DGCA has to play a role of impartial regulator: Delhi HC New Delhi, Feb 20 The Delhi High Court today rebuked aviation regulator DGCA for not filing its response on an Irish aircraft leasing firm's plea seeking de-registration of a plane given by it to troubled SpiceJet for alleged nonpayment of dues. "DGCA has to play a role of impartial regulator. The regulator despite being told to file their response chose not to file it. Why DGCA is doing so, god only knows," a bench of Justice Rajiv Shakdher said.

Man bludgeoned to death in UP Kanpur, Feb 20 A 41-year-old man was allegedly bludgeoned to death by some persons in Kalyanpur area in the wee hours today, police said. The incident happened when Tarachand, the nephew of retired police officer Shivcharan Singh, was guarding Singh's under-construction house, SP (Rural) Surendra Tiwari said. His body was found lying in a pool of blood in his tent by the neighbours this morning, who informed the police, he said.

Modi’s monogrammed suit sold for Rs 4.31 crore Surat A Surat-based diamond trader Friday won the bid of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pinstriped monogrammed for Rs4.31 crore. Earlier, the scramble to possess the controversial suit of Prime Minister Modi grew with Surat-based diamond trader Mukesh Patel making a staggering bid of Rs2.31 crore on the last day of the auction. Patel had earlier offered Rs2 crore, but later raised the bid through a written offer of Rs2.31 crore to Rs4.31 crore. “I had lost courage as the bidding amount kept on increasing. Then I talked to my business partner who showed readiness to make the bid of Rs2.31 crore,” said Patel, who came to the

auction venue with his business partner Sanjay Movaliya. “We will go ahead as per our capacity. We wish to contribute to the ‘Clean Ganga’ mission and that is the reason we have increased our bid,” he said. The auction at the Science Convention Centre closed at 5pm, after which the articles will be handed over to the highest bidder. Prior to Patel, a Haryana-based company’s MD offered Rs2.09 crore for the suit. There have been 11 bids so far on Friday, with four offers of more than Rs2 crore to claim the suit that Modi wore at his meetings with US President Barack Obama during his India visit last month. Prior to Mukesh Patel, Haryana-based LPS Bossard’s MD Rajesh Jain,

through his representative Himanshu Parmar, made an offer of Rs2.09 crore for the suit. This was the second bid by Jain, who had earlier offered to buy the suit for Rs1.85 crore. “The good cause of funds going to ‘Clean Ganga’ mission is the motivational factor for the

bid. Besides, it is the responsibility of the industries to make bid for a good cause,” Parmar said. Earlier, another Surat-based diamond trader Hitesh Patel had offered Rs2.08 crore, which was his third bid of the day after Rs1.61 crore and Rs1.75 crore. “I have

made the bid of Rs2.08 crore for the Modi suit. I don’t know how further I will go, but as this fund will be utilised to clean river Ganga, whatever I give would be less,” Hitesh said. Earlier in the day, businessmen Lavji Badshah and Jayanti Aklara made a

joint offer of Rs1.81 crore to purchase the monogrammed suit. Mumbai-based businessman Vipul Shah, managing director of Asian Star, made a written bid of Rs2.05 crore, while prior to him Mukesh Patel offered Rs2 crore for the suit. The other six bids made on the last day of the auction were less than Rs2 crore. On the second day of auction Thursday, the highest bid was Rs1.48 crore for the suit. The bidding for the suit had started with Rs11 lakh on the first day of auction. The suit that kicked up a political storm is being auctioned along with 455 items that Modi had received as gifts during his nearly nine-month long tenure, to generate funds

for the Prime Minister’s ambitious ‘Clean Ganga Mission’. Modi was photographed wearing the suit during his summit talks with Obama in Hyderabad House in Delhi on 25th January and at a joint media appearance that followed the meeting. The suit triggered a debate and Modi was slammed by his political opponents – especially the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for wearing an expensive suit that some reports claimed cost nearly Rs10 lakh. Amid the media hype surrounding the auction, Congress workers had Thursday protested outside the auction venue, calling the event an act of “self-publicity” by Modi.

Documents leaks case: Police recover Indian Coast Guard releases video input for finance minister's budget speech of Pakistani terror boat exploding

New Delhi The corporate espionage case in the petroleum ministry has got bigger with Delhi Police alleging on Friday that classified documents from the coal and power ministries were leaked too by suspects. The police told a court in Delhi that "incriminating" documents of the coal and power ministries were allegedly found in the possession of the accused,

who were supplying these to certain corporate houses for their benefit. Police sources told Hindustan Times that inputs for the finance minister's budget speech were among the leaked documents. An input on the National Gas Grid for the budget speech was among the various "secret" documents the police recovered, Press Trust of India reported. The police also recovered a letter of

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's principal secretary Nripendra Misra, according to the FIR in the case presented to chief metropolitan magistrate Sanjay Khanagwal, who heard the proceedings for remand of the accused. Santanu Saikia, a former journalist who runs a web portal on petroleum issues, and Prayas Jain, a Melbourne-based energy consultant; were arrested this morning. They allegedly worked as middlemen between employees in the petroleum ministry, who stole the documents, and corporations that bought them. Police sources said classified documents were recovered from Saikia's home and the Official

Secrets Act may be invoked in the case. The sources said the espionage ring worked in several layers: peons in the ministry stole documents and sold them to consultancy firms, which analysed them and prepared reports for corporations. Photocopies of various other documents also included one with a heading 'Brief on further opportunities in Sri Lanka dated February 4, 2015'. The police also recovered from the accused photocopies of papers of Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell on the 'monthly gas report/ December 2014' dated February 16, 2015 signed by Atreyee Das, DG of the cell.

New Delhi In its defence, the Coast Guard on Friday released a video to prove that the Pakistani boat with suspected terrorists on board on the night of December 31, 2014, was not blown up by India, rather it was set afire by its occupants. The development comes a day after the Defence Ministry Manohar Parrikar issued a show-cause notice to Deputy Inspector General of

the Indian Coast Guard, BK Loshali, for taking the responsibility of sinking the Pakistani boat. Parrikar had earlier said that his Ministry stands by the statement that an intruding Pakistani boat blew itself up off Porbandar coast on New Year eve. The footage was released today after Loshali was filmed declaring that he had ordered that the boat be attacked as it approached Indian waters. "I hope you remember the 31st

December night. We blew off the Pakistan... we blew them off," BK Loshali said in a video released by a leading English Daily. However, Loshali, denied reports that he had admitted ordering to blow up the Pakistani boat in the Arabian Sea on New Year's Eve. The claim was in sharp contrast to New Delhi's official position that the boat had "suspected terror links" and that the crew had committed suicide by setting the vessel on fire.

Lucknow With nine more patients of swine flu in the state capital, the total figure of those infected by the disease reaches 129. "Nine new patients have been been detected positive for H1N1 in the state capital since yesterday," Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr SNS Yadav said. "With this, a total of 129 swine flu patients have been found in Lucknow so far. They are being treated in different hospitals of the city", he said. Altogether, three

persons including Swatantra Saksena, working in Merchant Navy, a retired Army officer and the wife of a retired jawan have succumbed to the disease in Lucknow. With sharp rise in cases of swine flu in the state capital, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister

Akhilesh Yadav has directed to provide free and prompt treatment to such patients in SGPGI, KGMU and other medical colleges of the state. The CM has also directed that availability of medicines should be ensured in government hospitals.

Prime Minister Modi to Visit Sri Lanka 129 swine flu cases in Lucknow in March, Could Go to Jaffna COLOMBO Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Sri Lanka next month, the first bilateral visit to the country by an Indian premier in over 25 years, and is likely to go to Tamil-dominated Jaffna amid signs of growing amity between the two neighbours. "Prime Minister Modi will arrive on March 13 on a 3-day visit," Sri Lankan Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Rajitha Senaratne said. During his Lanka visit, Mr Modi is likely to go to war-

ravaged Jaffna in the Tamildominated Northern Province and Trincomalee in the Eastern Province, sources said. If Mr Modi visits Jaffna, he would be the first Indian Prime Minister to

do so. The visit comes within a month of new Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena's India trip this week that saw the two countries sign a civil nuclear pact. This was Mr Sirisena's

first foreign visit after assuming charge following a bitter presidential poll in which he defeated former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, ending his 10-year rule. Analysts see the high-level exchange of visits as a sign of growing amity between the two neighbours and a shift in Colombo's policy that was heavily pro-China under the previous administration. According to UN estimates, more than 40,000 civilians were killed in Lanka during the final phase of the conflict that ended in 2009.

Nitish Kumar does a Kejriwal, but will the Bihar voters follow Delhi? Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar's quick admission of his mistake in resigning as Bihar chief minister and apology to the people is a clear reminder that he has learnt a lesson from Aam Aadmi Party chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Speaking to mediapersons in Patna on Friday after meeting Bihar Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi, Kumar said, "I accept my mistake for stepping down as CM. I seek apology from the people of Bihar for this mistake." Kejriwal too had repeatedly admitted his mistake in resigning as Delhi chief minister and apologised to the people of Delhi. The voters of the national capital seem to have not only forgiven Kejriwal but also brought AAP back to power with an unprecedented majority of 67 of the 70 seats. Kejriwal had resigned in a huff on February 14, 2014 after AAP failed to get the Jan Lokpal Bill passed. It did not get the support of the Congress with whose outside support it was running the government. There are several similarities between Kejriwal and Kumar as far as resigning from their chief minister's post and then accepting their mistake and apologising to the people is concerned. The resignation of both Kejriwal and Kumar is related to their prime ministerial ambitions. In his speech on February 14 after he was sworn in as Delhi Chief Minister for the second time, Kejriwal admitted that they had become arrogant enough to contest the Lok Sabha elections. "We paid for our arrogance in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and god punished us," he said. Kumar is also known to have harboured prime ministerial ambitions. Exactly a week after Narendra Modi was declared as Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Campaign Committee chairperson on June 16, 2013, JDU broke its alliance with it. The BJP leaders took digs at Kumar saying he had assumed that the third front parties would project him as the leader for the Lok Sabha elections which never happened. Both Kejriwal and Kumar seem to have realised their mistakes the hard way. The former had to witness protests in the form of facing black flags, hoots, eggs, tomatoes and footwears from the public throughout the country. A Delhi auto-rickshaw driver even slapped him hard once. As far as Kumar is concerned, he installed his follower Jatin Kumar Manjhi. However, instead of being a "remote-controlled" chief minister, Manjhi defied him and JDU and embarrassed them on several occasions. Matters reached such a pass that Manjhi was expelled from the party despite being a CM and both challenged each other. Apparently taking a leaf out from Kejriwal's experience, Kumar hopes that the voters will forget and forgive him if he aired in public his realisation of mistake and apologised to the people.

QUOTE “What is the solution to end the social boycott? The OF THE courts cannot say that end the social boycott of Dalits. DAY It would be an ineffective order,” - Supreme Court

You can and you will: Aditi Rao Hydari

Mumbai I remember when I was in high school, we used to have long-distance running once a week. It would be at 6 in the morning and a part of the race would include an uphill track. I used to enjoy it, but since then, I haven't participated in a marathon. I think I should take part in one now! As part of my fitness regime, I do yoga and intersperse it with 'interval training', which is basically a form of exercise

where you have short bursts of walking and sprinting. For a lot of people, especially those who run long-distance, running is like meditating. It helps them disconnect with all the stress. It is also good for building stamina, endurance, mental strength and focus. Only people who are focussed, can finish a longdistance run. Running also kicks in the endorphine making you happy and bringing a beautiful glow to

your face. Two people who can inspire you to run are Farhan Akhtar and Ranveer Singh. The way Farhan trained for his role and what he did in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is inspirational. He would just have to say 'bhaag' and people will start running. Ranveer, I think, is the ultimate battery recharger. He is full of energy. When I run, I prefer to do it on a beach or in a park at 6 in the morning because that's the best time. In fact, anyone participating in a marathon should do a little bit of yoga and breathing exercises before D-Day. It helps control your breath because it is important to breathe steadily while running. And of course, run everyday as practice. Eating on time - that too, nutritious food - and sleeping on time are extremely important but underrated.Running the marathon and completing it is a victory in itself because it is something you are doing for yourself. I would like tell every girl out there 'You can and you will.'

CCI Approves Kotak Purchase of ING Vysya Bank

Mumbai Competition Commission of India has approved Kotak Mahindra Bank's record $2.4 billion purchase of ING Vysya, it said in an order published on Friday. Kotak had announced its plan to buy ING Vysaya in November last year, in what analysts predicted was the beginning of a long-awaited consolidation in a crowded

banking sector. In a threepage order, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) said the proposed merger was not likely to have an adverse impact on competition in banking and allied services. The deal is the first major bank takeover since top privately held lender ICICI Bank bought Bank of Rajasthan more than four years ago.

New Delhi Microsoft announced a new promotional offer for its premium Lumia handsets in India. The company brings ‘guaranteed cashback offers’ on the Lumia 930 and Lumia 830 smartphones. After the cashback, the Lumia 830 and Lumia 930 can be grabbed at discounted prices of Rs 21,800 and Rs 31,600 respectively. Let’s quickly brush through the specs. The Lumia 830 sports a 5-inch ClearBlack display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It comes powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 400 clocked at 1.2GHz and 1 GB RAM. There’s a

10MP main camera with 4K recording capability. Disappointingly, the front camera is a paltry 0.9 MP with 720p recording capability. The Lumia 930 also features a 5-inch screen with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The phone is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 which is clocked at 2.2 GHz. It has 2 GB RAM and 32 GB total memory space, but no support for any extra storage. This smartphone has a 20MP PureView camera with 2x digital zoom and dual-LED flash. Airbus in talks with Indian firms on helicopter joint venture BENGALURU Airbus Helicopters said on Friday it is in talks with Indian companies including Mahindra and Mahindra, Reliance Industries and Tata Group to jointly make military helicopters, to comply with rules aimed at helping the local defence industry. The company, part of Airbus Group, is offering to build its light utility AS550 Fennec and the medium lift EC725 for India's armed forces, which are heavily dependent on an ageing fleet of Cheetah and Chetak helicopters. "We are in the selection process, talking to different industries to form a JV (joint venture)," Rainer Farid, a senior Airbus Helicopters executive told Reuters on the sidelines of the Aero India airshow in Bengaluru on Friday. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Make in India" initiative, foreign contractors used to selling directly to New Delhi must form partnerships with local

companies and transfer more of the work to help to develop the country's defence industry. India last year scrapped the planned acquisition of 197 light utility helicopters so that it could launch a new competition reserved for domestic companies that form joint ventures with foreign suppliers. In addition to Airbus, other firms including U.S.-based Sikorsky Aircraft and Russian Helicopters are also expected to bid for the order. "We are willing to partner with Indian companies to supply light utility helicopters to the Indian military," Goldie Srivastava, spokesman for Sikorsky's parent company United Technologies Corp, said. Srivastava also said the company would be interested in participating in the bidding process for supplying 123 multi-role S70B Seahawk helicopters to the Indian navy once the tender opens.

I-League: Tough battle on the cards as Mumbai FC face Wahingdoh MUMBAI What a victory can do is amazing. Mumbai FC, for so long languishing at the bottom of the I-League table without a win, suddenly jumped into the eighth position. A win over the fancied Salgaocar last week did wonders for Khalid Jamil's boys and the coach celebrated like a player, kissing the turf to thank the forces for being with the team. On Friday , Mumbai FC face the challenge of Royal Wahingdoh at the Cooperage in a sixth round clash. Currently, Wahingdoh are enjoy ing an impressive run like Sunderland managed in the English Premiership. They are leading the table with 13 points from their six games. A young team managed by a shrewd coach in Santosh Kashyap, it has four victories and one horrific defeat at the hands of Bengaluru FC. Kashyap knows how to handle players and he showed in his team's performance. His

India get cracking on attacking plan after Dhoni's command

statement is ample measure of that: "To be honest, I did not expect us to be on top. I just told them to enjoy and give their best. I have made the team pressure-free," said Kashyap. Having said that, he quietly put the pressure on Mumbai FC by declaring that his team are the favourites. Mumbai FC have played well and only against Salgaocar have they come out on tops in terms of result. Japanese Taisuke and Jayesh Rane ran the

Salgaocar defence ragged. If according to indications Climax Lawrence joins the midfield, then they get a controlling midfielder par excellence. Mumbai FC defence has played well and only a rather foolish venture out of the safety by the goalkeeper gave Salgaocar an opening in the first half. If Mumbai FC can play with the same exuberance and solidity , Cooperage will see a solid fight on Friday.

five wickets in the first innings, picking up 2 scalps till now. Resuming on their overnight score of 367 for seven, Mumbai were helped with hard-working partnership’s in the end as Shardul (20)and Harmeet Singh (30) contributed with valuable knocks. Left-arm spinner Manan Sharma was the most impressive Delhi bowler with 4 wickets in his 30 overs with an economy rate of 3.06. But Mumbai’s Shardul has

certainly been the bowler of the 5-day game so far as the pacer trapped skipper Gautam Gambhir (34) lbw and then scalped Mithun Manhas for a duck. Medium-pacer Wilkin Mota also chipped in with two wickets to clean up Unmukt Chand (31) and send Shivam Sharma back in the hut for nought.Rajat Bhatia (25 not out) and Manan Sharma (14 not out) were fighting on when stumps were called.

Ranji Trophy: Delhi struggle against Mumbai

Cuttack Mumbai pace spearhead Shardul Thakur once again struck early to leave Delhi in tatters at 110 for four in their 440 run chase on Day 4 of the cricket Ranji Trophy quarterfinals on Thursday. After opener Akhil Hedwarkar’s 161-run marathon knock, which took Mumbai to 450 in the second innings, the Aditya Tare-led side tore into the Delhi top-order with Shardul, who had bagged

start of the four-day event at Delhi Golf Club. Chowrasia carded two birdies on the final three holes, playing alongside his fellow leader Lee who picked up four strokes on the back nine. After Rahman and Chapchai also

carded rounds of 65, Lagergren made it a fiveway tie in the final round of the day. Some of the tournament’s bigger names are still very much in contention, including the Spanish veteran Miguel Angel Jimenez who recorded a one-under par 70. Chowrasia’s strong showing evoked memories of his victory on the same course at the 2008 Indian Masters where he defeated a field that included South Africa’s Ernie Els.

Melbourne After India's opening match against Pakistan, MS Dhoni had said that bowling sides were resorting to short of a length in the World Cup and challenging batsmen to play big strokes. At their full training session in the afternoon at Junction Oval in St Kilda in suburban Melbourne, two days before their second World Cup group game against South Africa, his team worked that plan into the routine: the India quick bowlers tried mostly back of a length or full length in the nets, and their batsmen tried to attack them as often as they could. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has had ankle issues on this tour and did not play against Pakistan, did not bowl in the nets, and was confined to catching practice and sending down a few from a standing position to Mohit Sharma. Stuart Binny and Umesh

Yadav began proceedings and had extended bowling stints on the centre pitch. They started against Shikhar Dhawan, who was given plenty of back-of-a-length deliveries, which he repeatedly punched through the off side. Umesh bowled some quite full ones, too. It was Ravindra Jadeja's turn to bat next and he, too, had a decent hit while Dhawan headed to the side nets to face shortish throwdowns from the sidearm device. Jadeja joined him there after some time. Ambati Rayudu kept wicket against Binny and Umesh, with coach

Duncan Fletcher and Dhoni keeping a watch from close quarters. Virat Kohli then came to bat as the fast bowlers switched to the other end, and were joined by Mohit. Kohli solidly drove and lofted pitched-up deliveries on the off side. Ajinkya Rahane went after shortish deliveries outside off, as he punched and upper-cut them. Both batsmen and bowlers need to get more comfortable with the short of a length stuff, as Dhoni has flagged it as the favoured option in the tournament in these conditions against attacking batting.

World Cup 2015: How McCullum's captaincy has transformed New Zealand

Melbourne "A former first-class wicketkeeper spoke of a club match where a youthful McCullum sledged from behind the stumps. When it came to McCullum's turn to bat the senior gloveman repaid the favour by walking with him to the batting crease, taunting all the way. McCullum was hardly affected. He proceeded to propel his side to victory

with a wagon wheel like a dropped packet of spaghetti. The veteran couldn't wait to shake his hand at the end after witnessing such a commanding display." Andrew Alderson in ESPNCricinfo gives a snippet of Brendon McCullum in his early days. He was brash. He was aggressive. He was focussed. He was also

capable of wildly inconsistent displays. But with time, especially after taking over New Zealand's captaincy reins, he has matured. It's amazing how a player's personality, especially a captain's, rubs onto the team and brings the best out of the players. As the Kiwis absolutely thrashed England in front of a full house at the Westpac stadium, the McCullum effect was palpable. It was Tim Southee's (7-33) day no doubt. He bowled one of the best spells of swing bowling one could have witnessed but it was McCullum’s aggressive captaincy that laid the foundation for victory. In Southee and Trent Boult, McCullum has one of the most dangerous new ball bowling pairs at his disposal.

Somdev Devvarman, Yuki Bhambri Book Semifinal Berths in Delhi Open

New Delhi Somdev Devvarman and Yuki Bhambri remained on course for a title showdown by reaching the men's singles semifinals of the Delhi Open even as it was curtains for Saketh Myneni, here on Friday. Somdev, the country's top singles player, blunted a spirited challenge from Sanam

Singh as he eked out a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win in his quarterfinal while Yuki was far from convincing in his 7-6 (3), 6-3 win over seventh seed Radu Albot from Moldova. Myneni could not play to his potential in Friday's contest against Belgium's Kimmer Coppejans, losing his lasteight clash 4-6, 3-6. Somdev

will take on 21-year-old Coppejans while Yuki is now up against Belgium's lefthander Ruben Bemelmans, who overcame sixth seed Australian Luke Saville 64, 6-4 in the USD 100,000 ATP Challenger. Sanam, who had knocked out the top seed, came out firing on all cylinders against his compatriot as he stunned Somdev with some breathtaking backhand winners in the opening set.As Somdev prefers to remain on the baseline, Sanam tried to take advantage of that by using the drop shots more often but also lost points when he erred in execution.

Ahmedabad Liquor party in farm houses owned by builders in outskirts of Ahmedabad are very common, and they are hardly raided. But Thursday, 19 February was a rare day when police jumped the gates of a farm house and arrested a top builder with five others. Ganesh group founded by late Govindbhai Patel is one of the top five construction firm in Ahmedabad. Govindbhai’s son Shekhar who has also headed GIHED in past was held with five others and taken to Bopal police station late in the night. Shekhar is well connected and drinking or

possessing liquor is technically not considered a big offense. There’s no chance that he will face longer harassment from police or court. But on Friday morning, he is all over in print. Also some regional channels are repeatedly showing visuals in which he is standing in helpless condition in police station.Primary reason for big coverage of his arrest in media is because he is a well-known builder and one of the richest persons in Ahmedabad. But the other reason is that Shekhar is in same business in which some media groups are also

involved, and they are rivals. According to police sources, Police Sub Inspector Jayrasinh Chavda was on patrolling when he saw many luxurious cars parked near a bungalow in farm house. When police tried to check, it was stopped by security guard. Police detained the guard and raided the house where four people were found making preparations for a liquor party. Police found 90 beer bottles. When asked whether those held were drunk or not, police said that shall be known only after medical tests.
