops the list with 82% and Mumbai second with 80.5%. Other cities include Bangalore (75%) at fourth and Hyderabad (72.5%) in online shopping. The survey was conducted in Ahmedabad,
Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata. Mobile phone continued to remain the most searched category online followed by apparel, computers and tablets, electronics, home-kitchen appliances, accessories and books. The survey highlights that 35% of regular shoppers are in 18-25 age group, 55% in 26-35, 8% in 3645 and 2% in the age group of 45-60. “India’s e-commerce market was worth about $2.5 billion in 2009, it went up to $6.3 billion in 2011 and to $8 billion in 2015 and is expected to touch whopping $56 billion by 2023,” D S Rawat, secretary general, Assocham. The paper says, in India roughly 4045% of their total sales are being generated by mobile devices and tablets, an increase of 30-35% than the last year and is likely to continue upwards.

In a blow to the ruling BJP, it lost all seats in the Khambha Marketing Yard elections, results of which were declared Friday. The results also indicated that the party was losing its support among the Patidars, who have been demanding OBC status and quota benefits.
