India storm into semi-finals India will now meet the winner of the third quarter-final between Australia and Pakistan at Sydney on March 26.

Agency : Melbourne Rohit Sharma blasted a strokeful century as defending champions India stormed into the semi-finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup by thrashing a hapless Bangladesh by 109 runs in a lop-sided contest on Thursday. Riding on Rohit's spectacular 137 off 126 balls and his rollicking 122-run fourth wicket stand in only 15.5 overs with the belligerent Suresh Raina (65), India were able to post a commendable 302 for six after opting to bat at the MCG. In reply, Bangladesh were never in the contention as India hardly took their foot off the pedal to dismiss their

neighbours for a paltry 193 in 45 overs without hardly breaking a sweat. The juggernaut continues to roll on for Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men who have now recorded their seventh win on the trot in this mega event. India will now meet the winner of the third

quarter-final between Australia and Pakistan at Sydney on March 26. The victory took the tally of India's successive World Cup victories to 11, including four in the last edition, as it was yet another easy outing for the title contenders. Such has been India?s domination

that whenever they have batted first in the tournament, they have scored 300 or more and taken all 70 opposition wickets in seven

Gangrape case: 71-year-old nun saved 2 other nuns Agency : Nadia The septuagenarian nun, who was gangraped by some goons in Convent of Jesus and Mary in Nadia district's Ranaghat, some 80 km from Kolkata, on Saturday, March 14, reportedly tried to save two other nuns, before becoming a victim of the heinous crime. As per a report published in SSA, the goons were molesting two other nuns when the Sister Superior intervened and prevented them from molesting them. Then, the goons took her to a separate room and committed the dastardly act. The nun was found lying in a pool of blood at 4 am. The intruders even tried to snatch

rings and chains from the nuns, who told them not to touch them as they 'belonged to God'.Cleemis was quoted saying as, "The sister is in the hospital, she is at peace and she forgives her oppressors. She is praying for everyone, including the oppressors. I was surprised she spoke with such serenity." "She said she has

forgiven but added that what happened to her should not happen to anyone else. As this period of Lent is very special for Christians, she said that the way she saw it, her suffering helped her identify with the suffering of Christ at this time, and she hoped it would yield in bringing blessings to everyone", he further said.

Cleemis who met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday, welcomed her decision to hand over the probe to CBI. "The CM has ordered a CBI probe and we are very happy and satisfied. We hope for the best," he said after calling on the chief minister at the state secretariat. "We are confident that everything will go positive in the state," he added. Meanwhile, Hospital superintendent A K Mondol on Wednesday said that the hospital authorities were "in a position to release her, but the final decision has to be taken by patient party, the police and the district administration.

IAS officer DK Ravi's death: Karnataka govt refuses to budge on CBI probe Agency : BENGALURU The Karnataka government on Thursday stood firm on its decision and refused to refer the case of the mysterious death of IAS officer DK Ravi to the CBI even as the issue brought the business of the state assembly to a halt for the third day. The state government cancelled the transfer of CID-IGP Pronab Mohanty and directed him to investigate the case. The government on Wednesday had transferred Mohanty, inviting allegations of foul play by opposition. As public anger escalated with the demand of family of the deceased officer for a CBI probe resonating across the state amidst continuing protests, state home minister KJ George made it clear

after a cabinet meeting that there was no change in the stand of the government, which has come under attack from the opposition and others for "stonewalling" central probe. Speaking to reporters, he said, "Whatever decision we have taken on the floor of the house, that is the decision and we will stick to it." In the Lok Sabha, Union home minister Rajnath Singh said if the state government recommends a CBI probe, the Centre will immediately order an inquiry by agency. The issue was raised by a delegation of MPs who met him and Karnataka chief minister has informed him that after receiving more details, he would send a detailed report to the Centre, Singh said as

BJP Karnataka unit president Prahlad Joshi raised the matter. Ratcheting up pressure, BJP and JDS MLAs marched in a procession from Vidhana Soudha, the state secretariat, to Raj Bhavan and requested governor Vajubhai Vala to advise the Siddaramaiah government to refer the case to CBI. The march came after members of both parties stalled proceedings in the

assembly as they continued their round-the-clock dharna for the third day, forcing adjournment of the House till March 23.

matches so far. Umesh Yadav (4/31 in 9 overs) was bang on target during his entire spell despite a flurry of boundaries in Tamim Iqbal?s run-a-ball 25 that ended with Dhoni taking a low catch off the bowler. Imrul Kayes (5) was run-out due to a mix-up. Two in-form players in lefthander Soumya Sarkar (29) and Mahmudullah Riyadh (21) steadied the ship with 40 run stand before Shikhar Dhawan took an acrobatic catch to get rid of the latter on the boundary line. Once

Mahmudullah was gone there was an air of inevitability about the result with Soumya Sarkar being caught by Dhoni diving to his left and Shakib Al Hasan caught at backward point of Jadeja. Mohammed Shami (2/37 in 8 overs) took his wickets tally to 17 while Ravichandran Ashwin (0/30 in 10 overs) and Ravindra Jadeja (2/42 in 8 overs) again operated well in tandem with big MCG boundaries as cushion. The day however belonged to

Rohit, who hit his seventh ODI hundred with 14 boundaries and three sixes to his credit while Raina with seven fours and a big six off Shakib Al Hasan played an equally attractive as well as game-changing knock off 57 balls. Rohit's penchant for scoring big hundred was again evident as he now has two ODI hundreds at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (he has scored 138 vs Australia) and he got runs when it mattered the most, in a crunch game, with his team under some kind of pressure. While the Mumbaikar paced his innings brilliantly scoring the first 50 off 70 balls and the next 87 runs off only 56 balls, the left-hander from UP was more adventurous in his shot selection as he treated both pacers and spinners with equal disdain. Despite scoring two halfcenturies, Rohit has had a quiet tournament. So the very first ball bowled by rival captain Mashrafe was hit through the covers and certainly calmed his nerves.

Was IAS officer Ravi blackmailed for exposing corruption? The alleged suicide of IAS officer D.K. Ravi in Karnataka’s Kolar district has put the spotlight on the vulnerability of those civil servants who decide to take on corruption. The circle of civil servants in Delhi is abuzz with the phenomenon called a “midnight knock” which comes in the form of news about a transfer followed by the orders the next morning. Transfers have been the most potent weapon in the hands of the political bosses to make civil servants fall in line. It is no secret that the tentacles of corruption are spread in a manner that makes it impossible to break the nexus that engulfs the system. D.K. Ravi is the latest victim of the ugly side of upsetting the applecart. And the response from the government in the latest case has been on the predicted lines. While the state government is dithering on ordering a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Centre is trying to find a way out. The issue has assumed political dimensions as the Congress government wants to avoid the CBI intervention. Union Law Minister Sadanand Gowda, who belongs to Karnataka, has sought a legal opinion on the modalities of ordering a CBI probe. Either the state government can transfer the case to the central agency or the court can order it. With the image of the state government taking a beating as the alleged suicide has caused a national outrage, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has also sought a report from Karnataka Chief Minister S. Siddaramaiah. A senior IAS officer said that D.K Ravi’s death is being portrayed as a suicide case, but it cannot be ignored that he had taken on the powerful land mafia in the district. As it happens in such cases, the official said, an independent probe is the only way to make any headway to solve this case. Meanwhile, D.K Ravi has joined the long list of bureaucrats who have found themselves at the receiving end because of the tough stand taken by them. Vested interests employ all methods to get such officers out of their way. Though getting them transferred is the easiest option, many have even lost their lives. Questions are also being raised about strengthening the anti-corruption mechanisms to ensure that complaints from such whistleblowers are taken to its logical end. There is an overall apathy in the sense that key corruption watchdog posts at the Centre are lying vacant. There has been no appointment to the post of Central Information Commissioner (CIC) that has been lying vacant for months and the hunt is also on for new Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC). A young civil servant, on condition of anonymity, said the power play gets evident right at the start as he narrated his own account. He was ordered by his political masters to stop a demolition drive he had initiated some years ago. Police probe blackmail theory Two days after young IAS officer D.K. Ravi was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his Bengaluru residence, the police stumbled upon some crucial details. The police suspect that the officer, who had earned a good reputation for being upright, could be a victim of blackmail tactics from people with vested interests. “As the issue is still before the government, we will wait and watch.”

ABCD's dancing girl is now an ISI agent Agency : Mumbai Lauren Gottlieb has earned her first action role by replacing Nargis Fakhri in Welcome to Karachi. American dancer, Lauren Gottlieb, shot to fame with the dance drama, ABCD: Any Body Can Dance, in 2013. Two-and-a-half years later, the 26 year old, insists she's now half-Indian and has found her place in Bollywood, all thanks to director Remo D'Souza. "Varun (Dhawan) and Shraddha (Kapoor) are the stars of ABCD 2 but I have a solo track and plenty of dancing. Earlier, my co-stars used to tease me Phoren Ka Lauren, but this time, I was the one who ended up copying their thumkas and speaking their slang," laughs the actress. Having wrapped up ABCD 2, Lauren flew off to Indore, this week to begin shooting for Vashu Bhagnani's Welcome to Karachi. Asked if she has replaced another American import, Nargis Fakhri, she replied, "Yes. I'm really excited about my bad-ass character, who's a Pakistani ISI agent." Lauren will be seen alongside Jackky Bhagnani and Arshad Warsi, whose characters find themselves stuck in Karachi without their passports and are then abducted by the Taliban. "The role reminded me of my New York days when my father would walk around the house carrying a gun. It's an action film and you'll see me doing a lot of stunts," she promises. Vashu

Alia Bhatt & Sidharth Malhotra have late night movie date

Agency : Mumbai Rumoured lovers Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra have sparked speculation again about their relationship status after they were spotted together going out for a late night movie date. In pictures published by The Indian Express, Bhatt doesn’t seem so amused,

while Malhotra is seen avoiding the paps by putting up a straight face. Only a few days ago, Sidharth rumouredly gifted Alia a camera on 15th March when she turned 22. Previously, Bhatt has denied rumours of link-ups with Malhotra, “When I am asked about who I am

dating, who I am going out with, who my best friend is, or who I hate, I find all of it very personal. When the time is right to talk about something, I will. Let people speculate; I am not going to deny, accept or deflect anything. This is my space, and I want to guard it.”

Cannes buzz around Bombay Velvet getting louder

Bhagnani has decided to add an extra song-anddance routine to his political satire after signing the dancer. And Lauren will take to the dance floor with Jackky. However, she's quick to add that she will soon be seen in films which don't have any naachgaana. "In May, I will start another big banner film, which I will film back-toback.They have me in a serious role," she says. The actress admits that she hasn't had the time to breathe since she moved to

Mumbai to pursue a showbiz career. "I don't get to go home often and I really yearn to spend some quality time with my family," she sighs. "Luckily, I got to stay with my parents for three weeks while we were shooting ABCD 2 in Las Vegas." A major portion of the sequel was filmed in Sin City and Lauren who showed off her dance moves in the original and the TV reality show, Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa Season 6 and 7, asserts that this portion had difficult choreography.

Check out Honey Singh's comeback music video - One Bottle Down

Agency : Chennai The buzz around Anurag Kashyap's Bombay Velvet is getting louder, and the fact that it opens in India on May 15 tells a tale all right. The movie is strongly tipped to be part of the Cannes Film Festival, whose 68th edition runs from May 13 to May 24. The Festival will announce its selections towards the end of April in Paris, and Kashyap has been an all-time favourite of Cannes. His Gangs of Wasseypur, Ugly and Bombay Talkies have all been there. So, by releasing the movie two days after Cannes begins its 12-day roll on the exuberantly

scenic French Riviera, Kashyap will do no wrong. He would have followed to the T one of the strictest codes of Cannes: that a movie must have its premiere at the Festival. It should not have been exhibited anywhere else. The only exception that the Festival makes -- and that too occasionally -- is that a film could have had a screening in the country of its origin, in the case of Bombay Velvet, India. But one supposes Kashyap has played it really safe by scheduling the movie's opening in India on May 15 -- two days after Cannes unrolls its red carpet. In fact,

several French pictures do so. They open in Paris and elsewhere a couple of days after Cannes begins. Cannes is also quite finicky about another aspect. A movie that has tried for a slot in especially any of the other two major European festivals -- Berlin in February and Venice in August-September -- and failed, can seldom hope to be even considered by Cannes. Berlin and Venice too have similar rules, but this writer in the course of his long association with the Big Three of Europe, has found that it is Cannes which is very particular about this rule.

Salman Khan mourns the death of his pet dog Veer Agency : New Delhi The first look of former Tamil star Jyothika’s comeback film, 36 Vayathinile, is out. The film is a remake of last year's Malayalam sleeper hit, How Old Are You, which marked the return of Manju Warrier to the silver screen. 36 Vayathinile's lead, Jyothika too could be hoping for a similar change in fortunes with the film. Marriage, two kids and years of staying away from

the arc lights has done little to dim her charm. The poster shows Jyothika facing the camera in a bright yellow and pink salwar kameez, establishing an instant connect with her audience through her confidence and innate warmth. The original Malayalam film was about a middle-aged married woman making her way into a male-dominated world where nobody thought she'd survive.

Agency : Mumbai Honey Singh is back after a long hiatus with his latest music video One Bottle Down. The famous rapper whom seemed to have become an inseparable part of every film in the past few years had taken a break from work citing health reasons. But it looks like

Honey is ready to party even though he seems to have come down from 'Chaar Bottle Vodka' to 'One Bottle Down'. One Bottle Down is a classic Honey Singh number with the rapper drinking and dancing the night away. It lacks the zest of his previous songs and even

Honey seems a little subdued in his performance. But still, a new Honey Singh single is always something to watch out for especially if it comes after such a long gap. Interestingly, this is also his first single to release this year. You can check out the video below and let us know what you think!

Agency : Mumbai Salman Khan's love for dogs is well known. On Wednesday, the 'Prem Ratan Dhan Payo' actor tweeted heart-wrenching pictures of him with his pet dog Veer. Salman slipped into a nostalgic mode and remembered the night Veer passed away two months ago. The first picture shows Salman with his late canine friend, who is lying on a rug on the floor, while in the second one, he is seen holding Veer's paw which

has his signature bracelet on. While sharing the second picture, Salman tweeted, "Abt 2 months ago . Nite veer passed away." Recently, when Salman received news about his pet dog Sandy being unwell, he decided to put the shoot of 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' on hold and fly back home to Mumbai from Rajasthan for a day. Salman has also had two Bull Mastiffs — Myson and Myjaan. After Myson's death in 2009, Myjaan took ill a few months later and

passed away. It is said that his debut production venture, 'Chillar Party', was a tribute to his own dogs.

Facebook sued for sexual harassment, racial discrimination

Agency : WASHINGTON A former Facebook employee, who was sacked in 2013, is suing the social media giant for sex discrimination, sex harassment, race discrimination, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, among other allegations. Chia Hong claimed that the US-based company had a "hostile work environment" where she was belittled, ordered to organize parties and serve drinks to male colleagues, and asked why she didn't just take care of her child, reported The Verge. Hong contended that she was not just discriminated for being a woman but also for being a Taiwanese and that she was replaced by a "less qualified, less experienced Indian male." She worked at the company for more than three years, first as a product manager and then as a technology partner in

finance. She was fired on October 17, 2013. The lawsuit named other defendants besides Facebook, including Anil Wilson and John Does. A Facebook spokesperson commented on the issue by saying that the company worked extremely hard to address issues related to diversity, gender and equality, and added that it believed it had made progress. The spokesperson further added that the company had substantive disagreements on the facts pertaining to the case and believed that the record showed the employee was treated fairly." The lawsuit was filed on Monday in San Mateo Superior Court. Hong is being represented by Lawless & Lawless, one of two law firms currently representing Ellen Pao in her gender discrimination suit against the Silicon Valley venture capital firm.

Resurgent Pakistan look SPORTS ROUNDUP ICC WORLD CUP-2015 to upset mighty Australia

Agency : ADELAIDE A resurgent Pakistan would look to carry forward the momentum when they take on formidable hosts Australia in the third quarterfinal of the cricket World Cup, in Adelaide on Friday. On the back of four victories in a row, including one against the mighty South African side, Pakistan recovered from two defeats to make the knockout stage. Misbah-ul-haq has played a pivotal role in their resurrection with his superlative batting effort and the skipper now has the biggest challenge of the tournament before him as

they run into host Australia, whom they have not beaten in their own den since their win at Perth in 2005. Odds are heavily stacked against the Asian nation as they have lost their last seven away matches against Australia. However, Pakistan being an unpredictable side can upset the Australia applecart if their bowlers do the job. In the eight World Cup encounters, the two teams have won four matches each and in the last contest it was Pakistan which emerged triumphant in Colombo in the 2011 edition. Losing the tall left-arm paceman Mohammed Irfan to a hip injury was not an ideal

proposition going into the crucial clash and Misbah would expect Wahab Riaz and Sohail Khan to come up firing on all cylinders. Pakistan would also look up to wicketkeeper Sarfaraz Ahmed, who scored a century in the must-win pool game against Ireland, to continue his good work at the top of the order. Misbah said his players were in good frame of mind ahead of the clash. “I think four straight wins gives you a lot of confidence as a playing unit, the mindset is good and the momentum is with us and this is the best time to play against such a good team because we are also in a good frame of mind,” Misbah said. “Everyone is calling them favourites and if any other team beat them then it’s called an upset, so for us if we can do that then it’s very good for Pakistan cricket,” the Pakistan captain said. History favours fourtime championsAustralia but their campaign in the tournament has been a mixed one so far.

David Warner to captain Sunrisers Hyderabad Agency : Hyderabad Australia’s swashbuckling opener David Warner has been appointed captain of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Surisers confirmed late on Wednesday night, tweeting: “Congratulations @davidwarner31 on being the SRH captain for IPL 2015. We wish you all the best!” The left-hander had made it clear late last year that he intented to lead Australia one day and taking the job of the IPL team will now provide him with the platform to display his skills as skipper. In the only match where Warner was captain, he made a century for a

Sydney Thunder win in the first edition of the Big Bash League (BBL). “In the back of your mind you always want to look to be a leader. Whether I end up getting a leadership role or not I feel I’m going to be a leader anyway,” Warner had told News Limited in November. “(Sometimes)

you need a lesson and you need to have a bit of a stuff up along the way to give you a kick in the backside. But I’ve always felt I’ve got a lot to offer to the guys.” Sunrisers finished sixth in the last edition of the IPL. Warner had made 523 runs in 14 innings for Hyderadbad outfit.

Wanted to make it count in World Cup quarters: Rohit Sharma Agency : Melbourne After scoring his second century at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Thursday, India opener Rohit Sharma said he wanted to make this innings count at the grand stage. Guided by Rohit's 137, the defending champions put up a challenging total of 302/6 against Bangladesh in the World Cup quarter-final. No team has ever chased down a target of 300 or more at the historic venue, which will also host the final. "It is the World Cup quarterfinal, so I wanted to make it count. I am glad we eventually posted a good total and now it is important to come back and defend," Rohit said at the mid-innings break. The Mumbaikar was slow to start with but

gathered momentum in the middle as he kept clobbering the bowlers all around the park to smash 14 boundaries and three huge sixes in his 126-ball innings. "It was important for me stay at the crease, especially knowing we lost a few wickets in the middle. We knew it would be slow and low, so I wanted to take my time. I knew if I could stay till the 35th over I could make it count," he said, after

scoring his seventh OneDay International (ODI) ton. The 27-year-old added that it became easier batting on the strip after the short rain delay in the 39th over. "After the rain, the ball came on nicely. It was important to hold your shape and then play your shots," he said. Only two other nonAustralian batsmen have scored two centuries at the MCG - David Gower and Viv Richards.

Irani Trophy: Karnataka stretch their lead to 321 runs

Agency : Bangalore Karnataka put up a much improved batting effort in their second innings to lead Rest of India by 321 runs on day three of Irani Cup here on Thursday. Ravikumar Samarth (81), Karun Nair (80) and Manish Pandey (73 not out) guided Ranji Trophy champions to 341 for six after resuming the day at 39 for no loss at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Rest of India had put Karnataka under pressure by dismissing them for 224 on day one but the hosts have managed to come out

of the woods with a solid batting display. Pandey's unbeaten 52-run partnership with captain Vinay Kumar (28 not out) towards the close of play further frustrated Rest of India. Both Pandey and Vinay had luck on their side as they were dropped on 50 and 6 respectively. Samarth, who opened in place of Uthappa, played a fine innings comprising 10 fours. Change in position did not work for Uthappa as he chopped one on to his stumps off pacer Varun Aaron. He had made 10 in the first innings at the top

of the order. Nair and Pandey stitched an important 106-run stand for the fifth-wicket. The inform Nair score his second fifty of the game, collecting 12 fours in his 123 ball knock. Wickets of Nair and Shreyas Gopal in the final session would have made Rest of India feel a bit better after toiling through the day. Brief scores: Karnataka 244 and 341/6 in 93 overs (Ravikumar Samarth 81, Karun Nair 80, Manish Pandey 73 batting; Varun Aaron 2/85, Pragyan Ojha 2/93). RoI 264.

Focus on winning Olympic medal for Indian hockey: Paul van Ass Agency : Melbourne The Indian superstar was sent packing for just three during the World Cup quarter-final against Bangladsh at the MCG, caught behind off a nice outswinger by Rubel. The fiery pace bowler couldn’t hide his delight at picking up the prized scalp, yelping with glee as he ran past his

victim. Rubel couldn’t resist having a few choice words to say to Kohli on his way back to the pavilion, and even at one stage began to walk towards the Indian batsman. In the end Bangladesh wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim held back his teammate before he got himself into real trouble. The MCG was the sight of

one of Kohli’s biggest runins with the Aussies during a ill-tempered Test series this summer. He relentlessly sledged Mitchell Johnson when the big paceman was having an off day, and then had a crack at the Aussies in the post-match press conference by saying they don’t learn their lesson when it comes to sledging.

Agency : New Delhi India has always been a difficult place to work for any foreign coach because of its culture and bureaucratic hurdles, but the new chief coach of the men's hockey team Paul van Ass on Wednesday said he has no other option but to adjust to the system. "It's different (working in India). Different doesn't has to mean it is better or worst, it's simply different. As a

foreigner, we have to adjust (in India), we have to adjust to the system," Van Ass told reporters in his first interaction with the media at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium

on Wednesday after taking over the reigns of the team. Working in India as a coach and that too in a high-pressure sport like hockey has never been easy for a foreigner.

Agency : Mumbai The recent coal block auctions might have addressed some fuel supply issues, but private power producers with nearly 10,000 MW capacity may have to face underrecovery to the extend of 65 paise per unit because of aggressive bidding, according to rating agency Crisil said. “Private power producers with a capacity of 10,000 MW, who bid the highest at the recently concluded coal block auctions, are staring at 65

paise per unit underrecovery in variable cost because of aggressive bidding,” the agency’s research arm said in a statement here Wednesday. These players could clock under-recovery of Rs 1,350 crore in FY16 because variable tariffs will not cover mining costs and production-linked payments to Government, it said. PIL. The PIL had sought direction from the court for the state government to improve health infrastructure and bring down maternal mortality rate below 100 which is presently at 122. Renu Khanna, member of Jan Swasthya Abhiyan, said, "One of the primary reasons for poor MCH is that the remote areas are highly under serviced. Though the state government claims of facilities in rural areas, it is mostly on paper," she said. "Also, there is a lack of monitoring of various health services announced by the state government. Further, post-natal care is very weak in the state as the staff at village levels are yet to be trained," she added.
