Unlike auctions from the earlier seasons, the 2017 edition was pretty swift as teams had their strategies in place and went all out for who they wanted. And at the of the day, which saw intense bidding wars, a total of 66 players were sold with Rs 91.15 crores spent on them. While there were the expected the battles across tables, there were a few surprises as well, with the likes of Ishant Sharma and Irfan Pathan finding no bidders. Asghar Stanikzai and Imran Tahir joined the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara and Marlon Samuels, to remain unsold. Yet, the story of the day was Ben Stokes going towards Rising Pune Supergiants for Rs 14.5 crore while uncapped players like T Natarajan, K Gowtham – the Karnataka all-rounder, were

Ben Stokes emerges as the costliest player at the IPL 2017 auctions while Karn Sharma becomes the highest paid Indian among those who raked in the big money. Other Indian youngsters who did well were Varun Aaron (2.8 cr), Mohammed Siraj (2.6 crore) Karn Sharma (3.2cr), Aniket Choudhry (2cr) and M Ashwin (1 cr). Among the teams Gujarat Lions, Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians have the largest squads featuring 27 players while the Kolkata Knight Riders have the smallest with 23. KKR made some really smart buys and filled the slots

they required with some quality death bowlers and some back-up at various departments. They knew what they wanted and they went all out for it. It was a good strategy that they employed. Meanwhile the Delhi Daredevils too went to fill up their squad with talented pacers which included Pat Cummins for Rs 4.5 crore and Kagiso Rabada for 5 crore. The defending champions, Sunrisers Hyderabad, knew that their spin department

India’s 104-Satellite Launch Could Be ‘Wake Up Call’: Chinese Media (H.S.) | New Delhi

China has lauded India’s recent record-breaking achievement of putting 104 satellites into the Orbit on a single rocket and termed the launch, orchestrated by ISRO, as a “wake-up call” for China’s space industry. Through an article in the state-owned newspaper Global Times, China commented that competition

with India for commercial space launches “may be inevitable”. “India’s successful launch of a record breaking 104 satellites into Orbit could serve as a wake-up call for China’s commercial space industry and there are a number

of lessons for the country to learn,” the article stated. On the cost-effectiveness of ISRO’s recent PSLV-C39 mission, the newspaper commented, “The urgent action needed for China to expand its market share is to reduce the cost of putting satellites into the Orbit. “The launch indicated that India can send commercial satellites at lower costs,

SC to decide whether to refer Sabarimala issue to larger bench

giving the country’s competitiveness in the global race for burgeoning commercial space business.” China also evoked ISRO’s successful Mars Orbiter Mission, or Mangalyaan, and said, “In 2014, India became the fourth country to successfully send a spacecraft to orbit Mars, signaling a regional rivalry with China, which suffered a failure in its Mars mission in 2012.”

was a bit under par and went all out for it. While Kings XI Punjab went for the likes of Eoin Morgan for 2 crores and added the pace trio of T Natarajan for Rs 3 crores, Matt Henry for Rs 50 lakhs and Varun Aaron for Rs 2.80 crores. Martin Guptill was another valuable asset for Rs 50 lakhs for the team which lacked a bit of depth in the batting unit. Among others the Gujarat Lions scouted local talent and filled up their domestic quota. One smart buy for them was that of Darren Sammy for a price of Rs 30 lakhs. For Mumbai Indians it was Mitchell Johnson for 2 crores, K Gowtham for 2 crores, Karn Sharma for Rs 3.2 crores were the big buys. But it was the debutant from last year.

Uttar Pradesh polls 2017: The race for majority in the 403 seat house has turned the fight into a bitter exchange of below the belt blows, personal attacks and non-issues highlighted to gain brownie points and applause to sway large crowds. Agency | New Delhi

The Uttar Pradesh election battle has become more intense with political parties and leaders trading charges against each other in a feverish pitch to woo voters. BSP chief Mayawati, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have all indulged in personal attacks unbecoming of their positions and the picture is turning ugly now. On Monday, Akhilesh Yadav took a dig at PM Modi and veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan. He said: “Ek gadhe ka vi-

gyapan aata hai, main iss sadi ke sabse bade mahanayak se kahunga ke ab aap Gujarat ke gadhon ka prachar mat kariye (I would urge the Superstar of the century to stop advertising for donkeys of Gujarat).” Bachchan has been the brand ambassador for Gujarat Tourism’s Incredible Gujarat campaign for sev-

eral years now and was roped in by then chief minister Narendra Modi in 2009. Akhilesh based his cheeky attack on an advertisement of Gujarat tourism which showcases Wild Ass Wildlife Sanctuary in the Little Rann of Kutch in Gujarat. The advertisement shows several donkeys but the subtext in his words is clear.

lashed out at the CBI and Enforcement Directorate for failing to take the investigation to a logical end. “It is shocking that the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate having been provided details of 21 undeclared foreign accounts of Mr Karthi Chidambaram and of the companies that he control, have failed to proceed against Mr Karthi

Chidambaram to its logical end. Mr Karthi has also refused to obey three Summon Orders of the Enforecement Directorate,” said Swamy in the press release. Swami alleged that the Income Tax department has not taken action in the matter due to the pressure exerted by “Chidambaram’s friends in Finance Ministry”. “These foreign bank ac-

“Modi and Amit Shah have nothing to say and hence are making wild allegations, BJP knows it is losing the plot in UP, the senior minister. BJP will face worse than what it had faced in Bihar. Both want to create an environment of fear, both are terrorists and are creating terror in our democracy,” - In a verbal attack, spokesperson and minister of Samajwadi Party, Rajendta

Chaudhary called Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah as “Terrorists”. Let education be the anthem in our schools Kangana Ranaut on The Kapil Sharma Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan are set to Enforced patriotism has many pitfalls as we

have seen with the national anthem being made mandatory in movie halls. There have been several instances of people being attacked for not standing up, even to the extent of a disabled person being belaboured by people who thought he did not show enough respect on account of not being able to arise from his wheelchair. So, the issue of making the anthem compulsory in any venue should be thought through very thoroughly. The Supreme Court is now examining whether it should be made mandatory in schools with reference to a statement by the attorney general that singing the national anthem instils a sense of patriotism in children and, therefore, it should be made mandatory in schools. So far, the bench has said that the issue needs to be debated and then decided. The Indian school system has many problems, among which one of the most pressing is the lack of teachers. Once such a thing is made mandatory, it becomes actionable. If there is, for example, a school which has too few teachers, how are they to ensure that the anthem is sung in the proper manner by children? If they fail to do this, this leaves them open to harassment from vested interests. What if the children don’t know the words to the anthem? Patriotism is not instilled through the singing of the anthem alone. If children want to sing the anthem and understand what it stands for, it can be done by schools in their own time and space. The significance of the anthem and flag and the history associated with them can be taught to the child in a manner which she finds enjoyable and educative. There are many lessons to be learnt from the way in which the mandatory anthem in movie halls has been hijacked by self-styled custodians of patriotism. Invariably, when left to such people, an element of coercion and harassment enters the picture. In the case of schools, if such a move is enforced, who is to ensure that it is carried out properly? Chances are that local interests will appropriate this task and the whole thing will be given a political colour. The apex court had earlier turned down a plea of making the national anthem mandatory in all public offices, including Parliament, assemblies and the courts. Schools should not be made the exemption. Of course, on certain occasions the anthem may be sung, but voluntarily. There are far more important things to deal with in the education system than this, and these should get priority.

Show: Here’s the segment where she lost it wow you with their mushy magazine cover

(H.S.) | New Delhi The Kapil Sharma Show welcomed Kangana Ranaut and Shahid Kapoor as guests on the latest episode on Sunday night. The actors were there to promote their upcoming movie, Rangoon. However, there was another unexpected guest: Kangana’s incessant laughter. The actor and her co-star were subjected to some classic antics by Kapil and

his team. A particularly entertaining 30-minute segment was when Kapil finally brought back his alter ego of Rajesh Arora and Sunil Grover did his best Rinku Devi bit. Rinku hosted the show’s fictional version of Kaun Banega Crorepati, with Kangana and Shahid as contestants. The fun game show was interrupted again and again by Rajesh Arora who made constant jabs at Rinku

and Santosh (played by Kiku Sharda). He called her horse-faced, made fun of her tattoo from Thailand, asked her about her missing upper lip and more. However, the funniest bit was Kangana’s reaction to it all. She was wheezing, huffing and puffing, trying to catch a breath somewhere between the storm of jokes. She had to constantly wipe her tears and lean on Shahid to keep herself from falling off her chair. It was an absolute treat to watch her lose it like that and if you are wondering what was the big deal, watch the entire episode here. Rangoon is directed by Vishal Bharadwaj and also stars Saif Ali Khan. It releases on February 24.

His eyes transfixed on the TV screen, left-arm seamer Thangarasu Natarajan was finding it surreal when the bids against his name zoomed up at a breakneck pace during the IPL auction. The little known 25-year-old’s life changed in a matter of few minutes as Rs 10 lakh base price saw a quantum 30-time jump reaching Rs 3 crore with Virender Sehwag vigorously raising the pedal for Kings XI Punjab. Perhaps he remembered the days of hardships when his mother ran a street side stall and father worked as a porter at railway station. And the then 20-year-old, one of the five children, was plying his trade at tennis ball games in his native Salem. He eventually moved to Chennai

where he played for the popular Jolly Rovers, a club which has fielded big names like R Ashwin and Murali Vijay. His big breakthrough came last year when he enjoyed a successful stint for Dindigul Dragons in the inaugural TNPL, attracting the attention of the IPL scouts. “It seems unreal. I never thought I would play in the Tamil Nadu Premier League, let alone the IPL. Very thankful that it has happened,” Natarajan’s elation was palpable as he said. Na-

tarajan recalls how TNPL gave him the much needed exposure.

to decode how the mindset of a franchise owner work, it needs to be understood that some of the perceptions about tried and tested players work either ways — at times to a player’s advantage and at other times to their disadvantage. Ishant Sharma suffered for a huge base price of Rs 2 crore as he went unsold during both the rounds. “Ishant Sharma shouldn’t have kept his base price at Rs 2 crore. Firstly, he doesn’t play for India in T20s and not considered a white ball bowler. He is only playing Test cricket. Ideally, he should

have shed his ego and kept his base price in the range of Rs 30 lakh. Varun Aaron gained just because of that even though Ishant probably has more quality,” an IPL team top boss, who was at the auction table said. Left-arm seamer Thangarasu Natarajan or off-spinner Krishnappa Gowtham gained with their performances in Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) and Karnataka Premier League respectively. Natarajan got Rs 3 Crore from KXIP while Gowtham Rs 2 Crore from Mumbai Indians.

College, he was in 2012 approached by the Cricket Association of the Blind in India (CABI) to build the team. At the time, Rajkumar had last played a sport during his graduation years at St Joseph’s College, an alma mater he shares with Rahul Dravid. Yet, even then his main sports were table tennis

and football. Cricket came a far third. But, cricket coaching was not his brief. “It was to build the team. I was hired more for my man management skills than cricketing abilities. I was never meant to be the conventional coach,” says the man who then went on coach the team for a number of tournaments.

“There was a lot of pressure when I was picked to play in TNPL. But I am thankful to people like Ashwin, Vijay and L Balaji (TN bowling coach) who instilled the belief in me that I was good enough at the Ranji Trophy level. royalty of 20 percent on the market value of crude it extracted from the oil block. However, ONGC argued that since it supplied crude at a discounted price to the oil marketing companies, it will pay royalty on the discounted price instead of the market price. Considering ONGC’s annual profit is roughly Rs 22,000 crore, the payout would prove to be a

huge burden on the company’s pockets. Income of upstream companies depends on either crude or volumes moving up, and ONGC is hit on both counts as of now.
