National flag to fly atop 207 feet mast in central universities

Central uni. to hoist national flag Agency | Surajkund

Agency | Mumbai

February 19, 2016, Friday

The national flag will fly atop a 207-ft tall flag mast on the campuses of all 46 Central Universities “prominently and proudly” to signify a “strong India”, a resolution adopted at a meeting of their Vice Chancellors with HRD Minister Smriti Irani said today. The first of such flags will be hoisted on the restive JNU campus, officials in the HRD Ministry said. “At a central place in every university, the national flag will be flown prominently and proudly,” the resolution passed at a meeting Irani had with the Vice Chancellors of Cen-

tral universities, said. The move drew a sharp reaction from the Congress which said nationalism doesn’t mean hoisting the flag and singing Vande Mataram and that it should be reflected in one’s belief in the Constitution. CPM leader Brinda Karat also slammed government for the decision. The decision came in the midst of raging row over the arrest of JNU students union president Kanhaiya Kumar on sedition charges for being present at an event on the campus where anti-India slogans were raised. Though the government is facing strident opposition criticism over the

issue, today’s move reflects its resolve to adopt an aggressive posture on it. The proposal for hoisting the national tricolour atop a 207-feet pole was put forward by Irani and unanimously endorsed by all the 46 Vice Chancellors, HRD officials said. She also put forth the proposal for hoisting the first

such flag at JNU, which too was backed by all the VCs, they said. Officials in HRD Ministry said as per the resolution all the central universities, including JNU, will have to fly the tricolor and the decision was taken to “symbolise a strong and united India” in the institutions of higher educa-

tion. Irani had called the meeting of VCs following widespread protest over suicide of dalit scholar of Hyderabad University Rohith Vemula. “Nationalism just doesn’t mean hoisting the flag and singing Vande Mataram. It is about showing your belief in the Constitution, it is about showing respect to the institutions which have made the country a democratic set up,” Congress’ R P N Singh said. The JNU row had become the subject of a massive political fight with opposition coming down hard on the government. The

protests have taken place in many universities including in Jadavpur University in West Bengal. At the meeting several important aspects related to higher education, includ-

ing the implementation of 2012 UGC regulations by varsities for promoting equity and addressing grievances of Scheduled Caste and Schedule Tribe students discussed.

Taking a dig at his rivals for projecting him as anti-farmer, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a new crop insurance scheme named Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme in MP, which, he said, would effectively look into farm-

ers’ needs affected by natural calamities unlike the one that existed during the UPA government. The PM also announced launch of a national agriculture market on Dr BR Ambedkar’s birth anniversary on April 14 to help farmers get adequate prices for the agriculture produce.

The cliche that India is an extremely price conscious market seems to have been proved, yet again! With a smartphone selling at Rs 251 (nearly Rs 300 if you add in the Rs 40 shipping price included), an unknown phone company Ringing Bells has turned into the biggest news maker in the tech and business industry over the last couple of days, and how. From specs offered at an unbelievably low price point and iPhone-like icons to being a re-branded Adcom Ikon 4 smartphone and Make in India project, a lot has already been

said and written about the Freeedom 251. But what still seems baffling is how they will achieve the price point so low for a device that is well speced to be priced a little over a couple of thousands. You don’t even need to be a businessman to do the math. Last night, Ashok Chadha, President, Ringing Bells took to answer-

ing media questions post the launch event and also explained how the company plans to achieve this low price point, and ‘still’ manage to sustain. Firstly, he cleared the air about subsidy by saying there is no government subsidy involved, but the company plans to benefit from economies of scale. The Indian market is at 2 crore

units a month. If you take 30 percent of that, then you achieve economies of scale,” he had said. The Freedom 251 is priced around Rs 250, which means it could get them a cut of estimated Rs 500 on the Rs 2,500 bill of materials. However, selling Rs 2,500 device at Rs 251 would still incur losses in crores, and how does the company plan to tackle that. Somehow, it appears there’s more that needs to be explained.

News Channels: Who is the patriot, and who the anti-national?

What the nation wants and what it gets are two very different things. Who represents the nation and who decides on behalf of over a billion people are entirely separate issues. However, who is an “anti-national” became quite clear in the last five days on Times Now, NewsX and Zee News on the question of the #JNUTraitorTapes, as NewsX called them. Whatever the truth and lies of the videotapes that allegedly show JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and others indulging in seditious “anti-national” activity, coverage of the events on these channels is disturbing because it defined everything within the generalised tag of “anti-national”. That means, if you disagree or even question this narrative, you are also unpatriotic. TV news has become an accessory, wittingly or unwittingly, to the “patriot games”, now playing out in the country. NewsX, Times Now and Zee News repeatedly telecast the #TraitorTapes, which they claim show protests in favour of Afzal Guru at JNU. On NewsX, there were at least six such tapes. You hear slogans — many about J&K — but often the tapes are “inaudible” at critical moments, which NewsX pointed out. Most of the footage is at night, it’s often difficult to identify anyone or actually hear them speak or chant slogans — there is no lip synchronisation of words with individual mouths. For all we know, the soundtrack could be superimposed on the footage. Or it could be authentic. We don’t know. So you shouldn’t jump to conclusions. However, NewsX, Times Now and Zee News (first to report on the JNU protests that led the police to its campus) used the videos as proof of “anti-national” behaviour by Kanhaiya Kumar and others. The videos played out repeatedly under banner headlines of “treason, anti-national”, red circles identifying Kumar as the “traitor” and “anti-national”. Watching the JNU tapes, listening to incessant talk about the “anti-national” would strike an emotive chord. - In such an atmosphere, came the attacks on students and journalists at Delhi’s Patiala House court premises on Monday by lawyers and their supporters who wanted to get their hands on the “anti-nationals”. This attack received live coverage and condemnation on most news channels, but if NewsX and Times Now showed the Patiala House violence on Monday, no one saw it. Why? On Wednesday, “patriotic” lawyers once again attacked journalists, at least one student and even Kanhaiya Kumar at the same venue. Vikramjit Chauhan, one of the lawyers involved in Monday’s attacks, was there too. “People who said ‘Pakistan zindabad’ have been made heroes and we are being called ‘goondas’,” he said to the news agency ANI. Chauhan and others know they are on live TV and use the opportunity to portray themselves as the standard bearers of Indian nationalism. Times Now, however, had changed tack.

The team is taking legal advice to bring back the original characters in avatars that won’t amount

Ravi Shastri, support staff has made a lot of difference to this Indian team: Rohit Sharma Agency | New Delhi

India’s limited-overs opener Rohit Sharma, who has been in sublime form since the start of this new year, has hailed current team director Ravi Shastri and the other support staff for the success of the Indian team. Rohit said, “The support staff and individuals like Ravi Shastri have made a lot of difference to this side. They’ve given us the space to go out there and express ourselves.A lot of credit goes to Sanjay Bangar as well. He’s been doing a lot of work behind the scenes, spending lot of time with batsmen, creating a positive environment.” Rohit is often hailed for his abil-

ity to dispatch short balls over the ropes. The righthander said that it even though it’s pleasing to the eyes of the viewers, a lot of effort goes into doing so. “Yeah, I know. That’s what they keep saying. But a lot of work goes into it. It’s a result of experience and a lot of effort that’s been put in to improve as a batsman. In any sport, nothing comes easy. No mat-

ter how tal ented you are or naturally gifted you are, there’s no substitute to hard work if you got to maintain standards,” the Mumbaikar said. The 28-year-old hit two centuries in what was a magnificent ODI series for him against Australia lately and followed it up with scores of 31, 60 and 52 in the three-match T20I series which India won 3-0.

Difficult to find a place for Ajinkya Rahane: MS Dhoni Agency | New Delhi

With a “no-vacancy” sign plastered on India’s top order and his utility in the middle questioned by his own captain, Ajinkya Rahane suddenly finds his consistency with the bat means very little. The 27-year-old Mumbai batsman has forced his way into the final 15 for next month’s World Twenty20 on home soil but is unlikely to play a major role in the hosts’ bid for a second 20-over World title under Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The left-right combination of Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma have locked up the opening slots, followed by batting mainstay Virat Kohli and limited overs specialist Suresh Raina. An industrious accumulator in a lineup teeming with swashbuckling

power-hitters, Rahane can only hope for a middle order slot but Dhoni, forthright as ever, has virtually dismissed the possibility. Dhoni insists Rahane, as evident from his consistent performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 competition, is at his best as an opener and lacks the muscle power to excel as a lower-order slogger. “When both the openers perform well, it makes life slightly difficult for the skipper,” the India captain told reporters on Tues-

day. “Rahane, at the end of the day, is a fantastic player but you also have to consider the fact that in Twenty20, he is somebody who has done really well when he is opening the batting. “If you look at the team we have got for the Twenty20 World Cup, you find it difficult to find a place for him.” An automatic selection in the Test team, Rahane has a strike rate of 114 in T20 Internationals and is among the rare batsmen who can score freely and still not offend the purists with his shot-making.

Michael Clarke makes return to club cricket with eyes on T20 Agency | Sydney

Agency | New Delhi Google last year started letting Yahoo, Outlook, Hotmail, and users of other email services link their non-Gmail accounts to Gmail. This gave users access to their non-Gmail mails within the Gmail client for Web and mobile. Google on Wednesday announced an expansion of this feature, with Gmailify. It brings two major additions, with the biggest being that users without a Google or Gmail account can now use the Gmail app for Android and Web client. The second, is that features previously limited to the Gmail account of the user will now be accessible even on non-Gmail accounts. To be more specific, users with Yahoo, Outlook, and Hotmail email accounts will get access to Gmail features like spam protection, Inbox organisation (e.g. Priority Inbox), faster search with advanced search operators, and better mail notifications on mobile. The expanded Gmailify access also includes Google Now cards, which means hotel and travel information from non-Gmail accounts will also show up as notifications for Android users.

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke makes his return to cricket this weekend in a Sydney club competition, but with his eyes on some unfinished business in the Twenty20 format. The 34-year-old, who bowed out of the game in August after the disastrous Ashes series in England, will return to his old team Western Suburbs to play Randwick-Petersham from Saturday. One of the outstanding batsmen of his generation, he said he “missed the game”, and now he is free of international demands he wants to have a crack at making his mark in T20s. “I spent the last 13 years staying away from T20 cricket so I could be the best Test and one-day player I could possibly be,” Clarke told Sky News on Thursday. “Now I probably have

more time and opportunity, if I do miss the game and love the game, to be able to focus on that and improve. “I didn’t perform in that format as well as I would have liked, so now I’ve got the time to work on my game in that format.” While Clarke played in 115 Tests and 245 oneday internationals, he only took part in 34 T20 internationals during his firstclass career. T20 cricket can be a big money-spinner for players, with Australian veteran Shane Watson netting a US$1.4 million contract at this month’s Indian

Premier League auction. This week Clarke is looking to help his old club -winless and in last place - take on their stronger neighbouring club Randwick-Petersham in a twoday match. “I know a lot of the boys and they are all good guys, so it’s great to be back here,” he told the Sydney Daily Telegraph. “Wests has always been a great club and we’ve got a lot of younger players coming through now, so like a lot of clubs it’s a bit about rebuilding now and then we’ll be back to our best for sure.

SPORTS ROUNDUP HIL 2016: Rupinder Pal Singh hits form, Delhi make semis Agency | New Delhi

When Delhi Waveriders played their first home game a fortnight ago, coach Cedric de Souza had expressed his happiness about the crowd support at the Shivaji stadium, a change from the earlier home turf at the National stadium. However apart from the supportive crowd, Delhi have not had much to cheer about as, before Wednesday, they had lost three out of four games at home. Making matters worse was the home form of their ace drag flicker Rupinder Pal Singh. He had started the season strongly, scoring six goals in the first five matches. However he had a shocker in his first

home game against UP Wizards on February 1, missing six penalty corners as Delhi lost 4-6. This was followed by another off colour performance in a 5-2 loss against Punjab Warriors a day later. After those two losses, Delhi’s form went downhill as they lost an additional two games, leaving their semi-final hopes in the balance. And so, when Delhi played their last league game on

Wednesday, they were in a do-or-die battle against the Kalinga Lancers. And they needed Rupinder to step up. And step up he did. After some early circle penetrations, Delhi were looking strong to score the first goal but Kalinga’s defence defied them. But 18 minutes after the start of the game, Delhi were awarded a penalty corner and Rupinder was back at his usual position.

al, who will join her for the mixed-doubles event is still a matter of conjecture. “Who knows who is going to be healthy and who won’t be healthy. The most important thing people should know is that the best team should be put forward. Now, I don’t think is the right time to take that call,” Sania told reporters. Ahead of the

Gujarat village bans mobile phones for unmarried women

Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Prime Minister Narendra Modi may be promoting his Digital India drive across the world but a village in his native district of Mehsana in Gujarat has banned mobile phones for unmarried women. In a Khap panchayat-like diktat, Suraj village –100 km from the state’s financial capital of Ahmedabad – decided to fine women Rs 2,100 for using or possessing a mobile phone. The informer gets Rs 200 as reward. “Why do girls need cell phone? Internet is a waste of time and money for a middle-class community like us. Girls should better utilise their time for study and other works,” said Suraj village sarpnach

Devshi Vankar. The only exception to the rule is if a relative wants to talk to a girl, her parents can pass on their phones for conversation. Vankar said the “entire population of 2,500”, comprising various castes, “welcomed the decision”. Suraj village imposed the ban on February 12 but it may spread to other parts of north Gujarat as the politically influential Thakor community initiated

a drive to extend the restriction, with support of other OBC communities such as the Rabari and Vankar. The motivation of the mobile phone ban for women can be traced to an alcohol de-addiction drive by the Thakors mainly aimed at men. As the drive progressed, the community came out with rules and regulations for women’s lifestyle. Community leaders felt just like liquor, the use

of cell phones by unmarried women created a nuisance in society. In January, Ludar in Banaskantha district was the first village to implement such a ban. The community vowed to intensify the drive against alcohol de-addiction as well as cell phones by passing resolutions during meetings being organised in rural parts of the state’s northern belt.’ “Alcohol consumption by men and cell phone use by women create a lot of disturbance in society. Young girls get misguided. It can break families and ruin relationship,” said Raikarnji Thakor, a community leader from north Gujarat. “It (the ban) is the villagers’ idea only,” he added.
