‘We Are Not Afraid, Will Continue Fight,’ Says Sonia

Sonia, Rahul get bail ; next hearing on Feb 20 Metropolitan Magistrate Lovleen granted bail to Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi on a bail bond of Rs 50,000. Agency | New Delhi After a 10-minute hearing, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul were today granted unconditional bail in the high-voltage National Herald case by a local court which said that offences alleged against them were not of “serious magnitude” at this stage and there was no apprehension that they would flee. Facing a private criminal complaint lodged by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy in the transfer of shares of the defunct party news-

paper Herald to a newly-created company, the two Gandhis, accompanied by a phalanx of leaders, including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Priyanka Gandhi, appeared before Metropolitan Magistrate Lovleen at 2.50 PM. The party’s legal eagles Kapil Sibal, Ashwini Kumar, both former Union Law Ministers, and Abhishek Manu Singhvi, as also top Congress leaders such as Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mallikarjun Kharge, A K Antony, Shiela Dikshit, Ambika Soni, Ahmed Patel

and Meira Kumar were at hand. As soon as the hearing commenced, Swamy opposed the bail pleas moved by the Gandhis and other accused saying they are influential persons and might flee the country if enlarged. However, the court said

“The accused are reputed persons having deep political roots and there is no apprehension that they will flee.” Swamy then said that a condition should be imposed that the accused should not be allowed to travel abroad without the permission of the court and they should submit their passports to

the court. “Congress is an old party,” the judge shot back and then dictated the order. “At this stage, without evidence the charges cannot be said to be serious in magnitude. They also have deep roots in the society so bail can be granted to the accused,” the judge said. Sonia, Rahul and three other ac-

cused -- Motilal Vora, Oscar Fernandes and Suman Dubey--sought bail which was granted after they furnished a personal bond of Rs 50,000 and one surety each. One of the accused Sam Pitroda was not present as he was stated to be unwell. His plea seeking exemption from personal appearance was allowed.

During the hearing, Sibal, Singhvi and other lawyers, who appeared for the accused, argued there was no apprehension that any of their clients would flee from the country as they have appeared before the court on the first date itself. Swamy later claimed that he had not opposed the bail but had told the court that conditions should be imposed on the Gandhis’ travel abroad since they “were in the habit of running away from the country”. The magistrate fixed February 20 as the next date of hearing during which they were asked to appear in person.

vneshwar Kumar, Ambati Rayudu, Amit Mishra and Harbhajan Singh were also omitted from the ODI squad. Off-spinner Harbhajan, however, kept his place in the T20 squad. Pacer Mohit Sharma was unavailable for selection due to fitness issues, Thakur added.

The 23-year-old Sran and 22-year-old Pandya were rewarded with a berth in the ODI and T20 squads respectively for their consistent performance in domestic circuit. The squad, to be captained by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, has expectedly been packed with seamers, keeping in mind the conditions in Australia, where India will play five ODIs and three Twenty20 Internationals from January 12 to 31. The selectors preferred to give another opportunity to Yuvraj and Nehra, both of whom have represented India with distinction in the past.

GST unlikely this session, bankruptcy Bill to be introduced Yuvraj, Nehra return to India’s T20 squad Agency | New Delhi

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday indicated that the government may not be able to pass the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill in the ongoing session of Parliament, but will introduce the bankruptcy Bill. Accusing the Congress for delaying GST for “collateral reasons”, he said: “Some people do get sadistic pleasure in seeing India slow down. But then, it’s a sadistic pleasure at a very severe national cost. We cannot allow that.” The minister further said the government will push through changes in the arbitration Act and commercial court

Veteran players Yuvraj Singh and Ashish Nehra were handed fresh lifelines with a recall to India’s Twenty20 squad, while Punjab left-arm seamer Brainder Sran and Baroda all-rounder Hardik Pandya were the new faces in the squads for India’s tour of Australia in January. Lanky pacer Ishant Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami were brought back into the ODI team, which had no place for Suresh Raina, who was overlooked to test new players, and Stuart Binny, who was left out of the T20 and ODI squads. Shami, who has now re-

Bill in the Rajya Sabha in the remaining “crucial” three days of the winter session, which ends on Wednesday. Addressing the Ficci AGM, Jaitley said, “I have no doubt in my mind that attempt to delay (GST) is entirely for collateral reasons. And the only collateral reason I suspect is if I couldn’t do it, then why should somebody else do it?” He maintained that

“a delayed GST is better than a flawed GST”. The minister added that he would “still urge and persuade” the Opposition to give up their rigidity on Constitution-prescribed tariffs. “The Constitution-prescribed tariffs actually can be an albatross around the neck of the future generation. And we owe it to them not to create situations of this kind,” he said.

Two new reality shows reveal all is fair in love and TRPs

Love seems to be in the air—at least for our Hindi general entertainment channels. Two new reality shows focusing on the power of love have been unleashed on unsuspecting audiences in the past week. The reason why both caught my eye was because both are anchored by celebrity couples and run through pretty similar formats. The first, Power Couple premiered on Sony over the weekend. To show that all is fair in love and TRPs, it is hosted by Salman Khan’s brother Arbaaz Khan and his wife Malaika Arora Khan, and is telecast at 8.30pm. This clashes with the Salman Khan-anchored weekend episodes of Bigg Boss Double Trouble on Colors. All that’s left is for little brother Sohail Khan to start anchoring a show, but I don’t think any channel wants to take such a big risk. So what’s Power Couple all about? According to the programme descriptor on the website (yes, they have a dedicated website for the show), Power Couple is, “When true love is put to the test, the most caring, trusting and daring couple rise to power.” Like a phoenix from the ashes. I waded through two entire episodes of the show and here’s what I saw. Ten celebrity couples, ranging from former cricketers to models to dancers to TV actors and star brothers, who have shown that their only prowess is in making MMS videos of their inebriated girlfriends, have been lined up in one pretty row. Some of the couples are both celebrities, others are celebrities and their spouses have tagged along. The couples include MMS king Ashmit Patel and model Mehek Chahal; TV actors Apurva and Shilpa Agnihotri; dancer Sandeep Soparkar and his wife model Jesse Randhawa; model Shawar Ali and his wife model Marsela; model Rahul Dev and actor Mugdha Godse; cricketer Salil Ankola and his wife Ria Banerjee; TV actor Pratyusha Banerjee and her fiancé, actor Rahul Singh; TV actors Sanjeeda Sheikh and Aamir Ali; TV actor Delnaaz Irani and DJ Percy Karkaria; and TV actor Naved Jaffrey and his wife Sayeeda. Some of the couples are married, but most are dating. The couples are taken to a villa in Goa and are met by Malaika and Arbaaz, who will supposedly give them “power advice on the basis of their long relationship”. The skill sets people have nowadays, really. The first two episodes show the couples participate in a bunch of tasks—trivia quizzes about each other and physical tasks—and finally one couple is voted out. That couple being Sandeep Soparkar and Jesse Randhawa. The show is the Indian version of one of Israel’s most popular reality shows and is like Fear Factor on a Valentine overkill. Is it bad? Well, it’s not great.

Discussed ‘Kyaa Kool Hai Hum 3’ script with my wife: Aftab Shivdasani

Agency | Mumbai Actor Aftab Shivdasani says when the script of his upcoming adult-comedy “Kyaa Kool Hai Hum 3” was offered to him he discussed it with his wife. Aftab, who has earlier worked in raunchy comedies like “Masti” and “Grand Masti”, plays an adult movie star in “Kyaa Kool Hai Hum 3” along with actor Tusshar Kapoor. “I didn’t discuss the script with family and friends because they trust me But I did discuss it with my wife and she was very supportive and very encouraging. She was very positive about it,” Aftab told reporters. His co-star Tusshar added, “This is not a new

genre for us. We are players in this genre, we have done two-three films in this zone so its like our everyday work.” They were speaking at the song launch “Hai Jawani” from the movie which features Gauhar Khan in a special appearance. Directed by Umesh Ghadge, “Kyaa Kool Hai Hum 3” is the third instalment in the popular franchise. The previous two parts starred actor Riteish Deshmukh. Tusshar, who has been part of “Kyaa Kool Hai Hum” and its sequel “Kyaa Super Kool Hai Hum”, feels even though people like adult comedies it is no indicator that they will be successful too.

I am sure I will spend some time on SABR: Roger Federer Agency | Singapore

Agency | New Delhi Google CEO, Sundar Pichai, who is on his India tour will address and interact with the students from across the country today (Thursday) at Delhi University’s Sri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC). Since India is projected to have more Android users than the US by 2016, Pichai spent his first day emphasizing on India’s importance for Google. “We will build a new campus, ramp up engineering presence in Hyderabad to make products for India; and increase hiring in Bengaluru”, he said. On being asked about his interest in technology, he said, “I was always interested in technology”. During the two-day visit, he will meet Indian President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “In our attempt to provide internet access to people, we have decided to provide Wi-Fi in 400 railway stations with RailTel”. “It’s incredible to see from the scale of India overtime, you do need enteprenuers to tackle and build things for India and globally and I think it’s a unique opportunity that India has”.

Consumers saved Rs 60k cr on their fuel bill

Agency | Bangalore Six excise duty increases on petrol and diesel since November 2014 may have added Rs 25,700 crore to the government kitty, but consumers are no less rich. Largely automobile owners, consumers together gained a little over Rs 60,000 crore from lower petrol and diesel prices in the first seven months of the current financial year. On an annualised basis, the total hike in excise duty can add Rs 92,915 crore to the government kitty based on 19.1 million tonnes of petrol and 69.4 million tonnes of diesel Indians burnt last financial year. The total increase in excise duty has been Rs 9.65 a litre for petrol and Rs 7.97 a litre for diesel. This could have directly translated into reductions in retail prices but the government decided to use the fall in global prices to allow stateowned oil refiners to partially pass on the benefit through periodic price cuts.

World number three Roger Federer said he will keep honing his chip-andcharge “SABR” tactic as he prepares for the 2016 season with a new coaching team. Short for “Sneak Attack by Roger”, it involves rushing towards the net at the moment of a second serve and chipping back the ball, shortening his opponent’s response time. The Swiss 17-time Grand Slam winner, who was in Singapore for the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL), successfully employed it against Novak Djokovic at the Cincinnati final in

August. “I would love to keep trying it, now I have time to practise, so I am sure I will spend some time on that as well and see if… it’s something I should keep up,” said the 34-year-old. “I am happy that it kind of worked, it was fun and it was all over the news, I thought it was quite exciting for me personally,” he said, giving credit to head coach Severin Luthi for the tactic. Federer enters the 2016 season with a new coaching team after replacing his idol Stefan Edberg with a new assistant coach, Croatian Ivan Ljubijic. “I’ll stay in touch

Manoj Prabhakar to guide Afghanistan for World T20

Former India all-rounder Manoj Prabhakar was on Thursday appointed bowling coach of the Afghanistan national team. Prabhakar says the role is “a challenge” , one he is looking forward to. “It’s a challenge I am looking forward to. I hope I can use my expertise to help guide the Afghanistan team. This is a team brimming with talent, and I am sure they will be a force to be reckoned with in the T20 World Cup,” he said. Back in the limelight with a solid show against South Africa in the recently-concluded Test series, Ravindra Jadeja is likely to make a return as the national selectors meet here on Saturday to pick the Indian squad for the upcoming limited-overs series in Australia. While Jadeja almost looks a certainty, the selectors are likely to discuss about the inclusion of fit-again pacer Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma and Murali Vijay, who has started batting in the middle-order for Tamil Nadu in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. It will be interesting to see if the selectors con-

Indian team for the upcoming tour of Australia. India will play five ODIs and three T20 internationals, starting January 12, next year. According to a source, the selectors are unlikely to make major changes with the World T20 round the corner. “Dhoni might face some scrutiny, yes. But I don’t think there will be a change of guard. That will be a knee-jerk reaction,” he said. So the status quo is set to be maintained unless the BCCI and its senior selection committee decide to spring a coup on

the floor. They will also decide the squad strength on the floor. In all likelihood, it’s going to be 16, which usually has been the case for trips abroad. On the eve of the meeting, the big talking point was about Yuvraj Singh, who after a few creditable outing has emerged as a contender for a middle-order berth. The 34-year-old hasn’t played for India since April 2014, but assuming that at least 8 batters, including Dhoni, would be picked, a couple of vacancies appear to be up for grabs.

Facebook expands ‘Instant Articles’ to Android

Agency | New Delhi Facebook has said it had signed up 350 global media partners, including from India, for its “Instant Articles” service as it expanded the programme to Android devices. The service launched this year for Apple devices allows users to quickly view news articles which are hosted on the fast network of the world’s biggest social network. “We’ve been beta testing Instant Articles for Android with a small group of people on Facebook for several weeks, and as we saw on iPhone, the faster, richer reading experience inspires people on Android to share Instant Articles with their friends more often than they do with standard web articles,” said Facebook product manager Michael Reckhow. “More than 350 publications around the world have already joined the Instant Articles program to date, and more than 100 are already publishing daily -- with more joining each day.”

Agency | Hamilton Sri Lanka scripted a brilliant comeback in their second Test match against New Zealand thanks to a destructive spell of bowling by young quick Dushmantha Chameera on day two in Hamilton on Saturday. Chameera took his first five-wicket haul as New Zealand slumped from 81 without loss in reply to Sri Lanka’s first innings score of 292 to be 232-9 at stumps. Doug Bracewell was not out 30 after a ninth-wicket stand of 31 with Neil Wagner (17) who was

dismissed on the last ball of the day. The 23-yearold Chameera, bowling at up to 146 kilometres per hour (90.6 mph), was used sparingly by captain Angelo Mathews, taking three for 17 in his first spell and two for 30 in his second. In partnership with the wily 37-year-old Rangana Herath, playing his 67th Test, they took New Zealand apart when it seemed openers Tom Latham and Martin Guptill were settling in. New Zealand lost four wickets for eight runs in four overs as Chameera claimed the

scalps of Latham, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor while Herath removed Guptill. Brendon McCullum tried to steer his side out of trouble and put on 39 for the fifth wicket with Mitchell Santner before he became Herath’s second wicket. Chameera, who in his second spell removed Tim Southee and Wagner, was delighted with his performance. “This is my fourth Test and I get five wickets so I am very happy,” he said, adding the wicket he treasured most was Williamson.

It’s been a mixed year for the Men in Blue. After the high of reaching the World Cup semi-final, in the first half of 2015, it has been all downhill for India’s limited-overs team under skipper MS Dhoni. The two traumatic blows in the period of slump being the away loss to Bangladesh and the humiliation at the hands of South Africa at home. These string of failures have put Dhoni’s captaincy under the scanner, especially at a time when the Test team is doing so well under Virat Kohli. So is Dhoni still the right man to be in-charge of the limited-overs squads? This is a tricky question that the national selectors face, as they meet in Delhi on Saturday to pick the

GCMMF is in the process of setting up “India’s biggest milk powder drying plant” at a cost of Rs 450 crore at the Mother Dairy, Gandhinagar (a unit of GCMMF) which will have a capacity of 150 metric tonne per day. The expansion at Gandhinagar includes installation of two milk processing lines of 50 KLPH, an additional 80 MTPD ghee processing and packing line and a 50 MTPD but-

ter manufacturing line. “Last year, the quantum of milk we had sent out for processing was not even one-third of what we are sending out of Gujarat this year… Milk has come more than our expectations. This is because of our good price (been given to milk producing farmers),” Sodhi said adding that GCMMF has not increased the prices of milk and milk products for the last oneand-half-years.

details shared by the state government will be built in next 30 months at estimated cost of Rs 309.10 crore by Road and Building department, Government of Gujarat. There are two bridges including Golden bridge and railway bridge over river Narmada in Bharuch. The Golden bridge was constructed in year 1882 under British rule. it’s an old and narrow bridge which can carry two vehicles side by side at one time.

For last 20 years, heavy vehicles are banned to use this bridge. They therefore need to cross new national highway to reach Ankleshwar. Sardar bridge located on new national highway remains close for vehicles often for repairing which triggers massive traffic jam for hours. The new four lane bridge will solve this problem and make road journey between Surat and Vadodara smoother and speedier.
