Congress asks workers not to come to Delhi when Gandhis make court appearance

Have Sonia, Rahul decided to go to jail? The party said it has not taken any decision on the Gandhis not applying for bail and sources said the Congress will explore all legal remedies, which very much include bail Agency | New Delhi

There is a “crisis” in agriculture today due to deficient rainfall but comprehensive steps have been taken to help the farmers, government said in the Lok Sabha today. Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha said despite poor rains, production has increased by two per cent because farmers have diversified into areas like fishery and livestock.

The Congress on Thursday issued a rare public appeal to its leaders and workers, asking them not to come to the national capital on Saturday — the day party chief Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi appear in court in the National Herald case. The move is seen as an attempt to send out a message that it was not making the court appearance a media spectacle. Party leaders, however, said they can only

advise and appeal and cannot prevent anyone from coming to Delhi or to its party headquarters 24, Akbar Road. Sources said the party considered the options of organising a show of strength or a solidarity parade to the court, but it was at the same time circumspect and cautious since it is a court matter and the party should not be seen as challenging the court. It has, however, asked all its MPs to be in Delhi on Saturday, although Leader of the Opposi-

tion Ghulam Nabi Azad insisted it was to ensure a healthy attendance in both the Houses next week. He, however, did not deny that all the MPs have been asked to come to AICC headquarters at

should not come to Delhi on 19th. No leader should come to Delhi. We are requesting all the leaders not to come to Delhi,” he said. The party said it has not taken any decision on the Gandhis not applying for bail and sources said the Congress will explore all legal remedies, which

very much include bail. “There are two days. There is still time (for the decision to be taken). To take bail or not these things cannot be said in a press conference. The decision will be taken on the spot and we will act in accordance with what advice the lawyers

will give,” Azad said. Azad said the party chief, vice-president and the entire leadership of the party have full faith in judiciary and the law of the land. “Whatever we shall have to do, whatever instruments we have to use, we will use” in the case, he said.

The conference of DGs and IGs: May the police force be with you

The annual conference of the directors general and inspectors general of police (DG/IG conference), beginning today in the Rann of Kutch, is significant not because it’s being held in Gujarat, and outside Delhi for the second time, but because it will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for all three days. The conference, organised by the Intelligence Bureau on behalf of the Union home ministry, discusses the common issues of state police forces and Central armed police forces and looks for strategies to face new challenges — the most critical areas being terrorism and insurgency, intelligence collection and sharing, investigative standards, force modernisation, human resource upgrade, etc. The most important and challenging task faced by the law enforcement authorities and intelligence agencies today is the collection and analysis of preventive intelligence and follow-up action, especially pertaining to terrorists and insurgents who pose a constant challenge to internal security. While there’s a dire need to improve the capability of the intelligence-collection machinery and upgrade its resources, the intelligence-sharing mechanism leaves a lot to be desired. Our intel, collected by state and Central agencies, still sits in silos. Apart from the fact that it’s often not analysed properly, the mania for getting credit drives the organisation having the intel to follow it up even if it doesn’t have the wherewithal. Our efforts in setting up the Natgrid, to build a secure sharing platform, have remained tied in knots despite huge investments. The DG/IG conference needs to discuss and find a way out of the current situation and lay down a roadmap for establishing a robust intel collection and sharing mechanism. The Central intelligence agencies have to strengthen their capabilities and also help states upgrade their machineries for collecting both human and technical intelligence. States also need to pick up on generalised inputs flowing to them and work on specific information, rather than ignoring it all as vague and non-actionable. The other important, but badly neglected, aspect of policing is criminal investigation. Standards have declined sharply in the last few years. Unfortunately, the socalled premier investigation agencies like state CIDs and the CBI are no exception. Apart from investigations and conclusions of trials taking an abnormally long time, these tend to fall flat in court, often attracting the judiciary’s wrath. On the other hand, investigation is no longer a coveted job in the states. The investigations in, say, the Aarushi Talwar or Sheena Bora murder cases, or the Salman Khan case, speak volumes about falling investigative standards.

QUOTE “The government has been taking measures to promote OF THE the internationalisation of the Indian Rupee,” - Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha said in the Lok Sabha DAY Bajirao Mastani Movie Review It’s confirmed: Mother Teresa to be made Catholic saint in September

Agency | New Delhi

Maratha history gets the full-on Sanjay Leela Bhansali treatment in Bajirao Mastani. The overwrought but impressive extravaganza elevates the legendary 18th century warrior-hero determined to establish Hindu rule across the subcontinent to the level of a selfless crusader for love in a climate of hate and bigotry. Bhansali fictionalizes several of Bajirao’s key battles but focuses more on the married Peshwa’s passion for Mastani, the beautiful and courageous half Rajput, half-Muslim princess of Bundelkhand. Every emotion in the film - be it love, longing or valour on the battlefield is translated into a grand and elaborate song-anddance routine. A couple of the musical set pieces do not ring true in a historical epic about a man

whose place in history is primarily as an unvanquished general. These are but minor aberrations in a sweeping love story that is mounted on such a grandiose scale and crafted with such vaulting zeal that eventually the smaller details cease to matter. Bajirao Mastani is, in many respects, Bhansali’s most subversive film to date. Its central message is that all religions preach love but love has no religion. Love, the film conveys via Irrfan Khan’s voice, is a religion

by itself and those that swear by its tenets become immortal like Bajirao and Mastani. Peshwa Bajirao, played with flair by Ranveer Singh, takes on the unbending clergy and his own angry family to uphold Mastani’s dignity after she arrives in Pune as his second wife. To liven up this “love story of a warrior”, Bhansali, as is his wont, rustles up a series of spectacular visuals, each as blindingly awash in red, russet and gold and bathed in light and shade as all the others.

Mother Teresa, celebrated for her work with the poor in Kolkata, is expected to be canonised in Rome on September 4 as part of the pope’s Jubilee year of mercy, according to the newspaper’s Vatican expert Stefania

The move comes after a panel of experts, convened three days ago by the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints, attributed a miraculous healing of a Brazilian man with multiple brain tumours to Mother Teresa, Avvenire reported. Teresa, who was born to Albanian parents in what is now Skopje in Mace-

donia, was known across the world for her charity work. She died in 1997 at the age of 87. Nicknamed the ‘Saint of the Gutters’, she dedicated her life to the poor, the sick and the dying in the slums of Kolkata, founding the Missionaries of Charity order of nuns in 1950. Former Australian batsman Mike Hussey denies World Twenty20 comback rumours Agency | Sydney

Agency | New Delhi The Competition Commission is examining a fresh complaint of alleged unfair business practices made against cement makers, CCI chairman Ashok Chawala said today. The development comes against the backdrop Compat’s quashing over Rs 6,300 crore fine imposed on them by the regulator in a previous case. Recently, realtors’ apex body CREDAI filed a complaint with the Commission against cement manufacturers alleging price cartelisation. On the sidelines of an event here, Chawla said the Competition Commission of India is looking into a fresh complaint filed against cement companies. The Confederation of Real Estate Developer’s Associations of India (CREDAI), which has about 10,000 members, approached the CCI against the Cement Manufacturers’ Association (CMA) in late September. In October, CREDAI said the association has filed complaint against the CMA as prices have risen sharply despite low demand for cement.

Facebook looks to garner support for its Free Basics initiative

Agency | Bangalore With over 125 million users in India, Facebook, the largest social networking site is pushing hard to garner support for its Free Basics initiative — formerly Internet.org in India, which is alleged to be against the net neutrality principles. Facebook users are getting notifications from the company since Tuesday urging them to support the Free Basics Initiative – with a pre-written message claiming that Free Basics is in danger in India and their support would be sent to Trai as part of their new consultation paper regarding differential data pricing. The message claims, “Free Basics gives people access to vital services like communication, healthcare, education, job listings and farming information – all without data charges. It helps those who can’t afford to pay for data, or who need a little help getting started online. And it’s open to all people, developers and mobile operators.”

HTC One X9 Leaked in Fresh Images, Video Ahead of Launch

Agency | New Delhi HTC’s unannounced One X9 smartphone has been leaked in a bunch of high-resolution images showing the handset in its full glory ahead of launch. The images come courtesy of a Chinese publication. In a separate post, another Chinese blog going one step ahead has even published an in-depth review of the handset that even includes a video, apart from more images. With the number of leaks increasing, we can expect the Taiwanese handset maker to launch the One X9 soon. The company recently teased launch of a new device which is likely the One X9. In the new images, the One X9 can be seen sporting a brushed aluminium unibody design, similar to the HTC One A9. The handset is likely to sport HTC’s BoomSound dual front-facing speakers, something the One A9 missed out on. The One X9 rear can be seen featuring the camera on one side of the handset.

Retired test batsman Mike Hussey has laughed off suggestions he could return to Australian colours for next year’s World Twenty20 after scoring an unbeaten 80 to lead the Sydney Sixers to victory in the domestic Big Bash League. The left hander, who retired from international cricket two years ago, will be on the flight to India for the March 8-April 3 tournament as a coaching consultant to the Australia team. Shane Watson was one observers

of the 59-ball knock who suggested his 40-year-old Sixers team mate would not look out of place back out in the middle in the international game but Hussey was having none of it. “No, I wouldn’t have thought so,” Hussey laughed. “I’m happy to try

and help out as much as I can off the field. “We’ve got so much talent in this country and I’m excited to be working with the Australian team. “It’s the one trophy we don’t have in the cabinet, so there’s a lot of motivation for the team. “Everyone I talk to around Cricket Australia, it’s the one they really want. If I can help out in some small way, I’d be ecstatic.” Australia’s best showing at the World Twenty20 was reaching the final of the 2010 version, when they lost to England.

Shahid Afridi hopes Pakistan beat India to win World Twenty20 title Agency | Karachi

Pakistan’s Twenty20 captain Shahid Afridi has expressed that a challenging draw would motivate his side to lift the coveted World Twenty20 title for the second time and in the process break the hoodoo against arch-rival India. Pakistan, the 2009 champions, have been placed along with hosts India, Australia, New Zealand and a yet to be decided qualifier in Group 2 of the Super Ten round of the pinnacle event, which starts from March 8. Pakistan have never beaten India in either a traditional one-day World Cup or the newer World Twenty20. India were crowned the T20 champions of the in-

augural edition after defeating Pakistan in 2007. Afridi admitted they have a tough draw but added that he was hopeful that the challenge would pump-up his team to win the title and beat India on

the way, Sport24 reported. The flamboyant all-rounder insisted that he didn’t want to live in history and called on his side to overcome mistakes they make while playing against India in big events.

Ajinkya Rahane slams 114 for Mumbai in losing cause Agency | Mumbai

India batsman Ajinkya Rahane likes challenges. He enjoys when he has his back against the wall. The way the Mumbaikar bounced back after four failures in the Test series against South Africa, scoring back-to-back hundreds in the last Test in New Delhi, is ample proof. Only a few months back, Indian ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni had raised doubts about Rahane’s abilities and limitations in limited-overs cricket. On Thursday, Rahane once again answered his critics in style, scoring a 112-ball 114 batting at No. 4 in his first game for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The knock helped Mumbai pile a 301/9 in 50, but it wasn’t enough as Rajasthan chased it down with five wickets to spare in the Group A league encounter in Hyderabad. Put into bat, Mumbai lost two quick wickets of opener Shashank Singh (two) and Shreyas Iyer (0). Opener Akhil Herwadkar (30) could not capitalise on the good start by getting out to seamer Pankaj Singh, while skipper Aditya Tare

SPORTS ROUNDUP India vsAustralia: Ravindra Jadeja set for comeback, Murali Vijay in fray too Agency | New Delhi

Back in form with an impressive performance against South Africa in the recently-concluded Test series, Ravindra Jadeja is likely to make a comeback when the national selectors meet here on Saturday to pick the Indian squad for the upcoming limited-overs series in Australia. India will play five ODIs and three T20 internationals in Australia with the first game starting on January 12. Three other players, who could be under spotlight, are fit-again pacer Mohammed Shami, senior-most pacer Ishant Sharma and veteran batsman Murali Vijay, who has started batting in the middle-order in one-dayers for Tamil Nadu and also could be a back-up

opener for an out of form Shikhar Dhawan. The selectors will pick the squad, to be captained by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, keeping the ICC World T20 in mind although atleast 12 playes are likely to be automatic picks in both the formats. With 23 wickets in his comeback against the Proteas, along with crucial runs (109 runs), the 27-year-old Saurashtra all-rounder should be back in the ODI squad after six months and likely to beat

Axar Patel for the second spinner’s slot with Ravichandran Ashwin being an automatic choice. Ishant Sharma, who has had a good season as the strike bowler in Test matches is likely to get the nod in limited overs after a gap of nearly one year. Ishant was being considered for the limited-overs series against South Africa but he pulled a hamstring during a Ranji match and was rested keeping in mind the Test series.

Cup, with Terry an integral part of the success. However, cracks in the relationship surfaced this season as the team’s form slumped, with the first signs appearing as early as August when Mourinho hauled Terry off at halftime during a 3-0 de-

feat to Manchester City. Despite their strained ties towards the end of Mourinho’s tenure, Terry had nothing but praise for his former boss in the wake of his sacking. “Thank You doesn’t seem enough. Sad sad day,” the Chelsea captain wrote.

a day in which fortunes ebbed and flowed, the valuable Mathews-Siriwardana pairing began when Sri Lanka were heading for trouble at 1214. Siriwardana was caught at first slip by Ross Taylor off the bowling of Boult, who claimed his second wicket three balls later when Kithuruwan Vithanage was caught by a diving Brendon McCullum at mid-off without scoring. Just before the rain came down, Rangana Herath was run out for four by a fine throw from Kane Wil-

liamson in the gully. With three wickets after tea, New Zealand enjoyed their most productive session after winning the toss and making Sri Lanka bat on a green pitch expected to be a bowler’s paradise. They could only manage two wickets in each of the first two sessions as Sri Lanka fought to atone for their 122-run loss in the first Test in Dunedin. In part the tourists were helped by New Zealand’s inconsistency with line and length, but they also played an aggressive game.

Rahane’s form and confidence was evident as he smacked 10 fours and two sixes. Yadav, on the other hand, gave able support from the other end by giving most of the strike to the senior pro. But Yadav could not go further and edged one to wicket-keeper Dishant Yagnik off Tanveerul-Haq after completing his half-century. Even as wickets kept falling at the

other end, Rahane held fort. He got out only after taking Mumbai past 270, with seamer Nathu Singh getting him edged caught to Yagnik. However, the target fell short as Rajasthan chased it down in 49 overs, thanks to half-centuries from Asho Menaria (86) and veteran Rajat Bharia (94). Brief Scores: Mumbai 301/9 in 50 overs (A Rahane 114, S Yadav 52, I Abdulla 31, A Herwadkar 30; P Singh 4/55, T-Ul-Haq 2/55) lost to Rajasthan 305/5 in 49 overs (R Bhatia 94*, A Menaria 86, P yadav 49, D Yagnik 40; A Nayar 2/28) by five wickets.

Trent Boult led a late New Zealand fight-back to leave Sri Lanka on 264-7 when rain ended play early on day one of the second Test on Friday. Three wickets in two overs after tea rocked Sri Lanka just as captain Angelo Mathews and Milinda Siriwardana were looking solid with a record fifth-wicket partnership. When rain halted play 23 overs short of the day’s scheduled 90, Mathews was unbeaten on 63 with Dushmantha Chameera yet to score. Siriwardana, in only his fourth Test, was out for 62 after joining Mathews for Sri Lanka’s record fifth-wicket partnership against New Zealand of 138, eclipsing the 133 set by Mahela Jayawardene and Hashan Tillakaratne in 2003. To avail of Rs 110 bonus, Gujarat cotton RSS seeks bonus for Gujarat cotton farmers to wade through rigorous process farmers who have sold their produce Rajkot Correspondent |

After Gujarat government announced a bonus of Rs110 per 20 kg of cotton, its farmers in the state stare at a “rigorous procedure” to avail of the benefit. Only those selling their produce to the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) are eligible for bonus. Steps taken by the CCI, a central government undertaking under the Union Ministry of Textiles, in the wake of scams in Telangana and Andra Pradesh have made the procedure to avail of bonus cumbersome. The CBI is investigating multiple cases in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana where middlemen and private moneylenders sold cotton to the CCI at Minimum Support

The Ahmedabad zonal unit of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested two Jalandhar-based businessmen in the Rs 17 crore commercial tax fraud case. DRI sleuths held Amarjeet Singh Jolly and Ashok Goyal, for claiming Rs 3.5 crore and Rs 1.5 crore in duty drawback by using fake bills. Both accused were sent to custody by a local court on Thursday. Earlier in October, DRI arrested two Ludhiana-based traders in the same case. In January this year, the Ahmedabad unit of DRI had detected commercial tax fraud of Rs 17 crore in exports of scaffoldings and seized 23 containers of two Jalandhar-based traders, one distributor and shipper at Mundra port. These traders, in connivance with a Gandhidham based Customs house agent, were

exporting scaffoldings outside India while the entries in Customs were made for clamps, nuts and bolts to avail extra benefits under the government’s export schemes. The accused had also created several fake companies and exported scaffoldings for the whole of year 2015 from Mundra port. “The Customs house agent helped these traders in preparing fake bills of entry by changing the description of goods. These traders exported scaffoldings worth more than Rs 100 crore. Going by they rules they should have got around Rs 4 crore as incentive and drawback but they availed much more than that,” added a DRI official. According to DRI officials, around 10 fake companies were created along with 300 fake identities of people running these companies.

Gujarat wants 25 years to move its lions to Madhya Pradesh sanctuary Correspondent | New Delhi

The environment ministry has poured cold water on demands for translocating lions from the Gir National Park in Gujarat to the Kuno-Palpur Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh, saying the process will take more than 25 years. In a response submitted in the Lok Sabha, environment minister Prakash Javadekar said the matter of relocating lions from Gujarat to Madhya Pradesh (both BJP-ruled states) was a “long-term action”, starting from preparing the translocation area in MP to identifying the lions in Gujarat. “The whole programme encompasses action for over 25 years,” Javadekar said in a written reply to a question asked

by two Congress Lok Sabha MPs – Kamal Nath and Jyotiraditya Scindia. Sources in the ministry said the Lok Sabha statement was made after consultation with experts, who were of the view that the translocation of lions was not immediately possible. “We don’t think Kuno is perfect to support a lion population as an issue of conflict with tigers was emerging,” a senior ministry official said, requesting anonymity. RSS farmers’ body Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) Thursday said small and marginal farmers, who have already sold their produce, may not benefit from the MSP bonus. It said that the Agriculture Produce Market Committees (APMCs) and the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) await a formal intimation from the government and the farmers will have to wait for some time to avail of the bonus”. “Had the government made the announcement in the beginning of the season, small and marginal farmers, who have been forced to sell their cotton at a low price, would have benefited. tigers that now call the Kuno-Palpur sanctuary home were brought in from the congested Ranthambore reserve in Rajasthan. Many wildlife experts believe the two big cats cannot co-exist in a small manmade sanctuary like Kuno. As pharmacologists meet call for research on gavya chikista Correspondent | Rajkot

As medical practitioners and researchers at international conference IPSCO 2015 called for thorough research on cow-product based therapies to dispel myths and science behind them, Gujarat Ayurved University (GAU) on Friday announced to set up a registry of observations made by ayurveda practitioners in the country for coordination in research. Dr Ashok Vadiya, the pioneer of reverse pharmacology appealed researchers to pick anecdotal evidence of success of panchgavya treatment up as beginning for their research. “The talk about cow did not begin after BJP came to power. Vinoba Bhave and Mahatma Gandhi were the ones who underlined the importance of cow in Indian life. But there is question as to whether gavya chikitsa is myth or reality. Myths are public dreams. Go-Gram is Indian reality. But we must find out effectiveness of the practices through research. There are anecdotes and they can be starting points of research. Gujarat should

take lead in gavya research,” the senior researcher said, while addressing gathering at a symposium on Gavya Chikita: Myths or Realityof IPSCON 2015. The IPSCON 2015, the threeday international meet and 48th annual conference Indian Pharmacological Society (IPS) began on Saurashtra University campus here on Friday. The meet is being organised by IPS, the apex organisation of pharmacologists in the country. Panchgavya means five cow products – milk, curd, ghee, urine and dung. Dr Vaiyda, who is also chairman of the organising committee of IPSCON 2015 further stated that there was dire need to record evidence of panch-

gavya treatment and standardisation of cow products. Responding to Dr Vaidya’s suggestion, GAU vice-chancellor Rajesh Kotecha said his university will establish a registry for research in panchgavya chikitsa. “In ayurveda, there are references about products of cow and guamutra. But they are here and there. For example, properties of milk and milk as a vehicle of medicine etc. For us Indian scientists also, it is a new area of looking at. There is experience, there is shraddha (faith) also, there are some clues. But we need to work more on it. So, I agree with Dr Vaidya’s reccommendation that we need to make a registry of observations, scientific evidence.
