After claiming this, they cited complaints lodged against them during all these years the cases include a murder case, an arms case and a case related to the Terrorist And Disruptive Activ ities Act (TADA). They have also mentioned the status of these cases.

Three senior police officers, including an IPS officer, were suspended today by the Gujarat Home Department after they were found guilty in an alleged police subinspector recruitment scam. A senior Gujarat Home Department official confirmed the development stating

that they have put orders related to the same on the official website of the home department. “2007 batch IPS officer Manoj Ninama, who is currently posted as Commandant of State Reserve Police (SRP), Group-13, Rajkot, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Rajkot, A L Chaudhari, and Deputy Superintendent

S Korea pledges $10bn for infra projects in India

Agency : Bhubaneswar South Korea on Sunday pledged $10 billion for financing infrastructure projects, including smart cities and railways, in India. The announcement followed a summit meeting between PM Narendra Modi and South Korean President Park Geun-hye. The pledge comprises an “Economic Development Cooperation Fund ($1 billion) and export credits ($9 billion) for priority sectors, including smart cities, railways, power generation and transmission, and other sectors to be agreed“, said the statement. Modi’s Korea visit was aimed at getting Korean investment in sectors like shipbuild-

ing, which is lagging due to non-availability of technology in India. The statement further said President Park welcomed India’s `Make in India’ initiative as it provides new avenues to enrich and add substance to bilateral relations. Modi invited Korea to become a privileged partner in `Make in India’ “to which Park conveyed her appreciation“. The leaders

will be the second time for the force in the high-voltage, “network-centric’’ exercise. IAF chief Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha on Monday left for a fourday visit to the US, during which he is slated to receive a detailed briefing on the Red Flag combat manoeuvres at the Nellis US Air Force base in Nevada, north west of Las Vegas, among other consultations. It was in 2008 that the IAF had earlier

participated in Red Flag at the Nellis airbase, which is considered the “mother’’ of all air combat exercises since it comes closest to realistic air combat without actually going to war. It was also the first time that the Russian-origin Sukhoi-30MKI fighters had flown over the American mainland. Though not quite familiar with operating in an AWACS (airborne warning and control systems) environment

then, IAF fighter pilots had performed quite well in the demanding exercise. Since then, IAF has inducted and operationalized three Israeli Phalcon AWACS of its own. Apart from detecting incoming hostile fighters, cruise missiles and drones much before ground-based radars, AWACS play a crucial role in directing friendly fighters during combat operations with enemy jets.

Telescope: Here, there, everywhere in kurta-waistcoat tells the Indian diaspora that while they holiday on Sunday, he will work (their fault?). Mongolia: Modi in a hat stands beside the horse gifted to him. Seoul: Modi, in a casual jacket and scarf snaked about his neck, asks Korean CEOs to see “the change” in India. Here’s a striking feature of the Indian prime minister in the last year: even when he is far away from us, he is just a remote control button away. Or, to use the Delhi Police slogan— with you, for you, always. By stringing Doordarshan along, by going tweet-tweet all day long, Modi has been the overwhelming presence in our lives. We are unable to ignore him. He is always going places (literally and metaphorically), declaiming grandly on live broadcasts and cutting a fine figure. You may or may not approve of his fashion statements but he makes them all the time, and they say something about the man: He wants his presence known, felt. Can anyone forget his monogrammed suit? The previous prime minister had many sterling qualities, but addressing the public was not one of them. We barely heard him speak. He too travelled the world and the seven seas, but his media managers seldom exposed him to “live” broadcasts. We witnessed few hugs, warm handshakes with foreign leaders or heard their compliments. With Modi, it is quite the opposite. He is here, there and everywhere — on TV. A calculated strategy excludes the private-owned media from his entourage, but ensures All India Radio and Doordarshan capture and broadcast his best moments. Which is why, even when he addresses foreign audiences, he is addressing “the nation”, too. Wearing that hat and standing by the horse gifted to him in Mongolia, Modi was like India’s Marlboro Man in the American cigarette commercials: masculine, adventurous and always on the move. (Speaking of ads, noticed Dulcoflex and an Ayurvedic churan for constipation on air — inspired by the film Piku?) Watched J.P. Nadda interviewed on Doordarshan (Monday). Who? While we’ve been overexposed to the prime minister, his ministers have marked their presence by their absence from public view — barring a few, of course. Now, they are being pushed in front of the TV cameras and told to explain how they’ve earned their keep over the last 365 days. That irritating gadfly of the NDA government is back. The Delhi chief minister always finds ways to turn the cameras away from Modi and towards himself. Thus, the Arvind Kejriwal-Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung standoff assumed such gargantuan proportions in the media that the evening debates on Modi’s first year were drowned out by the “jung” (poor pun). You see so much of Kejriwal on TV, you sometimes wonder when he works. No matter how many times news channels broadcast the CCTV footage of the shootout-death of Manoj Vashisht, we couldn’t see what exactly happened. So why run it so often?

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan feels people should not seek blessings from a celebrity or ask them to name their newborn. Bachchan, 72, who meets his fans outside his house Jalsa every Sunday, said over the years he has discovered many unique “modus operandi” of meeting him. “Many seek blessings from celebrities, names for their children and on. This is disapproved. I am not worthy of blessings nor intelligent enough to give a name. Please do not put me through that ordeal! It would be horrible for a child to live through his entire life saddled with a name that was not his parents calling,” Bachchan posted on his blog. Sharing one of the interesting anecdotes of meeting a young fan recently, the “Piku” star said people often use their children to get his autograph.“A little fellow once came to me on a crowded occasion, and asked for my autograph, looking

completely puzzled and hassled. He was having problems pronouncing ‘autograph’…Photograph, auto car, and some other contortions were with effort struggling to form out of his chubby face. “He was precocious and honest. When I asked him his name, he promptly told me that. When I asked him what my name was he said : ‘I don’t know your name. My Father asked me to come to you, so I have come’!!. hahahaha.. cute!,” he said.

In her dying moments, model-turned-actor Shikha Joshi allegedly named well-known cosmetic surgeon Dr Vijay Sharma, among others, who she claimed had been troubling her, said a friend in her statement to the police on Sunday. Her words were recorded on a cellphone by the friend Joshi was living with. While the police said the authenticity of the audio recording would have to be verified, Joshi’s friend Madhubharti Pathan has told them that the actor was quite depressed in the past week because of her failure to secure employment. BA Pass Actor Shikha Joshi Commits Suicide Sharma, meanwhile, said, “The matter is sub judice, so I cannot make any comments. She was afraid of being convicted in court and so she has done this. This is a blackmailing racket and the truth will eventually prevail.” In October 2011, Joshi had accused Sharma of molesting her while performing a breast examination. He was then arrested by the Khar police. Later, in November 2013, Joshi and her brother were arrested for pelting stones at Sharma’s clinic in Andheri (West). The surgeon was charged with molestation in separate instances in 2008 too and got bail in both cases. The 2011 case is still being heard at a Bandra court. “We will speak with him (Sharma) and record his

statements in the coming days. We will make inquiries with everyone under suspicion,” said Samadhan Dhanedhar, Assistant Commissioner of Police, D N Nagar Division. He added that the voice recording would be sent to the Kalina Forensic Sciences Laboratory for verification. Joshi, 40, allegedly slit her throat with a kitchen knife Saturday evening at Pathan’s house in New Mhada Colony, Andheri (West). According to the police, before rushing Joshi to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, where she was declared dead, Pathan had asked Joshi why did she try to take the extreme step. “She was conscious and able to speak for a while. She said the cosmetic surgeon and a few ‘married men’ had been troubling her. By then, my husband Riyaz arrived and we took her to the hospital. I recorded what she said on my cellphone because I did not want the police to suspect me of any wrongdoing. She then began to wave her arms and gesticulate,” Pathan said. On Monday, the police had also dusted Joshi’s fingerprints on the door of the bathroom and conducted a forensic examination of the apartment. Pathan, the only person present at home when Joshi allegedly killed herself, told the police that Joshi had been depressed for the last eight days.

Director Kabir Khan feels Salman Khan‘s presence in Kashmir for “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” shooting will send out a strong message that the Valley is safe for movie shootings. “Of course, the place is ready (for Bollywood). There are problems… I am not saying there are no problems, but it is ready,” Khan told reporters here, 85 kms from Srinagar. The director said the place needs some infrastructural improvements but that is a countrywide problem and not unique to Kashmir. “Yes, there can be improvements. Sometimes, we feel that we lack internet

speed here as our work depends on that. Sometimes we feel the roads could be better. There is some infrastructure problem, but that is a problem all over the country,” Kabir said. The director is confident that the shooting of a big budget Bollywood movie is a sign of how things have improved after decades of violence. “The fact that Salman Khan comes to Kashmir and shoots for 40 days, this is a huge signal and message going out that things are normal. If Salman can shoot for forty days in Kashmir, then anybody in the industry can come and shoot in Kashmir,” he said. The film has been

shot in Pahalgam, Aru, Sonamarg, Thajwas and Zojila. The director, who previously made “Ek Tha Tiger” with Salman, said it was surprising to see no cinemas in the Valley where there are many fans of Bollywood. “We would love to release the movie here. (But) it is surprising that there is no theatre,” Kabir said, adding the government should do something to change that. “They (government) are definitely extending their vision to getting Bollywood to shoot in Kashmir. They have announced single window clearances. But along with that, definitely open cinema theatres.”

E-commerce firms up in arms over bilateral pacts to liberalise sector Agency : New Delhi

Homegrown e-commerce firms like Flipkart have strongly opposed what they perceive as the government’s willingness to employ bilateral pacts with some big trading partners to liberalise the sector while the policy stance outside such pacts, or in the most-favoured nation (MFN) space, is to tread warily on this front. Analysts see this as an attempt by these local firms to create a vast business space using their deep pockets to keep potential competition at bay. Local e-tailers are learnt to have “strongly” opposed Japan’s pitch for the sector’s liberalisation through the mega regional pact called the Regional Comprehensive

Economic Partnership (RECP) agreement, official sources said. India is participating in RCEP negotiations with 15 other countries. These players have also objected to something unnoticed so far — India agreeing for a separate e-commerce chapter in the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) with Singapore without adequate stakeholder consultation. Govt contains FY15 fiscal deficit at 4%, beats target Agency : New Delhi

Despite an ambitious target, the Centre managed to contain its fiscal deficit at 4 per cent of the GDP or Rs 5,01,880 crore in 2014-15, overcoming a shortfall in tax collections. This is marginally better than the target of 4.1 per cent of the GDP for the fiscal deficit in 2014-15 and amounts to 98 per cent of the projected figure in revised estimate. The revenue deficit was also contained at 2.8 per cent of the GDP or Rs 3,58,306 crore, partially lower than the targetted 2.9 per cent of the GDP last fiscal. The finance ministry said this was possible through prudent fiscal policies adding, “The government is firmly committed to path of fiscal consolidation and this is a step forward.” The fiscal deficit

target was set at 4.1 per cent by the former UPA government, but finance minister Arun Jaitley had said he was taking it as a “challenge” to meet this ambitious and “daunting target” set up by his predecessor P Chidambaram. For 2015-16, Jaitley has aimed to contain the fiscal deficit at 3.9 per cent of the GDP and the revenue deficit at 2.8 per cent of the GDP in the current fiscal. According to the data release by the finance ministry on Sunday, gross tax collections grew 9 per cent in 2014-15 and stood at Rs 12,45,037 crore, partially lower than the revised estimate of Rs 12,51,391 crore.

Bangladesh announce 23-member preliminary squad for India series Agency : Hyderabad PBuoyed by the comprehensive win over Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians’ star bowler Mitchell McClenaghan said his side is fully prepared for the IPL playoff match against heavyweights Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday. “We have got some fantastic players. We have got a fantastic support staff behind us. They do a fantastic job. I think the most important thing is that we

prepare every time we go out to play. As long as we prepare well and turn up, we will be able to win,” he told reporters after MI thrashed the Hyderabad side by nine wickets last night. He said it was important for the team to get the top order out soon to take an early advantage in the match. The Mumbai side broke the back of Hyderabad innings by getting its openers — captain David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan — out

in the first two overs of the innings. “I was bowling to the big boundary. David (Warner) is a great puller of the ball, great striker of the ball. I took a chance. It could have gone for a six. It could have taken a wicket. It’s just one of those things. In matches, you need to take a chance,” he said. McClenaghan expressed happiness at getting the opportunity to play a key role for the Mumbai Indians.

Nyay Mandir office for Baroda top cops? Correspondent, Vadodara

The majestic Nyay Mandir that currently houses district courts may become a workplace for police officials in coming years. The city police department plans to write to the state government for taking possession of Nyay Mandir, a 19th century marvel, once the district courts move out of it. Facing a severe dearth of space for police stations, the police department is eyeing the spacious structure right in the middle of the city. Nyay Mandir currently houses district courts and also serves as workplace for hundreds of lawyers apart from typists. City police commissioner E Radhakrishana told TOI, “The courts will be shift-

I will write to the state government to give us the possession of Nyay Mandir. We will accommodate two police stations and offices of senior police officials there.“ If sanctioned, Nyay Mandir will house offices of DCP and DCB police station that is currently located near Panigate. “Having senior police officials stationed in Nyay Mandir will give us strategic advantage as it is close to communally sensitive areas. We will be able to control and monitor any unrest efficiently if cops are stationed close by ,“ Radhakrishana said.

100 years of Kochrab Ashram: May 20 or 25? Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

While Gujarat Vidyapith is preparing to celebrate the centenary of the foundation day of Satyagraha Ashram, Kochrab, on May 25, city-based historian Rizwan Kadri has brought to light discrepancies regarding the actual date of its establishment. idyapith considers May 25, 1915, as the day when the ashram was founded. For its claim, it cites Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography and Chandulal Bhagubhai Dalal’s `Gandhiji ni Dinwari’ (1970). “However, the Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi volume 13, page no 169, which is based on Gandhiji’s handwritten diary published by the Government of India in 1964, claims

May 20, 1915 as the ashram’s foundation day . `Gandhiji no Akshardeh’ published by Navajivan Prakashan Mandir also mentions May 20, 1915 as the ashram’s foundation day.Gandhiji had mistakenly mentioned May 25 as the date in his autobiography ,“ says Kadri. Kadri says that late veteran Gandhian Narayan Desai had pointed out a few errors in Gandhiji’s autobiography . “Narayanbhai

had pointed out one mistake on chapter no 6 of part-1 of Gandhi’s autobiography in which there is a description of poem by Navalram Pan dya. However, instead of Pandya, Gandhi credits the poem to Kavi Narmad. There are two places where he mentioned wrong dates,“ he says. However, more than Gandhi’s autobiography , it is `Gandhiji ni Dinwari’ which is replete with errors, says Kadri.
