Shabana Azmi says she was never a misfit as a member of Parliament because she always put her point across. The “Neerja” actress was a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha in 1997 and considers the tenure as a huge learning experience. “I was not a misfit in Parliament because I really looked upon my work as a parliamentarian as separate from being a politician because I was nominated and did not have any constituency to,” Azmi said while speaking at the India Today Conclave here.

Agency | New Delhi Bollywood actor Anupam Kher, who has been critical of JNU students in wake of the sedition row, today questioned how can one who “speaks ill” of the country be celebrated as if he was an Olympic medal winner. Kher, who was at JNU campus for screening of his movie “Buddha in a traffic jam” made a reference of JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar saying, “he is out on bail, he hasn’t come back with a medal from

Olympics that he should be accorded such huge welcome.” “One who talks ill of the country, how can he be celebrated as hero? Has he got an Olympic medal? He is out on bail. He is not Sachin, Saina or Hanumanathappa,” he said, without naming Kanhaiya. “He said that he comes from a poor family but my question is what did you contribute to remove their poverty? My father’s salary was Rs 90 when I got my first scholarship of Rs 200 and I had

sent Rs 110 to my family. What did you do,” he asked. The screening of Kher’s film went on amid shouting of slogans by Left-affiliated groups who gave him a thumbs down. Kher had earlier alleged that JNU refused to screen his film considering the present atmosphere at the campus, a charge denied by the university. Further attacking Kanhaiya, Kher asked, “You talk about everything that according to you is wrong in the country. But what did you con-

Delhi CM Kejriwal waits for JNUSU president Kanhaiya in vain Agency | New Delhi

JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar kept chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and senior communist leader D Raja waiting for a meeting at the Delhi secretariat on Thursday evening. Kumar and Raja was scheduled to meet the chief minister at 6pm. Though Raja and his daughter Aparajitha, a student of JNU, reached the secretariat on time, Kumar couldn’t make it. Sources said the student leader’s failure to reach on time for the meeting did not go down well with

Kejriwal. “Raja, despite being a national-level leader, could reach on time but Kanhaiya could not. The CM was upset as he could not meet him and had to leave for prior engagements,” sources said. Sources said Raja and his daughter kept waiting for Kumar till

6.25pm and then went ahead with the meeting without him. They said Aparajitha called up Kumar and made him speak to Kejriwal. “Kumar apologised for his failure to reach the meeting on time. He said he was stuck in a traffic jam,” a government source said.

Why Congress supported suspension of Waris Pathan..?

Congress must take responsibility for its role in the disgraceful suspension from the Maharashtra assembly of Waris Pathan. The Congress decision to support the chanting of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and seek the suspension of AIMIM’s Waris Pathan (MLA) in the Maharashtra state assembly has its roots in vote bank politics. The Congress perceives AIMIM’s growth as the biggest threat to its age old traditional Muslim vote bank. The All India Majlis E-Ittehadul’s politics have veered around to stoking emotive passions which are making inroads into the urban Muslim, the next generation and this has alarmed the Congress. The developments in the Maharashtra assembly could have been defused with the BJP seeking an unconditional apology from Pathan for his decision not to say ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. However, the Congress along with the Shiv Sena took an unusually aggressive posture seeking strict action against Pathan. The ruling BJP, which never misses the opportunity to promote its agenda of cultural nationalism, seized the opportunity to use the incident to its advantage by suspending Pathan for the entire budget session which ends on April 17. The big question is not whether the action was constitutional or justified but who stands to gain what? While the BJP-Sena and AIMIM want to keep the issue alive, the Congress finds itself in a catch-22 situation. On the one hand, it does not want to invite the tag of being anti-national and on the other it cannot be seen to be supporting the AIMIM brand of politics in Maharashtra or the rest of India. A majority of the minorities leaders in the Congress say that the AIMIM gaining political momentum will be detrimental for communal harmony apart from threatening our traditional assured vote bank across country.” It was not surprising then to see Abdul Sattar (Congress, MLA) screaming for the expulsion of Pathan in the state assembly. At present AIMIM has only two MLAs in assembly while the Congress has 41 MLAs. However, the Congress believes it will have to check the AIMIM’s growth to retain and consolidate its own vote share amongst minorities. The Congress now faces the task of redefining its politics and brand of patriotism in the public sphere. Congressmen may choose not to pay attention to Rahul Gandhi, but can Rahul Gandhi afford not to be mindful of his own words in Parliament? If he wants to be taken seriously, he must take note of his partymen’s role in the suspension of Pathan and hold them to account. There are many guilty men in the disgraceful episode in the Maharashtra assembly and the Congress cannot escape the blame.

Actor Hrithik Roshan, who has so far been quiet over the ongoing legal trouble between himself and Kangana Ranaut, on Thursday finally decided to break his silence. He sought to clarify that a purported email address said to be his did not belong to him. Without naming Kangana, he said that he has no connection with the said actress. Kangana Ranaut retaliated with a statement of her own, terming Hrithik’s statement “an effort to get public sympathy”. Anything private that becomes public gives rise to speculation and unnecessary controversies simply because the general public are not privy to the whole truth. Out of respect for every-

one involved, I followed the legal path to resolve the matter in question so as to keep it private. It was a breach of ethics to reveal the contents of a private legal notice. Dignified silence is dignified up to a point, but there comes a time when the silence needs to be broken to protect one’s name, family and image. The crux of the matter is that the mail id hroshan@email.com does NOT belong to me. I had filed a complaint in

this regard with Mumbai Cyber Crime cell on 12 December, 2014 when I learnt of this impersonator communicating with said person. I have absolutely NO CONNECTION with this ID. The entire issue stems from a case of identity theft which has carried over to me. My complaint was reactivated on March 5, 2016 and the crime unit has made headway in tracking this person down. Once that is done, the matter can be laid to rest.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Bajirao Mastani” today picked up maximum technical honours including best costume design at the Times of India Film Awards as the curtains were raised on the second edition of the ceremony here. While ace designer Anju Modi won for her elaborate, lavish costumes in the period drama, the Ranveer-Deepika starrer also took home awards for best art direction and cinematography. “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” won the best story award, which was collected by its lead actress Kareena Kapoor Khan. True to its theme, Remo D’Souza’a “ABCD 2” bagged the best choreography award.

Shoojit Sircar’s sliceof-life father-daughter drama “Piku” picked the award for best screenplay for Juhi Chaturvedi. Irrfan Khan-starrer “Talvar”, based on the Noida double murder case, received the best editing honour. “Tanu Weds Manu Returns” took home the trophy for best dialogue. The awards ceremony, held last evening, was hosted by Manish Paul and Huma Qureshi,

who displayed a comfortable camaraderie and spontaneity. Shah Rukh Khan lent the much needed star power to the otherwise lacklustre awards night. He presented the best story trophy. Ranveer, known for his impromptu stage jigs, made a surprise entry on the stage and did a small recreation of Priyanka and Deepika’s signature moves from song “Pinga” from “Bajirao Mastani”.

er it is Katrina or Anurag (Basu) or myself, all of us are working our hearts out for it.” Well, we are extremely happy to know that, and more so because the much delayed film’s teaser and first look will be out in April.

90-year-old Daddu brings both brothers home. It’s a dysfunctional family which doesn’t think twice before yelling or throwing an angry cookie jar at each other. And no, they don’t do it in jest. In all seriousness, the Kapoor family is sitting on a ticking time bomb. And then enters Tia (Alia Bhatt), the potential trigger. But, are we not looking at a typical Bollywood family film here? Well, here begins the director’s meticulous planning. The writers of the film, Shakun Batra and Ayesha Devitre Dhillon, have done a fabulous job in providing

every major character a chance to flourish. Rahul’s character grows, so does Arjun’s. Tia takes center-stage, but without cutting into someone else’s breathing space. The screenplay keeps gaining momentum. There are times when Batra eases out pressure, but only to keep the safety valve from blowing up. When you meet Rishi Kapoor’s character, you immediately realise his love for theatrics, but you also see a method in his madness. His irrepressible desire to watch porn can’t conceal his longing for a family photo.

Agency | New Delhi Earlier this week, Indian Health Ministry took a significant step by banning more than 350 fixeddose combinations (FDCs) in the country for safety reasons. Recently a new list of 1,200 fixed-dose combinations (FDCs) has been sent for probe by Drug Controller General of India (DGCI) to the panel that banned about 350 drugs last week. Fixed dose combination or FDC drugs contain two or more active pharmaceutical ingredients in fixed proportions in a single pill and also contain codeine which causes lethal damage to brain and psyche. So far about 6,600 FDCs has been reviewed by the Kokate Committee and have classified them under four categories of irrational, require further deliberations, rational and require additional data generation. “Under the irrational category, there were 963 FDCs, out of which 350 have been announced, and the list has been dismantled. We have moved to the ‘require further deliberations’ category, where the final list is expected to come in six months,” an official at the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) was quoted as saying in the report.

SPORTS ROUNDUP FIFA paid former president Sepp Blatter $3.76 million in 2015 Agency | Zurich Football`s ruling body FIFA said it paid disgraced former president Sepp Blatter 3.63 million Swiss francs ($3.8 million) last year, publishing his salary for the first time under new governance regulations. FIFA also announced it lost $122 million in 2015, its first deficit since 2002, attributing that mainly to the costs of battling the worst graft scandal in its history. In particular, FIFA`s legal fees rose from $31.29 million in 2014 to $61.49 million while its reserves dropped from $1.52 billion to $1.34 billion. “The unprecedented events that occurred in 2015 have impacted upon FIFA`s financial results, however the organ-

isation`s healthy reserves have allowed it to weather the storm,” the Swissbased federation said in a statement. Several dozen officials, including former members of FIFA`s executive committee, have been indicted in the United States while Blatter has been banned for six years by the ruling body`s ethics committee. FIFA said Blatter`s former secretary general Jerome Valcke, banned for

12 years, was paid 2.12 million Swiss francs last year. The aggregate remuneration of key management personnel was $27.9 million. Blatter had been FIFA president since 1998 and his salary had long been the subject of speculation. It was finally published on Thursday under new rules which were passed in February in an attempt to make FIFA more transparent.

Agency | New Delhi India has gathered the most bounty since the inception of Facebook’s bug (a flaw in the site’s security) hunting contest in 2011 according to a report. Facebook has estimated to have made payments worth Rs 4.84 crore to Indian hackers who have found loopholes in Facebook’s products’ security. According to a post by Adam Ruddermann from Facebook’s security team, “India has long topped the list of 127 countries whose researchers contribute to our bug bounty program. It also holds the top position for the country receiving the most bounties paid.” But Indian hackers aren’t just doing well in terms of quantity, Facebook says that they’re receiving increasingly high impact bugs from Indian bug hunters. The bounty a hacker gets paid varies based on the harm possible form that bug. As Ruddermann’s post explains, “potential impact of the bug, what could possibly go wrong, and who would be affected.”

case in which the complainant had sought a hearing, and other orders of the Supreme Court, Shahi argued that arrest warrant and bail proceedings were trial. Therefore, he said, original complainant should be allowed to make oral submissions. Shahi also expressed reservations over the ongoing investigation in the case and capacity

of the prosecution. “There are media reports that PSI Maru, who is an accused, is being made a witness in the case. The original complainant can throw light light on the personal behaviour of the accused whereas the prosecutor will rely mainly on investigation papers. If the complainant is not heard, the process of turning an accused into a witness will gain momentum as two of the accused are policemen and police have no records of the victim having been brought to the police post. The one who comes to court to assist the process of justice should be heard,” Shahi submitted.
