Come clean on Pakistan boat issue : Congress New Delhi, Congress on Wednesday sought to corner the NDA goverment over the Pakistan terror boat issue and charged that the Defence Ministry had treated the matter casually as the row over it deepened in the wake of remarks by a senior Coast Guard officer contradicting the official version of the incident. Demanding that the government come clean on the issue, Congress General Secretary Ajay Maken told reporters that the contradictory statements suggested that the Defence Ministry, led by Manohar Parrikar, had not handled the matter properly and “treated it casually.” He further said that instead of “threatening” a senior Coast Guard officer, the government should come out with the facts of the matter. Congress was reacting to the statements by Coast Guard DIG BK Loshali contradicting the Defence Ministry’s claim that he had ordered the blowing

up of an intruding Pakistani boat off Porbandar coast on New Year’s night. After the officer today made a U-turn and claimed he was misquoted, English daily Indian Express uploaded a video of the DIG in which he says that he had ordered on December 31 night to “blow up that boat”. “Let me tell you. I hope you remember 31st December night … We blew off that Pakistan… We have blown them off. I was there at Gandhinagar and I told at night, blow the boat off. We don’t want to serve them biryani,” Loshali said at a function in Surat yesterday. The Defence Ministry and Parrikar had said after the operation that the boat had blown up itself after its crew was asked to surrender. But with the Coast Guard officer’s remarks fuelling a row, Congress leader Manish Tewari earlier today asked the Defence Minister to introspect as to what was a bigger sin, blowing up the boat or “lying” to the nation.

Marital rape be made criminal offence - Delhi HC rejects PIL Despite passing a number of laws related to rape and crime against women, the Indian Govt. held back on making marital rape a criminal offense. Turning a blind eye to the problems women face within the walls of their home, wont solve the problem. However the classic argument that govt presents is that a law against marital rape will weaken the traditional family values in India. Should we hold onto those values or let the law take its course even if the offender comes from within the family? The Delhi High Court on Wednesday refused to entertain a PIL challenging a provision in the penal law which does not consider rape as the sexual intercourse of a man with his wife who is a minor noting that a similar matter has been junked by the apex court. A bench headed by Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice RS Endlaw dismissed as withdrawn the plea of an NGO highlighting the exception in Section 375 of the IPC which states that sexual intercourse by a man with his own wife, the wife not being under 15 years of age, is not rape. "Similar matter has been dismissed by the Supreme Court. We don't see anything into this petition," the bench said after which the NGO withdrew its plea. Rit Foundation had submitted that the exception in section 375 was brought by way of the Criminal Law Amendment Act of 2013, which was enacted after the horrific gangrape case of December 16, 2012. In its petition, it had claimed that the exception to Section 375 of the IPC was to the extent that it grants immunity to a husband by raping his own wife, who is above age of 15 years, was unconstitutional. It submitted that the exception was "unconstitutional and violative of the Right to Equality guaranteed to married women under Article 14 of the Constitution as it decriminalises rape when the perpetrator is the lawfully wedded husband of the victim." It had said that even though the law made a distinction between married and unmarried woman in this case, the basis of distinction does not have any rational nexus with the object sought to be achieved by the law, which is to protect women from sexual assault. The petition had also stated that marital rape has been criminalised in almost all major common law jurisdictions throughout the world, including in the US, the UK, South Africa and Canada. The Supreme Court Tuesday refused to entertain a woman's plea to declare marital rape a criminal offence, saying it wasn't possible to order a change in the law for one person. A Delhi-based MNC executive had told the court that her husband repeatedly resorted to sexual violence but she was helpless as marital rape was not a crime in India. "You are espousing a personal cause and not a public cause...This is an individual case," a bench of justice AR Dave and justice R Banumathi said, refusing to take up her plea. The woman had challenged the validity of an exception to Section 375 of the IPC that says sexual intercourse by a man with his wife, who is 15 or above, is not rape even if it is without consent. The provision, the woman said, violated her fundamental right to life and liberty. As the bench was not inclined to entertain the petition, Colin Gonsalves, who represented the woman, chose to withdraw it. "We would move the court again on the issue....may be through a women's organisation," the senior advocate told. The petitioner alleged that she was not only subjected to dowry harassment, but also brutally raped by the husband who pushed torch lights into her, causing grievous injuries.

Hyundai eyes 5 lakh sales mark in the domestic market

Hyundai Motor India is targeting 5 lakh sales milestone in the domestic market in the near future for which it plans to launch a slew of products, including entry into new segments. As part of the plan, the company which sold 4.11 lakh units last year, on Wednesday launched the updated version of its midsized sedan Verna priced up to Rs 12.19 lakh (exshowroom Delhi). "Our aspiration is to achieve the 5 lakh sales mark in the domestic market. The updated Verna would definitely play a significant role in achieving this milestone," Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) senior vice president, sales and marketing, Rakesh

Srivastava told reporters here. Srivastava said the domestic market remains priority for the company but at the same time it would like to retain 40 per cent share of the car exports from the country. Last year, HMIL had sold 4.11 lakh units in the domestic market and exported 2.01 lakh units. Its current production capacity stands at 6.8 lakh units which could be expanded to seven lakh units per annum. "Our focus is to cater to the domestic market first. The market is expected to grow now with the government taking various steps to accelerate economic growth along with factors such as cut in interest rates," Srivastava said.

Google doodles to mark battery inventor Alessandro Volta’s 270th birthday

Google has dedicated it’s doodle to Alessandro Volta’s 270th birthday. Born in 1745 in the town of Como, the Italian physicist was known for the invention of an early form of battery in 1799. He had become a professor of physics in 1774 at Como’s Royal School

before going on to work on the development of the “electrophorus”, a device that produced static electricity. Volta was made a count in 1810 by Napoleon Bonaparte, and he retired in 1819 to his estate in Camnago, where he died in 1827.

Can Indian Space Industry expect a repeat 50% budget increase in 2015

In 2014 the Union Government of India allocated a 50% increased budget to ISRO granting Rs 6,000 crores (US$1.2 billion) planned and Rs 1,238 crores (approx US $ 25.75 million) unplanned. ISRO had a total of Rs 7,238 crores (approximately US$1.3 billion) as compared to the previous year budget allocation. 2014 was a successful year for ISRO with PSLV, GSLV launch vehicles for launching of satellites, Chandrayaan (Moon) probe and the recent wonder of the Mangalayaan or MOM ,the Mars probe, proving the combined efforts of ISRO and the Indian Space industry are on the right track. The encouraging factor is that most of the

missions have been accomplished the first time and on almost shoe-string budgets (Mars probe cost India just US $ 74 million) when compared to worldwide space programs. It is also encouraging not only for ISRO but the Space sector industry involved in the development and manufacturing of the sensitive equipment. International awards have been earned and ISRO has made the country proud of its achievements. ISRO and the Indian Space Sector are proud examples and have given the right impetus to the Prime Minister's 'Made in India' drive by largely using components and technology developed within the country cutting down costs considerably.

World Cup 2015: Before India match, Dale Steyn down with flu

South Africa’s fast bowler Dale Steyn missed training on Wednesday due to flu, but is expected to be fit for the World Cup match against India at the

Melbourne Cricket Ground. The paceman bowled just seven overs in South Africa’s first warm-up match against Sri Lanka and was rested for the second

game against hosts New Zealand. He was suffering from a sore throat and blocked nose during their World Cup opener against Zimbabwe, where he returned with unimpressive figures of one for 64 from nine overs. South Africa is scheduled to play India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday. India have previously played three games against the Porteas in the World Cup but have never won any of them.

World Cup 2015: Sterner South African test lies ahead for Indian attack

Though Team India would be reasonably satisfied with the performance of their bowlers in the World Cup opener against Pakistan on Sunday, sterner tests lie ahead. Next up for India on Sunday would be South Africa, whose batting lineup can send a chill down the spine of any bowling unit. To put things in perspective, captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has cautioned his bowlers that they won't have the luxury of defending a 300-plus score every single time. "Yes, we were able to post 300 this time. But we must realize that if bowling first, we will have

to keep the opposition down to the range of 240260 for the batsmen to have a realistic chance of chasing down that target," Dhoni had said after the victory over Pakistan. Against Pakistan, Mohammed Shami grabbed four wickets. Umesh Yadav and Mohit Sharma bagged two each while R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja also chipped in with a wicket apiece. The performance against Pakistan, however, was an exception. Indian bowling, of late, has been a study in inconsistency. In the tri-series preceding the World Cup, India's bowling attack looked very

unsettled. Stuart Binny started off with the new ball while Axar Patel was the main spinner. To be fair, Dhoni's experiment was due to the injuries suffered by Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja. Ashwin was kept on the sidelines. With every loss, as pressure grew on the Indian captain, he chose to stress on the process. "What is more important right now is the process than the result," was Dhoni's common refrain during the post-match news conferences during the triseries. "We are making an effort to win the matches. But we want to try out players who haven't had much international exposure. We are making an honest effort but at the same time we are executing a plan and in that process we sometimes lose some matches," was his standard reply. It was only in the second warm-up match againstAfghanistan in Adelaide that Dhoni chose to use five frontline bowlers, leaving Binny and Bhuvi out.

World Cup 2015: Real Afghanistan need to stand up, says coach

Afghanistan are at the World Cup to compete for victories and simply did not give a true account of themselves in their defeat to Bangladesh on their tournament debut, coach Andy Moles said on Wednesday. The thumping 105-run loss was a huge disappointment to the Afghans, whose meteoric rise to the top table of international cricket over the last 15 years has been a rare good news story from their war-torn country. After holding Bangladesh to a respectable 267 all out in their 50 overs at Manuka Oval, they lost their first three wickets for three runs in three overs and were finally bowled out for 162. "That isn't a true reflection

of how we play, but in any game of cricket when you're three for three in one and a half overs, not many teams, if any teams come back from that," Moles told a news conference in Canberra. "The boys are very proud in their performance, and they know that they haven't given a fair reflection today. "We're in the shop window here, we haven't disgraced ourselves but we got lost, we just didn't get out of the blocks tonight with the bat, we were in a fog," he added. "They bowled very well and before we knew where we were, we were one-two-three down and just treading water." Cricket was still the subject of a

Taliban ban in Afghanistan when Bangladesh made their World Cup debut in 1999 but Moles said his team had approached the fixture against one of the 10 test-playing nations with high hopes. "We genuinely thought this was a game we could have won tonight," he said. "I still believe that if we'd have applied ourselves better, we would have given a better account of ourselves. "Take nothing away from Bangladesh, they played very well but we didn't hit the heights we expect of ourselves." Asked whether nerves were responsible for the calamitous folding of the top order, Moles said he would be talking to the batsmen about their mental approach to the match. "I really don't think they were up for the fight from ball one," he said. Moles said his players needed to take the defeat "on the chin" and pick themselves up for their next match against Sri Lanka in Dunedin, New Zealand on Sunday.

SPORTS ROUNDUP ICC WORLD CUP-2015 COUNT-DOWN

Duncan Fletcher in charge, Team India's media manager rubbishes rift rumours The Indian team management on Wednesday sought to deny a media report about chief coach Duncan Fletcher being ignored meetings and also not being kept in the loop about team strategy. With Indian team taking a day-off and players being left on their own to relax, there were reports of team's support staff led by Team Director Ravi Shastri having an impromptu meeting at the team hotel Langham with Fletcher not informed about it. "I can confirm that no such meeting was held. There is absolutely no truth that Duncan was not kept in the loop about a meeting of the support staff. I can only term this as figment of imagination," team's media manager DR R N Baba said when specifically

asked about about the rift among support staff. The general notion since Shastri's appointment has been that it's a move by BCCI to clip Fletcher's wings after team's poor overseas record over a period of time. In fact, according to team sources, bowling coach Bharath Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar, apparently went to meet their common friend in the evening during the time when the socalled meeting of support staff without Fletcher was

supposedly held. When contacted a senior BCCI official currently in India, said, "Do you people seriously think that Fletcher needs to be sidelined with these kind of childish tricks". "Fletcher has a contract till the end of the World Cup, which is only a month and half away. We don't think he will seek an extension. So if a man is leaving after the World Cup, do you need to do something like this," the offical said.

ICC World Cup: Captain Elton Chigumbura urges Zimbabwe to be 'ruthless

Zimbabwe took heart from their gutsy display against title contenders South Africa and will try to be "ruthless" against the United Arab Emirates, captain Elton Chigumbura said on Wednesday. Zimbabwe had the Proteas reeling at 83 for four before being put to the sword by a world record fifth-wicket unbroken stand of 256 between David Miller and JP Duminy. They were 214 for three and well set to push on for the final 15 overs in their chase of 340 before losing a flurry of

wickets to be bowled out for 277. "It was a bit of both, a confidence boost the way we played, and obviously it's always disappointing to play the way we did for 90 overs but we didn't manage to finish off the last 10 overs," Chigumbura told reporters in Nelson. "We took a lot out of the game we played and hopefully we can carry on with that form. Playing the first game gave us the opportunity to try and correct where we went wrong from the first one. "The two days that we've

got, we tried to polish that, and yeah, we're now looking forward to the UAE game," he said. "We have to take every game seriously and do the basics right and make sure that when you get into good winning position you are ruthless and win the game." Hamilton Masakadza's form has been another positive for the Zimbabwe side. The 31year-old batsman scored an unbeaten 117 in their warmup victory over Sri Lanka and followed it up with a 80 against South Africa. "The good thing about our team at the moment, everyone is in good nick, so we don't expect just Hamilton to put up a good performance," Chigumbura said. "The rest of the guys in the squad are capable of doing the same job." This will be the first one-day international between the two sides and UAE captain Mohammad Tauqir spelled out his team's ambition in the tournament.

Pakistan Cricket Board moves to quash rumours of unrest in the ranks

The Pakistan Cricket Board has moved to quash rumours of unrest within the team amid allegations several players have fallen out with a coach. Days after reports emerged that eight Pakistani players were fined for breaching curfew, the PCB has categorically refuted reports claiming fielding coach Grant Luden quit his post after a row with

senior players Shahid Afridi, Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Akmal. "The news is absolutely false and that nothing of the sort has happened," the PCB said in a statement released on Wednesday night. That's not entirely right. Luden did inform the PCB chairman and chief executive several days before the World Cup of his intentions to leave in May 2015 due to

"personal reasons", but retracted his resignation after those issues were resolved. It has not been a smooth start to the tournament for Pakistan. Afridi and Shehzad were among eight players fined $300 for returning to their Sydney hotel late before the tournament, a report last week claimed. The PCB has also issued a social media ban on the squad throughout the tournament. Pressure is building on Pakistan after their heavy loss to India on Sunday. Former legend Javed Miandad has already lashed the team and now another hero from the successful 1992 campaign, Wasim Akram, is at odds with the team.

Difficulties like this and financial problems compel them to abandon study half-way.
