Heavy rains halt Mumbai, 2 killed Heavy rains in Mumbai tripped the electricity and plunged various areas into darkness since morning and also due to power supplier Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) shutting down six substations in these areas. Agency | Mumbai Heavy rains pummelled Mumbai and its suburbs in which two persons died of electrocution and bringing normal life to a grinding halt on Friday with several areas waterlogged and local train services cancelled leaving thousands of commuters stranded. As civic authorities described the rainfall in the country’s financial capital as “unprecedented”, they said 283mm of rain, which is normally received in 10 days, was witnessed in just 24 hours. Mithi river is around the danger mark, according to Yuva Sena chief Aditya Thackeray. Educational institutions were shut and government and private offices reported thin attendance. The Bombay high court and other courts were also shut. “The city has witnessed unprecedented rainfall in the last 24 hours, more than that the city usually receives in 10 days. LK Advani Begs Off Meeting With Arvind Kejriwal at the Last Minute Agency | New Delhi A day after his comments fearing a “repeat of the Emergency” provoked opposition barbs at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior BJP leader LK Advani cancelled his meeting with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Sources say Mr Advani’s office cited

prior engagements and told Mr Kejriwal that he will not be ‘free for a week.’ The two were to meet this evening. “Advani ji is correct in saying that emergency can’t be ruled out. Is Delhi their first experiment?” he had tweeted, in an apparent reference to his ugly power tus-

sle with the Centre. The BJP has denied that the meeting was cancelled due to party displeasure but sources say the party and its ideological men-

In the interview, Mr Advani had said: “At the present point of time, the forces that can crush democracy, notwithstanding the constitutional and legal safeguards, are stronger... Incidentally, Nair had raised sexual allegation against these three leaders in the past. However, Chandy refuted the allegations raised by Balakrishnan. “The court verdict, granting jail term to Nair and her co-accused Biju Radhakrishnan, has justified the government stand. I have not helped the solar scam accused in any manner. The court verdict has proved that the allegation that the chief minister had helped the accused was baseless,” he said.

Top posts in PSU banks: no scent of private banker

It looks like none of the private sector bankers could make it to the final list. I understand that the appointment committee has picked senior public sector bankers to head five relatively large stateowned banks for a three-year fixed tenure from a list of 26, which featured at least seven representatives from the private sector. The five successful candidates, according to a couple of people familiar with the selection process, are Usha Ananthasubramanian, chairman and managing director (MD) of Bhartiya Mahila Bank; M.O. Rego, deputy MD of IDBI Bank Ltd; Kishore Piraji Kharat, executive director (ED) of Union Bank of India; M.K. Jain, ED of Indian Bank; and R.K. Gupta, ED of Bank of Maharashtra. They will move to head Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, IDBI Bank and Canara Bank even as finer details of who will be heading towards which bank are not known at this point. A formal announcement is expected in the next few days. Some 26 bankers were shortlisted for the final interview conducted by three committees at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) headquarters in Mumbai last week. A couple of deputy general managers were in the fray by virtue of heading regional rural banks but they could not make to the final list of 17, which had senior bankers from Deutsche Bank AG, Axis Bank Ltd, Exim Bank, Lakshmi Vilas Bank Ltd and payment gateway First Data as well as a non-bank like Gneiss Corporate Solutions Pvt. Ltd, which offers value-added financial services under the Hamara Bank brand, among a few others. Three two-member panels interviewed them over two days last week. Hasmukh Adhia, secretary of the department of financial services in the ministry of finance, and Shubhalakshmi Panse, former chairperson and managing director of Allahabad Bank, constituted the first panel; RBI deputy governor R. Gandhi and Indian Institute of Management-Indore director Rishikesha T. Krishnan were on the second panel; and former managing director of State Bank of India S. Viswanathan and an additional secretary from the department of personnel and training were members of the third panel. The final selection of candidates is made by the appointment board chaired by the RBI governor, based on the weighted average marks given by each sub-committee to ensure objectivity and transparency. Early this year, the government split the top position in public sector banks. It was decided that there would be a non-executive chairman to guide the boards of such banks while the day-to-day management would be looked after by an MD and chief executive officer (CEO). In sync with this, the new heads of state-run banks appointed in the past few months are called MD and CEO.

Bangalore artist makes crocodile swim in giant pothole Agency | New Delhi

What do you do if you find a full-grown ‘crocodile’ in the middle of a busy city road? Most would scream out in terror, naturally. And that’s what happened on Thursday on Sulthanpalya Main Road in north Bangalore that took the motorists and locals by surprise. Bangalore, which is supposed to be India’s IT capital, is infamous for the potholed roads and conditions get worse with the monsoon showers, risking the lives of commuters. Despite repeated complaints, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has been unable to improve the road conditions of the so-called worldclass city. Frustrated by the failure of the BBMP

to repair a giant pothole and a broken water pipe in the middle of the main road, a city-based artist, Baadal Nanjundaswamy, planted a 20 kg life-sized crocodile in the 12-feetlong pothole and painted the pothole green. Bangalore has reportedly over 2,000 potholes in 422 of its main roads. The reptile created quite a furore, but people soon realised it was a novel way of pro-

test by Nanjundaswamy. According an Indian Express report, Nanjundaswamy created his fiber crocodile over a week’s time at a personal cost of Rs 6000. The 36-year old artist is not new to these forms of protest. He had earlier created a mouth of ‘Yamaraj’ in an open manhole to show that it was a death trap. The civic authorities reportedly fixed it within a day.

Shahid Kapoor to issue a ‘No Kissing’ clause after marriage? Agency | New Delhi

Adding a specific clause to their contracts isn’t a new thing now. The big deal is who is participating in this fad. Kissing or love making scenes are majorly hit in such situations. There are many actors who have made it mandatory for the producers to not include any intimate scenes or kissing scenes. So while you have the scared Pakistani married actors like Fawad Khan and Ali Zafar refusing to pucker up on screen, Sonakshi Sinha and Salman Khan refrain from doing the same too as they don’t think it is necessary! But it seems marriage is the biggest reason behind all of this. Kareena Kapoor Khan, post her marriage, isn’t comfortable with such scenes and if rumours are to be believed, Shahid Kapoor too might fol-

low suit. Yes, you read right. Shahid Kapoor is getting married on July 10 this year and it seems the actor is not interested in getting intimate with his heroines on screen. Maybe the actor doesn’t want his would-be wife to feel uneasy seeing him in a passionate liplock with his heroine on screen. It seems the actor might make it a mandatory clause in his film contracts. Well, we wouldn’t blame his wife if she feels tad jealous. When you have a hot husband who looks like that, you would be possessive about him too. Well, we know kissing scenes aren’t a necessity but love sometimes needs physical intimacy and we definitely will be disappointed if it turns out to be true. But when it comes to your better half, it is justified.

The 22-year-old will be joining Chennaiyin FC on loan from Brazilian club Atletico Paranaense to feature in the 2015 Hero ISL. his part in Chennaiyin’s run to the semis with four goals in six starts. Bruno’s goals came against FC Pune City, Mumbai City, Kerala Blasters and Delhi Dynamos. All three goals were quality strikes from the Brazilian but perhaps the most memorable one was the ‘Olympic Goal’ against Delhi Dynamos as he scored directly from a corner, beating world’s tallest goalkeeper Kristof Van Hout. Following ISL 2014, Bruno returned

to Atletico Paranaense and made five appearances for them in the Paranaense state championship. Chennaiyin FC manager Marco Materazzi said, “We are very happy to have retained Bruno for the second edition of the Hero Indian Super League. “Bruno is a player with great potential and he showed that many times last year, producing moments of magic in tight games. His presence in the squad gives us strength in depth in attacking midfield and I have full faith in him to have an even better season this time.” Bruno said: “I am thankful to Chennaiyin FC for retaining me and giving me the chance to play in India again. It was a wonderful experience to feature in the ISL last year both on and off the pitch.

Agency | New Delhi With a view to curbing demand for physical gold, the government on Friday proposed to issue sovereign gold bonds, which may attract capital gains tax as is applicable to bars and coins. The proposed scheme, which aims to shift part of the estimated 300 tonnes of physical gold bar purchased every year to demat gold bond, will be marketed through post offices and brokers on a commission basis. Based on the current market price, issuance of gold bonds equivalent of 50 tonnes would be around Rs 13,500 crore, said a discussion paper on the scheme for which comments are invited till July 2. “Since the amount

is not very high, it can be accommodated within the market borrowing programme for 201516,” it said. As regards taxation, the draft said, capital gains tax treatment will be the same as for physical gold. “This will ensure an investor is indifferent in terms of investing in these bonds and physical gold — as far as the tax treatment is concerned. This is still under examination,” it said. The bonds will be issued in 2, 5, 10 grams of gold or other denominations, it said, adding that the tenor of the bond could be for a minimum of 5-7 years so that it would protect investors from medium-term volatility in gold prices.

iBall Splendo: a PC on a stick that turns your TV into a full-fledged computer

Agency | New Delhi If you’re really and truly strapped for space but have a TV at your home or office, here’s a finger-sized gadget that can plug into a television and convert it into a regular computer. The iBall Splendo is a PC-on-astick that you insert into a regular HDMI port of your computer (like you’d do with a Chromecast, for example), and it packs all of the processing, memory, networking and peripheral interfaces that you’d find in a regular computer. This ultra-tiny form factor was showcased by Intel earlier this year at the CES event in Las Vegas.

This dongle-like device is powered by an Intel Atom processor with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of inbuilt Flash memory. It also runs Windows 8.1. The unit includes a wireless deskset comprising a keyboard and mouse, effectively enabling a complete Windows desktop experience. You can purportedly run all of the regular applications you’d be able to on a similarly configured laptop, for example, with features including Intel HD graphics, multi-channel digital audio, a microSD slot, a USB port, Micro USB port, Wi-Fi and in-built Bluetooth 4.0.

SPORTS ROUNDUP Dhoni fined 75% of match fee, Rahman 50% for collision in India-Bangladesh 1st ODI

Agency | Mirpur India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was on Friday fined 75% of his match fees for allegedly shoving young Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman during the first ODI of the three-match cricket series . Dhoni was charged with a Level 2 offence under the ICC Code of Conduct yesterday for elbowing the debutant pacer while chasing an imposing 308-run target set by Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium.

The incident happened during India’s chase when Mustafizur came in Dhoni’s way while completing his follow through as India captain was running for a single. Replays showed Dhoni shoved him while trying to reach the crease. Match referee Andy Pycroft summoned Team India manager Biswarup Dey last night to intimate him about the hearing. According to reliable sources, a collective decision was taken by the team management that the skipper would

not plead guilty in this case as he never tried to hurt the bowler intentionally. Accordingly, the administrative manager filled the form where India decided to contest the charge. In the morning at the team hotel on Friday, on-field umpires Rod Tucker and Enamul Haque Moni were called by Pycroft after which the trio of Dhoni, Dey, and Team India Director Ravi Shastri were summoned. It was learnt that the team’s defence was that Dhoni never raised his elbow and the officials said that he just wanted to complete the run. Their bone of contention was that according to replays, there was no gap between shoulder and armpit which justifies that he did not try to elbow the bowler.

The game was drawn in 53 moves. “Today I played a horrible game,” said Giri. “I did everything to lose, but may be just not enough.” The Italian was at his best in finding just the right resources and cruised home in the endgame. The argument that a switch from natural to artificial grass has killed Indian hockey is gaining strength with every failure. But such is India’s heart-toheart relation with the sport that hope never dies. That has kept the sport and the people’s love for it alive and kicking. Gujarat BJP suspends party worker Ramzani Yusuf Zuzara

Sunvilla News | gandhinagar

Gujarat BJP President RC Faldu has suspended Panchmahal district BJP worker Ramzani Yusuf Zuzara from party’s primary membership. According to a statement issued by state BJP media cell, Zuzara has been suspended for activities that harm the party. Ramzani is from Godhra which is headquarters of Panchmahal district. He is close to local BJP Lok Sabha MP Prabhatsinh Chauhan. Due to recommendation by Prabhatsinh, Ramzani was recently appointed as member in Food Corporation of India(FCI) committee. There was anger among local BJP workers and office bearers against Ramzani’s appointment. Local BJP workers felt that they were working

for party from decades, but when party came to power someone like Ramzani was selected for appointment. Local MP Prabhatsinh was however rock solid in support of Ramzani. He said Ramzani is active worker of party. He further said, during the elections when bogus voting takes place in Muslims dominated area, none from Hindu community dare to enter the area, but Ramzani accompanies him to the place in attempt to stop it. Prabhatsinh said he had recommended Ramzani’s

name as FCI committee member and therefore he was appointed. Recently when senior minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama who is guardian minister of this district visited Panchmahal, local BJP workers made representation against Ramzani’s appointment and neglect of loyal party workers. Later a meeting was held by state party general secretary Shabdasharan Brahmbhatt on this issue at Godhra in which party workers complained that recently there was police complaint filed against Zuzara for misuse of Member of Parliament’s identity card to skip toll tax payment at Vavdi toll plaza. Moreover his name also surfaced in the issue of bogus sponsor letters to Pakistani citizens for Godhra visit.

Gulberg case: Key witnesses testified like robots say defence lawyer Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Questioning the credibility of key eyewitnesses in Gulberg Society massacre case of 2002 post Godhra riots, the defence lawyer on Thursday argued that these witnesses can’t be trusted whose statements have been “concocted, improvised and contradictory”. The defence claimed that these so-called witnesses have testified like “robots for some ulterior motive”. Appearing for the accused, Rajkot-based senior lawyer Abhay Bharadwaj argued before special designated court judge P B Desai that one of the witness-

es Roopa Moody, “an innocent woman was manipulated” to give certain statement. Similarly, he said, the three other witnesses- Imtiaz Saeed Khan Pathan, Saeed Khan Pathan and Aslam A Pathan-gave statements which were tutored. Bharadwaj argued that the entire statement of the witnesses who have identified the ac-

cused only exposes their contradictions. Citing examples, he told the court Moody revealed name of one Raju Mochi who threw stone at her when she was entering the house of Ehsan Jafri who was among the 69 people burnt alive at Gulberg Society. However, there is no record suggesting the existence of Mochi.

Out of a total of 115 Pakistani fishermen presently lodged in jails in Gujarat, the Centre had

decided to release and repatriate 88 Pakistani fishermen, whose nationality has been confirmed by the Government of Pakistan, after withdrawal of cases registered against them with the consent of the competent courts on humanitarian considerations. These 88 Pakistani fishermen have already left Gujarat today and they will be handed over to the Pakistani au-

thorities at Attari border on June 21, 2015. Even though there were reports in the media about 9 more Pakistani fishermen whose nationality is stated to have been confirmed by the Government of Pakistan, as per available records, the MHA has not received any communication regarding the nationality confirmation of these 9 Pakistani fishermen.

tels on the outskirts of Gir sanctuary, had reopened. When the officers went to check, the owners showed them home-stay permits. Officials further alleged that there were instances where farmhouse owners had been running a hotel on their premises on the basis of permits given for home-stay units. An official gave the example of a big lodge in Sasan which had got permission for six rooms but had been using the lodge’s 25-odd rooms without permission. A tourist who does not need a bill is first accommodated in tents and then shifted to a room. Officials said this is the reason why there was no shortage of accommodation even during vacations.

in Gujarat mostly as a young architect in the mid 1950s and the 60s. Among several buildings, he designed three private residences — the Parekh House, the Ramkrishna Harivallabhdas house, home for former CM Dilip Parikh — and also tube housing for the low income groups, none of which exists anymore. He also designed Vadaj and Navrangpura bus stations, but only the latter stands. Correa was a regular visitor to Ahmedabad — the last being to CEPT University in 2014 to speak at Kurula Varkey Design Forum. His contemporaries in the city are renowned architects Balkrishna Doshi and Hasmukh Patel. Charles Correa was an

admirer of Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier and his philosophy, yet he was conscious of Mahatma Gandhi, his ideals and the purpose of frugality, says his contemporary and well known Ahmedabad-based architect Balkrishna Doshi. Sabarmati Ashram is a remarkable building demonstrating the essence of architecture in the Indian context — open and simple, yet expandable, adjustable and humane. Sabarmati Ashram was the first ashram that Ma-

hatma Gandhi started in Ahmedabad and where he lived from 1917 to 1930. Post-independence, the Ashram was converted into a memorial designed by Correa. Inaugurated in 1963 by the then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the building having louvered windows, reflects Gandhi’s simplicity with a rural touch. Officials said that the placement of buildings, constructed in random directions, are similar to houses found in villages.

not be granted only on medical grounds. A division bench of Justices Mohinder Pal and R D Kothari ordered that Bajrangi’s application be “dismissed as withdrawn”. Bajrangi had moved the High Court through his advocate Pravin Gondaliya seeking regular bail on medical grounds for treating

sought suspension of the sentence awarded to him by a special trial court. However, the High Court observed the plea should be rejected as bail cannot be granted only on medical grounds because any prisoner can be provided with treatment as per the jail manual and existing laws. This prompted Bajrangi’s lawyer to withdraw the application, which was allowed by the High Court. Bajrangi is out of jail since April 24 after a division bench of the High Court comprising Justices Ravi Tripathi and R D Kothari granted him bail for 90 days for treatment of his eyes. The VHP leader had been awarded life imprisonment in August 2012 along with then BJP MLA Maya Kodnani and 29 others in connection with the Naroda Patiya riot case in which 97 people were killed in the communal violence.

The 55 farmhouses and guesthouses on the periphery of Gir sanctuary granted permits for use as homestay establishments had been flouting norms even after getting permission. Under the state government’s home-stay policy, owners of farmhouses and guesthouses can be granted permission for using only six rooms. However, after taking permission for six rooms, the owners had been using other rooms too, in utter violation of the rules. Forest department officials said that officers in the field had often reported that several farmhouses that were earlier sealed by the Gujarat high court for illegally functioning as ho-

Gujarat has recorded a negative growth of 3.89 per cent in 2012-13 — the lowest in the country — according to a Government of India study called ‘Agriculture Statistics 2014’. The study also cites neighbouring Madhya Pradesh as having recorded highest growth in agriculture and allied sectors in 2012-13 and 2013-14. However, officials are yet to finalize their conclusions as Gujarat is yet to submit its data for the year ending 2013-14. According to the report, Gujarat (3.89 per cent) and Tamil Nadu (2.2 per cent) are the only two states to have registered negative growth in 2012-13 compared to the previous year. Statistics show that the state recorded negative growth in four years between 200405 and 2012-13. The data on the state agriculture and allied sector released since 2004-05 also shows that the gross state domestic

product (GSDP) has not remained constant. The years 2006-07, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2012-13 saw a drop in the GSDP. Officials of the state agriculture department blame a deficient monsoon for the negative growth, however neighbouring states seem to have done better despite deficient rainfall. The registrar and professor of economics at Junagadh Agriculture University, R L Siyani says the negative growth at the current price is directly related to industrial output — if the industrial output increases, the share of agriculture and allied sector in GSDP will also decrease.A president of the Produce Market in North Gujarat says agricultural production had fallen during the 2012-13 period due to low sowing activity compared to the previous year, adding that the per hectare yield with the exception of the cotton crop is decreasing, resulting in low output.

The Lakulish Yoga University, the first such varsity in Gujarat, got its first Muslim students on Thursday, since its inauguration in April 2013 by Narendra Modi, the then chief minister. Seated in the second row, Mohammad Sadiq and Imran Khan, both 30-year-old, attended the inaugural function of the current academic year with 25 other new students. A brainchild of Narendra Modi, the university— located in a lotus-shaped building on Sarkhej-Gandhinagar road — was estab-

lished under the Gujarat Private Universities Act 2009. “Pained” over some Muslim leaders objecting to the International Yoga Day celebrations, Mohammad and Imran said they decided to join the university after their “experience” with yoga. While Mohammad has enrolled himself for a 18-month postgraduate diploma yoga therapy course, Imran would be pursuing a threeyear degree (BSc) course. Both had been roommates at a hostel on Relief Road. “I was shocked when on the opposition by a section of Muslim leaders,

the government declared that surya namaskar would not be a part of the yoga day celebrations. Surya namaskar is the essence of yoga, without it, yoga would be like the body without a soul,” said Imran. In pursuit of his passion, Imran quit his job at an Ahmedabad-based animation company, where he was earning Rs 25,000 a month, and also motivated his friend Mohammad, a final-year student of chartered accountancy who was working with a CA besides teaching accountancy at a tuition centre in Juhapura.
