Two policemen arrested for teenager's death Relatives of teenage student mourn over his body in Narbal in the outskirts of Srinagar, during firing in Kashmir's Narbal Agency : Srinagar Two policemen were arrested in Kashmir after they allegedly fired and killed a teenager in breach of protocol on Saturday, even as tension ran high in the valley on the second day of protests against the arrest of separatist leader Masarat Alam. The family of the class 9 student, identified as Suhail Ahmad Bhat, claimed that a police team chased the teenager into a lane and shot him at close range. Late on Saturday evening, director general of police K Rajindra said the two arrested policemen -- an assistant superintendent of police and the other a constable -- are from Jammu and Kashmir police. The teenager was killed in the in the Narbal area of north Kashmir where protesters pelted stones on security forces

during a shutdown called by hardline separatist Syed Ali Shah Geelani against the arrest of Alam for allegedly hoisting a Pakistani flag at a Srinagar rally on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, police expressed regret at the death of the boy and also registered a murder case to soothe frayed tempers

across the valley. The DGP also said the “incident is being investigated and action would be taken against those guilty”. “We have registered a murder case and are investigating the matter. We admit SOP was violated and want to assure people that we have zero tolerance for such incidents and those re-

sponsible would be punished,” he said. Police said the security forces had violated the standard operating procedure (SOP) that mandates personnel should use non-lethal weapons for crowd control. The SOP restrains security forces from using live ammunition against protestors. The state

Congress launches 'Zameen Wapsi' website to counter 'misinformation' on land bill Agency : New Delhi Taking the battle on the land bill issue to social media, Congress on Saturday launched a 'Zameen Wapsi' website on the eve of its farmers' rally which is expected to see the first major attack on the government by Rahul Gandhi after his return from leave of absence. The bilingual website 'www.zameenwapsi.com' has been started as the Narendra Modi government was resorting to a "bundle of lies" on the issue to mislead people, party leader Jairam Ramesh said after launching it. Congress leaders said that the need for the website which is both in Hindi and English arose as the government was running a systematic campaign of

"misinformation" on land acquisition ordinance 2015. "No meaningful information is available on the impact of the law or the reasoning behind it on the website of the Ministry of Rural Development either. In today's day and age, this is simply not acceptable", they said. Ramesh said that the objec-

tive of the new website launched by the party was manifold. The first was to provide a data base of all the existing laws on the subject of land acquisition. Party General Secretary Digvijay Singh, who is the convenor of Sunday's rally, dared the government for an open debate on the land

acquisition issue. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari say that they are ready for a debate. If that was the case why did they bring the ordinance. Gadkari talks of debate in such a way as if he was throwing a challenge. I as well as Jairam Ramesh are ready for such a debate wherever they like," said Singh. Ramesh said the website will serve as a medium to farmers in rural and urban areas for placing their views and problems. "Congress will try to take their issues to the government," he said, adding that the website, which is to be updated daily will provide all related information on the issue of land acquisition.

It should always be ‘my way’ Reliance to restart all fuel on the internet highway pump outlets by March 2016 Agency : New Delhi Last summer, while a debate over net neutrality was on in the US, in his very funny news satire show, Last Week Tonight, the comedian John Oliver used a typically risqué example to explain what a non-neutral Internet could do to small web-based entrepreneurs and startups. The implication: if the Internet didn’t provide equal access to all sites, ‘Nutflix’ or any other startup trying to take on an established giant could come a crop-

per. In simplistic terms, a non-neutral Internet means this: a) That subscribers such as you and I may no longer have unfettered access to anything that we may want to read, listen to, watch or buy on the Internet unless we paid telcos additional charges for it; and b) That content or service providers on the Internet may also have to pay more if they wanted the same telcos to offer preferential access to their websites. But things are not as simple as that.

Agency : MUMBAI Reliance Industries Ltd plans to restart its entire 1,400 retail fuel pump outlets in fiscal year ending March 2016, a report on the company website shows. The stations were closed in 2008 when global oil prices urged towards $150 a barrel and the government's subsidy to state fuel retailers knocked privately-owned retailers out of the market. Over 320 fuel outlets have already been restarted, a presentation on the website showed.

Reliance took a significant share away from the state companies in 2006. The top three state refiners, Indian Oil Corp, Bharat Petroleum Corp and Hindustan Petroleum Corp, between them sell nearly all of petrol and diesel consumed annually in India. This story has not been edited by Firstpost staff and is generated by auto-feed.

government has also ordered a magisterial probe into the killing of the youth. In a statement, police said, “We regret the unfortunate incident and extend our sympathies to the bereaved family.” The victim’s family said a police party chased Suhail Ahmad Bhat into a lane and shot him at close range. This was the second incident within a week of action by security forces raising questions. Earlier this week, a youngster named Khalid Wani was killed in an en-

counter between the army and militants. Wani was the brother of an active militant named Burhan, who had gone to meet him with three more youngsters. Massive protests erupted across the Kashmir Valley on Friday after Alam was arrested on sedition charges, and demonstrators burnt the national flag and fought pitched battles with security forces. Around two dozen people were injured in clashes. Alam, arrested for leading dozens who waved Paki-

stani flags during a rally organised by Geelani, was remanded in police custody for seven days by a court in Budgam on Friday. He was arrested from his home in Habbakadal area of Srinagar on Friday morning, apparently after pressure from the Union home affairs ministry. Geelani and moderate Hurriyat faction chief Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who led a protest in Srinagar on Friday against the alleged killing of a youngster in south Kashmir's Tral, were placed under house arrest. Geelani called a strike across the Kashmir Valley to protest the alleged killings and police action against protesters. Geelani also condemned the role of the media and claimed their coverage was partial.

Islamic State claim responsibility for Jalalabad bomb in first Afghanistan attack Agency : Jalalabad A suicide bomber has killed 33 people queuing outside a bank in Jalalabad in what is thought to be the first terrorist attack in Afghanistan carried out by Islamic State. Government employees were targeted in Saturday's attack - the worst in Afghanistan since November which was thought to have been carried out by a suicide bomber on a bicycle or motorbike. Another blast took place near a shrine and municipality buildings, and bomb disposal experts detonated a third explosive device. Smoke billowed from the building and windows were shattered in the blast, which left people lying in pools of blood and body parts scattered across the ground. Dr Najeebullah Kamawal, head of the provincial hospital, said that over 100 people were in-

jured in the bomb – among them many children. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that his group was not behind the "evil" attack. Ashraf Ghani, the president of Afghanistan, condemned the attack and said Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) had claimed responsibility. "Carrying out terrorist attacks in cities and public places are the most cowardly acts of terror by terrorists targeting innocent civilians," he said, on a visit to northeastern Badakhshan

province. "Who claimed responsibility for the horrific attack? The Taliban did not claim responsibility for the attack, Daesh (Isil) claimed responsibility for the attack." Last month Mr Ghani had used a visit to the White House to announce that Isil had already sent "advance guards" to his country, and warn of impending attacks. An Isil spokesperson, Shahidullah Shahid, claimed responsibility online, and identified the suicide bomber as Abu Muhammed Khurasani.

Dear Smriti Irani, stonewalling Arnab Goswami is not a good defence Union Minister for Human Resources Development Smriti Irani had a simple explanation for why there are so many reports against her in the media; she makes for a good news copy. The minister who appeared in her first interview after making the cover of the Outlook magazine was at her argumentative best and reiterated multiple times that she wouldn't slip into victim mode. However, she said she does believe that she's being targeted because people think she's a 'chit of a girl' and hasn't really earned her position. "I might be witnessing the 'chit of a girl' syndrome...The attack doesn't make sense to me," Irani said, during the course of the interview with Arnab Goswami. She claimed that many of the controversies she had been dragged into didn't deserve to make headlines. "I did ask a journalist 'Why is this happening?'. He said that 'your problem is that you keep your head high'," Irani said. Saying that she was a 'tough nut to crack', Irani said,"Irrespective of the jibes and attacks I will finish the job to the best of my ability." The minister refuted the allegations that she had raised the controversy over a CCTV camera directed at the changing room of a Fabindia store in Goa after being left out of the BJP's national executive. "I cannot wait for the convenience to report a crime," she said, adding later, "No woman would want to be violated to make national headlines." The minister also denied that her party had abandoned her at any point or that she stood isolated. "On every step of the way my party, my seniors have been with me... My party stood up, party leaders across party lines stood up for me," Irani said, when asked about the controversy over a comment made by Sharad Yadav in the Rajya Sabha. Yadav during the course of a debate had told her "We know what you are." However, he later retracted his statement. "I am no abla naari. I can't go to the media to tell them how my party defended me," Irani said. Despite reports suggesting that many bureaucrats have left her ministry due to their inability to work with her, Irani denied it and said that most of them who had moved out had done so voluntarily or because they had been directed to. "Hundreds of bureaucrats change ministries...I just make for a good copy," she said. She denied she had ever been high handed and in her defence cited the fact that her behaviour had been witnessed by activists across the country. "If there was any problem with my behaviour why hasn't it come up till now?" she said. But she did have some explanation for why some people may not like her. "Possibly that is what is most annoying about me...that I am completely forthright," Irani said. The minister rebuffed all suggestions that RSS-affiliated individuals have been appointed to head various educational institutes only during her tenure, pointing out that they had worked under Congress ministers and governments more than once in the past. She also argued that she wasn't on the selection panels of the institutions that picked the individuals to head them.

On Mr X release, Vikram Bhatt hints Emraan Comfortable in all genres but people Hashmi reputation as serial kisser set may end love my romances: Mani Ratnam

Agency, Mumbai, 18 Vikram Bhatt started making films way back in 1992. After a modest debut with Pooja Bhatt and Rahul Roy starrer Jaanam. With a career that has seen lows and highs, he went on to deliver biggest horror film of all times, Raaz 3. Three years after the film’s release, he returns with Bhatt brothers and Emraan Hashmi for Mr X. We get into a tete-a-tete. I think Emraan has reinvented himself with Mr X. We all need to do that. I had a spate of horror films and

honestly, I am tired of that. My last horror film was Raaz 3. Creature was not really a horror film per se. Now Mr X is a film about an invisible man. Guess what, playing safe is the new risky today. If you do the same thing again, you won’t succeed. I made horror films, then made a 3D film (Haunted), then made a 3D film with stars (Raaz 3) – ab aur kitna karoonga iss space mein? Same way it works for Emraan Hashmi. How many heroines will he kiss? How many times would he

kiss? He is not young anymore, there are younger stars. You need to reinvent yourself. Bhatt saab is not my friend but philosopher, guide and guru. I discuss a film’s plot and structure with him. We debate and argue. He has a way to challenge me what is best. Once the structure and emotional story is in place, it is much easier to get going. That was the case with Mr X too. It took time to crack the idea and once that was done, it was a matter of putting scenes together.

In a recent interaction with the media at an event, the outspoken Rakhi detested her comparison with adult film star-turnedBollywood actress Sunny Leone. She said that she can be compared to the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Madonna, but not Sunny Leone. "Please don't compare me with Sunny Leone because I have achieved (my popularity) by dancing, performing, doing reality shows and also by winning hearts of the audiences. I haven't done any adult film or anything else to achieve this. I hope you all understand," said Rakhi.

Agency, New Delhi, 18 At a time when several innovative ideas are being

Agency, Mumbai, 18 Filmmaker Mani Ratnam, believes that it's possible to experiment within the confines of mainstream cinema without being influenced by the number game. "Within the mainstream cinema, I feel you can experiment and make sensible films. It's possible to tell a story with characters and emotions which are real, genuine, and which need not be over the top," he says. "For a filmmaker, whether the film is liked, understood or appreciated counts as much as the moolah. I believe the intrinsic value of a film too matters to its creator," he adds. Ratnam says his Tamil film, OK Kanmani, which released on Friday, is an experiment within mainstream cinema.

"It's an urban love story. It deals with the way we look at life and relationships at this point in time. The story is set in Mumbai, and when you watch the film, you understand it's about people away from home who become independent of the rules and regulations of a family," he shares. "It will be a contemporary film on relationships," he says. Over the years, he has earned the title 'king of romance', but he says he really isn't a hardcore romantic. "Whatever film you do, even if it's a children's film, you do with the same amount of sincerity. It doesn't matter which genre you're working in, you try to find an honest relationship within that space, and say if it's the romance genre, within that you have to find

a story and characters that resonate with an audience," he adds. "I think the audience take back and retain only the romance portion from my movies. People assume I'm more comfortable with this genre. But, I think I'm uncomfortable with all the genres because each one is a struggle," he says. But has his interpretation of romance changed with time? "I'm just reflecting what I think is happening around me. I can understand and see how people in relationships are behaving. I'm looking at it from close quarters. The change has been happening and neither you nor I can stop it. And that change, at some point, has to get reflected in some kind of art form," he says.

Scientists discover how Earth was formed Agency, Washington, 18 Scientists have found that our planet was formed much like asteroids, by cosmic ocean of millimetre-sized particles that orbited the sun. According to a new study led by Lund University in Sweden, fragments of asteroids regularly land on Earth as meteorites. It comprises millimetre-sized round stones, known as chondrules. These small particles are believed to be the original building blocks of the solar system. Dr Anders Johansen, an astronomy researcher at Lund University said that the chondrules were of exactly the right size to be slowed down by the gas that orbited the young sun, and they could then be captured by the asteroids' "gravity." Co-author Mordecai-Mark Mac Low added that this caused them to fall down and accumulate like sand piling up in a sandstorm.

The research community had previously believed that the Earth was formed through collisions between protoplanets, of the size of Mars, over a period of 100 million years. However, the researchers have not yet understood how the protoplanets themselves were formed. Martin Bizzarro, an expert on chondrules from Copenhagen University and co-author of the paper, said that the study showed that

protoplanets may have formed very quickly from asteroids, by capturing chondrules in the same way as the asteroids did. The researchers' theory is supported by studies of meteorites from Mars. These studies have previously shown that Mars was formed over a period of only 1–3 million years, which is within the same time span as the researchers have obtained in the computer simulation.

The new ITR forms, this time, also feature a new column to include the Aadhaar number of the assessee.

All-round Duminy steers Delhi Daredevils to a thrilling win Agency : Visakhapatnam Skipper JP Duminy led from the front with a brilliant all-round display as Delhi Daredevils pipped Sunrisers Hyderabad by four runs in a thrilling Indian Premier League (IPL) match in Visakhapatnam on Saturday. Duminy first smashed 54 off 41 balls as the Daredevils scored a decent 167 for four and then scalped four wickets as the visitors kept their nerves in the crucial stages of the nailbiting contest to restrict the Sunrisers to 163 for eight and record their second successive win at the ACAVDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam. Needing just 10 runs off the last over with Ashish Reddy and Karn Sharma at the crease, Nathan Coulter-Nile got the former run-out in the second ball of the over. Two balls later, with Hyderabad needing seven runs from two deliveries,

Karn went for a huge hit towards the point boundary but fielder Mayank Agarwal went back to the edge of the rope, leapt up and effected a goalkeeperlike save as he parried the ball back in play saving what looked like a sureshot six. Mayank's superb save made all the difference in the end and the last ball of the match resulted in Sharma getting out, handing Delhi their second consecutive win. Earlier, Delhi Daredevils managed to get on board a competitive score, thanks to fearless batting by young Shreyas Iyer (60 off 40 balls) and Duminy (54) after electing to bat on a difficult pitch at the ACA-VDCA Stadium. In reply, the Sunrisers seemed to be cruising at 50 for no loss in just six overs, but Duminy changed the equation, grabbing four for 17 to guide his team to victory.

Is it time to take Sir Jadeja's knighthood away? Agency, New Delhi, 18 Ravindra Jadeja's value as an allrounder is slowly diminishing. In 2015, he has scored a total of 79 runs in eight innings (DNB in four innings) at an incredibly poor average of 9.88. These matches include the World Cup and the Indian Premier League (IPL) so far. But let's give him some leeway — after all, we didn't confer on him a knighthood out of adulation for no reason. Let's extend the sample size of his batting till the start of the England tour last year and to all formats. In 16 innings since July 2014, Jadeja has scored 334 runs at an average of 20.88. That's only half the story though. Since July 2014, he has taken just 33 wickets in four Tests, 18 ODIs, one T20 international and three IPL matches. It is just unfathomable that MS Dhoni still sees him as a vital cog in India and CSK's XI. A likeness for a player can only be justified by performances — but Jadeja hasn't been justifying his captain's favouritism for a long time. And when top players perform so badly, the criticism and dissection of their per-

formances is severe. Jadeja has come to a level where his ever action on the field is looked at through a magnifying glass. It's much like what Fernando Torres went through after his move to Chelsea — his every touch, every pass, every shot and every run was discussed at great lengths before the football world finally accepted the fact that he was no longer the player they were used to seeing in his Liverpool and Atletico Madrid days. One could argue that Jadeja is not suited to foreign conditions — where pitches don't offer him the grip and spin like in the subcontinent. But he has carried his poor World Cup form into the IPL. Jadeja has played all three matches in the tournament so far — and he

doesn't have a single wicket. He was not even asked to bowl against Delhi Daredevils — and when he was given an over against Sunrisers Hyderabad, he went for 17 runs. Against Mumbai Indians — a match in which CSK comfortably chased down a target of 184 — Jadeja went for 49 runs in four overs. Again, no wicket. Even with the bat, he has contributed only 17 runs. He was run-out for a duck against Sunrisers and was not required against MI. Even if we take the blame off him for the run out and not being needed against Mumbai, his recent form still does not merit a place in the playing XI. Dhoni may also be realising this. We've not seen him throw Jadeja into the deep end in a long time.

TVS Motors CMD rates Modi govt high on transparency Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad The Narendra Modi-led government received appreciation from TVS Motors Ltd Chairman and Managing Director Venu Srinivasan, who lauded it for “its transparency in conducting coal and spectrum auctions”. “I can give many instances (about the NDA government). For example, with transparency coming in and the entire solution for clearances, it is much easier now.” “The coal auction showed the world that India is transparent. The 2G and 3G auction have shown that India is transparent. A significant deal of defence aircraft (Rafale’s purchase in France) was done. Defence was in a very bad condition,” Srinivasan said. “I think a lot of action is in the pipeline. I think it would be fair to our Prime Minister and the government to give them a full two years to mend eight years of slide before you judge them,” Venugopal said.

“The whole world says India is the best story. It brought confidence into global economic institutions due to the right steps taken with transparency,” he noted. “This is the first full Budget of this government. The last budget was practically like a vote-on-account. I think the government is going the right way, and a year from now, a lot of people would have confidence in the government,” he hoped. Srinivasan spoke to reporters today on the sidelines of the Tamil Nadu government’s road show in the city for its forthcoming investors’ meet. “The country’s GDP growth for the next year would be at around 7.6-7.7 per cent while a year later, it would achieve 8 per cent,” he predicted. He painted a grim picture of the rural economy, which is stressed due to unseasonal rains. “The support price for grains and unseasonal rains are the two major factors behind stress in the rural

economy,” he pointed out. He saw a likely slower growth in two-wheeler sales compared with the last year because of the troubled rural economy.

nificent garden called Fatehwadi, to mark his victory over Gujarat, four kilometres from Sarkhej Roza. Today, it lies like a dumpyard with neither the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and nor the state archaeology department taking ownership. A welter of dusty robes, overgrown weeds and briars, electrical wires precariously hanging overhead and glass pieces strewn on the quivering parapet even as a stray dog enjoys its nap. In 1618, Mughal emperor Jahangir praised this majestic structure, saying, "There's no garden like Fatehwadi in the whole of Gujarat." Fatehwadi has witnessed

Agency, Bhuj, 18 Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel today started two pumping stations at Nani-Hamirpur and Manjuvas in Rapar taluka built at a cost of Rs.567crore to provide 78,000litres of water to the KutchVagad region. Later addressing a huge public gathering at Fatehgadh, she described the Narmada Kutch Branch Canal-based project to bring waters hundreds of kilometers away from the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) dam site at Kevadia colony near Madhya Pradesh border as a fine example of 21st century engineering feat for a water revolution of sorts. Mrs. Patel said the project aims at lifting water by about 20-storey (60 metres) from the level of the SSP dam. Besides providing tap water to houses in the region in future, she said, it is likely to irrigate farmlands to quadruple farm production. She recalled that the then Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of this

project in 2011 and it was completed in four years. The project is sure to change the face of Kutch. The people living in arid regions know the importance of water all the more acutely. She hoped the people would make judicious use of scarce water. The Chief Minister thanked the people living along the Narmada canal network for voluntarily surrendering their land for development works of state and national importance. She wondered as to why the people making hue and cry over the Modi Government’s Land Acquisition Bill at the Centre. Minister of State Tarachand Chheda, BJP District President and MLA Pankaj Mehta hailed the Gujarat’s first woman chief minister Anandiben Patel’s farsighted planning to provide Narmada waters to water starved Kutch region. Narmada Nigam Chairman welcomed all. Others present on the occasion included Member of Parliament Vinodbhai Chavda, MLAs of the district and Directors of the Narmada Nigam.

Gujarat’s mandatory voting law is unconstitutional: Congress Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

Opposition Congress has written to the Gujarat government-appointed committee that the state law providing for mandatory voting is unconstitutional and unclear, and it should not be enforced. Governor O P Kohli gave assent to the Gujarat Local Authorities Laws (Amendment) Bill 2009 in November 2014. It makes it mandatory to vote in the elections to the local bodies, apart from reserving half the seats for women. “The bill has been moved in a hurry without inviting any discourse with intellectuals, experts or social activists. This bill is violative of the right to freedom under the article 19 (1) (a) as

World Heritage Day: Rahim’s legacy in ruins Who has not read Rahim ke dohe in primary school — popularly read after sufi saint Kabir. Abdur Rahim Khan-i-Khanan often referred to himself as 'Rahiman' in his own 'dohas' (couplets). A Mughal general, Rahim even wrote poetry dedicated to Lord Krishna. Rahim conquered Ahmedabad and governed much of what is present day Gujarat for more than a decade after defeating Gujarat sultan Muzaffar Shah III — between 1583 and 1592 AD — and was among emperor Akbar's Navratnas. Rahim's pen, as also his sword, were mighty. This famous sufi poet built a mag-

massive vandalism and neglect over the years. Shockingly, the structure presently shares a common wall with the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority landfill site for garbage. Rahim was the son of Bairam Khan, Akbar's mentor. One of the jewels of emperor Akbar's court. The ruins have been under threat for more than 50 years. But, the structure is neither on the heritage list of Archaeological Survey of India nor Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. As you make way through the thick vegetation of weeds and nettles, a four-foot deep pool on the dilapidated terrace will catch your attention.

it does not give choice to voters to abstain from voting,” Congress’s chief whip in the Assembly, Balwantsinh Rajput, said in his letter yesterday. Article 51 (a) of the Constitution gives the right to vote, but doesn’t speak about mandatory duty, the letter said. The BJP government earlier this month formed a committee, headed by the former state election commissioner K C Kapoor, to frame rules under the law and invited suggestions from the people. Rajput said if a person, though physically fit, can not cast vote due to some social or other compulsion, it would be improper to impose “an illogical law” on him or her. The

committee — which is supposed to prescribe the penal action under the law — cannot declare a citizen as defaulter and bar him/her from casting a vote, contending polls or winning an election (for failing to exercise the franchise), Congress said, adding that such an action would amount to the capital punishment in a democracy. The law itself does not specify the punishment, so it is not clear. Further, the Gujarat citizens who are outside the state during the polls can not be forced to vote, it said. Former Governor Kamla had refused assent to the bill twice, saying it violated the Article 21 (right to personal liberty) of the constitution.

Vadodara to get a new Sports Complex, Dwarka to get model railway station Agency : Vadodara Stating that railway stations should be made as attractive as airports, a Central Minister today said details of the station redevelopment policy announced in the February Rail Budget will be unveiled soon. “The policy will concentrate on ‘A’ category stations which are to be developed as model stations,” Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha said here. “While the process for development of the already selected stations would continue, for the rest, we propose to revamp the station redevelopment policy and simplify processes by inviting open bids from interested parties,” he said. Sinha was speaking to reporters after laying the foundation stone of a sports

complex at the National Academy of Indian Railways (NAIR) here. So far, 1,052 stations have been identified for upgradation of passenger amenities. It is proposed to include 200 more stations under this scheme, Sinha stated. WiFi facility is being provided at all ‘A1' and ‘A’ category stations. The facility will be soon extended to ‘B’ category stations as well under Digital India initiative, the Junior Railway Minister said. Since a large population travels by trains, stations should be made as attractive as airports, he said. “A transformed station can change the skyline of small and medium cities, bring in revenues, and also become an incubator of local economy,” he added.

CAG report: Former CM tears into ‘Gujarat model’ Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

Former Gujarat chief minister Suresh Mehta on Tuesday highlighted how the BJPruled state is far from a role model for states across India, and that progress made in improving healthcare and empowerment of women and children is not creditable. "The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) is able to access only 10% of the performance of states. Therefore, shocking facts and figures related to Gujarat in the CAG report are just the tip of the iceberg," Mehta said. He was addressing a conference on 'Gujarat

Women's Reality Reflection on CAG Report' that was organized by Ahmedabad Women's Action Group (AWAG). Ridiculing the Gujarat model, he said the state government blows its own trumpet by claiming to have started 132 women's schemes. "But surprisingly, even government officials are sometimes unaware of such schemes," he said. All India Mahila Sanskritik Sangathan state convener Meenakshi Joshi said: "Gujarat makes tall claims of women's empowerment, but CAG has reported that the sex ratio at birth in 15

out of 26 districts in the state has declined. Birth ratio of girl children increased in the country from 1,000/ 933 to 1,000/943, but in Gujarat, it has gone down from 1,000/920 to 1,000/ 919. Besides, 181 cases were registered under PNDT Act but investigation was ordered in only 49 cases." She also said that 659 cases of child marriage were reported.

Tumor heavier than newborn removed from man’s abdomen Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

This man was living with a tumor that weighed more than a newborn. Amazed? Deepak Patel had excruciating stomach ache six months back and the discomfort grew with time. Doctors at a government hospital put him on heavy antibiotics for pain and indigestion but his malaise persisted. By the time he reached a private hospital opposite Doordarshan Kendra — after shuttling between different health centres — his belly had

swollen three times its size. Surprisingly, the 65-year-old was still unaware of the abnormal tissue growth he was carrying in his upper abdomen. On inspection, even doctors were surprised to find a 5.5kg tumor dangling between the liver and stomach. The tumor measured 14 inches by 11 centimetres. "Half of the swelling was extending beneath the rib cage that forms part of the body's respiratory system," said Dr Apoorva Patel, consultant surgeon. "We went through the abdominal route to sepa-

rate the growth from intestine, liver, stomach, kidney and other major organs. We faced several hurdles as the tumor was invisible at times and we had to go for blind detection with hands." The Vejalpur resident weighed a more than 95kg at the time of surgery. When he was wheeled out of the operation theatre, he tipped the scales to just 87kg. Dr Patel said the tumor was non-malignant. Had the growth been left undetected, the patient would have suffered jaundice and severe intestinal obstruction.
