Amid an unusually high maximum temperatures recorded in large parts of west and northwest India, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for the Konkan and Kutch regions, making it the season’s first and fairly early alert.

Usually, a heatwave alert in India begins in the month of March. With this, soaring temperatures of 3739°C are expected in Kutch and Konkan regions. Winter is still on its way out, but such heatwave alerts indicate that India could skip the spring season altogether and directly enter into the summers.Earlier, a report revealed that in about seven

states — Punjab, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand — the maximum temperatures seen in recent days, surpassed those usually recorded in mid-March.Going by this data, March will naturally be hotter than usual too, and hence, people in most parts of India should brace for a hotter summer. However, there is no forecast yet of a heat wave for Delhi-NCR.

The Supreme Court asked on Monday whether it can hear a range of pleas including PILs seeking a direction to the Centre to make religion and gender-neutral uniform laws governing subjects like marriage, divorce, inheritance and alimony. A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud made the observations about the scope of judicial powers with regard to issues falling within the legislative domain, and adjourned the hearing on as many as 17 petitions, including several PILs, on the issue by four weeks. “The question is to what extent the court can intervene in these matters as the issues fall under the legislative domain,” said the bench, which also comprised justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said, “In principle, so far as I am concerned, there cannot be any objection to gender-neutral uniform laws applicable to all equally. It is for the Lordships to consider as to what can be done on the judicial side.” At the outset, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for a party, said he has a preliminary objection to the PILs filed by lawyer Ashwini Updhyay.

Scindia on Monday said Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was taking forward the legacy of Shiv Sena founder late Bal Thackeray and the people of that state were with him. He was speaking a couple of days after the Election Commission declared Shinde’s faction as the real Shiv Sena and allowed it the use of the bow and arrow symbol, which dealt a blow to Uddhav Thackeray whose father founded the outfit in 1966. ”Shinde is taking forward the legacy of Balasaheb Thackeray. The people of Maharashtra are with him and the BJP-Shiv Sena government there,” he told reporters on Sunday night. Scindia also said the double engine governments (of Shinde and the Narendra Modi dispensation at the Centre) were ensuring Maharashtra was one again focused on development. Shinde’s rebellion

BSF is not trigger-happy, strife at Bangladesh border due to aggressive cattle smugglers

Case Against Sanjay Raut on Charge of Making Derogatory Remarks Against Maha CM Shinde

Delhi Excise Policy Case: Manish Sisodia Summoned on Feb 26 After CBI Agrees to His Request

In his column earlier this month, ThePrint’s national security editor Praveen Swami argued that the deaths of cattle smugglers along the India-Bangladesh border adversely impact our relations with the country. His conclusion is unexceptionable. The recommendation that the Union government must do much more to minimise such casualties, including legalising the cattle trade with our eastern neighbour, is also logical as it will benefit both our economies and also tackle the problem of stray cattle. However, what does not stand scrutiny is the implied conclusion that the Border Security Force is a trigger-happy force. The mandated role of BSF, founded in 1965, is to promote a sense of security amongst the border population while preventing trans-border crimes and prevent smuggling. It also has an important wartime role to assist the defence forces in their effort. The cattle smugglers – both Indian and Bangladeshi — try to push cattle across, mainly at night, in large numbers. The cattle from India is a chief source of protein, and also the mainstay of the leather industry of Bangladesh. Its smuggling is allegedly actively promoted by the country’s border authorities and politicians. After crossing over, the cattle smugglers reportedly pay a certain fixed amount to the nearest post of the Bangladesh Border Guards (BGB) after which they are allowed to move into the interiors. When I was commanding the North Bengal frontier of BSF, the open signal communications of the Bangladesh Border Guards were a useful tool for me. I would compare the number of cattle reporting to the outposts of the BGB and the number seized by my troops. It helped me to hold my unit and section commanders accountable.

‘Let Them Print Big Posters’: Karnataka BJP Mocks Cong’s ‘Flower on Ear’ Campaign Over State Budget

Agency News: New Delhi

In poll-bound Karnataka, a tug of war has started between the ruling BJP and Congress over the latter’s ‘Kivi Mele Hoova’ campaign where party’s national general secretary CT Ravi has mocked former CM Siddaramaiah and KPCC president DK Shivakumar for wearing flowers behind their ears. “I myself am telling them it looks good on them. The poster was a little small. Let them print big posters and paste them and also print pictures with flowers on ears. Don’t ask me further details,” said Ravi. The ‘flower on ear’ campaign was launched by the Congress to protest BJP’s state budget. ‘Kivi Mele Hoova’ means someone has been tricked, in this case, the opposition has alleged that the ruling government has cheated

the people of Karnataka by not fulfilling the promises it had made in 2018. Karnataka BJP president Nalin Kumar Kateel also hit out at the Congress and said the nation became a beggar since its rule after Independence. “The Congress after all these years of Independence kept flowers on the ears of people and ruled the country. Under the Congress regime, there were no developmental works,” Kateel said. He further said if the country has received respect and accolades today.

The war of words between the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) turned filmy on Monday after the saffron party hit back at former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray’s earlier remark in which he called Union Minister Amit Shah “Mogambo”, an iconic villain from the 1980s blockbuster Bollywood film ‘Mr India’. Amit Shah had on Sunday welcomed the Election Commission’s decision to recognise the faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as the real Shiv Sena had allotting it the ‘bow and arrow’ symbol. Shah had lashed out at Thackeray and said the latter would now know on which side the truth was. Thackeray had responded to the comments during a gathering on the same evening and sarcastically said ‘Mogambo khush hua’, a line the villain in the film often repeats when a plan succeeds. Nikki Yadav murder case: Delhi Court extends Sahil Gehlot’s police custody by 2 days

Agency News: New Delhi

A metropolitan court here on Monday extended the police custody of Sahil Gehlot, accused of killing his girlfriend Nikki Yadav and stuffing her body into a refrigerator in southwest Delhi, by two days.

The link court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samiksha Gupta remanded the other five coaccused in the case in judicial custody for 14 days. The investigation officer had sought a three-day extension of Gehlot’s custodial interrogation.

Last Tuesday, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Archana Beniwal had remanded Gehlot (24) in five days’ police custody. Gehlot’s father Virender Singh, cousins Naveen and Ashish and friends Lokesh and Amar were sent to police custody

last Friday after being produced before a duty magistrate. Police had said the five co-accused were arrested after their roles in the killing of Yadav were ascertained. Police had initially said Gehlot, after being arrested on February 14, had confessed to killing Yadav as she was pressuring him to marry her. In a twist in the case, police later said Yadav was Gehlot’s wife and the couple had tied the knot in 2020.

According to a top Delhi Police officer, Yadav was opposed to the impending marriage of Gehlot that his family had fixed.

‘Build a BJP Office There First’: DK Shivakumar on Bommai’s Ram Temple Pitch

Agency News: Bengaluru

Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar has ridiculed the idea mooted by the state’s BJP government to build a Ram Temple in Karnataka. In an exclusive to News18, Shivakumar said there is no trace of any connection between Ram and Ramdevarabetta, the proposed site for the “majestic” Ram Temple. Presenting the latest budget, the last before Karnataka goes to polls in a few months, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had announced the allocation of Rs 425 crore towards building a “majestic” Rama Mandira (temple in Kannada) along the lines of the Ram Mandir being built in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. “Where are they going to build the Ram

Mandira? They (BJP) are trying to woo people emotionally. Go and ask the people of Ramanagara, where is the Ram Mandir there… whether Rama was born there, whether Sita or Anjaneya were born there. There is no history there, but there is a small Ram Temple. Let them build anything, it will not affect us politically,” Shivakumar told as he officially started his Prajadhwani Yatra. Bommai’s announcement came after several senior BJP leaders wrote to him seeking the constitution of a temple.

Nashik Police have registered a case against Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, an official said on Monday. Shinde faction officerbearer Yogesh Beldar lodged a complaint at Panchavati police station here late Sunday night, alleging that during an interaction with a TV channel, Raut used derogatory words against CM Shinde and maligned his image, he said. Based on the complaint, a case has been registered against Raut under Indian Penal Code Section 500 (defamation), the official said. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during his visit to Pune on Saturday, said those who chose to “lick the soles” of people with opposite ideologies have found which side truth was

When asked about Shah’s remark, Rajya Sabha member Raut on Sunday said, “What is the present chief minister licking? Maharashtra doesn’t give importance to what Shah says.” Raut in a tweet on Sunday also claimed that a “deal of Rs 2000 crore” has taken place so far to “purchase” the Shiv Sena party name and its ‘bow and arrow’ symbol, a charge dismissed by the Shinde faction and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Reducing Army Presence in J-K Govt’s Prerogative : Farooq Abdullah

Farooq Abdullah on Monday said reducing the Army footprint in Jammu and Kashmir was a prerogative of the government.

“That is a matter for the government. How much they will reduce or increase is their prerogative. I have no say in it,” he told reporters at the National Conference headquarters here. The Lok Sabha member from Srinagar was responding to questions about a media report which claimed that the government is considering withdrawing the Army from the hinterland in Kashmir in a phased manner. Reacting to the government’s reported decision to

“halt” demolition drive in the union territory, the former chief minister said “It was due to the opposition of the people”. “This has happened because of the noise made by the people. If people had not made noise, they would have intensified the drive. People should remember that they have the power to shake the government,” he added.

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has been summoned on February 26 by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the excise policy scam case. The CBI on Sunday deferred Sisodia’s questioning in connection with the Delhi Excise policy scam case after he sought time from the probe agency citing the city government’s ongoing budget exercise. The CBI had registered an FIR in August last year against Sisodia and 14 others under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 120B and 477A, and section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The federal agency has alleged the Delhi government’s policy to grant licences to liquor traders favoured certain dealers who had allegedly paid bribes for it, a charge strongly refuted by the AAP. Sisodia has

alleged that the BJP was using the probe agency to take “revenge” and expressed apprehension that he would be arrested. The Aam Admi Party leader, who is also the Finance minister in the Delhi government, said he would be available for questioning after a week. During its probe into the money trail and links between liquor traders, AAP leaders, middlemen and politicians, the CBI has gathered elaborate materials on which it needs clarifications from Sisodia who is the prime accused in the FIR, officials said.

Ranji Trophy: Runners-up tag sticks to Bengal

Agency News : New Delhi

The first session of the penultimate day was good enough for Saurashtra to crush Bengal’s hopes and secure the Ranji Trophy title for the second time in three years with a nine-wicket victory at Eden Gardens. For Bengal, the onus was on overnight batsmen

Manoj Tiwary and Shahbaz

Ahmed to bat for long. The duo did begin steadily on Sunday, but miscommunication between skipper Tiwary and Shahbaz while going for the third run resulted in the latter’s run-out dismissal. Shahbaz’s departure at a time when the ball wasn’t doing much certainly had an effect on Tiwary, who perished playing a loose stroke for the second time in the game off his counterpart Jaydev Unadkat (6/85). Tiwary later admitted the

“mistake” from his side when he suddenly paused mid-pitch and started running backwards, with Shahbaz also close to the striker’s end going for the third run. “That (Shahbaz’s run-out dismissal) did have a bit of a psychological effect on me,” Tiwary agreed. The quick dismissals of Shahbaz and Tiwary, followed by a reckless stroke from wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel soon after, had more or less confirmed Saurashtra’s victory as well as an early finish. From 194/4, Bengal collapsed to 241 in their second essay.

Debopriyo Mukherjee is soaking in the praise coming his way for his performance in Abani Sen er 7 No. Case. “The feedback has been good so far, in fact, it’s been better than expected. Ours is a Bengali show streaming on a national OTT platform (MX Player) so the expectation was that we’d get buried under the Hindi original content on the

platform. To our surprise though, we made it to the trending and top-picks sections. I think the

performances from the cast, the concept and the story are what the audiences have really taken a liking to,” said Debopriyo.

That I have been able to create a detective who defies all the conventions and stereotypes of the genre, while also getting the audience to invest in Abani Sen emotionally. It came from someone who has directed me several times so it’s become a trophy of sorts to me. However, I

believe this compliment belongs to the writer and director of the show, Neil Nawaz. I was merely his instrument. The guy next door, the one struggling every day to overcome his failures. He doesn’t get a second look from people when he walks down the street, he evokes no sense of confidence. Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Heeramandi: ‘I have done things with which I have surprised myself’

‘Where courtesans were queens…’ With that catchline, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has unveiled six ethereal-looking characters of his upcoming Netflix web series Heeramandi. The period drama is headlined by Sonakshi Sinha, Manisha Koirala, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sharmin Segal and Sanjeeda Sheikh. Bhansali will be making his long-format and OTT debut with Heeramandi, and the first look gives us a glimpse of the opulent world that is his signature. “I make big films. They come naturally to me. But Heeramandi is my biggest project. It’s so huge in its scale. I had to do something special. So, there was no holding back. I have made 10 films in 30 years and in the last year or so, I have made three films , that is eight episodes,” said Bhansali, speaking at an event organised by Netflix India. “It is so demanding and difficult. I had to be very alert, constantly working on the script. You have to make amends to the number of hours we work. It’s double the hours than a film. It’s far more intense. I have given my best. This show comes from deep down and it’s very special,” added the maker of films like Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat and Devdas. The idea for Heermandi has been with Bhansali for more than a decade, he said. “Moin Beg came to me with this idea 14 years ago but every time I was making other films such as Devdas, Bajirao Mastani. He said, ‘Can you give me my script back?’ Finally, it got made. In Heeramandi, I have done things with which I have surprised myself,” said Bhansali. Heeramandi tells the story of courtesans who lived like queens and had the kings, nawabs and the British at their feet. They were artists, singers, dancers and connoisseurs of good poetry. “Once I connected with Beg’s idea and characters, I started thinking about what they would be like. I have been living with them for 14 years in my mind and they never went away from me.
