Buffetted by political attacks coupled with unending speculation over his continuance, RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan on Saturday said no to a second term in the post, a surprise decision the industry and opposition parties termed as nation’s loss. Ruing that his work on containing inflation

and cleaning up books of the banks was “yet to be completed”, Rajan said, “While I was open to seeing these developments through, on due reflection, and after consultation with the government, I want to share with you that I will be returning to academia when my term as Governor ends on September 4, 2016.” Specu-

BJP MP Subramanian Swamy, who ran a tirade against RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan, on Saturday said the Reserve Bank head is a government employee and is not selected on the basis of popular vote. “Raghuram Rajan is an employee of the Government of India. We don’t select employees on the basis of pop-

ular vote,” he said, reacting to Rajan’s decision not to take a second term. “Let him (Raghuram Rajan) pretend that he is giving up and going. As long as he is going, it is good,” added Swamy. In a series of letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Swamy had demanded sacking of Rajan, arguing that he is not “fully

mentally Indian” and had been sending confidential and sensitive financial information around the world. Rajan, in a letter to RBI employees on Saturday said that he would go back to Chicago to continue his academic career after completion of his three-year term as central bank chief on September 4. has been rife over whether Rajan, an acclaimed IMF economist known to have predicted the 2008 global financial crisis, would get a second term after BJP leader Subramanian Swamy launched a no-holds barred attack on him recently accusing him of destroying economy with his hawkish stance on interest rates. While Finance Minister Arun Jaitley called for restraint in public criticism in the wake of Swamy’s attacks, BJP President Amit Shah said the newly-nominated MP’s remarks were his personal opinion. Swamy had also questioned whether Rajan was “mentally, fully Indian” as he holds a US Green Card, among other allegations. 53-year-old Rajan, who took charge as RBI Governor in September 2013 with a three-year term, had also ruffled feathers

in the saffron camp with his outspoken views on issues like intolerance and his remarks about India being ‘one-eyed king in the land of blind’. While Finance Minister Arun Jaitley called for restraint in public criticism in the wake of Swamy’s attacks, BJP President Amit Shah said the newly-nominated MP’s remarks were his personal opinion. Answering questions on another term for Rajan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that this “administrative subject” should not be an issue of

interest to the media and it “will come up only in September”. In his letter to colleagues, 53-yearold Rajan, appointed by the previous UPA Government in September 2013, said he “will, of course, always be available to serve my country when needed”. Decision of Rajan, who was called a rockstar central banker, immediately set off speculation about his successor and the impact it could have on stock and bond markets when they open on Monday morning.

What role are state parties likely to play in shaping national politics? Already, the BJP is in partnership with at least four major state parties — PDP, Akali Dal, AGP and Shiv Sena — besides having the support of the TDP. In the run-up to the next parliamentary election, it could further intensify its bid to ally with more state parties. On the other hand, anti-BJP forces would draw succour from the fact that Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress, like Nitish Kumar’s JD(U), could become the centre of the new anti-BJP (“secular”) alliance in the near future. This tendency to superimpose discursive categories on the politics of regional forces is somewhat self-defeating and misleading. In the ideological haste to imagine a non-communal political alternative, the historical trajectory and the state-specific context for the rise and continued predominance of the state parties are always ignored. The absence of an all-India alternative and inability of the Congress to federally incorporate regional aspirations contributed to the rise of the so-called regional parties and they thrived once the local power structures belonging to the Congress began to crumble. It is well-known that the limitations of state parties in tackling the Congress and their all-India aspirations facilitated their alliances with the BJP in the ‘90s. The BJP was then a junior player in most of the states, making the regional parties secure. Whenever the ambitions of the state party and the BJP clashed, their coalitions came under pressure. The earliest instance of this was the BJP-BSP alliance intended to keep the SP away. This alliance never worked because both partners were impatient to emerge as the main player in the state. Similarly, the JD(S)-BJP alliance in Karnataka was ill-fated because each party perceived itself to be the main challenger to the Congress and wanted to use the other only as a temporary prop. Over time, Odisha, West Bengal, and more recently Bihar and Maharashtra, have exemplified the limitations of the BJP’s regional game plan. In these states, once the BJP began to expand and become a major player, the state-level partner developed problems with the BJP and discovered that it was, after all, a communal force. The lessons to be drawn from this historical context are two-fold. First, the state parties are neither naturally anti-communal nor are they natural allies of the BJP. It is true that the Trinamool Congress or the JD(U) had to take into consideration the wariness of the Muslim voter vis-à-vis the BJP. However, that was not deterrent enough to their overtures to the BJP. It is the state-level context which will decide their stance towards the BJP. Take the case of Tamil Nadu. If the Congress has chosen to continue its alliance with the DMK, it makes sense for the AIADMK to build bridges with the BJP. The case of West Bengal is even more instructive. Here is a ruling party that was for the past two years engaged in an anti-BJP slanging match, has a large contingent in the Lok Sabha, and yet was isolated in the assembly elections. This isolation can easily force the TMC to rethink its strategy regarding the BJP. The second lesson is that state parties would align with the so-called all-India parties only when the latter do not have much strength to unsettle state-level political equations.

Actress Soha Ali Khan, who is married to actor Kunal Khemu, said that falling in love with an actor is not an easy task as it comes with “certain advantages and disadvantages.” Soha and Kunal got engaged in July 2014 in Paris and married in Mumbai in January 2015. Earlier this year, the couple shot down divorce rumours with Soha giving out a message that the bond between them is “solid.” The actress also shared that her mother and veteran actress Sharmila Tagore questioned her decision to get married to an actor saying that it will complicate her life. “Well, my mother said ‘Why are you marrying an actor,

it’s going to complicate your life.’ I happen to fall in love with an actor and it comes with certain advantages and disadvantages,” Soha said in a statement. She went on to explain and said: “The advantages of course are they are very sympathetic to the fact that you travel a lot, that you work late nights and that you

have to pretend to fall in love regularly with people on screen. The disadvantages are that they do the same thing, which can be frustrating.” Soha, whose last big screen appearance was in Ghayal Once Again, in which she featured alongside actor Sunny Deol, also said that “romancing” onscreen has a role to play in it.

Agency | New York Fast food giant McDonald’s may be planning to outsource jobs to India as part of a $500 million cost reduction plan it announced last November, a media report said. A report in the New York Post said McDonald’s is shedding jobs as part of a $500 million cost reduction spearheaded by Chief Executive Steve Easterbrook. “McDonald’s is also moving some functions to India in what could be a larger controversial push toward outsourcing,” it quoted sources familiar with the company’s plans as saying. A regional office in Columbus, Ohio is among the first casualties of the cost-cutting. McDonald’s described the facility’s closing as part of “plans to permanently restructure its operations and eliminate a number of roles,” in a May 13 letter the company sent to city officials. The layoffs will begin in July and end by December, it said. The 70 workers at that facility provide support services to restaurants, including accounting functions, which may be moving to an Indian firm, say the sources.

The BCCI on Saturday suspended and issued show cause notices to the top Goa Cricket Association officials, who were arrested for alleged misappropriation of organisation funds, and initiated a probe of its own against them. GCA president Chetan Dessai and secretary Vinod Phadke, who are also part of important committees of BCCI, along with treasurer Akbar Mulla were arrested earlier this week by police for alleged misappropriation of Rs 3.13 crore belonging to the organisation. BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke said in a statement: “It has been widely reported in the media that the President,

Hon. Secretary and Hon. Treasurer of the Goa Cricket Association have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code for serious allegations in connection with misappropriation of large sums of money of the Goa Cricket Association. Two of the above members also work as functionaries of the BCCI representing their state cricket association on certain important com-

mittees of the BCCI. Given the serious nature of the allegations, the BCCI has decided to investigate the said allegations as well and has accordingly issued show cause notices to the President and the Hon. Secretary of the Goa Cricket Association, under the Memorandum and Rules and Regulations of the BCCI (‘Rules’), as to why action should not be taken against them as per the Rules of BCCI.”

Sumit, on the other hand, got the better of Trinidad’s Andrew Fermin 3-0. The 23-year-old will be up against eighth seed Juan Carlos Carrilo Palacio of Colombia in his second-round contest. “Sumit was very dominant all through and did not have to stretch himself much to get this win. His performance was throughly clinical,” Sandhu said.

However, it was curtains for Dheeraj Rangi (60kg) after he went down to top seed Lindolfo Garza of Mexico in a hard-fought bout. The Indian lost 1-2. “Dheeraj’s loss can only be called bad luck because he gave it his all. He was brilliant with his uppercuts and it is unfortunate that he ended on the losing side,” Sandhu said. The tournament has 39 qualifying spots up for grabs — two in the 49kg category, five each in 52kg, 56kg, 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, 75kg and 81kg, and one each in 91kg and +91kg. Over 400 boxers from more than 100 countries are vying for these slots in the final qualifying tournament for amateur boxers. India have not sent any entry in the 56kg category as Shiva Thapa has already qualified for the Rio Games during the Asian qualifiers in March.

The research found that in men with a BMI of 20 and over, the risk of heart failure increased by 16% with every BMI unit, after adjustments for factors that could affect the findings, such as age, year of enlistment into the Swedish armed forces, other diseases, parental education, blood pressure, IQ, muscle strength and fitness. Annika Rosengren of the University of Gothenburg, who led the research, said, “Although most studies define a normal weight as having a BMI between 18.5 and 25, this is probably not an appropriate definition in the young, most of whom are naturally thin. This may be why we see an increase in the risk of heart failure starting at a fairly low BMI level. However, it was surprising to see the very steep increase in risk with increasing body weight above a BMI of 20.” Rosengren noted, “Given the global trend for growing numbers of teenagers to be overweight and obese, our findings suggest that heart failure, which in this study occurred at the relatively early average age of about 47 may well become a major threat to health worldwide.

Both federations could face sanctions for fans from their countries “throwing objects and setting off fireworks”, a statement read. Croatia faces additional charges

over alleged “racist behaviour”, while Turkey faces charges over supporters invading the pitch. The incidents occurred on Friday during the Spain vs Turkey and Czech Republic vs Croatia matches. The hearing will take place on Monday. The Croatia game in St Etienne was held up for several minutes after its fans threw flares on to the pitch and began fighting among themselves. Eight flares and other objects landed on the

pitch near to riot police, who had been deployed in front of the section housing Croatia fans. The trouble broke out in the dying minutes of a game that Croatia were leading 2-1. The final score was 2-2. Croatia, sanctioned three times during the qualifying competition, is already facing a disciplinary hearing on Tuesday after fans threw flares and ran on to the pitch during the team’s opening match at the finals against Turkey in Paris.
