‘Family with you’: Shatrughan Sinha, sons join Poonam on Lucknow roadshow

Lucknow : Samajwadi Party member Poonam Sinha undertook a road show ahead of filing her nomination papers at the collector’s office in Lucknow on Thursday. Poonam Sinha, who is Congress leader Shatrughan Sinha’s wife, is contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Lucknow against Union home minister and senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh. Poonam joined the Samajwadi Party on Tuesday in the presence of Dimple Yadav, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav’s wife. Poonam Sinha’s candidature from Lucknow was announced by Akhilesh Yadav a day later, on Wednesday. Shatrughan Sinha had earlier said that he would campaign for his wife, but not for any other non-Congress leader. As Poonam Sinha goes up against veteran BJP leader

Rajnath Singh, Congress’s candidate from Lucknow Acharya Pramod Krishnan has protested against Shatrughan campaigning for Poonam Sinha. Poonam Sinha’s road show began from the party office in Lucknow on Akhilesh Yadav’s ‘Kaam bolta hai rath’. Accompanying her were Shatrughan Sinha and Dimple Yadav. All three of them were raised via a hydraulic lift to the roof of the rath that the Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav had got made especially for the 2017 assembly elections. Known as the “Kaam Bolta Hai Rath”, a throwback to the Samajwadi Party’s slogan of “kaam bolta hai (My work speaks for itself)”, it has been taken out every time the Yadav family members have gone to file their nomination papers.

The cross trade is meant to enable exchange of goods of common use between local populations across the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. Trade is allowed through two Trade Facilitation Centres located at Salambad in Baramulla district and Chakkan-da-Bagh in Poonch and takes place four days a week. It attracts zero duty and is based on the barter system. “The action has been taken as the Government of India has been receiving reports that the cross Line of Control trade routes are being misused by Pakistan based elements for funneling illegal weapons, narcotics and fake currency etc”, the Home Ministry said in a statement. The cost of flying on flawed assumptions

With compliant lenders as co-pilots, Jet Airways’ descent was a foregone conclusion. The pity is that the inevitable was delayed for so long that much of its market value has been wiped out. For months now, Jet Airways has been trapped in a vortex with seemingly no end in sight. On Wednesday night, its ordeal finally ended in complete capitulation. The obstinacy of its original promoter Naresh Goyal has made a once-proud carrier fold its wings, but he is not the only one to blame in this sordid saga of mismanagement and adventurism. Banks and regulators have had parts to play as well. Those trying to portray Goyal as a wronged hero (and that includes a certain Vijay Mallya), a businessman who created a worthy company only to be let down by circumstances beyond his control, would do well to recollect his many bad moves. In hindsight, it is clear that Jet flew into an air pocket that would send it spiralling down as far back as April 2007, when it acquired the loss-making Air Sahara for 1,450 crore. The deal itself, despite Goyal’s reputation as an adroit deal-maker, was almost forced upon him. Legal and regulatory issues had kept the acquisition in abeyance for over a year, and it was believed that Jet only saw it through till the end because it risked losing the 500 crore it had already paid for it. By the time the deal was finalized and a merger of the two mismatched airlines could even begin, Indigo had started operations as a rival carrier with a clear focus on operational efficiency. The low-cost model that Jet acquired Air Sahara for was Indigo’s raison d’etre from the get-go and it would reap huge rewards in the form of a whopping 42% market share in less than a decade. Coupled with a confused aircraft purchase strategy, all this knocked the bottom out of Jet’s finances. From a pre-tax profit of 681 crore in 2005-06, it plunged to a loss of 442 crore in 2007-08. Since then, apart from two profitable years—2015-16 and 2016-17—it has consistently lost money. By 2011-12, its net worth had started getting eroded. The airline’s death spiral had begun. Goyal, it seems, continued to believe that an ability to influence policy decisions to his advantage would keep Jet airborne. Thus, in 2013 when Etihad picked up a 24% stake in the company for $379 million (2,060 crore), it was the first beneficiary of an easing of rules by the government that allowed foreign airlines to buy up to 49% of a domestic carrier’s equity. Etihad paid a big premium for Jet’s shares, an indication of how keen it was to enter the Indian aviation market. For its part, Jet said it would use some of the proceeds from the sale to retire some of its $2.3 billion debt. The airline’s growth debt- fuelled growth has all along been facilitated by compliant bankers, among them the country’s top two public sector lenders, State Bank of India and Punjab National Bank. Even when Jet defaulted on its repayments at the end of 2018, Goyal’s interests seemed to prevail in efforts to work out a solution. It was last August, when Jet’s auditor raised questions over its survival, that its main creditors should have started looking for buyers. Instead, the banks convinced themselves that they could convert their debt into equity and keep it going. Those shares today are worth only - Kapilkumar M. 1972 film Jawani Diwani starring Randhir Kapoor and Jaya Bachchan. A few days back, Karan Johar took to Twitter and shared a video in which the lead cast is seen announcing the news while grooving on the original track and in the clip, while Tara is saying, “The most iconic song ever”, Tiger is heard saying that, “My dad’s favourite song and I got to dance to it”, and lastly, Ananya says, “It is such a privilege for us

Just like The Disco Song, The Jawaani Song looks like a competition in the Saint Teresa school wherein everyone is comepeting against each other to qualify for the next song. In the song, we have three different sequences and while in one sequence, we have all of them dressed in retro, the other two sequences have them slaying in casual and party outifts.

If you’re not going to the World Cup to win, then you shouldn’t go - Steyn

New Delhi : Dale Steyn, South Africa’s premium fast bowler, believes that the current International Cricket Council’s (ICC) One-Day International rankings will play no role in determining the winners of the upcoming Cricket World Cup, due to start in England, from May 30th. The veteran of two World Cups was speaking with the press in Kolkata after joining the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as a replacement player for Australia’s Nathan CoulterNile in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). South

Africa are set to announce their preliminary 15-man World Cup squad on Wednesday (April 18) and the 35-year old pacer is widely expected to add to his two World Cup appearances. “I think you really need to take rankings and throw it out of the window. Rankings these days don’t mean anything. I don’t even know what ranking West Indies have, and they just beat England. Australia were losing, and then they’ve started winning again,” Steyn said at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. “I think every team going to the World Cup has a massive

chance. England are playing in England, and they’re playing some good white-ball cricket. You just need to go there, figure out which teams are best adapting to the conditions

and then the team that hits the ground running first has the best chance,” he added. Speaking about his team’s chances, Steyn, who will turn 36 during the showpiece event,

felt that the four-time semifinalists had an even chance of claiming their first-ever silverware. “I don’t think South Africa have lost an ODI series in one and a half years but no one gives us a chance and then somebody does,” he said, speaking of his team’s recent high success rate in ODIs. (South Africa have lost 2 out of 13 series in this period) “If you’re not going to the World Cup expecting to win, then you probably shouldn’t go. But I’m not going to lie, we have some fantastic players,” Steyn added.

New Delhi : Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul have recovered well from the controversy over their objectionable comments on women during a TV chat show. After being put under a provisional suspension by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), both the players produced impressive shows on comeback and booked their place in the 15-man squad for the ICC World Cup 2019, starting on May 30 in the UK. As Rahul turned 27 on Thursday, Hardik Pandya posted a heartwarming birthday wish for the opening batsman, assuring him a lifetime bond. “Brothers for life!!!!! No matter what!!! Love u bro @rahulkl happy birthday. Let’s make it our year,” Pandya captioned a photograph with Rahul on Instagram. In the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), Rahul has been in a great form for Kings XI Punjab. With 387 runs in nine matches and a century to his name, Rahul is currently the second leading run-scorer in the IPL 2019. Pandya, on the other hand, has amassed 186 runs in eight matches and

Why Jet Airways is a bigger nightmare for bankers and government than Kingfisher was

New Delhi : On the surface, there was nothing in common between the flamboyant Vijay Mallya and the highly reticent Naresh Goyal. Mallya loved living life “kingsized” and he threw spectacular parties with beautiful women and multiple celebrities in tow, owned some great houses, collected fast cars, owned a stud farm and dabbled in multiple businesses. He actively sought out publicity and flaunted his connections - getting himself elected to the Parliament through the Rajya Sabha route with the help of several friendly political parties. Naresh Goyal gave few interviews and stuck largely to travel (he started off by first working with his uncle in the latter’s travel agency and then started his own business which was an agent of several

foreign airlines). Jet was largely his entire life and he was known to be fairly parsimonious in his travels and business expenses. Both men though built airlines with wonderful flying experiences. Kingfisher, when it was flying, was one of the best airlines for passengers both in economy and business classes. Jet, of course, had set new standards when it first came in and its service quality during its heydays

was only matched (in my opinion actually excelled) by Kingfisher. Now that it has been grounded - the board and lenders are hoping temporarily - there is only Vistara left for passengers hoping for a not-too-uncomfortable travel experience. (The low cost airlines are efficient but not particularly passengerfriendly while Air India is too erratic and inconsistent in its experience). For bankers and vendors though, both men were bad businessmen when it came to running an airline. Kingfisher Airlines of course never made any money during the time it was flying and kept borrowing from bankers promising to turn around soon. But Jet, which at one time had a great market share (over 20 per cent) and made profits was not particularly well run as a business either.

picked up seven wickets, including a man of the match winning performance against Chennai Super Kings. India opener Shikhar Dhawan also joined the celebration as he said in a tweet: “Happy birthday Bro, @klrahul11 have a super successful year. Hoping for some big knocks and more good times ahead!”

Unfortunate to see so many people going after MS Dhoni : Kohli He also expressed his disappointment over the people criticising Dhoni every now and then.

New Delhi : Virat Kohli admires MS Dhoni a lot and it is not an unknown fact. After taking over India’s leadership, he had stressed that Dhoni will forever be his captain and the trust and the mutual respect between them has been visible for the world since then. Every time, the former captain has come under the radar for his slow batting, Kohli has come out in support for him and has rather backed him to the hilt. Kohli is the happiest person of all whenever Dhoni performs in the middle and feels lucky to have a player like him in the team. Dhoni, more often than not, takes over the captaincy during the death overs as Kohli is in the outfield and also guides the spinners, Kuldeep Ya d a v a n d Yu z v e n d r a C h ah al. K ed ar J ad h av, rather blindly follows his advice and has reaped rich

rewards for the same as well. Speaking to India Today, in an exclusive interview, Virat Kohli expressed his disappointment over MS Dhoni being targetted every now and then. “After 30-35 overs, he knows that I will be in the outfield and its on auto mode. It’s just about the field placements and bowling changes and we say you know the angles, you know the pace of the pitch and that’s why there is so much trust and respect between the two of us. It’s unfortunate to see so many people going after him,” the 30-year-old said. Kohli also

pointed out how MS Dhoni understands the game from standing behind the stumps. He hailed Mahi for the same and is delighted to have a player like him. “He (MS Dhoni) is one person who knows the game inside out, who understands the game from ball 1 to ball 300 on the field. I won’t say it is a luxury to have him but I am fortunate to have a mind like that from behind the stumps. At the end of the day, I want to be involved in strategy with the team management with Mahi bhai and Rohit (Sharma),” he further added.

Cops’ burglar googly nets 10 cricket bookies

Rajkot : Ever since the IPL 2019 season began, a sprawling bungalow in Adipur town of Kutch has been the hub of cricket betting for Gujarat 10 big bookies. Huge cash was stashed here and there was no fear of police as the bungalow was at in isolated spot. On Tuesday night, when 10 bookies were busy taking bets, a stone suddenly came hurling on one of the windows. Soon, another window glass was shattered with a stick. The bookies thought burglars had attacked and some of them even saw a few men moving around wearing Kutchi lungi. They quickly decided to take on the burglars and opened the door. But to their utter shock, the 10 bookies found that cops had disguised as burglars to nab them. After getting specific information about the betting racket flourishing in Adipur, police narrowed down on this 700 sqm bungalow. “But instead of directly storming into the bungalow, we hit up on a plan to fox the bookies by disguising as

burglars so that they don’t get any whiff. Also, we did not want them to delete crucial information from their laptops or computers which could be a clinching evidence against them,” said DB Vaghela, inspector general of police (IGP), border range. “Since it was dark outside, the bookies couldn’t make out they were policemen and thought they were burglars,” said Vaghela, adding these 10 were the biggest

Rare lung surgery gives life to six-month-old

Anand : A six-monthold child suffering from a rare respiratory disorder has received a new lease of life after successfully undergoing hybrid lung isolation and thoracic surgery. According to doctors at Karamsad-based Shree Krishna Hospital, it is first such reported case in an infant in the country. from congenital lobar emphysema. “We performed right middle lobectomy and the child’s right lung was expanded post-surgery. After the operation, there was no visible air leak. We planned ventilation strategy considering the child’s age. We performed left lung ventilation, mechanically separating the two lungs to allow ventilation of only one lung while the other lung was compressed. We also performed ventilation part of right upper lobe with right lower lung isolation,” said Dr Vishal Bhende, paediatric

Forest Rangers capture leopard who dragged toddler out of bed, mauled him to death in Gujarat

Vadodara : Less than 24 hours after a nine-month-old boy was killed by an adult leopard in the Chhota Udepur city of Gujarat, forest officials on Wednesday captured a leopard not far from where the boy’s decapitated body was found the day before. Rangers believe that the trapped animal is the same who might have attacked and killed Dhaval Rathwa while he was sleeping beside his mother on a cot outside their home in Zari village. Around 4 am on Tuesday, the big cat dragged the child out of his bed and fled away. The matter came to light only the next morning when locals discovered the child’s decapitated body in the forest area near the village. The Gujarat State Forest Department was alerted and rangers were sent to

nearby. The video is believed to be shot somewhere in Amreli district. DT Vasavada, chief conservator of forest, Junagadh wildlife, said, “We have seen the video and investigating the matter. The Gandhidham police, which conducted the raid with rapid response cell and cyber cell sleuths, also seized material worth Rs 27.75 lakh that included a luxurious car and several mobile phones. The bookies had kept their place so secretive that they had not even disclosed it to their family members. “Had we knocked the

door from outside, they would have understood that its a police raid. They would have formatted the computer and mobile handsets before opening the door. So, one team disguised as burglars and another waited in civil dress outside the door,” Vaghela said. J P Jadeja, in-charge police inspector of cyber cell said, “The bookies were using a hardware called communicator. Around 18 phones can be connected to one machine. There were four such communicators and nearly 50-60 phones connected to them to take bets from all over the state. the forest departments’ rescue centre in Pavagadh, which is nearly 70 kilometres from Chhota Udepur. Meanwhile, the animal has been kept under observation. Deputy conservator of forest of the area, Nilesh Pandya told Times of India that a compensation of Rs 4 lakh has been given to the deceased child’s father as per the norm. Cotton exports from Gujarat to hit decadal low

Ahmedabad : India’s cotton exports are estimated to decline to a decadal low in 2018-19 thanks to higher prices of Indian cotton in international market and lower production of the natural fibre within the country. Gujarat accounts for more than 45% of cotton exports from India. According the latest estimates by the apex trade body Cotton Association of India (CAI), cotton exports from the country are pegged at 47 lakh bales (one bale weighs 170kg) in 2018-19, which is the lowest since 2009-10. In 2008-09, cotton exports had touched a low of 35 lakh bales. “The reason for the slowdown in cotton exports is higher prices of Indian cotton, which have firmed up because the production of crop in 2018-19 was low,” said Atul Ganatra, the president of CAI. “The price of Shankar-6 variety of cotton in April touched Rs 46,500 to Rs 47,000 per candy (356 kg), which is higher at least by Rs 5,000 per candy quoted in the same month last year. Our cotton is very costly for international buyers.” Since February, Shankar-6 cotton prices in the international market have shot up to 9092 cents per pound, while the US cotton is available at 88-89 cents.
