Shahi admitted on Thursday that stopping malpractices in Board examinations was a huge task. Lalkeshwar Prasad, Chairman of the Bihar School Examination Board, visited the centre at Mahnar in Vaishali district, but he

and his colleagues faced the wrath of parents and others. “I have written to the administration in every district to keep strict vigil at the centres,” Mr. Prasad told SSA. Mr. Shahi sought public cooperation for conducting free and fair examinations in the State. “It is a big challenge to stop 100 per cent unfair means in the examination,” he said. “I also want to ask people if it is not the responsibility of society as well to stop it?” In Bihar, at least four or five

people come to the centres to help the candidates, Mr. Shahi told presspersons. The Board examinations for Standard X students in the State began on March 17 and would conclude on March 24. Over 14.26 lakh students are appearing at more than 1,100 centres. Over 1,000 examinees have been expelled in the first two days for using unfair means. Misbah-ul-Haq, Shahid Afridi bid adieu to ODI cricket Agency : Adelaide Pakistan captain Misbah-ulHaq and flamboyant allrounder Shahid Afridi's ODI careers came to an end on Friday following their World Cup quarterfinal defeat against Australia but the two players will continue to play Test and Twenty cricket respectively. While Misbah will continue to lead Pakistan in Test cricket, Afridi, who retired from the longer format in 2010, will be available for selection in T20 matches. The duo had called time on their

respective ODI careers before the 50-over showpiece event. The 40year-old Misbah served Pakistan cricket for long but failed to register a single ODI ton in 162 matches since making his

international debut in 2001 in a Test match against New Zealand. An unflappable middle-order mainstay, Misbah has 42 ODI halfcenturies to his credit but doesn't have a single 50over ton under his belt.

“Why blame only the students? They lack quality teachers,” Images of Indian students blatantly cheating on schoolleaving examinations under the noses of supervisors in Bihar have gone viral, inviting ridicule on Twitter and exposing flaws in the much-maligned education system of an impoverished eastern state. On Thursday, the Hindustan Times published a photo of dozens of men clambering up the wall of a four-storey test centre in Bihar state, perched on window ledges as they folded answer sheets into paper planes flown into classrooms. “Should we shoot them?” asked Prashant Kumar Shahi, Bihar’s education minister, addressing a news conference after television news channels aired the incriminating photo and raked up the scandal. “On average, four or five persons are helping each student use unfair means,” Shahi said, adding it was impossible to curb cheating if parents encouraged their children. Exams held by the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) are viewed as makeor-break tests that could transform the lives of millions growing up in poverty. Copying is rampant during staterun standardised tests and invigilators look the other way when pupils consult peers via WhatsApp messages on phones or jot down answers from notes smuggled into classrooms. More than 1.4 million students are taking the tests this week, crammed into 1,217 examination centres in Bihar. Supervisors stationed at notorious test centres vie for the postings, enticed by the prospect of bribes from parents eager to have their wards scrape through. Cheating has been on the rise since the state government offered cash rewards of Rs10,000 ($160) to lower-caste students who were able to answer about half the questions on their tests. This year, more than 1,000 students were caught cheating in three days and have been expelled. The tests end on March 24. Attempts to chase away family members lurking outside test centres on Thursday backfired, with stone-pelting mobs forcing police to beat a retreat. BSEB Secretary Srinivas Chandra Tiwari said of plans to hold awareness workshops for students and parents, where attendees would be counselled against unfair means. But many parents blame the government and indifferent teachers for Bihar’s failure to curb cheating. The state government has been accused of hiring more than 400,000 teachers on contract without checking their proficiency. In the last two years, more than 12,500 teachers failed competency tests, unable to solve questions designed for fifth-graders. “Why blame only the students? Are schools imparting proper teaching? They lack quality teachers,” said Sanjeev Kumar Singh, whose son is taking the tests this year. Taken to task by the Patna High Court over large-scale copying in ongoing matriculation examination and widespread criticism, the Bihar government today swung into action and cancelled examination at four centres and took seven policemen into custody for aiding in cheating. A division bench of Chief Justice L Narasimha Reddy and Justice Vikash Jain took the state government to task over report of mass scale copying in the matriculation examination.

Court Bars Glenmark From Making Anti-Diabetes Drugs

Rematch between Saina Nehwal and Carolina Marin in the offing

Ahmedabad

SPORTS ROUNDUP ICC WORLD CUP-2015

Dhoni's brave captaincy key to India success in World Cup: Kapil Dev Agency : New Delhi The Delhi High Court on Friday restrained Indian firm Glenmark Pharmaceuticals from manufacturing, marketing or selling its antidiabetes drugs Zita and ZitaMet, saying it has "prima facie" infringed the patent of US drug major Merck Sharp and Dohme (MSD). A bench of justices S Ravindra Bhat and Najmi Waziri, while granting the interim injunction, said MSD "has established a prima facie case of patent infringement" by Glenmark and directed the Indian firm to give an undertaking that it will comply with the order. The court also set aside its single-judge's April 5, 2013 order refusing to restrain Indian company from manufacturing and selling its medicines meant for treatment of Type-2

diabetes. The bench, however, on Glenmark's oral plea to allow it to sell its goods already in the market, clarified that it "may sell such of the products which are already in the market i.e in possession of its distributors and retailers". "It shall be in compliance of injunction, not further sell or distribute or place in the market the drugs in question," the court said and added if any stocks of such goods are in its factory awaiting distribution, "true and correct accounts thereof be given". It also allowed representatives of MSD to inspect the gate passes of the manufacturing facility of Glenmark to ascertain for themselves as to how much stock has already been distributed prior to the order and what remains in factory.

SEBI warns of penalties as board quota deadline nears

Agency : New Delhi A rematch of the All England final between India's Saina Nehwal and world champion Carolina Marin is on the cards with the two stars given first and second seeding in the India Open Super Series to be played from March 24. Saina and Marin have already facedoff in two summit clashes this year with both sharing the spoils - the Indian winning in Syed Modi Grand Prix gold, while Marin came on top at the All England Championships. Saina and Marin should cruise till the quarterfinal

stage where the former is likely to meet Pai Yu Po of Chinese Taipei, while Marin could take on sixth seed Okuhara Nozomi of Japan. Before that, London Olympics bronze medallist Saina is scheduled to face off against a qualifier in the second round and has a likely meeting against national champion G Ruthvika Shivani in the second round. Marin, on the other hand, begins her campaign against India's Rituparna Das. The biggest hurdle to Saina's march in the finals is likely to come from Xin Liu of China in

the semifinals, against whom the Indian ace enjoys a 2-0 head-to-head record. The other last four stage encounter could see the current world champion face off against the player who wore that crown a year ago, Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand. In the men's singles draw, India's biggest hope and second seed K Srikanth has a tricky opener against Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk of Thailand and could meet his All England conqueror, Kento Momota of Japan, in the second round.

Australia wins by 6 wickets, reaches semi-final

Agency : New Delhi Lauding Mahendra Singh Dhoni's brave leadership, cricket legend Kapil Dev feels it is the Indian captain's confidence in his players' ability that makes them believe they can retain the World Cup. India, who are undefeated in the tournament so far have won 11 straight games over two editions of the 50-over showpiece event, decimated Bangladesh in the quarter-finals to storm into the last-four stage. Kapil, who led India to their first World Cup triumph in 1983, credits Dhoni for the clinical show. "This Indian side is truly Dhoni's team, he is a leader in the actual sense of the word. Most of the

boys have played under him for some time now and seem to have a real connection with the skipper," Kapil Dev, who is a part of the Hindi commentary panel for Star Sports, told SSA. India have also managed to bowl out all their oppositions in the seven matches gone by as the bowling unit led by Mohammed Shami has looked potent. Kapil said that Dhoni is an excellent leader. "Dhoni's hold on the team is very evident from his body language and his constant interaction with the players. It is his confidence in the players' ability which is helping them perform to their full potential and this is what gives them the belief to go all the way and retain the

cup," added Kapil on Dhoni's new approach to motivate his boys. Dhoni, who achieved the unbelievable feat of leading India to 100 ODI wins as captain, surpassed Hansie Cronje's wins of 99 as South African skipper. He is only behind Australian greats Ricky Ponting (165) and Allan Border (107) as 'Captain Cool' gears up for his fourth ICC title. Dhoni is also the only captain to win all three ICC tournaments World T20 (2007), World Cup (2011) and Champions Trophy (2013). Kapil was quick to highlight Sourav Ganguly's contribution to Indian cricket and said that Dhoni has carried forward the mettle.

Agency : Mumbai Corporate India's "shameful" failure to appoint enough women directors ahead of a deadline set by regulators for April 1 will result in "very serious" consequences for firms, the head of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) said on Friday. SEBI last year imposed a quota of one female director on the board of every listed firm. It extended the deadline once last year, but despite last-minute appointments, hundreds of

firms, including several large state-owned companies, still fall short of the requirement. According to data combined by Prime Database, almost one third of companies listed on the National Stock Exchange still have no women directors on their board. Laggards include state owned oil firm ONGC (ONGC.NS), infrastructure group Larsen & Toubro (LART.NS) and conglomerate Adani Enterprises (ADEL.NS), owned by one of India's richest men.

HTC Appoints Cher Wang CEO Agency : New Delhi HTC chairwoman Cher Wang has replaced Peter Chou as chief executive at the Taiwanese phone maker. Chou, whose focus recently turned to product development, will transition to a strategic new role leading future product innovation. "We are seeing rapid changes in the industry, with the smartphone as our personal hub connecting us to a growing world of smart devices," Wang said in a statement. "We pioneered the smartphone industry; now we are applying that thinking to realize the potential of a new generation of connected

products and services." In 1997, Wang co-founded HTC Corp., initially struggled through the smartphone revolution, only recently finding its footing with the HTC One lineup. The company has recently been expanding into other product areas. Last month, the company teamed up with Under Armour to integrate UA Record fitness software into future HTC wearables. And it unveiled the new HTC Vive virtual reality headset at Barcelona's Mobile World Congress.

Agency : ADELAIDE Australia overcame Pakistan on Friday to set up a World Cup semi-final with defending champions India, as the International Cricket Council took the extraordinary step of rebuking their own president in a row over ‘biased’ umpiring. Pakistan, the 1992 champions, collapsed to 213 after skipper Misbahul-Haq won the toss and batted first on a good Adelaide Oval pitch. Recalled Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood took four for 35 in an innings where Haris Sohail topscored with 41 and put on 73 for the third wicket with Misbah (34). But a spirited Pakistan reduced Australia to 59 for three, with leftarmer Wahab Riaz (two for 54) capturing the prize wicket of home captain Michael Clarke for just eight in a superb spell of fast bowling. However fine leg Rahat Ali dropped a routine catch after all-rounder

Shane Watson, then on four, top-edged a Wahab bouncer. It was a key moment, with Australia then 83 for three. Steven Smith’s composed 65 steadied Australia before Watson, 64 not out and Glenn Maxwell, also dropped off the luckless Riaz on his way to an unbeaten 44, saw the tournament co-hosts to a six-wicket win in the 34th over. Pakistan’s defeat meant this match became a final one-day international before retirement for both the 40-year-old Misbah and fellow veteran Shahid Afridi, who bowed out with a typically quickfire 23. Australia, who wore black armbands as mark of respect for former prime minister Malcolm Fraser, who died earlier on Friday, will now play India in Sydney on March 26. Meanwhile the fall-out from India’s 109-run quarterfinal thrashing of Bangladesh in Melbourne on Thursday saw the ICC’s president,

Mustafa Kamal of Bangladesh, say decisions made by officials seemed to have been “pre-arranged”. He was especially angry that India’s Rohit Sharma, who made 137, had not been given out when caught on 90 after umpires Aleem Dar and Ian Gould signalled a no-ball for what appeared to be a legitimate waist-high delivery from Rubel Hossain. But ICC chief executive David Richardson, who labelled Kamal’s comments “very unfortunate”, defended the umpires by saying: “Any suggestion that the match officials had ‘an agenda’ or did anything other than perform to the best of their ability are baseless and are refuted in the strongest possible terms.” New Zealand and the West Indies, who meet in Wellington on Saturday, know the winners of their quarter-final will play South Africa in Auckland on March 24.

Agency : Sydney It has been a lull for Virat Kohli in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup but skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is standing firmly behind his deputy and expressing confidence that Kohli will come good on a

big day as he is a "bigoccasion player". Kohli, who had four Test hundreds in four-match Test series, scored a hundred in the Cup opener against Pakistan, but in the next six games since then he has had scores of 46, 33 not out, 33, 44 not

out, 38 and 3. Asked if it was a case of poor shot selection rather than good bowling from the opposition, Dhoni didn't seem to agree. "I don't think poor shot selection is the case. He is a dominant batsman and loves playing his strokes. I don't think he has batted badly at all," said the skipper, batting for Kohli at a post-match press conference after India's quarter-final win against Bangladesh. In fact, Dhoni feels it is unfair to expect Kohli to fire every time he goes out to bat. "Not that he has got a century every time he has gone out to bat. Maybe we are relating to the Test series, and expect him to scores a hundred each time he is there in the middle," Dhoni said, seeking to put an end to the unnecessary expectations. Dhoni is happy that Kohli is "focused on the process". "He is concentrating on the process. He is a big-occasion player and will fire on a big day," the skipper added.
