The bill is on hold at Rajbhawan and more than two weeks passed, and the governor is yet to sign it. As the election year is approaching, unresolved reservation is converting into a big issue in the state and the bill on hold, has tested the patience of the CM Baghel. In addition the governor Uikey also asked ten questions to the ruling Congress

government about the relevance of the bill including whether if got challenged in the court the bill will survive or not. Did it meet similar fate as the previous bill having provisions of 58% meet in the court? Why did the data of quantifiable commission on castes not present in Rajbhawan? The straight-forward pricky questions from Rajbhawan irked the CM Baghel and he directly blamed the governor that she becomes puppet and playing in the hands of BJP headquarters.

Nirmala Sitharaman is in her fourth year as finance minister. The change in her approach to budgeting, from the somewhat adventurous beginning in 2019 till now, is notable for a growing realism. The start was a trial by fire, with the numbers going badly wrong. Tax revenue fell short by a sharp 18.4 per cent, partly because the economic slowdown had set in even before Covid came, and partly because midway through the year she announced an unprecedented cut in corporate tax rates — prompted, quite obviously, by the prime minister’s visit a few days later to the US, with his itinerary including meetings with corporate chieftains. The result at year-end was a reported fiscal deficit of 4.6 per cent, up significantly from the originally budgeted 3.4 per cent. The next year was no better, when the full impact of Covid served to shrink GDP. Corporation tax revenue shrank by 17.8 per cent, while collections from goods and services tax (GST) dropped by 8.3 per cent. Interestingly, the finance minister saw opportunity in the bleak situation. She decided that piling on more bad news wouldn’t make much of a difference, and cleaned up her books, thereby ending the wholesale fudging of fiscal-deficit numbers that had been going on. Bringing off-balance sheet borrowing into the government’s books doubled the deficit to a record 9.2 per cent, but confidence in the government’s accounting practices improved. In her third Budget, Ms Sitharaman signalled that she had realised the folly of budgeting over-reach. In contrast to previous years, she projected only modest revenue numbers for 2021-22. The result: Actual collections overshot the original projections by 13.4 per cent. That provided the fiscal cushion for neutralising the impact of non-tax revenue shortfalls and allowed the government to continue with Covid-related handouts like free foodgrain for the poor. The year ended with a deficit that was more or less the same - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara as originally projected.

The CBI has approached the Supreme Court challenging the Bombay High Court order granting bail to former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh in a corruption case. The high court had on December 12 granted bail to the 73-year-old Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader in the case but said the order will be effective after 10 days, as the Central Bureau of Investigation had sought time to challenge it in the apex court. The high court had said except for dismissed police officer Sachin Waze’s statement none recorded by the CBI indicated money was extorted from bar owners in Mumbai at the behest of the politician. In its plea filed in the top court, the probe agency has claimed the high court “committed grave error” while granting bail to Deshmukh irrespective of the serious objections raised by the CBI both on the merits of the case as well

Defending champions France have been affected by a virus that could cause the team’s starting centre-back duo to miss the World Cup final against Argentina on Sunday. Raphael Varane shows mild signs of the virus, and fellow defender Ibrahima Konate has not left his room since feeling ill. Dayot Upamecano, Adrien Rabiot, and Kingsley Coman were all sick at the start of the week and did not practice on Friday. France coach Didier Deschamps claimed the team was taking measures to prevent the virus from spreading after Upamecano and Rabiot missed the semifinal win over Morocco. “In Doha, temperatures have

FIFA announces world series of friendlies in complete revamp of international calendar Agency News : New Delhi

Football’s ruling body FIFA plans a World Series of intercontinental friendly international tournaments in the coming years, said FIFA president Gianni Infantino while speaking to journalists in Doha on Friday. The idea is part of a revision of the international windows which will also see the separate September and October windows merged into one extended window for up to four games from 2025

onwards and will take place in even years involving four teams, each selected from four different confederations. The World Series matches, which would allow teams to gain experience, are to be played in the March window in even years -- when there are no qualifiers for a World Cup or Euros which are also played in those years -- between four teams from different confederations. Like the March window, the June and November international breaks remain in place.

While the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) may take a call on the Asia Cup when the time comes, Raja must first ask the ICC if the world body is confident of hosting the 50-over World Cup in India next year as scheduled. ‘India’s growth as been phenomenol’: Australia women’s cricket team coach Shelley Nitschke heaps praise on India’s progression Agency News : New Delhi

Australia women’s team head coach Shelley Nitschke has heaped praise on India’s progression in the cricketing circuit, saying that the country’s growth has been nothing short of phenomenal, especially in the last five years. India women’s cricket team came firmly under limelight when they finished as runners-up in the 2017 ODI World Cup, and even defeated Australia in the semi-final. They went on to be runners-up in the 2020 T20 World Cup and took the silver medal in the Women’s T20 Cricket event at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games earlier this year. “When I first played against India in the 2005 World Cup (won by Australia), and they made the

final, I think that was sort of the start of a real growth period for them and they just seem to get better and better. I think in the last probably four or five years they’ve had a real acceleration.” We see how aggressive they are with their batting. They’ve got some great young players, they’re athletic in the field, so I think their growth has been phenomenal.

The government has cut windfall tax on crude and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) and has reduced export tax on diesel, according to a government order issued late Thursday night. The tax on domestically produced crude has been slashed to Rs 1,700 per tonne from Rs 4,900, effective Friday, the notification said. The export tax on diesel has been cut to Rs 5 per litre from Rs 8 earlier, while the windfall tax on ATF has been reduced to Rs 1.5 per litre from Rs 5. The reduction in tax rates follows a 14 per cent slump

in global crude oil prices since November. India first imposed windfall profit taxes on July 1, joining a growing number of nations that tax super normal profits of energy companies. At that time, export duties of Rs 6 per litre ($12 per barrel) each were levied on petrol and ATF and Rs 13 a litre ($26 a barrel) on diesel. A Rs 23,250 per tonne ($40 per barrel) windfall profit tax on domestic crude production was also levied. Export tax on petrol has since been scrapped. The tax rates are reviewed every fortnight based on average oil prices in the previous two weeks.

New Sebi benchmark guidelines for Mutual Funds Agency News : New Delhi

Sebi on Friday came out with performance reporting guidelines for portfolio managers, which will clearly distinguish categories of products and bring more transparency for clients by selecting appropriate benchmarks. Reviewing the requirements related to performance reporting and benchmarking by portfolio managers, the regulator has asked them to adopt an additional layer of broadly defined investment “strategies” while managing the clients’ funds. This is in addition to the investment approach (IA) —the documented investment philosophy — adopted by portfolio managers while managing the client funds in order to achieve investment objectives. The new framework, aimed at helping investors in assessing the performance of portfolio managers, would be applicable from April 1. “In addition to the investment approach IA, an

additional layer of broadly defined investment themes called ‘strategies’ shall be adopted by portfolio managers,” the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) said in a circular. These broad strategies would be equity, debt, hybrid and multi-asset. “This is a great move by Sebi to create clear distinct categories of products and more transparency for clients by selecting appropriate benchmarks. This helps in reflecting the true performance of the strategy,” said Siddharth Vora — head of investment strategy and fund manager — PMS, Prabhudas Lilladher. Sebi on Friday put in place a framework for orderly winding down of critical operations and services of clearing corporations (CCs).

Global coal consumption is set to rise to an all-time high in 2022 and is expected to remain at similar levels in the next few years if more vigorous efforts are not made to move to a lowcarbon economy, according to a report from the International Energy Exchange (IEA). IEA in its annual market report said that global coal use is set to rise by 1.2 per cent in 2022, surpassing 8 billion tonnes in a single year and eclipsing the previous high set in 2013. the largest increase in coal demand this year is expected in India (+7 per cent), followed by the European Union (+6 per cent) and China (+0.4 per cent). The report forecasts that global coal consumption will remain flat at this level through 2025 as a decline in demand from mature markets will be offset by

robust demand in emerging Asian economies. IEA said that higher natural gas prices amid the global energy crisis have led to increased reliance on coal for generating power, but slowing economic growth has simultaneously reduced electricity demand and industrial output. IEA said that the world’s three largest coal producers — China, India and Indonesia — will all hit production records in 2022. However, the report said that despite the high prices and comfortable margins for coal producers, there is no sign of surging investment in exportdriven coal projects.

Mukesh Khanna slams Deepika Padukone’s Chitrangda Singh to star opposite outfit in Pathaan’s Besharam Rang song: legendary Italian star Marco Leon‘Next you will bring them without clothes’ ardi in next film Actor Mukesh Khanna, popularly known to play the desi superhero Shaktimaan on Indian television, has joined the bandwagon to slam Deepika Padukone’s outfits in the song ‘Besharam Rang’ from the film ‘Pathaan’. A huge uproar has erupted in the country over Deepika’s sartorial choices in the song, particularly a saffron bikini, which several political leaders claimed that it was aimed at hurting religious sentiments of Hindus. Now, during an Khanna stated that the entire issue is about vulgarity and not about religion. He also criticised the censor board for not objecting to the song. ”I think our film industry has gone haywire. This is a matter of vulgarity, it has nothing to do with any kind of religious problem. The censor board is no Supreme Court. They tell me very prominent people, but can they not see all these attacks on the Hindu religion?” he questioned. He went on to say that the song can affect the minds of the youth and that Deepika deliberately indulged in “provocative dressing”. He said, “Our country is no Spain or Sweden or such a country that allows everything. You dared to bring people in such limited clothing. Next, you will bring them without the clothes!” He added, “The job of the censor board is to ensure that films do not hurt anyone’s personal feelings and beliefs. The censor must not pass such films that instigate or lead the youth astray. This song can mess up the minds of the youth, not mislead them. This is not a song made for the OTT but a film. How could the censor pass it? Did they not see the deliberate provocative dressing?” It all started after Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra called Deepika’s outfit in the song “objectionable” and warned the makers to “correct them” or they will be forced to mull whether to stall the film’s release He also objected to the saffron and green bikinis which Deepika wore in ‘Besharam Rang’. Several Hindu fringe groups have also threatened theatre owners of dire consequences if the film gets screened.
