Rohtak erupts in joy after local girl Sakshi Malik scripts history

Wrestler Sakshi makes India proud (H.S.) | New Delhi

The wait is finally over. As Sakshi Malik knelt on the wrestling mat with the Indian flag draped around her, it was a moment of great joy—Malik had won India its first medal, a bronze, at the 2016 Rio Olympics. She is the first female wrestler from India—and the fourth Indian woman—to win a medal at the Olympics. The bronze medal match, like the other four matches Malik was involved in at Rio, was full of action and grit. Malik went five points down against Kyrgyzstan’s Aisuluu Tynybekova, but that did not deter her. In the second period of the match, Malik fought back with relentless attacks, and with nine seconds remaining on the

Sakshi Malik became an instant celebrity, thanks to her podium finish at the Rio Olympics. Her triumph is a social commentary on Haryana, where women wrestlers are winning laurels, despite the overt male chauvinism and skewed gender ratio

clock, she had tied the score. Tynybekova tried a takedown in the final seconds, but Malik defended and then countered with her own successful takedown to win the match 8-5. In her thrilling opening bout, she came back from 0-4 down, to win 5-4, scoring her final two points in the last seconds of the match. Then, she won her round of 16 match coming from 0-3

down, with a spectacular takedown that earned her four points. The only match she lost was a crucial one, the quarter-final, where she had no answer to Russia’s Valeria Koblova, who won 9-2. Koblova qualified for the final, paving the way for Malik through repechage. Malik won her first repechage bout, against Mongolia’s Orkhon, in a dominating fashion

(12-3) to advance to the medal match. Malik has plenty of experience in fighting the odds. She was born in a village called Mokhra, near Rohtak in Haryana. Wrestling is seen as a quintessentially male sport in India. In most local wrestling tournaments, women are not allowed even as spectators. But Haryana, which has the most skewed gender ratio in the country, is also the centre of a revolution in getting women into wrestling. The two other women representing India in wres-

tling at Rio also come from a Haryana village—Babita and Vinesh (who lost her quarter-final match after a torn ligament) are cousin sisters. They were brought up by wrestling coach Mahavir Singh Phogat after Vinesh’s father was murdered in a land dispute. Mahavir has four daughters of his own, and two he adopted after his brother’s death—all six are wrestlers. (The oldest of the six, Geeta, was the first woman to represent India in wrestling at the London Olympics in 2012.)

PV Sindhu fell to her knees screaming in joy. She had shown remarkable patience the entire 54 minutes of the match to edge out Wang Yihan, the Chinese silver medallist in London 2012, 22-20, 21-19 in the quarterfinals at Rio. “One of the best moments of my career,” she declared in triumph. Those were not empty words. Getting past the world No 2, that too in straight games, was very impressive. But Sindhu

With injured London bronze medallist Saina Nehwal eliminated in the group stages and Kidambi Srikanth giving a tough fight to Chinese double Olympic champion Lin Dan before narrowly going down in three sets in the men’s singles quarterfinals on Wednesday, Indian badminton’s medal hopes lie on Sindhu’s shoulders.

The Debt We Owe To Sakshi Malik, Other Indian Women Champs

The boy wonder from Haryana, Virender Sehwag, said it best as Twitter exploded in a flurry of congratulations as Sakshi Malik overnight won India’s first bronze at the Rio Olympics in the 58 kg freestyle wrestling category. Not only has India’s new girl wonder forced Shobhaa De - who infamously said a week or so ago that the “goal of Team India at the Olympics: Rio jao. Selfies lo. Khaali haat wapas aao. What a waste of money and opportunity” - to eat her words, she also did it in style. @TheSakshiMalik is only the fourth Indian woman, after Karnam Malleswari in weightlifting, Mary Kom in boxing and Saina Nehwal in badminton, to win an Olympic medal for India. In fact, the quartet of Sakshi Malik, Dipa Karmakar, Lalita Babar and PV Sindhu - still in the race, having beaten World No. 2 Wang Yihan, 22-20 and 21-19 in 54 minutes to enter the semi-final in the Badminton singles - have with their extraordinary grit shown the rest of India the stuff they are capable of. These are #IndiasDaughters, dipping into their extraordinary reserves of strength and stamina and coming back to fight each time someone pushes them down. They are capable of erasing the stigma perpetrated by empty tradition and unchallenged patriarchy on a daily basis. These girls don’t need the patronising sentiments of “Raksha Bandhan” or any other celebration that ostensibly requires male sustenance. They have beaten back the accident of birth - in Haryana and Punjab, feeding the female newborn a pinch of salt so she dies of her own accord is common practice - and the misogyny of everyday life to get here. Right to the very top. Just listen to the stories of these women who never let the years and years of poverty daunt their spirit. Their fierce determination to succeed has made each of them a winner, medal or no medal. Dipa Karmakar, 23, who lost the bronze in the gymnastics vault by a whisker, says she’s now determined to win in the next Olympics. By now everyone knows the story of the flat-footed girl from Agartala whose coach and father-figure Bisheswar Nandi urged her to consider the Produnova vault because he realised the extraordinary risk involved only matched the girl’s extraordinary courage. So Nandi built Dipa her first practice handspring with duct-tape, scooter parts and a little bit of spit. Like Dipa’s father, who was a weightlifter, Pusarla V Sindhu’s parents were volleyball players. Pullela Gopichand, a former world badminton champion told the BBC that “She never gives up, and that’s her best quality.” Sindhu, 21, will meet Japan’s sixth seed Nozomi Okuhara, 21, in the semis later on Thursday. Lalita Shivaji Babar, only the third Indian woman to make it to an athletics final in an Olympic Games - she ran the 3000 m steeplechase - and the first to qualify since PT Usha in 1984, began running as a child because she realised that winning races brought in precious prize money that could be used to help her impoverished family in Maharashtra’s drought-prone Satara district. According to a Stanford Business School blog, Lalita Babar, “as a youngster, she ran - not walked - four kilometres everyday to her school and back. As a teenager, she ran to faraway wells to fetch water for the 17 people that she shared a home with. She ran through the fields as she went about her chores on the farm. She ran barefoot and on kinds of roads.” At 9:19:76, Lalita shaved an incredible seven seconds off her own national record to qualify for the steeplechase final.

We Are Separated, Says Arbaaz Khan Regional language film industry Again About Status With Malaika is booming: Neeraj Pandey

(H.S.) | Mumbai In March, celebrity couple Malaika Arora and Arbaaz Khan issued a joint statement saying they were separated - a friend later claimed that the statement was released without Malaika’s consent but cast no doubt

on the truth of the stated separation. Now, some five months later, Arbaaz Khan is reconfirming that they are, indeed, separated. The actor-producer as saying, “At this point of time we are not together, we are separated, and that’s about it.” The need for verification seems to

have arisen from pictures of Arbaaz and Malaika celebrating Eid with the Khans, posted on their social media accounts in July. Tabloid reports were hopeful of a reconciliation but it appears to have simply been wishful thinking. After Eid, Malaika and son Arhaan were pictured on holiday in the Maldives, while Arbaaz was photographed in Goa with a woman later identified as local entrepreneur and model Yellow Mehra. “We are taking out time to figure out our lives.” It also called for privacy, saying that speculation about the state of the couple’s marriage was ‘confusing and disturbing’ for their families.

The director’s next film ‘M.S. Dhoni—The Untold Story’, already dubbed in Tamil and Telugu, will be the first Hindi biopic to get a Marathi release. Filmmaker Neeraj Pandey’s upcoming biopic M.S. Dhoni—The Untold Story, which is set to be dubbed in Marathi, says he is excited with the local language release as the regional language film industry is booming. The film, based on Indian cricket skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, has already been dubbed in Tamil and Telugu. This would be the first time a Hindi biopic is getting a Marathi release. “The love for M.S. Dho-

ni in this country is unparalleled. Through this film, our effort is to show his life, his journey, his struggle... The regional language film industry is booming and the set of audiences seeing local language content is fairly different than those watching Hindi cinema,” Pandey said in a statement. The Baby helmer adds that Dhoni’s life is an “universal story”. “It

transcends languages, people across the country love him for his work towards our motherland and we are excited to present Dhoni’s life closer to his fans through these local language releases,” he added. Co-produced by Arun Pandey and Fox Star studios, MS Dhoni— The Untold Story, which stars Sushant Singh Rajput, is set to release on September 30.

The makers are planning to release the teaser in the second week of September, while the film is set to hit the screens this Diwali.

Actor Kunal Kapoor is presently shooting for his upcoming magnum opus film Veeram. As a surprise, the makers have released the first look poster of Veeram. Going by the poster, actor Kunal Kapoor looks stunning as warrior. Directed by Jayaraj, the film is based on the infamous warrior Chanthu Chekavar. The film is being made in Malayalam, Hindi and English. Set in 13th century of Kerala, the film resuscitates the real life character who was made famous through folklore literature and songs. Hence, cautious about the script and the content, Jayaraj has brought on board Holly-

wood technicians to supervise the action, makeup, music and colouring departments of the film. As for the music, Jayaraj has roped in composer Jeff Rona, who has been part of films like Phantom, Traffic and Prince of

Egypt while Jeff Olm of Zodiac, Spiderman and Titanic fame is the colourist of the film. Meanwhile, Kunal Kapoor, who was to shoot some breathing-taking action sequences, was accompanied by a personal trainer throughout the film.

Karthi-starrer Tamil period horror-thriller Kaashmora is making news across the film industry and for all the right reasons. The first look of the film’s poster, which was unveiled on Thursday, has caught the attention of audiences for the actor’s portrayal of a tyrant. The poster, which was unveiled on Twitter, has Karthi sporting a bald and a menacing look. “In the period portion, Karthi will be seen playing a tyrant and it’s for this role he shaved his head to sport a menacing look. He will be seen in this character for about 30 minutes in the film,” a source from the

film’s unit said. “It’s unlike any role he’s played so far in his career. He essays three characters in the film — Kaashmora and Rajnayak. The makers have decided to keep the third character a secret. The film is based on black magic and there are also portions of comedy, romance and action,” he added. “The war portion

With 26 days now left for his three-year term at the RBI to draw to a close, Rajan had on Wednesday said he was “open” to the idea of an extension, but talks with the government had not reached a stage to consider the prospect. Rajan, who is going back to academics after his term ends on September 4, also said that if the people who attacked him had the power, they could have stopped him.

Govt imposes anti-dumping duty on cold-rolled flat steel items from China, South Korea

Agency | New Delhi India has slapped anti-dumping duty on certain cold-rolled flat steel products from four nations including China and South Korea to guard domestic industry from cheap imports. An anti-dumping duty of the difference between the landed value of the steel products and US $594 per tonne will be levied, a Finance Ministry notification said. The government had previously imposed anti-dumping duty on import of hot-rolled flat products of alloy or non-alloy steel from China, Japan, Korea, Russia, Brazil and Indonesia. That duty, valid for six months, was the difference between the landed value and the respective prescribed value which is US $474 per tonne and US $557 per tonne. The anti-dumping duty imposed on cold-rolled flat products of alloy or non-alloy steel from China, Japan, South Korea and Ukraine too would be for six months. The anti-dumping duty was imposed on recommendation of the Directorate General of Anti Dumping (DGAD), an arm of Commerce Ministry.

NASA To Give $1M To Anyone Who Could Make Its Robots Mars-Ready

Agency | Washington NASA’s Space Robotics Challenge is now open for registration, officials said. The competition was created with the purpose of helping develop the capabilities of NASA’s humanoid robots to assist astronauts in their journey to Mars. A prize of $1 million will be awarded to teams who can program a virtual robot, which was modeled after NASA’s Robonaut 5 (R5) robot, to complete a series of tasks in a simulated Mars habitat, NASA officials said. “Precise and dexterous robotics, able to work with a communications delay, could be used in spaceflight and ground missions to Mars and elsewhere for hazardous and complicated tasks, which will be crucial to support our astronauts,” Monsi Roman, program manager of NASA’s Centennial Challenges, said in a statement. “NASA and our partners are confident the public will rise to this challenge, and are excited to see what innovative technologies will be produced.”

4th Test: India look to retain top spot, create history in West Indies (H.S.) | Trinidad

India will retain their top spot in the world rankings if they beat West Indies in the fourth test in Trinidad that starts on Thursday. Captain Virat Kohli’s men, moved up the ladder in the International Cricket Council rankings after Australia suffered a 3-0 whitewash in Sri Lanka, will relentlessly probe for weaknesses in the West Indies team, says fast bowler Ishant Sharma. India lead the series 2-0 heading into the final game at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain. “If we win the next match we will be the number one Test team in the world and there can be nothing better than that,” Sharma told Indian cricket board television. “Test cricket is such a format where you can never be complacent. This is a young team and we want to reach (top

spot).” India have dominated the series, overcoming the loss of an entire day due to rain to win the third Test. A day was also lost to bad weather in the second match but West Indies on that occasion rescued a draw. India have shown a willingness to change their line-up to suit the conditions, using 15 players in the first three tests to demonstrate their depth. Pace bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar was among three players brought in for the third game and justified his inclusion with a brilliant

match-winning spell, taking five for 33 in the first innings. For the West Indies, Trinidad offers a chance to salvage some pride and show the cricket world their well-documented decline has been overstated. Inconsistency has been a huge problem with most of their batsmen making a decent score here and there but also getting dismissed cheaply as often as not. Marlon Samuels, for example, has made 51, 37 and 48 and has also gone for one, nought and 12.

Amid increasing speculation that Dipa Karmakar has been recommended for the Rajiv Khel Ratna Award, the Indian trailblazing gymnast has made a modest plea urging the authorities to confer a Dronacharya award to her coach Bishweshwar Nandi instead. “It is a big honour that I have been recommended for the Khel Ratna. I would have been happier if I had fetched a medal for my country. But I want my coach Bishweshwar Nandi to be conferred with the Dronacharya award as it was only because of him that I was able to give such a performance in Rio,” Dipa told agency. She then played out the remaining seven holes on the front nine at par, and then climbed into the top 10 of the leaderboard for the first time with a birdie on the 10th. Aditi fired her third birdie at the 14th, while Ciganda carded a double-bogey on the 15th to slip from the top of the leaderboard. However, she held her nerves to finish with 3-under 68. Talking about her opening-round, Aditi said, “At the end of the day, just fall back on your routine, and just go out there and play golf. Dipa’s fourthplace finish in the individual vault final at the Rio Olympics is India’s best performance in the event at an international competition. The diminutive gymnast, who vaulted into limelight with her death defying leap, had created history when she became the first Indian gymnast to enter the final on her debut at the quadrennial multi-discipline games after finishing

“They think you are a CID agent pretending to be a reporter,” says Piyush Sarvaiya. It is around 10 pm and at least 200 men, women and children, crowd the 20 feet between the taxi and me. The air smells of sweat and Mawa (chewing tobacco). Some of the older men are saying something to Piyush about me in Gujarati. “Because you slept in the village for a few nights. You tuck your

shirt in, wear shoes and speak in English to somebody in Delhi.” But that’s my editor, I try to explain. “I believe you, they don’t.

There are rumors about undercover police agents and BJP spies keeping an eye on our family,” Piyush says. Behind the

‘AAP Gujarat promoting anti-brahman sentiment’ Sunvilla News | Gandhinagar

Aam Adami Party (AAP) head office in Navrangpura was vandalized by a little-known body, Brahm Padkaar (a forum of brahmans) over the AAP Una president, Sangita Chapda’s allegedly anti-brahman remarks. Ambarish Jani, advocate and president of Brahm Padkaar, took responsibility for attacking the AAP office. Jani said they had alsorequested AAP Gujarat leader, Kanubhai Kalsariya, and the party’s all-India chief Arvind Kejriwal to take action against Sangita Chapda who had allegedly abused brahmans. “The Gujarat Government has also not taken any action against her despite an FIR being registered against her,”

Jani said. “Hence, we protested at AAP office. We demand strict action against the AAP Una leader. We are not against any party or individual but will not tolerate anti-brahman remarks. We are not associated with any party,” he said. AAP Gujarat spokesperson Harshil Nayak said that the BJP is terribly upset with the rapidly increasing popularity of AAP in Gujarat. “AAP raised its voice against atrocities on Patidar, Dalits and others by Gujarat’s BJP govern-

ment,” Nayak alleged. “A frustrated BJP sent anti-social elements to our office to attack us. Navrangpura police station is just 100 meters from our office but despite this attack no one turned up to protect us,” Nayak said. AAP spokesperson said that within 24 hours of Arvind Kejriwal’s statement that jungle raj prevails in Gujarat, the BJP had proved it. “AAP will not get frightened by this attack. We will fight back to defeat BJP in the 2017 elections,” Nayak said.

When event management

firm insisted that they should be paid rest of the promised amount Naynaba filed police complaint against the firm. Taluka police station’s K.J. Chauhan and staff are probing into the matter. suspicion and the stares is tale of resistance to caste oppression in this village in western Gujarat, where the Sarvaiyas settled 200 years ago. They were pitchforked to the national limelight last month after four Dalit men were flogged by alleged cow-protection vigilantes in Una, sparking nationwide protests. The anti-caste protests – and a march from Ahmedabad to Una – have been widely hailed as an important moment in India’s fight against caste. But for the families of the victims, the resistance is mixed with fear of an impending backlash from dominant castes and a growing feeling that that they are being watched. Clan members, who had dispersed across Saurashtra over generations, are now hurriedly rebuilding forgotten relationships and going into a huddle. Their fears came true on Monday when groups of Dalits were attacked by dominant-caste mobs on their way from a mega gathering at Una.

1. How does it feel to be a part of SAB tv’s Taarak mehta ka ooltah chashmah ? It feels really nice to be a part of the show. Eight years have gone by and we did not even realise it, we have become a big happy family here. There’s just something else about working with the team here, a different type of humour is created while we work together and coordinate with each other. Like when Sridevi won her National Award for Chandni she had mentioned that it is not just her award and that she could only win it because of her team. Similarly, our show’s success also is due to all hands coming together in making the show. The team we have here, right from the Spot boys, writers, producer to artistes and even the audiences’ love is responsible for our success. The love has grown slowly over the years and we have been a witness to that. People love us, love the characters we play, recognise us instantly where ever we go. 2. How excited are you on the completion of 2000 episodes? Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah sets is always full of life and happiness, we are excited about adding that one more ‘zero’ to the count. We have always been excited and have always celebrated all our feats like when we completed 100, 500, 1000 episodes. We were very sure that we would touch another milestone of 2000 episodes. We also have our audiences’ blessings and this makes us really happy.

3. How has your experience been shooting with all the co actors? It is indeed a big happy family here on the sets; we have a blast working together. Even if you are upset for some reason or the other, you will forget all your sorrows once you meet the team and work with them. 4. Your message to the fans on the occasion of completing 2000 episodes I feel blessed on having received so much love and affection from fans every-

Gujarat govt, Railways ink pact to develop Surat station Sunvilla News | Surat

This tri-party agreement was signed here today in the presence of Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel and Surat mayor Asmita Siroya.

The Railways, Gujarat government and Surat Municipal Corporation have signed an agreement to develop Surat station under the Public Private Partnership model. This tri-party agreement was signed here today in the presence of Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel and Surat mayor Asmita Siroya. Prabhu told reporters that private investment is the best way to expedite the upgradration of railway stations in the country. “This station will be India’s first and distinctive railway station upon it’s completion. It will also have a multilayer park having a slew of facilities, which are usually found in airports. I am sure that it will turn

out to be a tourist destination,” the Minister said. “This project will be carried out under PPP model, as the government alone can not bear all the expenditure. If we do so, we have to raise taxes to collect the required capital. Thus, the best way is to involve private players. For this project, 36 business entities have already shown their interest,” said

Kathiria. The move came after PM Modi lambasted the self proclaimed Gau Rakshaks who have opened their shops in the name of cow protection. Further working on PM

Modi’s concerns for cow protection, the Ayog has decided to run an awareness campaign to prevent cow deaths from food discarded in plastic bags. “Hundreds of cows die every year after eating plastic. Many panjrapols and gaushalas have developed facilities to operate on cows to remove the plastic from their bodies. Veterinary formulas are now available to help cows vomit out or egest plastic. People need to be

where. I would like to thank them on this occasion; it would not have been possible without their support. 5. Any favourite moment/ episode you have from the show that you remember fondly? A huge advantage we have while working on the show is that a lot of Bollywood celebrities come to visit us on the sets for some collaboration. It is good fun when that happens as we get to meet them and even chat with them. Once during the Mahavir Jayanti special episode, I remember we had got a real gold idol of Lord Mahavir idol on the set and I had got a chance to hold it in my hands. I really cherish that moment since I’m a believer in Lord Mahavir too and feel blessed about the experience.

Prabhu. The Minister further talked on increasing non-railway income to boost development in the railway sector. “We have only two income options at present- freight and passenger fares. In Japan, one third of railway income comes from non-railway operations. We need to understand and incorporate such business model to raise funds.

Gujarat To Authenticate Genuine ‘Gau Rakshaks’ With I-Cards Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Days after Prime Minister Narender Modi appealed the states to prepare a dossier on ‘Gau Rakshaks’, the Gujarat Gau Seva Ayog has decided to authenticate Gau Rakashaks and give them I-cards to differentiate them from those who create nuisance in the name Gau Raksha (cow protection). “Considering PM Modi’s advice to the states to act against anti-social elements who

use the gau rakshak identity for anti-social activities, we have decided to initiate the process of authorizing gaurakshaks in co-ordination with the home department. There are around 500 panjrapols (cattle pounds) and gaushalas (cow shelters) which are directly funded by the government and some 2,000 organizations run by welfare trusts. We plans to authorize persons associated with these organizations. We will rec-

ommend police verification of all such persons to exclude anti-social elements,” said former union minister and chairman of Gujarat Gau Seva Ayog, Dr Vallabh
