February 20, 2016, Saturday

Newly elected president of Gujarat BJP Shri Vijay Rupani today delivering address at his installation function said he will sit at his office at party headquarters every Monday and Tuesday during 10.00 am to 6.00 pm and meet party workers from every corner of Gujarat. Rupani asked party workers to look at year 2017 Gujarat assembly general election

with Arjun’s focus on bird. He said small issues should be kept aside to achieve this Virat dream through which we will help Narendrabhai who is working hard at centre. Rupani hailed party’s victory in municipality and municipal corporation polls and described party’s defeat in panchayat polls as bruise. He remembered Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s words

that, ‘karyakarta kabhi harta nahi hain, jitata hai ya sikhta hai’. He also mentioned another line from Atalji, “Kabhi the hum akele, arre huye aaj hum itne, arre bhala tab nahi darre, to abb dar kaisa.” Rupani said, “many people while congratulating me also alert me that this is a difficult job, but I believe that the post of the president of BJP is Vikramaditya’s Sim-

Lawyer denies attacking Kanhaiya, leads march to counter JNU protest

Chauhan, who has been accused of leading the attack on journalists and students, denied that Kumar was attacked. “JNU students in black coats raised slogans at Gate No. 2. And no citizen of this country can bear anti-national slogans,” he said. “If they provoke and challenge our patriotism and attack us, we will definitely respond,” Chauhan added. The Supreme Court earlier transferred to the Delhi high court Kanhaiya Kumar’s petition seeking bail, as it said that the direct hearing of the bail plea bypassing the high court would set a wrong precedent.

hasan. Even if a common karyakarta sits there, the system of organization is so well set that he would gain strength, speed and justice.” Rupani thanked party for elevating a small party workers to this level. He remembered his early days when

he used to do wall painting for party campaign and also used to climb poles to tie banners. He said he was once into anti-Congress agitations and also went to jail under MISA. Rupani said it is only this party in which a small karyakarta can

become party president, elsewhere there are families. He recalled Atalji’s lines: Yeh pad nahin hai, yeh dayitva hai, Yeh pratishtha nahin hai, yeh pariksha hai,Yeh sanman nahin hai, yeh chunauti hai(this is not position but a responsibility, this is not fame but a test, this is not honor but a challenge). He said he has been agreed to take this challenge on the basis of these lines of Atalji and one crore party workers from across Gujarat who are honest, dedicated, hardworking and work day and night for nation. He said, power takes birth from organization, and the organization has to see that its ideological horizon is intact. He

said Ayodhya mein Ram, Yovako ko kaam, Kisano ko sahi dam, mehngai pe lagam are main highlights of agenda. It’s beginning of fascism of a kind’

What has happened at JNU can happen on any campus in Kolkata soon and the beginnings are already evident at Jadavpur University: This is how Marxist economist Prabhat Patnaik summed up the current scene at institutes. Patnaik was speaking at a protest convention, organised by teachers’ unions of all universities across the state, at Darbhanga Hall in Calcutta University. Posters saying, “Kanhaiya, I’m proud of you”, were pinned up in a show of solidarity by at least 300 college teachers gathered at the convention. “The situation at JNU is the result of blatant lies propagated by the Modi government. Why are thugs being let loose on a university? I see it as the beginning of fascism of a kind and reminds me of the 30s. I see it as a systematic attack on thinking, progressive students. This fire of repression, the tendency to gag dissent will spread to every institution that is known in the country as a centre of excellence,” said Patnaik. A former professor of economics at the Centre for Social Studies at JNU, Patnaik lives on the campus and was witness to the mayhem that unleashed since the day Kanhaiya Kumar gave his speech and was arrested. “Some students on the campus feel Afzal Guru’s hanging was the result of a misjudgement and they hold such meetings on the day of the hanging as an annual affair. No anti-national sentiment was ventilated. As Kanhaiya spoke, the ABVP started shouting slogans, suggesting the speech was anti-national... The speech is available in public domain. I dare all to point out what is anti-national there. The Delhi Police could not furnish any proof of Kanhaiya being anti-national. Perhaps to tighten the noose around JNU, home minister Rajnath Singh has stepped up the pitch about the university’s supposed links with LeT. Why should a country’s home minister have such a weak intelligence network?” Patnaik said. Probably Kanhaiya questioning the central ministers’ role in freedom fight and struggle against anti-colonial forces, drew their ire. and made them brand him anti-nationalist. “It is a fact those ruling at the Centre today were not there in the country’s anti-colonial struggle,” Patnaik added. Among the other speakers was Congress leader, JNU alumnus and JU faculty Om Prakash Mishra, who pointed at questioned why Kanhaiya’s full speech was not being publicised by the electronic media. and blamed the latter for playing a partisan role. He cited examples of several occasions when BJP leaders and parliamentarians met PDP leaders in Kashmir for a political understanding but kept it under the wraps. “We know followers of which ideology burnt the national flag. It is a historic reality that the BJP cannot escape,” Mishra said. He alluded to the ABVP when he said JNU students did not use swords to drive home a point. “They use logic and slogans, a political language that Modi doesn’t understand.

Neha Dhupia: There was a phase when I was aping other actresses

Agency | Mumbai ha Dhupia says there was a time when she was unhappy with her work and began following other actresses. Neha, who has earned critical acclaim for her performances in films like “Phas Gaye Re Obama” and “Delhi Heights”, said in the low phase of her career she decided to conform to the ways of the industry. When asked if there was a time when she was unhappy with the work she was doing, Neha said, “Yes

there was. I had started dressing like other actresses. I started wearing contact lenses because we were supposed to. I was doing everything that other actresses were doing. I was following a suit.” What held the actress together was the unpredictability in her life, as Neha said she had initially thought of retiring by the age of 30 and have a family in Rome. “But I’ve always had a mind of my own. I was educated to believe that I was going to become an IAS officer.

Ravi Shastri sets a strong precedent by his aggressive backing of MS Dhoni

Forex Reserves Up By $347 Million To $351 Billion

Agency | New Delhi The country’s foreign exchange reserves rose by $347.2 million to $351.831 billion in the week to February 12, helped by an increase in foreign currency assets (FCAs), according to the Reserve Bank. In the previous week, the reserves had surged by $2.332 billion to $351.484 billion in the reporting period. FCAs, a major component of overall reserves, increased by $ 1.581 billion to $330.019 billion in the reporting period, RBI said in a release. FCAs, expressed in dollar terms, include the effect of appreciation and depreciation of non-US currencies such as the euro, pound and the yen, held in the reserves. The gold reserves remained unchanged at $17.696 billion in the week. India’s special drawing rights with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) grew by $21.5 million to $4.061 billion in the week, while country’s reserve position with the fund declined by $1.255 billion to $54.2 million, the apex bank said.

Freedom 251 First Impression: It has nothing Indian about it!

Agency | Mumbai

Agency | New Delhi Every sportsman reaches an age where nothing but absolutely impeccable performances match after match will keep the naysayers at bay. The world seeks to breathe down the necks of those who par this threshold in terms of an imaginary age line. Even a single underperformance evokes a flood of opinions from fans and media calling for the necks of these players. Irrational as it may be, not many coaches or management come out in strong defence of these under-fire players. Ravi

Shastri has made a strong example by his vehement defence of MS Dhoni. At 34, nearing 35, Dhoni finds himself in an undesirable situation where there is a sword hanging over his head at every point. There is a critic prowling in every corner and given the density of India‘s population and the cricket madness that runs through the country’s veins, those critics have a collective appetite to bash a cricketer, far greater than in any other country. Criticism is good, be it in the field of cricket of

otherwise. It is what keeps people of power at bay. Deprive the society of the option to criticise and you end up with something like the tyranny, that is North Korea. However, it is a double-edged sword. Some of these so-called critics surface with the sole purpose of shredding a player. And once a player crosses a certain age limit, the frequency and intensity of these irrational criticisms surges dramatically. Dhoni is at that stage in his career now, drawing fiery flak for every little misstep he takes.

Consistency the watchword as Afridi gears up for final flourish

Agency | Dubai There are leaders and then there are those who lead. Shahid Afridi, for one, doesn’t need captaincy to command attention. Attend any practice session involving him to see how players, coaches, net bowlers, media gravitate towards his magnetic personality. As Andy Flower says, ‘Afridi is that guy that other people just like

to follow.’ At the Pakistan Super League, there’s always a nice easy going vibe in Peshawar’s practice sessions, something that was to be expected with Afridi at the helm. It reflects in the team’s position. Along with Quetta Gladiators, who Peshawar play in the playoffs, Afridi’s Zalmi have been the most dominant side in the tournament. Still, it hadn’t been the most productive

of tournaments for Afridi the player until recently and for good reason. Pakistan’s limited-overs skipper has had enough on his plate even without the added responsibility of leading Peshawar Zalmi in the inaugural edition of PSL. Pakistan have been on the move since the turn of the new year. They flew to New Zealand for a quick limited-overs series before travelling straight to Dubai for this T20 league. The 35-yearold Afridi, who will call time on his international career post next month’s ICC World T20 in India, has had selection responsibilities, media and corporate commitments to fulfil between all the back-to-back games and that takes a toll.

Playing in the four-pool, 14-team event and waking up to take on China’s second-string (Tian Houwei — No. 8) is still ranked one place above India’s best Srikanth — No. 9), the absolute clarity with which K Srikanth saw the situation at the Hyderabad event, went a long way in finally putting it across China when the two Asian biggies met on Thursday. Srikanth would reverse results of five straight defeats he’s suffered at the hands of China’s top player here Tian Houwei (Chen Long and Lin Dan didn’t fetch up in the Olympic year) to help India to its first-ever 3-2 win against China in a team event.

Kidambi Srikanth decodes Chinese puzzle Agency | New Delhi Two days back, an unknown company – Ringing Bells, shocked the world by launching a phone at throwaway price of just Rs 251 for which you can’t even afford a medium pizza these days. Even multiplexes charge more than that for 3D movies! Naturally the phone, which is named as Freedom 251, caught the attention of all, both in India and abroad. Freedom 251’s features were even more shocking for the price it is being offered. To start with, the phone offers Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system and is powered by a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor. The phone has a 4 inch IPS touchscreen and WVGA (800×480 pixels) resolution. It has 8 GB of internal memory, 1 GB RAM, a 1450 mAh battery, 3.2-megapixel rear camera and a 0.3-megapixel front camera, and supports dual SIMs. Strangely, even before the commencement of its full-fledged operation in India, Ringing Bells’s President Ashok Chadha has claimed that by the end of this year they will be able to capture 30 percent smartphone market share in India. But before I dwell into all the announcements made by the Ringing Bell’s top management lets me share my first impression of the device.

in Lajpor jail that started yesterday and various kinds of speculative news stories related to that airing on Gujarati TV channels. It is not exactly correct to attribute this act of violence to Patidar community, as opposition Congress has now some

hold in this community in Surat following victories in Municipal Corporation election. The incident could be a political attempt to create disturbance ahead of installation of new state BJP President today. Reacting to this incident Shri Vijay Rupani said this is a loss to people, as service like ST is operated through tax money. ST has suffered loss even earlier during this agitation. While agitation is right of citizens, damaging public property is not proper. Talks are going on at government level with community leaders and one should have patience till the time solution is arrived.
