Agency News: New Delhi External affairs minister S Jaishankar took a jibe at Congress’s Rahul Gandhi and said that Indian Army is not in LAC on Rahul Gandhi’s orders. Gandhi had earlier said that the “government is sleeping”. Speaking at an India Today event, Jaishankar said India has done the biggest-ever LAC deployment to counter Chinese deployments, which were scaled up since 2020. “The Army is deployed to counter any attempt to unilaterally alter the LAC, that is the commitment of the Indian Army. If we were in denial, then Army won’t be deployed there,” said Jaishankar.Defending India’s stance of deploying an increased number of soldiers at the border, Jaishankar said the nation would not allow any country to change status quo of LAC unilaterally. The comment by the external affairs minister comes at a time when both the countries are engaged in a stand-off post December 9 clash in Arunachal’s Tawang. An eery quietness prevailed in the major cities of China on Sunday as people locked themselves in their homes in the wake of the burgeoning number of COVID-19 cases across the country. Currently, China is battling the first of the three predicted waves of Covid cases this winter season, as per the chief epidemiologist of the country Wu Zunyou. There is a high chance of cases multiplying in China if citizens continue returning to their homes in a mass transit movement to attend the Lunar New Year holiday to be held next month. In the wake of surging Covid-19 cases, hearses carrying coffins were seen queued in the designated COVID-19 crematorium’s driveway in Beijing on Saturday, as workers in the funeral parlours of the city appeared busier than usual, days after the zero-Covid tolerance policy was reversed by China. Services from delivery of parcels to catering have been hit recently after the Omicron variant, which is highly transmissible, spread across Beijing. Funeral

crematoriums and homes are finding it difficult to manage the increasing demand as more drivers and workers are contracting the virus. Officially, China has not yet reported any death due to Covid since December 7 when the government abruptly pulled back its zero-Covid tolerance policy after it faced unprecedented protests from the people against the strict protocol. Mass testing for coronavirus has ended as part of easing curbs imposed under the zero-Covid policy, raising doubt over whether the number of cases reported officially can present the intensity of the outbreak. On December 17, around 2,097 new symptomatic infections of Covid were reported by China. Empty subways were seen in the photos uploaded of the city of Xian on social media, as people complained of facing delays in receiving their deliveries.

Earlier on December 16, the National Human Rights Commission took a suo motu cognizance of the acid incident in Delhi and sought detailed reports within four weeks from the Police Commissioner, Chief Secretary of the government. “NHRC has taken suo motu cognizance of the media reports that two masked men threw acid on a 17-year-old girl on her way to school in West Delhi on December 14, 2022. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday alleged that the BJP government “talks like a lion outside the country, but is acting like a mouse within” as it is unable to take on China for indulging in incursions along the border and is running away from a debate on the issue in Parliament. Speaking at a rally in Rajasthan’s Alwar during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, he also claimed that while the Congress stood for the country and helped attain Independence after its leaders gave supreme sacrifices, “not even a dog of the BJP was lost” for the country. Kharge accused the BJP of dividing the people of the country on lines of religion, caste and region and alleged that it was ending democracy and autonomy of constitutional institutions, against which the Congress was taking out the Bharat Jodo Yatra. “The Modi government claims that they are very strong and pat themselves

After 20 of our soldiers were martyred at the border in Galwan, Modi ji met Chinese president 18 times. They held meetings and even had swings. After all this, why is it happening at the border with China?” he said. Kharge said he again raised the issue of China in Parliament and wanted a discussion on the border situation, but the BJP government is not ready for it. “They talk like a lion outside, but their actions if you see are like a mouse. Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Bharati Pravin Pawar told Rajya Sabha last week that over 40 per cent positions in centrally run healthcare institutions were lying vacant. This staggering number highlights a crisis affecting not only India’s health systems but of several countries. Recent news reports from the UK, Germany, France and Spain have shown vacancies in healthcare services to be reaching a breaking point. This global phenomenon needs urgent addressal from health systems and countries alike. The reasons for healthcare workforce shortages have been both country and system specific. Historically, healthcare professionals such as doctors, nurses, technicians and allied health workers have required specialised training institutions with long periods of training. But in most countries, the number of seats and institutions have been inadequate to meet the healthcare needs. While the global north has generally done better than the global south and low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), developed economies too have felt the pressure due to changing demographics and disease profiles. Developed countries have been able to attract the best talent from around the world to run their health systems. This along with better quality of life and higher pay ensured a brain drain from the developing world to the developed world in the past four decades. The advancements in health infrastructure and systems over the past two decades in countries like India have been able to stem the flow of professionals overseas, but the problem still persists. In India, two divergent data points have been highlighted by the government in Parliament. One the one hand, there has been an 87 percent and 105 percent rise in the number of graduate MBBS and post-graduate seats over the past eight years. At the same time, nearly 6 percent of post-graduate seats remain vacant in a health system that has a shortage of super specialists. Moreover, the bed-to-patient and doctor-to-patient ratios, by World Bank’s 2017 estimates, were 0.5 and 0.8 per 1,000 - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara people, all below LMIC standards.

Two judges can’t sit and decide such social matters. There should rather be a debate in Parliament and society, he asserted during Zero Hour in the upper house. On Wednesday, the Top court issued a notice on a petition filed by a same-sex couple seeking legal recognition of their marriage in India. A bench headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Gehlot, when asked to speak on the political model of Rajasthan during a press conference on Saturday organised on four years of completion of the Congress government in Rajasthan had quipped, “I will start taking political classes after my retirement.” BJP state president Satish Poonia said, “God forbid! If a person sees such a day that someone has to go to the Ashok Gehlot School of Politics, then he will learn to lie, make false declarations and break promises… You can definitely get training on these issues, but there is no scope for training in traditional ethical politics, which Rajasthan was once known for in some era,” he said. Meanwhile, speculations are also rife in the state about the statement of Gehlot. “Mr Gehlot has been a politician over the last four decades and a politician never thinks or announces his retirement plan. His statement has added fuel to fire amid the ongoing political tussle in Rajasthan over leadership issues,” said a senior leader on condition of anonymity.

2 held for setting up fake FCI office, duping job aspirants in UP Agency News: Lucknow

The police have arrested two members of a gang that had created an office of Food Corporation of India (FCI) in a rented building at Mahanagar for running a fake recruitment drive for the FCI since last year. The gang conducted interviews to win the job-seekers’ confidence and later issued fake appointment letters to select a few. However, before those who got appointment letters could realise that they were duped, the gang wrapped up the entire setup and fled. The police managed to arrest two gang members, Neeraj Pandey and Jitendra Kailash, after a yearlong electronic surveillance from near Nishatganj flyover on Sunday. A non-bailable warrant (NBW) was issued against the duo. The police said that it all started when one Manish Kumar Rai on June 14, 2021, lodged an FIR alleging that

the arrested duo had taken Rs 1.75 crore on pretext of a job in FCI.
